Targeting Tgf-Β During Epithelial-To-Mesenchymal Progression As An Effective Therapy Against Colorectal Cancer, Joyce Fan
Undergraduate Research
Colorectal cancer is one of the most common cancers worldwide. Understanding the mechanisms of colorectal cancer progression is crucial for the development of effective therapeutics. Epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition is a hallmark feature of cancer and is defined as the loss of epithelial cell features, such as apical-basal polarity and high expression of cell adhesion molecules, and the development of mesenchymal features, such as lack of polarity and increased cell mobility. Epithelial-to-mesenchymal is essential for cell migration, proliferation, and tumor growth. Both the TGF-β and SMAD pathway are associated with colorectal cancer progression. TGF-β is crucial to the cellular mechanism of cell …

Students majoring in a STEM discipline whose sequence of collegiate mathematics begins at the developmental level follow a unique progression towards degree completion. With an elongated sequence of mathematics courses, these students have already had exposure to collegiate mathematics when enrolling in a college algebra course. A structured multiple case study provided a context for understanding students’ perceptions about how their developmental mathematics experiences may have influenced their experiences in college algebra. Qualitative data was gathered through interviews with three students who are majoring in a STEM field of study. The selected students had similar quantitative literacy expectations for their …
The Impact Of Isolation From Other Members Of The Greater Bamboo Lemur (Prolemur Simus) Species On The Behavior Of A Lone Greater Bamboo Lemur In Ranomafana National Park, Marissa N. Mccandless, Alex Casamassima, Sophie Thomas
Undergraduate Research
Across Madagascar, many lemur species are declining in number due to deforestation perpetuated by slash and burn agriculture. Ranomafana National Park hosts 12 unique lemur species, one of which has a local population of just a single individual- the Greater Bamboo lemur (Prolemur simus). Being extremely social beings, we theorize that isolation from members of one’s species will change behavioral patterns. To test this hypothesis, we used focal animal sampling to record the behavior of the Greater Bamboo lemur for about 40 hours over a five day period. We compared our results to behavioral data collected of lemurs in a …

Executive Functioning And Sluggish Cognitive Tempo As Potential Mediators In The Relationship Between Adhd And Emotional Intelligence, Emma Bradley
Undergraduate Research
Introduction. ADHD is a neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by executive functioning (EF) deficits and is associated with sluggish cognitive tempo (SCT) and reduced emotional intelligence (EI). The present study evaluated the mediating role of EF and SCT in the ADHD-EI relationship. Methods. Forty-nine college-aged participants completed self-report measures of ADHD symptoms, SCT, EF, and EI. Participants were remunerated $10 for their participation. Results. Regression analyses demonstrated that ADHD symptoms predicted EI, EF, and SCT (p’s < 0.001). Contrary to hypothesis, neither EF nor SCT significantly mediated the relationship between ADHD and EI. Conclusion. Future research ought to aim to better understand the mechanisms accounting for the impairments associated with ADHD and EI, with a focus on emotion regulation. A better understanding of this complex relationship can lead to more effective intervention strategies for those with ADHD.
The Correlation Between Perceived Discrimination And Social Anxiety In College Students Who Identify As Lgbtq, Aleasha Chaw
The Correlation Between Perceived Discrimination And Social Anxiety In College Students Who Identify As Lgbtq, Aleasha Chaw
Undergraduate Research
Discrimination can have many adverse effects on a college student. Stress, anxiety, depression, suicidal ideology, and social motivation are some of the negative impacts to the psychological well-being of those exposed to discrimination. Social interaction anxiety in relation to sexual orientation or gender identity may impact social motivation in college students. The motivation to engage in socialization on campus may be hindered by an individual’s experience with discrimination. Though a diverse student body may help lower instances of discrimination, students may still be influenced by stigmas within these groups which may impact physical and psychological behaviors. The author of the …

Research Outreach Interdisciplinary Activity To Classify Olive Oil Blends Integrating Multicolor Imaging, Image Processing, And Machine Learning, Allan Abraham, Kameshwaran Balachandran
Undergraduate Research
This outreach undergraduate research project presents a low-cost method to distinguish the quality of different olive oils. The proposed method is based on an indirect measurement of the chlorophyll molecules present when a green laser diode illuminates the oil sample. Oil blends can be classified into five classes (no olive oil, light olive oil, medium olive oil, olive oil, and extra virgin olive oil) by quantifying the ratio of the red channel versus the green channel along the laser illumination path from a color image. After labeling each oil blend, a convolutional neural network has been implemented and trained to …

