Transcending The Malaise Of Psychology By Being For The Other: An Alternative View For Psychotherapy, Kylie Marie Burdge
Transcending The Malaise Of Psychology By Being For The Other: An Alternative View For Psychotherapy, Kylie Marie Burdge
Theses and Dissertations
While psychological practice continues to expand, the sobering decline of mental health identified by Hillman and Ventura (1993) is evidenced by increased rates of suicide (Weir, 2019; Hedegaard, 2021; Stone et al., 2018) and psychopathology (Blue Cross Blue Shield Association, 2018; Twenge et al., 2010). Charles Taylor identified, in the same time frame as the noted decline of mental health, a malaise of modernity (1991), that is, the loss of meaning and transcendence in the modern world. Throughout the history of psychology and Western thought and culture, increased rates of psychological distress certainly coincide with what I will refer to …
Latter-Day Saint Women And Leadership In Higher Education: An Intrinsic Case Study, Elizabeth J. Darger
Latter-Day Saint Women And Leadership In Higher Education: An Intrinsic Case Study, Elizabeth J. Darger
Theses and Dissertations
There are few women in the highest levels of leadership in most industries, including higher education. This intrinsic case study provides insight into the leadership journeys of 15 female leaders at Brigham Young University, which is sponsored by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Four prevalent themes emerged about their leadership journeys. First, a leadership role was not part of the participant's life plan. The remaining three themes related to acceptance of a leadership role. Participants reported feeling nudged to consider a leadership role, feeling a sense of relational responsibility in accepting a leadership role, and receiving a …
Effects Of Undergraduate Service Immersion Program On Participants And Mission Integration, Victoria Santangelo
Effects Of Undergraduate Service Immersion Program On Participants And Mission Integration, Victoria Santangelo
Theses and Dissertations
The focus on the transmission of mission in Catholic colleges and universities has heightened over the past decade as there is a recognition of the impact of diminishing numbers of priests and vowed clergy. Nationally, the concern over sponsorship in universities that are sponsored by religious communities has led to a dialogue about the most effective way to transmit mission to subsequent generations of students. It is the perspective of this research that an effective way to transmit mission to the next generation of students, in addition to curricular efforts, is through service immersion programs. In this research, a special …
Accepting The Call And Overcoming The Challenges: Leadership Practices Of African American Clergywomen, Michael J. Harris
Accepting The Call And Overcoming The Challenges: Leadership Practices Of African American Clergywomen, Michael J. Harris
Theses and Dissertations
Clergy leadership is identified as an immensely challenging vocation. This study proposes that challenges African American clergywomen face are exacerbated due to the combination of their ethnicity and gender. Forces such as patriarchy and gender discrimination are explicated in this study and identified as major sources of oppression for African American women in clergy leadership. This study provides historical background by exploring gender arrangements both on the African continent and in the United States, to allow the reader to understand frustrations that African American clergywomen experience as they encounter myriad challenges to emerging and thriving in clergy leadership roles within …
The Development Of A Short Form Of The Clinically Adaptive Multidimensional Outcome Survey, Peter William Sanders
The Development Of A Short Form Of The Clinically Adaptive Multidimensional Outcome Survey, Peter William Sanders
Theses and Dissertations
The Evidence-Based Practice (EBP) movement has gained considerable influence in the healthcare industry, including psychotherapy. The American Psychological Association's (APA) official stance on EBP encouraged clinicians to used standardized outcome measures in routine practice in order to establish the efficacy of their interventions. Routine Outcome Measurement (ROM) systems were designed specifically to accomplish this purpose, and have been shown to improve client outcomes and provide valuable aggregate data that contributes to empirical literature. Despite this research and the endorsement of the APA's official EBP stance, these measures have not been widely adopted by clinicians. Several studies have found that clinicians …
Preserving The Spirit Of African Storytelling In The Pittsburgh Cycle, Elizabeth L. Reeves
Preserving The Spirit Of African Storytelling In The Pittsburgh Cycle, Elizabeth L. Reeves
Theses and Dissertations
This thesis will investigate and examine how August Wilson incorporated African storytelling ceremonials inside of Gem of the Ocean and Joe Turner’s Come and Gone. By studying the mannerisms and characteristics of Aunt Ester (Gem of the Ocean) and Bynum Walker (Joe Turner’s Come and Gone), this paper will help educators to understand that Wilson created these characters to preserve African griots inside his Pittsburgh Cycle. This paper will link how theatre educators in the 21st century can capture the spirit of the African griots. The socially responsible theatre practice is a teaching method that theatre …
