Background/aim: Thoracic trauma accounts for approximately 25% of all trauma-related deaths and remains a significant public health challenge. Early identification of high-risk patients is essential for improving clinical outcomes. The present study evaluates the prognostic value of the lactate dehydrogenase-to-albumin ratio (LDAR) in predicting 28-day mortality in patients with thoracic trauma.
Materials and methods: This retrospective observational study was conducted at a Level 1 trauma center between September 2022 and February 2025, and included adult patients presenting with thoracic trauma who underwent thoracic computed tomography. Demographic characteristics, clinical parameters, laboratory values, and 28-day mortality were analyzed. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) …

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences
The widespread use of polypropylene-based face masks during the COVID-19 pandemic created a significant and persistent source of plastic pollution. This review aims to provide an integrative assessment of the environmental, toxicological, and public health implications of face mask litter and evaluate current waste management challenges and emerging technological solutions in the postpandemic context. A narrative review approach was employed, synthesizing literature published between 2020 and 2025 and indexed in major scientific databases including Web of Science, Scopus, and PubMed. Studies were selected based on their relevance to the issues of environmental contamination, microplastic generation, toxicological effects, regulatory frameworks, and …

Background/aim: Parenteral feeding is used in critically ill patients when enteral nutrition is inadequate or intolerable, and the gastrointestinal tract is not functioning properly. Lipid emulsions play a major role in parenteral nutrition because they supply necessary fatty acids and a high-calorie density. We investigated the effects of parenteral lipid emulsions on mesenteric perfusion, inflammation-induced oxidation, and organ damage in lipopolysaccharide-induced mice endotoxemia model.
Materials and methods: In septic mice, organ damage induced by lipopolysaccharide was assessed by histopathology and biochemical examination. Additionally, an ultrasonic blood flowmeter was used to measure the impact of lipid emulsions on mesenteric blood flow. …

A Model Based On Dynamic Hematologic Parameters To Predict Short Term Clinical Events In Pediatric Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia , Neryal Tahta, Sali̇h Gözmen, Sultan Okur Acar
Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences
Background/aim: Acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) treatment is frequently complicated by infections, emergency visits, and therapy interruptions, yet early prediction of short-term clinical deterioration remains challenging. Traditional prognostic markers rely on static laboratory values, whereas dynamic hematologic fluctuations may provide earlier warning signals. This study presents and internally validates a clinically applicable prediction model based on dynamic hematologic parameters and clinician-documented symptoms for predicting short-term (7-day) clinical events in children with ALL.
Materials and methods: Included in this retrospective study were 44 pediatric ALL patients treated with Berlin-Frankfurt-Münster-based protocols between January 2023 and June 2025. Weekly observation units were created by …

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences
Background/aim: Osteoporosis is a multifactorial skeletal disease that predominantly affects postmenopausal women and is characterized by reduced bone mass and an increased risk of fractures. Growing evidence suggests that the gut microbiota plays a pivotal role in bone metabolism through immunological, endocrine, and metabolic pathways, forming the basis of the so-called gut– bone axis. This study aimed to characterize gut microbiota composition in postmenopausal women with osteoporosis compared with healthy controls.
Materials and methods: Forty postmenopausal women aged 55–65 years were classified into osteoporosis (n = 20) and healthy control (n = 20) groups based on dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry T-scores. …

Background/aim: CD20 deficiency is an autosomal recessive inborn error of immunity (IEI), and the only known affected individual worldwide has been under follow-up in our clinic. Because the consanguineous parents of the index patient are putative carriers, we hypothesized that additional individuals with reduced CD20 expression might exist within their village population. This study aimed to evaluate clinical features associated with IEI and to identify individuals displaying CD20 mean fluorescence intensity (MFI) patterns consistent with putative carrier status, while also providing appropriate genetic counseling.
Materials and methods: This cross-sectional screening study was conducted in December 2024 in Çukurbağ village. Participants …

The devastating earthquakes that struck southeastern Turkiye on February 6, 2023, emphasized the profound societal and healthcare challenges posed by natural disasters. These events highlighted the essential need for healthcare professionals to be well-prepared and equipped with the expertise to manage such crises effectively. Earthquake-induced trauma presents a wide array of medical and surgical complications, frequently requiring urgent hospitalization and specialized management for critically ill patients. However, the limited availability of comprehensive data and evidence-based guidelines complicates optimal care delivery in these scenarios. This review outlines current recommendations for the multidisciplinary management of critically ill patients with earthquake-related trauma. It …

Candida auris is an emerging fungal pathogen that has become a critical global health concern due to its high antifungal resistance and potential to cause nosocomial outbreaks. Since its initial identification in Japan in 2009, C. auris has spread rapidly, posing significant treatment challenges across various healthcare settings worldwide. The biofilm formation ability of C. auris enhances its resilience against disinfectants and antifungal agents, complicating infection control in healthcare environments. This consensus report, developed with the collaboration of several Turkish medical specialty societies, including the Turkish Society of Infectious Diseases and Clinical Microbiology Specialty (EKMUD), the Turkish Society of Anesthesiology …

Background/aim: Injection neuropathy (IN) is a rare but preventable form of iatrogenic nerve injury, particularly affecting the sciatic nerve when intramuscular injections are administered incorrectly. While IN is uncommon in high-income countries, it remains a sig- nificant public health issue in Türkiye, especially in pediatric populations. The aim of this study is to evaluate pediatric IN cases referred to the Council of Forensic Medicine and highlight medicolegal aspects to inform clinical and legal preventive strategies.

Background/aim: Floods are the most frequent natural disasters and pose direct and indirect health risks, some well-documented and others poorly understood. Epidemiological studies help bridge these gaps and guide effective public health responses. In September 2023, Storm Daniel caused severe flooding in Libya, damaging infrastructure, including healthcare facilities. The disaster affected 250,000 people, displaced 48,000, and claimed 15,000 lives, making it the second deadliest natural disaster of the year. This study aims to assess the characteristics of flood-affected patients to improve disaster preparedness.

Background/aim: Ralstonia species are opportunistic, waterborne microorganisms known for their ability to survive and proliferate in a wide range of water-based environments. They can contaminate solutions used for patient care and cause hospital outbreaks due to contaminated solutions. The aim of this study was to investigate the source and clonal relationship of Ralstonia insidiosa bacteremia detected in 28 patients between August and December 2021, as part of an unusual outbreak.Materials and methods: Active prospective surveillance studies were conducted, and environmental samples, including saline, antiseptic, and antibiotic solutions, injectors, arterial blood gas syringes, tap water, and hand soap, were collected from …
