Undergraduate Accounting Programmes In Developing Countries: The Case Of Iran, Jamal Roudaki Jan 1996

Undergraduate Accounting Programmes In Developing Countries: The Case Of Iran, Jamal Roudaki

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

After the Islamic Revolution in Iran (1979), the entire education system in the country was drastically changed to make it more relevant to the Islamic philosophy. Accordingly, since the beginning of 1982 the undergraduate accounting programmes of all universities and other higher education institutions have been conducted on the basis of a centrally designed common curriculum. From the inception, however, there has been criticism that several features of this new accounting curriculum are not appropriate in terms of the educational objectives and the socio-economic conditions of the country.

This study examined the nature and content of the above accounting curriculum …

Access Control In Object-Oriented Databases, Ahmad Baraani-Dastjerdi Jan 1996

Access Control In Object-Oriented Databases, Ahmad Baraani-Dastjerdi

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

In a multi-user environment with a large shared database, it is necessary that the security of data in the database is considered. To enforce security of data in a database, we start with an access control model. The model defines which users have what privileges to which information. There are three different types of access control policies: discretionary access control (DAC), mandatory access control (MAC), and role-based access control (RBAC). A discretionary access control specifies users' privileges to different system resources, including their ability to transfer their privileges to other users. In a mandatory access control, the access of data …

Treatment Planning For Boron Neutron Capture Therapy For Cancer, Steven A. Wallace Jan 1996

Treatment Planning For Boron Neutron Capture Therapy For Cancer, Steven A. Wallace

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

Over the past 40 years, tremendous advances in science and technology have been reflected in the techniques for diagnosis and therapy of cancer.

With such an enormous use of resources, we should realistically expect a reduction in incidence and mortality rates. While this is true for some types of cancers, the same cannot be said for the overall profile of mortality due to cancer. Indeed an increase in incidence and mortality from primary brain cancer in the elderly has been reported in the U S A and Europe. Clearly what must be recognised is that a significant shift in the …

Technology Based Learning And Quality In Australian Universities, Dianne Patricia Chambers Jan 1996

Technology Based Learning And Quality In Australian Universities, Dianne Patricia Chambers

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

The introduction o f quality' practices and of information technology in teaching to the tertiary system have each been initiatives in Australian universities in the early to mid-1990s. The Department of Employment, Education and Training (DEET) supported these changes to the Australian tertiary system through the Committee for Quality Assurance in Higher Education (CQAHE) and through the Committee for the Advancement of University Teaching (CAUT). Through the CQAHE 'Quality' money was made available to universities that could show that they had quality assurance/Total Quality Management practices in place. CAUT offered small grants to university teachers to promote innovations in university …

Evaluation Of Language Software Packages From The Point Of View Of Language Learning And Principles Of Instructional Design, Guodong Jia Jan 1996

Evaluation Of Language Software Packages From The Point Of View Of Language Learning And Principles Of Instructional Design, Guodong Jia

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

Many evaluations of software packages can be found in the literature, but not so many can be identified concerning the evaluation of language software packages, and particularly there are few relating to the evaluation of listening comprehension packages. This thesis presents a report on the evaluation of listening comprehension packages with the focus on identifying the most appropriate features from both language learning and instructional design perspectives in a computer-based learning environment.

Two listening software packages -- "Listen!" and "TriplePlay-English!" -- have been selected as samples which include most features available in listening packages at the time this research was …

End-To-End Quality Of Service Support For Integrated Multimedia Workstations, Peter James Reynolds Jan 1996

End-To-End Quality Of Service Support For Integrated Multimedia Workstations, Peter James Reynolds

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

This dissertation describes a method of providing network communications at a specified Quality of Service (QoS) in an integrated multimedia environment. A Communications Resource Manager (CRM) is used to coordinate application requests with current workstation and network usage in order to maximise the QoS perceived by the user. The CRM forms part of a software architecture to service generic multimedia applications. It uses the principles of connection management to establish, coordinate and teardown multimedia connections. Where required the CRM can insert intermediate QoS control and monitoring modules into the information flow to match application requirements, workstation capabilities, and media formats. …