Spiritual Pathways To Healing And Recovery: An Intensive Single-N Study Of A Patient With An Eating Disorder, Troy William Lea
Spiritual Pathways To Healing And Recovery: An Intensive Single-N Study Of A Patient With An Eating Disorder, Troy William Lea
Theses and Dissertations
This study presents an in-depth case study of eight sessions of spiritually integrated psychotherapy with a 20-year-old woman recovering from an Eating Disorder. The inclusion and utility of session-to-session outcome data as well as systematic follow up data in conjunction with in-depth qualitative interviews are shown. The therapist and client's perspectives are highlighted over the course of treatment. Three clinical areas of focus (renewing identity, reducing self-contempt, and fostering hope) are extracted from the qualitative interviews and the therapeutic process of weaving them together is highlighted. The Tau-U and SMA single case study statistical analyses are used to highlight clinical …
Initial Development And Validation Of The Clinically Adaptive Multidimensional Outcome Survey, Jason Andrew Mcbride
Initial Development And Validation Of The Clinically Adaptive Multidimensional Outcome Survey, Jason Andrew Mcbride
Theses and Dissertations
There has been a long-standing need in the field of psychotherapy to document progress and show effectiveness. The evidence-based practice (EBP) movement has had considerable influence in the field of psychology as evidenced by the APA task force that adopted the stance of evidence-based practice in psychology (EBPP) to ensure quality and accountability for psychological services as well as the integration of science and practice. One of the primary components of EBPP is the use of routine outcome measures (ROMs), which seek to integrate research with practice while simultaneously documenting progress and enhancing treatment. Despite the wave of ROM in …
Development Of A Multiscale Internal State Variable Inelasticity-Corrosion Damage Model For Magnesium Alloys, Weiwei Song
Development Of A Multiscale Internal State Variable Inelasticity-Corrosion Damage Model For Magnesium Alloys, Weiwei Song
Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation proposes a multiscale Internal State Variable (ISV) inelasticity-corrosion damage model that is motivated by experimental microstructure-property relations of magnesium alloys. The corrosion damage framework was laid out based on observation of different corrosion mechanisms occurred on an extruded AM30 magnesium alloys. The extruded AM30 magnesium alloy was studied under two corrosion environments (cyclical salt spray and immersion) in order to observe the corrosion rates under different exposure environments. The coupons were examined at various times to determine the history effects of three corrosion mechanisms: (1) general corrosion; (2) pitting corrosion in terms of the nucleation rate, growth rate, …
Structure-Property Relations And Modeling Of Small Crack Fatigue Behavior Of Various Magnesium Alloys, J Daniel Bernard
Structure-Property Relations And Modeling Of Small Crack Fatigue Behavior Of Various Magnesium Alloys, J Daniel Bernard
Theses and Dissertations
Lightweight structural components are important to the automotive and aerospace industries so that better fuel economy can be realized. Magnesium alloys in particular are being examined to fulfill this need due to their attractive stiffness- and strength-to-weight ratios when compared to other materials. However, when introducing a material into new roles, one needs to properly characterize its mechanical properties. Fatigue behavior is especially important considering aerospace and automotive component applications. Therefore, quantifying the structure-property relationships and accurately predicting the fatigue behavior for these materials are vital. This study has two purposes. The first is to quantify the structure-property relationships for …
Called To Lead: An Examination Into The Phenomenon Of Calling, Hughie Jackson Barnes
Called To Lead: An Examination Into The Phenomenon Of Calling, Hughie Jackson Barnes
Theses and Dissertations
Perhaps the most widely known episode of a calling is the burning bush experience of Moses, leader of Israel's sojourn to freedom from Egyptian captivity. At present, the phenomenon of being called to a place, vocation, or career has limited social science research. Indeed, prior to the middle of the 21st century this concept was lacking both theoretically and empirically. Any coverage of the subject of a calling was primarily found in religious periodicals and similar publications (Newman, 2006). In 2007, Scott attempted to advance the discourse on career development by examining callings and the corollary meanings which college students …
Themes Of Trauma And Morally Injurious Events Among Vietnam Non-Combat Veterans: A Qualitative Examination Of The Nvvrs, Thomas M. Hanson
Themes Of Trauma And Morally Injurious Events Among Vietnam Non-Combat Veterans: A Qualitative Examination Of The Nvvrs, Thomas M. Hanson
Theses and Dissertations
