Novel Architectures Of Macromolecular Systems, Gerhard Wegner Jan 1997

Novel Architectures Of Macromolecular Systems, Gerhard Wegner

Turkish Journal of Chemistry

An important thrust in modern macromolecular chemistry is to construct complex architectures either directly from monomer units, or to design macromolecules capable of forming a desired superstructure by self-organization. Chain-rigidity is an example of a structural principle leading to self organization depending on the aspect ratio of the molecular objects and their mutual interactions. These molecularly defined objects serve as the building blocks of systems for which ultrathin layers composed of hairy rod macromolecules (HRM) are an example. Depending on architectural details layered architectures of HRM are models for molecular nanocomposites, exhibit interesting optical, electrochemical, dielectric or barrier properties. They …

Thermal Stabilities Of Hydroxyalkyl Terminated Polydimethylsiloxane Oligomers, İskender Yi̇lgor, Emel Yi̇lgor

Turkish Journal of Chemistry

The thermal stabilities of \alpha,\omega-hydroxypropyl, \alpha,\omega-hydroxybutyl \alpha,\omega-2-hydroxypentyl and \alpha,\omega-hydroxyhexyl terminated polydimethylsiloxane oligomers were investigated. Hydroxypropyl and hydroxybutyl terminated polydimethylsiloxane oligomers showed degradation upon heating through the loss of functional end groups, as determined by FTIR spectroscopy and gel permeation chromatography. \alpha,\omega-Hydroxyhexyl and \alpha,\omega-2-hydroxypentyl terminated polydimethylsiloxane oligomers were stable under similar conditions. The instability of the end groups is due to the backbiting of the terminal silicon in the PDMS by the primary hydroxyl oxygen, leading to the formation of 5-and 6-membered stable, heterocylic compounds. Loss of end groups also resulted in a dramatic increase in the molecular weights of the …

Immobilization Of Glucose Oxidase And Urease In Hydrogel Matrices, İhsan Gürel, M.Yakup Arica, Vasıf Hasirci

Turkish Journal of Chemistry

Immobilization of glucose oxidase and urease in hydrogels of 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylae, and N-vinyl pyrrolidone (NVP) was achieved by irradiation (using UV kand \gamma- rays). The effect of radiation on entrapment efficiencies, retention of activities and swelling rates was obtained. To optimize the system, duration of exposure, reaction temperature, co-monomer concentrations, initiator and cross linker compositions were varied. The repeated reusability of the generated products was also tested. It was found that\gamma-irradiation at very low temperatures did not have a detrimental effect on the enzyme activity. Incorporation of more hydrophilic monomer (NVP), influenced matrix morphology and entrapment efficiencies and retained enzyme …

For example, Hückel-type cyclacenes having 2r (r: 2,3,4,...) benzenoid rings which possess nonbonding molecular orbitals (NBMO) and are thus expected to be open shell structures.

Phase Transition Of Hydrolyzed Polyacrylamide Gels In Aqueous Solutions Of Poly(Ethylene Glycol), Nilhan Kayaman, Oğuz Okay, B. M. Baysal Jan 1997

Phase Transition Of Hydrolyzed Polyacrylamide Gels In Aqueous Solutions Of Poly(Ethylene Glycol), Nilhan Kayaman, Oğuz Okay, B. M. Baysal

Turkish Journal of Chemistry

Hydrolyzed polyacrylamide gels immersed in aqueous solutions of poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) of molecular weight 300 exhibit a discontinuous volume change upon continuous increase of the PEG concentration in the external solution. As the duration of hydrolysis increases, that is, as the proportion of the ionic groups on the network chains increases, the critical concentration of PEG required for a discontinuous volume change rises and, also, the magnitude of the volume collapse becomes larger. Experimental results indicate that the gel collapse in PEG solution is due to the osmotic deswelling of the ionic gel rather than due to a complex formation …

Thermodynamics Of Dissociation Of Strontium, Barium And Nickel Caproates In Water, Hüseyin Topallar, Yüksel Bayrak, Mehmet İşcan

Turkish Journal of Chemistry

The critical micellar concentration (CMC) and thermodynamic parameters (heat \DeltaH_d, free energy \DeltaG_d, and entropy \DeltaS_d, of dissociation) of aqueous solutions of strontium, barium and nickel caproates were determined by conductivity measurements. A Kraus and Bray-type expression was used to evaluate molecular conductance at infinite dilution and theromdynamic parameters. The results confirm that CMC remains unaffected by temperature in the range of 25-55^{\circ}C, and show that the dissociation of soaps is an exothermic reaction and nonspontaneous.

Some Oxidation Reactions Of Isomeric Pyridinecarboxylic Acid Hydrazides, Rashid Iqbal, Samia Ebrahim, Muhammad Ziaulhaq

Turkish Journal of Chemistry

The oxidation reactions of the three isomeric pyridinecarboxylic acid hydrazides were studied using sodium metaperidoate, silver(I) oxide and potassium ferricyanide separately. Potassium ferricyanide emerged as an excellent reagent for preparation of 2-pyridinecarboxaldehyde and 3-pyridinecarboxaldehyde from the respective isomeric pyridinecarboxylic acid hydrazides. Oxidation with silver(I) oxide in each case yielded the corresponding 1,2-dipyridoylhydrazine, while sodium metaperiodate furnished different products with each isomeric pyridinecarboxylic acid hyrazide.

Turkish Journal of Chemistry

Polyvinyl butyrals (PVB) of systematically varying vinyl alcohol content have been synthesized and characterized using wet chemistry, IR, DSC, and TGA. The miscibility of PVB-PVB blends was studied by DSC as a function of vinyl alcohol content and vinyl alcohol content differences between the respective blend components. These data were use to construct an isothermal miscibility map of PVB and to calculate the intramolecular interaction parameter \chi_{VA,VB}. The \chi_{VA,VB} was a function of the absolute level of the vinyl alcohol (VA) and vinyl butyral (VB) contents of the polymers. In addition, the thermal stability of polyvinyl butyral was found to …

Reduction Of Combustion Generated Pollution: Process Modifications And Energy Efficient Power Cycles, Janos M. Beer Jan 1997

Reduction Of Combustion Generated Pollution: Process Modifications And Energy Efficient Power Cycles, Janos M. Beer

Turkish Journal of Chemistry

Theoretical bases of combustion process modifications aimed at the reduction of pollutant emission are examined. It is shown, as an example, of how the minimization of emissions of nitrogen oxides leads to a design protocol that translates results of modeling and of bench scale experiments into guidelines for industrial design. The formation and emission of polycyclic aromatic compounds is also considered, because their formation is strongly favored in "low NO_x flames". In power generation the pollutant emission can be reduced effectively by the improvement of the ``heat rate,"i.e., the thermodynamic efficiency of the power cycle. Combined gas turbine-steam cycles which …