The Development And Validation Of Conjugate Imaging Techniques In The Automated Reproduction Of Three Dimensional Coordinates From Multiple Camera Images, Allan B. Carman Jan 1996

The Development And Validation Of Conjugate Imaging Techniques In The Automated Reproduction Of Three Dimensional Coordinates From Multiple Camera Images, Allan B. Carman

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

The dimensional quantitative analysis of human motion requires the reproduction of three dimensional coordinates from multiple camera images. In current photogrammetric systems the ability to identify and track individual camera image points imposes limitations on the accuracy and complexity of human motion analysis. Current photogrammetric systems are limited by the number of cameras, three dimensional segments, markers per segment, and the complexity of movement possible due to the increased difficulty and time required to reproduce three dimensional coordinates. The automated reconstruction and tracking of three dimensional coordinates may overcome these limitations by removing the necessity to track and identify two …

Consumer Perceptions Of Services For People With Severe And Profound Intellectual Disabilities, Margaret Gerry Jan 1996

Consumer Perceptions Of Services For People With Severe And Profound Intellectual Disabilities, Margaret Gerry

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

This study examined consumer perceptions of services for people with severe and profound intellectual disabilities in the Illawarra area. The nature and severity of the disability involved necessitated the use of family members, staff and advocates as sources of information. A total of 147 clients participated and a representative of each client (with one exception) was interviewed. They were asked to identify all services used by the client in the previous five years and to rate their level of satisfaction with these services on a 7-point Likert scale. They were then asked to identify factors important to them in rating …

Optical And Radio Observations Of Young Stellar Objects, Stacy L. Mader Jan 1996

Optical And Radio Observations Of Young Stellar Objects, Stacy L. Mader

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

An exciting area of research in star formation is tlie study of outflows driven by mass loss from Young Stellar Objects (YSOs). This mass loss can be as much as 10"^ MQ yr 1 with wind velocities of the order 300 km s'^. The nature of the wind that drives this Tnass loss is still uncertain. Evidence that a YSO is undergoing mass loss is provided through the effect the stellar wind has on the surrounding medium. Phenomena such as bipolar molecular outflows, masers and the Herbig-Haro (HH) objects are all indicators of a YSO undergoing mass loss. Visible observations …

Accounting Implications In Social Welfare Payments: A Foucauldian Analysis, Ratnam Alagiah Jan 1996

Accounting Implications In Social Welfare Payments: A Foucauldian Analysis, Ratnam Alagiah

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

Here is a history of our times written on an unfamiliar theme. It is a study that uses Foucault's archaeology and genealogy, as method in history, to explain three central themes. It seeks to explicate, firstly, the relationship between accounting knowledge and power. Secondly, it seeks to show how human beings create an object in accounting knowledge and how they later become its subject. Finally this study seeks to demonstrate that a human science such as accounting is instrumental in social control. Income, the alpha and omega of accounting, is discoursed and constructed, making up accounting knowledge. The archaeology of …

Distribution Of Mechanical Energy Fractions During Maximal Ergometer Rowing, Richard M. Smith Jan 1996

Distribution Of Mechanical Energy Fractions During Maximal Ergometer Rowing, Richard M. Smith

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

The assessment of mechanical energy expenditure (MEE) during human movement is an essential step in the determination of the proficiency of the movement. Dynamics methods of estimating MEE have their derivation in the sources of MEE , the joint forces and moments, and are less arbitrary about the rules governing energy compensation when compared with instantaneous segment energy methods. Further, dynamics methods enable the exercise scientist to attribute energy costs and savings to particular body segments, sources and mechanisms. This thesis describes the application of a dynamics method (Aleshinsky, 1986a-e) to the mechanical energy analysis of maximal ergometer rowing.

