The Effect Of Crime Drama Viewing Habits And Technology On Potential Jurors, Erin Marie Cosenza Jan 2023

The Effect Of Crime Drama Viewing Habits And Technology On Potential Jurors, Erin Marie Cosenza

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Proponents of the “CSI effect” argue that viewers of fictional crime drama television programs are inappropriately influenced and have heightened expectations for the presentation of forensic evidence during jury trials and therefore cause jurors to incorrectly weigh the importance of the evidence on the outcome of the trial. Television programs make measurable contributions to viewers’ perceptions of reality and cultivate the way people learn about the world. Cultivation theory suggests that the ability to use critical thinking is inhibited in discerning truth from glamorized portrayals of evidence collection, analyses, and the timeframe with which criminal investigation storylines are concluded. The …

Autism spectrum disorders (ASD) are thought to be influenced by environmental, genetic, and maternal factors, including potential links to periconceptional folic acid. This quantitative case-control study, guided by the life course theory, explored the association of maternal risk factors (age, race, education, income, folate status, gestational diabetes, gestational hypertension, and MTHFR mutation) on the precipitation of ASD in offspring. The sample comprised 96 mothers of children with ASD and 143 mothers of children without ASD. Logistic regression analysis indicated no significant association between maternal folate status and ASD (OR = 1.00, 95% CI [1.000, 0.001], p = .755). Mothers with …

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Teaching has never been an easy profession, but the swift transition from in-person to digital instruction during the COVID-19 pandemic made it significantly more difficult. Between a global pandemic and a nation's racial reckoning, teachers were forced to juggle work, family, and student responsibilities. While there were suggested tips on how to practice self-care, the findings on self-care have been conflicting, and there is a scarcity of research on the role that teacher self-care played in persistence for classroom teachers during the COVID-19 pandemic. The purpose of this basic qualitative study was to explore reported teacher self-care practices and how …

Leadership And Spirituality: The Relationship Of Incorporating Spirituality In Ethical Workplace Decision Making, Tiffany D. Cooper

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Unethical actions such as fraud, corruption, and corporate scandals have led to a global loss of more than $7.1 trillion. The unethical actions concern business leaders because unethical decision-making can lead to business closure. Grounded in Fry's spiritual leadership theory, the purpose of this quantitative correlation study was to examine the relationship between spiritual leadership, spiritual well-being, and ethical decision-making. The participants were 102 mid-level managers in the United States who completed the Spiritual Leadership Survey. The results of the multiple linear regression were significant, F(4, 97) = 7.808, p < .001, R2 = .244. In the final model, hope/faith was the only significant predictor (t = 2.079, p = .040, ß = .314). A key recommendation is for organizations' leaders to incorporate hope/faith in their overall decision-making. The implications for positive social change include the potential of leaders enlightening an individual's thinking toward ethical decisions for themselves, their organizations, and personnel within the workplace.
