How Can The Government Utilize Elites & Celebrities To Manage Global Public Opinion On Egypt? An Exploratory Study Of Mo Salah & Egypt, Sara S. Ibrahim
How Can The Government Utilize Elites & Celebrities To Manage Global Public Opinion On Egypt? An Exploratory Study Of Mo Salah & Egypt, Sara S. Ibrahim
Theses and Dissertations
With Egypt’s latest global reputation index, nation brand, and soft power indices scoring low, such rankings have left room for finding new ways of enhancing Egypt’s global public opinion and reputation. This study showcases an untapped potential for enhancing a nation’s reputation and public opinion. This untapped potential lies in the power of elite commentary and celebrity activity. Such commentary and activity influence public opinion of the celebrity but also subsequently affect the public opinion of their country-of-origin nations.
With a global phenomenon such as football player Mo Salah, it has always been suggested that his performance positively affected Egypt's …
African Americans’ Perceptions Of Racial Inequality In Relation To Institutional And Social Trust, Megan Brianna Betts
African Americans’ Perceptions Of Racial Inequality In Relation To Institutional And Social Trust, Megan Brianna Betts
Theses and Dissertations
Much of the research examining institutional and social trust explores the factors that affect these concepts, including race and ethnicity. Such studies involve comparing different racial groups and using race as a discrete independent variable in their analysis. Few researchers have sought to explore social and institutional trust within a single racial group, and when they have, it has only been in White respondents. In addition, few researchers have tied institutional and social trust to understandings of racial inequality. Due to the complex social and historical circumstances of African Americans, I propose there is a pattern in the way Black …
International Conflict, Political Leaders, And Accountability, William Thomas Christiansen
International Conflict, Political Leaders, And Accountability, William Thomas Christiansen
Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation examines the role that an individual leader’s background (e.g. what they did before gaining power) plays in public evaluations of their performance managing international conflicts. I propose a novel theory arguing domestic audience members (e.g. the citizens of a leader’s state paying attention to international conflicts) heuristically analyze the competence of a leader by examining their professional and educational background. Once audience members determine whether a leader is competent, they use these judgments to inform whether a given leader deserves blame or credit for the outcome of a given conflict. I find support for this theory by fielding …
Beyond The Sentimental Cliche: How Local Communities Impact Residents And Shape Public Opinion, Kate Brunk
Beyond The Sentimental Cliche: How Local Communities Impact Residents And Shape Public Opinion, Kate Brunk
Theses and Dissertations
The Trump administration has recently established a rule that will prohibit abortion services providers from receiving Title X funds for the non-abortion family planning services they provide. Little public opinion research has focused on family planning and reproductive health topics outside of abortion. I find statistically significant experimental evidence that increasing perceptions of local need for a local reproductive health clinic caused subjects to be more supportive of federal reproductive health funding for local clinics. I did not find statistically significant correlational evidence that objective measures of poor reproductive health at the county level influence public opinion on federal reproductive …
Empathy Induction To Reduce Victim Blaming In Revenge Porn Cases, Marissa Amber Morris
Empathy Induction To Reduce Victim Blaming In Revenge Porn Cases, Marissa Amber Morris
Theses and Dissertations
Research findings suggest that certain characteristics of victims and perpetrators may make them more likely to be blamed. To this end, the current study examined how victim gender, having a history of infidelity, empathy instructions, and observer gender work together to place blame on victims and perpetrators. Participants read one of eight scenarios that varied the victim’s gender, history of infidelity, and presence of empathy instructions. They then indicated the degree to which various actors were to blame for the occurrence of nonconsensual pornography, as well as their affective reactions toward both the victim and the perpetrator. Overall, affect decreased …
Demographics And Poverty Spending Attitudes In The Mississippi Poll: 2004-2014, William Case Jorgeson
Demographics And Poverty Spending Attitudes In The Mississippi Poll: 2004-2014, William Case Jorgeson
Theses and Dissertations