To broaden our understanding of traumatic events, Litz et al. (2009) introduced moral injury (MI), defined as "perpetrating, failing to prevent, or bearing witness to acts that transgress deeply held moral beliefs and expectations" (pg. 6). While Drescher et al. (2011) interviewed trauma experts to identify types of events that maybe associated with MI, it is unknown if these themes of events are experienced by non-combat veterans (i.e., Vietnam Era Veterans; N=200). Therefore, this qualitative study identifies the themes of traumatic events reported by a random selection of the non-combat subsample within the National Vietnam Veterans Readjustment Study (NVVRS), and …
A Study Of Islamic Leadership Theory And Practice In K-12 Islamic Schools In Michigan, Adnan Ibrahim Aabed
A Study Of Islamic Leadership Theory And Practice In K-12 Islamic Schools In Michigan, Adnan Ibrahim Aabed
Theses and Dissertations
Effective leadership in Islamic schools involves the incorporation of Islamic principles in the leadership behaviors and practices. With so much literature about the need of Islamic leadership in Islamic institutions in the United States, the problem addressed by the study was whether school principals in Islamic schools exhibited and led these schools according to the principles of Islamic leadership. The study described leadership approaches used by school principals in Islamic schools and how those leadership approaches were influenced by Islamic leadership principles, comparing the Islamic leadership principles derived from the literature with the leadership principles of principals of Islamic schools. …
School Psychologists' Perceived Concerns Regarding Crisis Intervention With Diverse Populations, Ana E. Kemple
School Psychologists' Perceived Concerns Regarding Crisis Intervention With Diverse Populations, Ana E. Kemple
Theses and Dissertations
With the ever-increasing diversity among students in the United States, American schools are seeing more of a mismatch between school personnel and students. Service provision has traditionally addressed multicultural competencies in the area of assessment and more recently in counseling procedures. With the increased attention given to school-related crises, the role of school psychologists has expanded to include crisis intervention. The current study will present information on the need for multicultural competencies in crisis intervention and assess the current concerns of nationally certified school psychologists in this area of service provision. Responses from a random sample of school psychologists (n= …
Addressing Mormon Female Communities: Working Towards A Woman's Capacity, Alyssa Snow Larson
Addressing Mormon Female Communities: Working Towards A Woman's Capacity, Alyssa Snow Larson
Theses and Dissertations
This thesis project explores the discourse in Mormon culture addressing Mormon female communities. The discussion is sociological rather than theological and examines the functional characteristics of discourse found in the tradition regarding women. It sets out to review a paradox in the discourse addressing Mormon women that has been documented over time. I examine how this paradox in Mormon discourse establishes and limits women's roles; to do so, I use personal examples and the experience provided by thirteen women whom I interviewed.
The thesis is divided into three main discussions: Community, Discursive Action and Cooperation. My methodology involves a theoretical …

Behind The Veil: The Heavenly Mother Concept Among Members Of Women's Support Groups In The Church Of Jesus Christ Of Latter-Day Saints, Allen W. Litchfield
Behind The Veil: The Heavenly Mother Concept Among Members Of Women's Support Groups In The Church Of Jesus Christ Of Latter-Day Saints, Allen W. Litchfield
Theses and Dissertations
This thesis examines the belief in and use of the concept of Mother in Heaven among some women's support groups comprised of female members (and attached males) of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. The expectations were that those surveyed would express belief in Heavenly Mother, but that the concept would not be a central one. Various propositions suggested relationships between religious dimension, feminism, and alienation variables and belief in and salience of Mother in Heaven. Most of those surveyed believe in the Goddess, but the concept is underutilized among those surveyed. Belief in Mother in Heaven was …
The Godbeite Movement: A Dissent Against Temporal Control, Grant H. Palmer
The Godbeite Movement: A Dissent Against Temporal Control, Grant H. Palmer
Theses and Dissertations
The approach of the transcontinental railroad in 1869 posed several real and imagined threats to the Mormon Kingdom in the Great Basin. The Pacific Railroad ended Mormon geographic isolation and brought economic competition from the States. The railroad also made it possible for miners to get to the gold fields faster and with the heave equipment necessary to make Utah mining profitable. Sensing the political problems and the social and moral evils that would accompany the railroad, the Mormon leaders, in hopes of meeting these problems, counseled to extend their economic goal of self-sufficiency. Through stepped-up cooperation and unity they …
