Vincentian Formation In Africa For Missionary Preaching In The Footsteps Of Saint Vincent De Paul, Linus Umoren C.M. Jan 2024

Vincentian Formation In Africa For Missionary Preaching In The Footsteps Of Saint Vincent De Paul, Linus Umoren C.M.

Vincentian Studies

Vincent de Paul was deeply concerned with the proper preparation of the clergy so that the poor could be evangelized. Linus Umoren outlines Vincent's method of preaching and the challenges the Church faced in reforming the clergy during the Counter-Reformation. Many of today’s new priests, including Vincentians, are coming from Africa. It is therefore necessary to develop a formation program that is uniquely suited to the African cultural context. Because of colonialism, the Church in Africa still needs to develop its own theological perspective instead of the one that had been brought to it by Europeans. It also faces several …

Vincent De Paul’S World Of Animals, John E. Rybolt Oct 2018

Vincent De Paul’S World Of Animals, John E. Rybolt

Vincentian Studies

Vincent de Paul’s texts contain over 650 direct or indirect references to more than 100 animals. These include domesticated animals—especially horses, sheep, cattle, and swine—as well as wild animals: birds, invertebrates, aquatic animals, wolves, and even mythical creatures. Sometimes the references are within the context of animals’ role in the lives of the Congregation, the Daughters, or the poor. More often, animals are used either positively or negatively to explain correct behavior in community life, proper spiritual aspirations, or the ideal (obedient) relationship of humanity to God. Often taken from his own observations, Vincent’s animal citations demonstrate his awareness of …

Emergent Catholicity: Forming The Mind Of Vincent, Scott Kelley Ph.D. Sep 2017

Emergent Catholicity: Forming The Mind Of Vincent, Scott Kelley Ph.D.

Vincentian Studies

Vincent de Paul has been perceived as anti-intellectual for reasons that are discussed in this article, but his two degrees, especially the one from the University of Toulouse, profoundly influenced his thinking. His education developed his logic, making him “a formidable theologian,” an excellent organizer, and an effective advocate for poor persons. The article traces the medieval university’s influence on Vincent’s university experience. Logic’s importance in the theology curriculum and the way it was taught are described. Since Vincent’s degree allowed him to teach from the seminal Book II of Peter Lombard’s Sentences, Lombard’s writings are contextualized within those …

Poverty Reduction—A Vincentian Initiative In Higher Education: The All Hallows Experience, Dorrie Balfe O.P., Ma, John Joe Spring Ma, Dip.Th.

Vincentian Studies

The development of the commitment of All Hallows College to poverty reduction is recounted. From its founding in 1842, All Hallows was focused on training seminarians for ministry in impoverished areas worldwide. Faced with a decline in candidates for the priesthood, it began offering lay ministry training in the early 1980s, with a special emphasis on the home mission in Ireland. It became renowned for its pastoral ministry education. The college instituted a justice/service element in all its courses and has created a postgraduate program in Social Justice and Public Policy The genesis of the latter, its requirements, and goals …

Vincentian Seminaries In Louisiana (2), John E. Rybolt C.M., Ph.D. Apr 1995

Vincentian Seminaries In Louisiana (2), John E. Rybolt C.M., Ph.D.

Vincentian Studies

This article continues the study of Vincentian seminaries in Louisiana begun in the previous issue. Saint Vincent’s Theological Seminary, open from 1859 to 1867, and the Saint Louis Diocesan Seminary, open from 1900 to 1907, were in the same building next to Saint Stephen’s Church in New Orleans. The treatment of Saint Vincent’s describes its finances and gives the reasons for its selection as the relocation site for students from the seminary at LaFourche. Various reasons, including the threat of yellow fever, led to a generally small student body, except for two large groups in 1863 and 1867. The cost …

"An Active And Energetic Bishop": The Appointment Of Joseph Glass, C.M., As Bishop Of Salt Lake City, Stafford Poole C.M. Oct 1994

"An Active And Energetic Bishop": The Appointment Of Joseph Glass, C.M., As Bishop Of Salt Lake City, Stafford Poole C.M.