The plight of the poor has played a role in America’s politics for decades. In the 1930’s, Franklin Roosevelt’s Democratic Party vowed to fight the Great Depression, and by implementing countless anti-poverty initiatives and agencies it won enormous favor with the public and ushered in a period of Democratic dominance. In modern politics, narratives surrounding the poor and programs designed to help them are utilized by Republicans and Democrats to further their party’s agenda. I examine the influence of various demographic factors on the attitudes of Mississippi residents towards spending by the government intended to alleviate poverty, using the Mississippi …
Do Americans’ Perceptions Of The Prevalence Of Prejudice Impact Their Racial Policy Preferences? Investigating Meta-Stereotypes As A Potential Causal Mechanism, Alexandra Reckendorf
Do Americans’ Perceptions Of The Prevalence Of Prejudice Impact Their Racial Policy Preferences? Investigating Meta-Stereotypes As A Potential Causal Mechanism, Alexandra Reckendorf
Theses and Dissertations
Racial discrimination, though more subtle than in the past, is still an enduring presence in 21st century America. Whether looking at education, health care, the workforce, housing/lending practices, or the criminal justice system, studies routinely confirm that racial prejudice and discrimination persist despite claims of a “post-racial” America. Yet, despite the perseverance of racial prejudice and discrimination, policies correcting racial injustice remain contentious, either failing to receive the requisite support to pass reforms or receiving backlash from the public. This project explores meta-stereotypes in the Black and white communities, and highlights meta-stereotypes’ potential impact when determining why some individuals support …
How Much Do Groups Still Matter To Politics? An Examination Of Group Influences On Public Opinion, Lauren E. Smith
How Much Do Groups Still Matter To Politics? An Examination Of Group Influences On Public Opinion, Lauren E. Smith
Theses and Dissertations
Public opinion plays an important role in democracy. A system of government designed specifically to be by the people, for the people and of the people must by necessity listen to the opinions of the people. Accordingly, an important research agenda is determining conditions under which public opinion is listened to and translated into government responsiveness. Most of the public opinion literature answering this question focuses specifically on individual opinion. I argue that this is problematic because politics is ultimately carried out in terms of the collective. Further, I argue that collective opinion is often voiced through groups in society …
Deutsche Opposition : Explanations Of The German Opposition To The 2003 Iraq War, Mark J (Mark Joseph) Ferguson
Deutsche Opposition : Explanations Of The German Opposition To The 2003 Iraq War, Mark J (Mark Joseph) Ferguson
Theses and Dissertations
During 2002 and early 2003 the international debate over Iraq became a major topic throughout the world. The debate became contentious, splitting long standing allies between those who supported the military option against Iraq and those who did not. The United States was at the forefront of the military option movement, while Germany was the leader of the anti-war movement. In Germany massive protests against the war occurred weekly. Many Germans recalled their own history of war to justify their opposition to any military action against Iraq. To compound the issue even further was the fact Germany in the fall …
Modeling Transnational Terrorists' Center Of Gravity: An Elements Of Influence Approach, Cheryl L. Hetherington
Modeling Transnational Terrorists' Center Of Gravity: An Elements Of Influence Approach, Cheryl L. Hetherington
Theses and Dissertations
Since the September 11th terrorist attack, there has been an increased emphasis on understanding and modeling terrorists groups. While several efforts have focused on identifying transnational terrorists' centers of gravity (COGs), most of these efforts have proposed COGs using a traditional nation-state paradigm. In today's "global village", terrorist groups are no longer limited by locality and national boundaries. With the increasing threats from transnational terrorist groups, new paradigms and models are necessary to properly analyze today's, and tomorrow's, conflict. Analysis should be based on the identified and quantified transnational terrorists' COGs and their associated interactions. Unfortunately, not all of the …
Latter-Day Saints In Popular National Periodicals 1970-1981, Adam H. Nielson
Latter-Day Saints In Popular National Periodicals 1970-1981, Adam H. Nielson
Theses and Dissertations
The public image of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is the product of several factors. This thesis investigates that image as presented in national periodicals from 1970 to 1981. During this time "Mormons" and "Mormonism" was a popular topic as the religion gained notoriety, and as an awareness of its peculiar beliefs and practices increased.