Nikolai Aleksandrovich Rozhkov (1868-1927): Historian And Revolutionary, John Antonio Gonzalez Rondan Jan 1996

Nikolai Aleksandrovich Rozhkov (1868-1927): Historian And Revolutionary, John Antonio Gonzalez Rondan

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

Nikolai Aleksandrovich Rozhkov (1868-1927) was a wellknown and Influential Russian historian and political activist. He was held in great respect by his teachers, colleagues and students and was regarded by some as the most gifted disciple of Kliuchevskii, the greatest of all Russian historians. Kliuchevskii held Rozhkov in higher esteem than he did Mikhail Nikolaevich Pokrovskii, who eventually became the leading historian of the early Soviet period. Despite such accolades, no major work has been written on Rozhkov either in the Soviet Union or in the West. An assessment of his historical writings and of his political activities is long …

Arthropods And Fire: Studies In A Southeast Australian Heathland, Patrick M. Tap Jan 1996

Arthropods And Fire: Studies In A Southeast Australian Heathland, Patrick M. Tap

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

The studies described in this thesis were aimed at unravelling the relationships between fire and arthropods. This has been investigated in a number ofstudies in the literature. Some studies reported finding fewer arthropods in burned than in unburned sites, others reported finding more, and still others found no difference. Factors that may help to explain this variety of outcomes include differences in arthropod taxa and habitat type, time since fire, and methods and duration of sampling. I analysed the frequencies of studies reporting fewer, equivalent or more arthropods in collections from burned compared to unburned sites for eight categories (i.e. …

Cardiovascular Regulation During Passive Cycle Exercise In Trained And Untrained Males, Yati Nurhayati Jan 1996

Cardiovascular Regulation During Passive Cycle Exercise In Trained And Untrained Males, Yati Nurhayati

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

Cardiovascular responses of trained male Cyclists (20.30 ±1.11 years; n=10), trained Runners (26.20 ±1.10 years; n=10), and fit but untrained Controls (22.00 ±0.75 years; n=10) were examined at supine and upright rest, and during passive cycle exercise. Mean maximal aerobic power of Cyclists (76.25 ±1.44 ml.kg-1.min-1) and Runners (65.50 ±2.16 ml.kg-1.min-1 was significantly higher (p<0.05) than that of Controls (46.31 ±2.36 ml.kg -1.min-1. Resting heart rate of Cyclists (58.43 ±2.69 b.min-1), Runners (57.21 ±3.47 b.min-1, and Controls (65.38 ±2.93 b.min-1) was not significantly different (p>0.05). Impedance cardiography was used to examine the response of heart rate, stroke volume, cardiac output, contractility of the heart, and arteriolar resistance, during passive cycle exercise at three different intensities (30 rpm, 60 rpm, and 80 rpm). Blood pressure and rate pressure product were …

A Tool For Design And Analysis Of Protocols, Viswanathan Narain Jan 1996

A Tool For Design And Analysis Of Protocols, Viswanathan Narain

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

The existence of strong cryptoalgorithms is not sufficient to guarantee the security and/or authentication required in a system. To obtain an assurance for the security and/or authentication required, the underlying cryptoalgorithm must be used within a set of rules or procedures known as a protocol. Even if the cryptoalgorithm were secure, it is possible to subvert the protocol. There are numerous instances of failures in protocols employing public key and private key cryptoalgorithms. Several systems exist for analysis of protocols, to find such failures in them. These systems use formal analysis methods based on a model of communicating state machines …

Theorem Proving Algorithms Using Lambda Calculus And Combinatory Logic, Ramzy Master Rizkalla Jan 1996

Theorem Proving Algorithms Using Lambda Calculus And Combinatory Logic, Ramzy Master Rizkalla