Vincentian Studies

Vincentian Joseph Glass was the bishop of Salt Lake City, Utah, from 1915 to 1926. He was appointed because he was considered “vigorous and competent,” and the diocese desperately needed that kind of leadership. His appointment was also due to the influence of Bishop Thomas Conaty of Los Angeles and the fact that Archbishop Patrick Riordan of San Francisco died “at a crucial point in the search” for a bishop for Salt Lake. Controversy during Glass’s career prior to his elevation, the problems of the diocese of Salt Lake, and the troubles surrounding other proposed successors to the bishopric are …

Vincent De Paul's View Of Common Life In The Congregation Of The Mission, Douglas Slawson C.M. Apr 1992

Vincent De Paul's View Of Common Life In The Congregation Of The Mission, Douglas Slawson C.M.

Vincentian Studies

For Vincent de Paul, community life enabled the Congregation to follow Jesus’s example, both in the work of evangelization and in the development of Christlike virtues that supported the work. To be effective missionaries—to travel and to share the life of the poor while evangelizing them—confreres were to embrace poverty. They also were to model Christian behavior for others by demonstrating it among themselves; this was accomplished through the virtues of uniformity, patience, and fraternal charity. Uniformity meant that the confreres were to have the same judgments and practice. Patience called for the tolerance of each other’s faults and the …

The Historical Context Of The Age Of Gold: France 1560–1660, James Hitchcock Apr 1990

The Historical Context Of The Age Of Gold: France 1560–1660, James Hitchcock

Vincentian Studies

Religion and politics were inextricably linked in France during the century that spanned 1560–1660. The ultra-Catholic Guises and the Protestant Bourbons vied for the throne, while the monarchs and their regents used alternately used religious tension and tolerance to keep both sides at bay. Religious differences marked the combatants in frequent civil wars. The conflicts ended with the Edict of Nantes in 1598, which guaranteed religious freedom to the Huguenots, although tension continued. James Hitchcock discusses various other topics, including: the Ancien Regime’s structure, Cardinal Richelieu’s ascendancy, his efforts to consolidate royal power and defeat the Habsburgs, the rise of …

Saint Vincent And Saint Louise In Relation To The French School Of Spirituality, Raymond Deville S.S. Apr 1990

Saint Vincent And Saint Louise In Relation To The French School Of Spirituality, Raymond Deville S.S.

Vincentian Studies

Raymond Deville holds that Vincent de Paul and Louise de Marillac were of the French school of spirituality, but were not totally Berullian. The French school focused on domestic and foreign missions and was concerned with the renewal of parish life, the education of the poor, and the formation of priests. With regard to formation, the French school accepted only what would be called major seminarians today and stressed the necessity of having a vocation for the priesthood, ideas that were both unusual for the time. However, Vincent’s conception of Jesus was simpler and more practical than that of other …

Documentation A Short Account Of The Congregation Of The Mission Published In 1656

Vincentian Studies

This brief history of the Congregation by an anonymous author is the first known published account. The author was probably not a Vincentian but obtained information from someone who was. The article explains the Congregation’s purposes and how they are achieved. The community’s daily life and rules are outlined. Descriptions of the order of missions, the training given to ordinands, and the conferences held for priests are also included. Inaccuracies in this account are corrected by Stafford Poole, C.M.