Video-Based Instruction In Social-Emotional Skills For Youth With Intellectual Disabilities In A Summer Vocational Rehabilitation Program, Parker Heman
Undergraduate Research
Social-emotional skills work collaboratively with academic skills to help students connect content to real-world challenges. For successful future employment, today’s students will need to master social-emotional skills such as communication, collaboration, and problem-solving. Students with intellectual disabilities, however, possess severe deficits in mental capacity and emotional skills. For those students with intellectual disabilities, who already possess multiple employment and educational challenges; lack of social-emotional skills has been identified by their schoolto-work transition support team members as a common barrier to employment. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, a vocational rehabilitation program for students with disabilities that would have included a face-to-face …
Evidence For Redefining Dietary Fiber, Joshua Daw
Evidence For Redefining Dietary Fiber, Joshua Daw
Undergraduate Research
There are currently three macronutrients recognized within the field of dietetics due to their gram quantity intake and requirement for human health; this includes proteins, fats, and carbohydrates. Dietary Fiber, however, is not considered to be an independent macronutrient despite its gram quantity intake and requirement for human health. Additionally, Dietary Fiber is a net-zero energy yielding nutrient unlike other carbohydrates. Although Dietary Fiber should remain chemically categorized as a carbohydrate, for the purposes of dietetic prescription and education, Dietary Fiber should be redefined as the fourth macronutrient. This definition shift would illustrate both the importance and complexity of this …

In an ever-changing society, it is essential to understand how students learn best. In society today, the growing area of online learning is prevalent. With limited research regarding online versus traditional face-to-face learning, there is a need for more information on this topic. Online versus traditional learning in college undergraduates at universities is apparent, especially since the start of COVID-19 (El Refae et al., 2021). While face-to-face learning was the usual format that undergraduate college students utilized, the transformation to online learning changed rapidly. The research in this study area also changed (Van Der Werf & Sabatier, 2009). With each …
Count On Me?: Explore The Effect Of Covid-19 City Out-Migration On The 2020 Census: A Case Study On New York City, Clara Fong
Undergraduate Research
The United States’ decennial census is the gold standard for enumerating the country’s population. Its data are used by private developers as well as federal and state governments to efficiently allocate federal resources, determine Congressional representation, and provide access to public safety and emergency preparedness (Why We Conduct the Decennial Census). Historically, the census has seen the lowest response rates from low-income populations, communities of color, foreign-born populations, and children (O’hare, 2019). However, early reports on the 2020 Census uncovered that in major metropolitan cities, notably in New York City, these may not be the only undercounted groups. Historically high-income, …
We Charge Genocide: An Examination Of Racism As Black Genocide In America, Jasmine Jordan
We Charge Genocide: An Examination Of Racism As Black Genocide In America, Jasmine Jordan
Undergraduate Research
The US Civil Rights Movement and race relations in the US have been met with recent academic popularity, with different historiographies being hotly contested (Hall, 2007) – the result is a complex understanding of African American history (Dwyer, 2000; Lawson, 1991). African Americans were enslaved, segregated, massacred, beaten, raped, and lynched for hundreds of years, leading some academics to believe that African Americans faced a genocide, specifically a ‘Black Genocide’ (Wright, 1969). For the purpose of this essay, the term genocide will follow Lemkin’s orginal conception of the word as well as the United Nation’s definition, where genocide is not …
Fault-Free Tilings, T. Elise Dettling, Amelia Goetzinger
Fault-Free Tilings, T. Elise Dettling, Amelia Goetzinger
Undergraduate Research
Given a p×q rectangular board (height p and width q), we may fill in the area with 2×1 tiles. We say the board is tileable if the board can be filled with non-overlapping tiles leaving no open space. Not all boards are tileable, for example a 5 × 5 board is not tileable because it has an odd area. A fault-free tiling exists on the board if every line through the board parallel to a side goes through a tile. Previous work on this subject has been completed by Ron Graham in “Fault-Free Tilings of Rectangles" and Emily Montelius in …

Analysis Of Human Cervical Cell Images From Pap Smears For Classification, Caroline Fernandez, Tanvi Patel, Krushang Pandya
Undergraduate Research
Cervical cancer is the fourth most commonly occurring cancer in women. It can be prevented by regular screenings to find precancerous cells through the Papanicolaou Smear Test and microscopy which can show cellular abnormalities. However, the manual microscopic screening for the nuclear abnormalities is subjective and prone to error, making automated detection a necessity. This study aims to quantify the nuclear features related to shape characteristics of normal and abnormal cells from pap smear images and examine potential detection of multi classes. Using the ground truth images of normal and abnormal cells we extracted the nuclear shape features that corresponded …
