This study was conducted at a site adjacent to the I-710 freeway in Long Beach California from March 7 to April 8 of 2012 to evaluate various black carbon and elemental carbon aerosol measurement methods. The measurement of carbonaceous aerosol is a growing field of study because of increasing interest into the climate and health effects of black carbon (BC), and important constituent of atmospheric particular matter (PM). Elemental carbon (EC) and BC are measurements of similar portions of carbon particulate matter, but two measures are operationally defined according to the method used for their detection.

The purpose of this thesis was to conduct a discourse analysis of conversational data from a radio station program in Southern California to see if the speakers' language displays hybridity theory. The radio program in question is unique because all speakers including the deejays and call in listeners do not exclusively speak English or Spanish but codemix or alternate between English and Spanish (Spanglish hereafter) during on-air conversations.

This study examines the religious and spiritual activities that held the most value for older males and females, gender differences in these salient activities, and how elders rank church related activities with the idea of acquiring an understanding of the effects these activities had for the elderly. This study employed an in-person survey that used qualitative and quantitative methods to explore religiosity and spirituality. Participants were representative of the Christian religious and spiritual church congregations of the Inland Empire area, San Bernardino County.

Mobile applications have become ubiquitious with the increase in the popularity and computational power of mobile devices. They can now support rich multimedia user interactions. This project consists of the design and implementaiton of an Android application that renders and animates a three-dimensional model of a human head. The test is synthesized using an Android Text-to-Speech (TTS) engine. The application successfully implements a novel solution for the animated speech synchronization and opens the door for further work in the field of interactive animation. The project can be extended to become an interface for virtual remote communication or animated text messaging.

This study analyzes Carlo Petronio's paper, An Algorithm Producing Hyperbolicity Equations for a Link Complement in S³. Using the figure eight knot as an example, we will explain how Petronio's algorithm was able to decompose the knot complement of an alternating knot into tetrahedra. Then, using the vertex invariants of these tetrahedra, we will explain how Petronio was able to create hyperbolicity equations.

The purpose of this study was to determine if Fischer 344 (F344) rats, a strain which naturally shows deficits in social communication during adolescence, could be used as a model of the social communication deficits observed in autism. Thus, the goal was to determine if F344 rats would also show fewer emissions of isolated-induced ultrasonic vocalizations (an early onset form of social interaction) as compared to SD rats. This study seeks to counter the social narrative that African Americans resist schooling by examining African American post baccalaureate college students that have developed a passion for learning as demonstrated in their persistence and motivations to enter the teaching profession. Racially correlated disparities prevalent in standardized test scores, high school dropout rates and college eligibility remain one of the most pervasive educational dilemmas facing public schools across the nation. Self-efficacy, means-efficacy, and locus of control have been found to affect performance. This study was a 2 x 2 x 2 between groups quasi-experiment, in 2 parts, designed to measure interaction between locus of control, self efficacy, and means-efficacy. Participants were 257 students at California State University, San Bernardino aged 18 through 63 years and about half were Hispanic females.