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

The work of Martin Bunder [4] presents a simple version of the Ben - Yelles Algorithm as a tree. Given a formula of implicational logic, the algorithm determines the (possibly empty) set of X - terms w^hich have the given formula as a type. By the formulas as types isomorphism, it follows that this determines the set of its proofs. This is done in a finite numbers of steps. The algorithm which apphes to intuitionistic logic, has been extended to some weaker logics such as BCI, BCK etc. In this thesis we extend the Ben - Yelles algorithm to logics …

Molecular Cloning Of Protein Phosphates And Protein Kinase Genes From Crop Plants, Tripty A. Hirani Jan 1996

Molecular Cloning Of Protein Phosphates And Protein Kinase Genes From Crop Plants, Tripty A. Hirani

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

Protein kinases and protein phosphatases are two very large enzyme families functioning in many important cellular processes such as regulation of cell cycle, signal transduction, self-incompatibility and disease resistance in plants. Some members of these two families have been cloned and subjected to detailed studies, but the majority remains unidentified, especially in plants. Barley and maize are two important crops in the world and also excellent experimental organisms particularly in the area of molecular genetics. Genes encoding protein kinase have been cloned from maize and barley, however, genes encoding protein phosphatase have not been cloned from barley. The signal transduction …

The Technical And Economic Feasibility Of Mining The Near-Earth Asteroids, Mark Joseph Sonter Jan 1996

The Technical And Economic Feasibility Of Mining The Near-Earth Asteroids, Mark Joseph Sonter

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

Future space industrialization will prompt the search for in-space resources, for construction and propellant mass.

This thesis reviews the literature regarding space resources, and notes the tremendous expansion in knowledge of the Near-Earth asteroids over the last decade, in regard to their population, compositions, and accessibility, making them primary targets of interest.

The literature highlights, and this thesis addresses, the need to consider details of potential mining and processing methods.

The literature also highlights the need for rigorous ways of comparing alternative hypothetical projects and deciding between competing targets, and competing mining, processing, propulsion, and power system choices, which all …

This study addresses the critical service intangibles of a long-term relationship between Company A and a major Australian bank. It employs service quality, organisational buying behaviour and organisational culture perspective in approaching issues of total quality. The results of this explorative study reveal that an appropriate diagnosis of intangibles can contribute to the understandings of the relationship and consequently enhance the credibility of organisational decisions.

Contemporary Processes Of Tunnelling And Gullying At Bungonia, Southern Tablelands, New South Wales, Maria Coleman Jan 1996

Contemporary Processes Of Tunnelling And Gullying At Bungonia, Southern Tablelands, New South Wales, Maria Coleman

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

The results of an investigation into the processes of erosion occurring in the Bungonia District of the Southern Tablelands, NSW Australia are presented in this thesis. The Bungonia District contains numerous examples of erosion gullies which have resulted from processes of tunnelling and gullying. Three erosion sites {Winston Gully, Bungonia 2 and Bungonia 3) were investigated in terms of the processes occurring and various physical and chemical soil properties. Large erosion gullies such as Winston Gully not only render agricultural land unproductive, but are suspected of contributing large quantities of sediment into the Shoalhaven River Catchment.

The aim of this project is to develop a customised benchmarking model for TELKOM. The literature review showed that …

Providing An Atm Medium Access Controller For Asynchronous Traffic Over Fddi-Ii, Bernard John Giannetti Jan 1996

Providing An Atm Medium Access Controller For Asynchronous Traffic Over Fddi-Ii, Bernard John Giannetti

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

This thesis presents the research and development for an ATM/FDDI-II hardware device called an A-MAC (ATM-Medium Access Controller). The A-MAC enables the isochronous capacity of an FDDI-II LAN to cany ATM cells between multiple ATM users connected to the FDDI-II. In effect, an FDDI-II with A-MACs functions as a distributed ATM switch. The A-MAC segments user PDUs into ATM cells and transmits those cells into timeslots on the isochronous channel. Cells received from the isochronous channel are reassembled by the A-MAC back into the original PDU.