The rationale for using national magazines to assess public image is the assumption that they "reflect prevailing points of view" and help "formulate public opinion." Since popular attitudes are one of the factors that influence how the Church is accepted in the …
The Historical Debate Among Leaders Of The Church Of Jesus Christ Of Latter-Day Saints On The Topic Of The United Nations, Katie Marie Lenhard
The Historical Debate Among Leaders Of The Church Of Jesus Christ Of Latter-Day Saints On The Topic Of The United Nations, Katie Marie Lenhard
Theses and Dissertations
Since the inception of the United Nations in 1945, leaders of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints have made public statements regarding the international peace and security organization. To the confusion of many Church members, who often look to their leaders for prophetic guidance on numerous spiritual and temporal topics, these statements have been conflicting. Some Church leaders have clearly opposed the United Nations and others have openly supported it, offering various ideological explanations for their beliefs. Yet, it is evident that The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has never made an official position on the …
Reclaiming A Sacred Domain: An Ethnographic Study Of Mormon Women Overcoming The Media-Supported Message Of Acceptable Birth Practice Through Giving Birth At Home, Celeste Elain Witt
Reclaiming A Sacred Domain: An Ethnographic Study Of Mormon Women Overcoming The Media-Supported Message Of Acceptable Birth Practice Through Giving Birth At Home, Celeste Elain Witt
Theses and Dissertations
This study ethnographically explores the experiences of 30 American Mormon women who chose to give birth at home, a practice which differs from the culturally expected birth practice supported by most media birth scenes. The dominant birth practice among American Mormon women aligns with the biomedical birth system nearly universally practiced in the United States.
Recent research indicates that the biomedical model is supported by most media portrayals of birth (Elson 1997b). Mormon women who had given birth at home with a midwife were located and invited to participate. A semi-structured interview guide was used to frame the research process. …
A System Dynamics Investigation Of Environmental Attitudes And Behaviors Influencing Solid Waste Reduction, Louis E. Lilley
A System Dynamics Investigation Of Environmental Attitudes And Behaviors Influencing Solid Waste Reduction, Louis E. Lilley
Theses and Dissertations
The relationship between attitudes and behavior is investigated in regard to the reduction of solid waste in a community. The theory of reasoned action, as identified by Ajzen and Fishbein in 1975, is investigated using as system dynamics approach. The closed loop system structure that would produce the expected real world response is established. The structure is then translated into a flow diagram and coded into a mathematical model. The model quantifies the values of beliefs, attitudes, intentions, behaviors, external and demographic variables, perceptions, and waste generation levels in order to illustrate how each changes over time when influenced by …
A Study Of African American Women And Their Perceptions Of Life In Utah, Jennifer Caye Demayo
A Study Of African American Women And Their Perceptions Of Life In Utah, Jennifer Caye Demayo
Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to examine, through the use of the ethnographic interview (Spradley, 1979), residential preferences, as well as the stated reasons for relocation of African American women who live in a predominantly White, Utah Mormon culture. The "push and pull" factors that impacted the women's decisions to come to and/or remain in Utah were qualitatively analyzed in some detail. The end goal of the research was to determine whether Utah was perceived as a desirable residence by and for African American women.
Residential preference is a complex issue which requires an in depth explanation. The prominent …
An Analysis Of Attitudes Navajo Community Leaders Have Toward A Religion Sponsored Program Based Upon Membership Of That Faith And Amount Of Information Attained, Howard Rainer
Theses and Dissertations
The problem is to analyze the opinions of the Navajo community leadership towards a religion sponsored program, as related to their exposure to information about the program and to othether social variables. Specifically, this study is concerned with two main questions:
1. Is the reaction among Navajo community leaders towards the LDS Indian Placement Program related to the amount of information they have available about that program?
2. Is the attitudes of Navajo community leaders concerning the Placement Program related to their social economic status of age, religious affiliation, and other such variables?
A Study Of The Attitudes Toward And Understandings Of Temple Marriage Of A Selected Group Of Seminary Students In The Alpine School District (Utah), Jerald Ray Johansen
A Study Of The Attitudes Toward And Understandings Of Temple Marriage Of A Selected Group Of Seminary Students In The Alpine School District (Utah), Jerald Ray Johansen
Theses and Dissertations
The objective of most religious teachings and concepts is to change the student's attitude that desirable behavior may follow. The measurement of attitudes and the way people feel about certain religious concepts are, to an extent, determinative of their behavior. This realization has brought about a steady growth within the educational field of attitude and opinion measurement. It has also influenced religious educators to investigate this field in their efforts to get people to attain desirable religious goals.
The problem, investigated in the present research, was concerned with whether the youth of seminary age in the Church of Jesus Christ …
A Study Of The Religious Attitudes And Concepts Of The People Of Escalante, Utah, From 1876 To 1930, Elwood Byron Allred
A Study Of The Religious Attitudes And Concepts Of The People Of Escalante, Utah, From 1876 To 1930, Elwood Byron Allred
Theses and Dissertations
The problem of this study is to determine the religious attitudes of the people of Escalante, Utah, according to age groups, with an idea of determining whether the opinions which are held by the people are different for various age groups and to determine if possible, the causes for this difference, if there be any.