Vincent De Paul In Nineteenth-Century England: Charles Lowder, The Society Of The Holy Cross And A Church In Crisis, Nicholas T. Groves Apr 1988

Vincent De Paul In Nineteenth-Century England: Charles Lowder, The Society Of The Holy Cross And A Church In Crisis, Nicholas T. Groves

Vincentian Studies

Inspired by Vincent de Paul, Anglican clergyman Charles Lowder founded the Society of the Holy Cross in 1855 to strengthen the spiritual life of the clergy, conduct missions, and reform the Church of England. Led by the aristocracy and seeing sin in poverty, the Church of England neglected persons who were poor. Lowder and his Society formed mission houses to work among them, and the clergy who served there had a community life based on the Congregation. He also founded a group of sisters based on the Daughters of Charity. Lowder was part of the second generation of the Oxford …

Saint Vincent De Paul And Human Formation, Jaime Corera C.M. Jan 1988

Saint Vincent De Paul And Human Formation, Jaime Corera C.M.

Vincentian Studies

Vincent de Paul’s approach to formation is discussed. He felt it was essential to keep “the knowledge of Jesus Christ crucified” at the center of such efforts. Jaime Corera offers Vincent’s formation of Antoine Portail and Francois du Coudray as case studies. These two confreres played many important roles in the Congregation, and Vincent adapted his approach to suit the talents and personalities of each man, with varying degrees of success. Vincent’s formation of the clergy is described, which he mainly saw as step toward the greater work of serving the poor. Therefore, humility in the clergy was vital, and …

A Fresh Look At Francis Clet, Thomas Davitt C.M. Oct 1986

A Fresh Look At Francis Clet, Thomas Davitt C.M.

Vincentian Studies

Francis Clet’s biographers often let his martyrdom overshadow or distort his humanity by endowing his life with the heroism seen at the end of it. Thomas Davitt quotes extensively from Clet’s letters to give a factual account of his life, which includes his personal characteristics, his preparations for the China mission, and the problems he faced there. The circumstances of his sentencing and imprisonment are given, along with his own perspective on them. Also included are Clet’s observations of how the practice of religion and the treatment of prisoners in China differ from France.

The Major Studies On Vincent De Paul, Carey J. Leonard C.M. Apr 1985

The Major Studies On Vincent De Paul, Carey J. Leonard C.M.

Vincentian Studies

The real Vincent de Paul, versus the legendary one, was not known for several centuries because his communities restricted his writings to themselves. This article categorizes and critiques the major works on him. It begins with the four institutional biographies from before the twentieth century by Louis Abelly, Pierre Collet, Michel-Ulysse Maynard, and Louis-Victor-Emile Bougaud. Twentieth century works are then evaluated, starting with those of Pierre Coste. Historical studies of the Church and spirituality during and after Vincent’s time place him in social, political, and ecclesial context. Other efforts examine how his works and spirituality may be applied to contemporary …

Vincent De Paul And Catechetical Renewal, Grace Dorr D.C. Jul 1984

Vincent De Paul And Catechetical Renewal, Grace Dorr D.C.

Vincentian Studies

Vatican II divided Catholics over whether to use its catechism and approach or whether to use the Council of Trent’s. People wondered about how to translate the faith into today’s language. Vincent de Paul faced a similar problem during the Counter-Reformation as he instructed the clergy and the poor, both of whom were often woefully undereducated about the faith. Millions of copies of his two catechisms were distributed, and he worked as a catechist himself. He also instructed his priests, the Daughters of Charity, and members of the Confraternities of Charity as catechists. He emphasized using language that was easy …

Recollections Of The Establishment Of The Congregation Of The Mission In The United States, Part 1, Joseph Rosati C.M. Jan 1980

Recollections Of The Establishment Of The Congregation Of The Mission In The United States, Part 1, Joseph Rosati C.M.

Vincentian Studies

Joseph Rosati accompanied Felix De Andreis on the first mission to the United States from 1816 to 1818. Rosati held many important positions, succeeding De Andreis as superior of the American Vincentians. This first translation of his memoirs covers why the Vincentians were selected to found a seminary in St. Louis and the European part of their journey to America. The discussion of De Andreis’s reasons for accepting the mission and his preparations for it includes a transcription of his own words. The account of the journey describes the hardships the Vincentians faced and the people who helped them along …