Technological Change In Nurse Education As A Professionalisation Strategy, Peter Thomas Jan 1996

Technological Change In Nurse Education As A Professionalisation Strategy, Peter Thomas

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

The transfer of basic nurse education to the tertiary sector in New South Wales brought about major changes to the philosophy, content and presentation of the educational preparation of registered nurses. From a simplified biomedical model of illness which promoted the nurse's role as doctor's assistant, a new nursing educational technology has emerged which emphasises a holistic model of wellness, nursing independence and professionalism. While there are valid educational reasons for this transfer of nurse education, a far more important rationale of the nursing leadership of this country for their continued support of this move their desire to professionalise nursing. …

A Performance Model For Parallel Real-Time Systems, Il Kyu Lee Jan 1996

A Performance Model For Parallel Real-Time Systems, Il Kyu Lee

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

Real-time systems need to exploit high-speed parallel processing technology to meet their strict timing requirements. A general parallel architecture may have multiple stages connected in a pipeline, where each stage has multiple servers.

This thesis deals with performance analysis of such parallel real-time systems. A regular pipeline model is proposed as a mathematically tractable model. A concept of optimal instance blocking is introduced to achieve flow balance at stage. A minimum-response-priority-assignment algorithm is presented to achieve the minimum end-to-end response time for each task. A concept of instance distribution is introduced to schedule a task whose execution time is greater …

An Examination Of The Characteristics Of Young, Potentially Gifted Children From Culturally Diverse Backgrounds As The Basis For The Development Of Appropriate Educational Programs, Yvonne Emily Carnellor Jan 1996

An Examination Of The Characteristics Of Young, Potentially Gifted Children From Culturally Diverse Backgrounds As The Basis For The Development Of Appropriate Educational Programs, Yvonne Emily Carnellor

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

Despite agreement among scholars and researchers that identification of gifted children should be based on multiple criteria, current research continues to indicate a heavy reliance on an IQ score (Alvino, McDonnel & Richert, 1981; Frasier, 1987). This practice often prevents economically disadvantaged, culturally diverse, bilingual, or minority students from taking part in a gifted program.

Significant numbers of these students do not meet traditional criteria for gifted programs, but possess cognitive, motivational, artistic or creative potentials that clearly enable them to participate in the types of programmed experiences designed to develop and nurture academic and creative behaviours. Gallagher (1988) noted …

Quality Appraisal Of Higher Education Research: An Action-Oriented, Process-Based Alternative To Performance Indicators, S. Curtis Jan 1996

Quality Appraisal Of Higher Education Research: An Action-Oriented, Process-Based Alternative To Performance Indicators, S. Curtis

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

The policy themes currently steering Australian higher education research practice, have given rise to an output-oriented, performance-based, quality appraisal framework that is oriented towards narrowly conceived accountability purposes. Because it is so narrowly conceived, this framework is both inadequate for quality appraisal purposes and insufficient for legitimating and rewarding research practice. The thesis argues that with this appraisal framework, both the physical and cognitive infrastructures that sustain research activity are being put at risk. This is because performance-based measures cannot recognise or reward the processes that secure, sustain and renew flexibility and responsiveness in research pursuits. The thesis proposes that …

Social And Intercultural Dynamics In Industry's Commercialisation Of Technology From Publicly-Funded Research Laboratories, Ronald W. Murnain Jan 1996

Social And Intercultural Dynamics In Industry's Commercialisation Of Technology From Publicly-Funded Research Laboratories, Ronald W. Murnain

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

The commercialisation process through which industry uses technology from publicly-funded research laboratories, involves a laboratory and one or more companies establishing a commercialisation interface. This brings together the sometimes conflicting research and business cultures.

Although commercialisation is ultimately a social process, studies of commercialisation interfaces have often focused more on the contractual, administrative or economic structures set up to manage them, than on the social and intercultural dynamics that create and sustain them. So previous research has largely left unanswered the questions that drive this thesis:

* How does the social structure of the laboratory-company interface emerge and endure?

* …
