Tailoring The Rehabilitative Environment For People With Sensory Overload, Jennifer Cotter
Theses
Sensory overload is a complex sensory processing disorder which can develop post Acquired Brain Injury (ABI). The condition can be extremely debilitating and people who develop it are further hampered by lack of informational resources, sensory overload is currently under researched in the Acquired Brain Injury rehabilitation sector. This qualitative study documents participants first hand experiences of sensory overload post ABI and includes insights and observations from professionals working in the Acquired Brain Injury rehabilitation sector in Ireland. In this study, sensory overload is the focal point and a new rehabilitation tool in the form of a sensory menu is …
Clearing The Clouds: Extracting 3d Information From Amongst The Noise, Alexander Fafard
Clearing The Clouds: Extracting 3d Information From Amongst The Noise, Alexander Fafard
Theses
Advancements permitting the rapid extraction of 3D point clouds from a variety of imaging modalities across the global landscape have provided a vast collection of high fidelity digital surface models. This has created a situation with unprecedented overabundance of 3D observations which greatly outstrips our current capacity to manage and infer actionable information. While years of research have removed some of the manual analysis burden for many tasks, human analysis is still a cornerstone of 3D scene exploitation. This is especially true for complex tasks which necessitate comprehension of scale, texture and contextual learning. In order to ameliorate the interpretation …
Marsbee Preliminary Design Analysis Tool, Hunter Dunne
Marsbee Preliminary Design Analysis Tool, Hunter Dunne
Theses
The Marsbee is a novel bioinspired flapping flight vehicle concept for aerial Martian exploration. The Marsbee design addresses the challenges of flying on Mars by mimicking the unsteady lift generation mechanisms seen in terrestrial insects. To enable the comparison of the Marsbee system to other flying Martian exploration concepts, a systems-based analyzer was created, consisting of several physics-based models. Constraints were used to maintain dynamic similarity between the Marsbee and insects on Earth. The current analyzer only models hovering flight. The functionality of the analyzer was demonstrated by analyzing 2 million randomly generated two-wing and 2 million randomly generated four-wing …
Center For Urban Ecological Dialectics At Mill Street: A Living Building In Geneva, New York, Joseph James Nicholson Iii
Center For Urban Ecological Dialectics At Mill Street: A Living Building In Geneva, New York, Joseph James Nicholson Iii
Theses
Protecting drinking water and emphasizing a need to understand historical watersheds benefits urban ecologies. Geneva, a City in New York State (USA) is to invest in its economic future - especially regarding water for greater public use. To this end, an educational and experiential center in Geneva shall inform the public of a creek’s valuable sub-sources and its own important municipal hydro-geological features. Focusing on the city’s Castle Creek topography, a comprehensive design is developed adjacent to the creek’s urban density combined with a goal towards preservation. Existing watershed education programs, socio-ecological connectivity, and public recreation are the stimuli informing …
Evaluation Of Electrocoagulation For Chloride And Ammonium Removal From The Reject Brine Effluent Pretreated By Solvay Process, Miada Abubaker Ali
Evaluation Of Electrocoagulation For Chloride And Ammonium Removal From The Reject Brine Effluent Pretreated By Solvay Process, Miada Abubaker Ali
Theses
Excessive use of desalination, due to the increase in freshwater demand, results in large productions of reject brine. Therefore, the development of an efficient treatment process of the reject brine becomes vital. The Solvay process is one of the main treatment technologies, wherein NH3 is introduced to convert soluble Na+ into insoluble NaHCO3. However, in this process, Cl- is not removed and NH4+ is introduced, and therefore electrocoagulation has been proposed for their removal. The experiment was designed using Minitab with different initial concentrations of chloride (7400 – 32600 mg/l), current densities (0.033 …
Factors Affecting Terrigenous Sedimentation In Coastal Bays With Coral Reefs: Implications For Monitoring The Effectiveness Of Watershed Restoration, Whitney Sears
Theses
In the Caribbean, sedimentation has been identified as a serious threat to coral reef communities. Although land-based sediment delivery to coastal waters harboring coral reefs occurs under natural conditions, human activities in the watersheds above reefs increases the erosion and delivery of terrigenous sediment to the reefs. Delivery of terrigenous sediment into marine areas below developed watersheds affects sedimentation rates, alters the composition and texture of sediments that are suspended in the water column, and/or sediments that are deposited on the sea floor and on corals.

Imaging Methods For Understanding And Improving Visual Training In The Geosciences, Brandon May
Imaging Methods For Understanding And Improving Visual Training In The Geosciences, Brandon May
Theses
Experience in the field is a critical educational component of every student studying geology. However, it is typically difficult to ensure that every student gets the necessary experience because of monetary and scheduling limitations. Thus, we proposed to create a virtual field trip based off of an existing 10-day field trip to California taken as part of an undergraduate geology course at the University of Rochester. To assess the effectiveness of this approach, we also proposed to analyze the learning and observation processes of both students and experts during the real and virtual field trips. At sites intended for inclusion …
Effect Of Oilfield Brine On Groundwater Quality In Marmul Area, Sultanate Of Oman, Salim Ahmed Sakroon
Effect Of Oilfield Brine On Groundwater Quality In Marmul Area, Sultanate Of Oman, Salim Ahmed Sakroon
Theses
During a period of 28 years, more than 96 million m3 of oilfield produced water was re-injected in the shallow aquifer at Marmul oilfield area, and changed groundwater characteristics. The 10 wells of Shallow Water Disposal (SWD) have been used to inject water in shallow groundwater aquifers of Dammam and Rus formations. The disposal of oilfield produced water to shallow aquifer has been continuing since 1980, with approximately 96 Mm3 of produced water having been disposed and an estimation of approximately 9600 m3 oil has been disposed of in this case until the beginning of 2008.

Land Surface Temperature And Emissivity Retrieval From Thermal Infrared Hyperspectral Imaging, Marvin Boonmee
Land Surface Temperature And Emissivity Retrieval From Thermal Infrared Hyperspectral Imaging, Marvin Boonmee
Theses
A new algorithm, optimized land surface temperature and emissivity retrieval (OLSTER), is presented to compensate for atmospheric effects and retrieve land surface temperature (LST) and emissivity from airborne thermal infrared hyperspectral data. The OLSTER algorithm is designed to retrieve properties of both natural and man-made materials. Multi-directional or multi-temporal observations are not required, and the scenes do not have to be dominated by blackbody features. The OLSTER algorithm consists of a preprocessing step, an iterative search for nearblackbody pixels, and an iterative constrained optimization loop. The preprocessing step provides initial estimates of LST per pixel and the atmospheric parameters of …
The Consolidation Analysis Of A Clay Layer In The City Of Belem Do Para, Brazil, John Bezerra Jr.
The Consolidation Analysis Of A Clay Layer In The City Of Belem Do Para, Brazil, John Bezerra Jr.
Theses
In this study, an analysis was done on a particular clay layer found in the city of Belem do Para, Brazil. Various soil tests were conducted including a consolidation analysis. Data were gathered and analyzed in order to obtain a better understanding of how the soil responds under certain loading conditions. There have been no previous studies done on this material and so when it has been encountered in the field geotechnical engineers provide the safest, but not necessarily best design method possible. In the case of large buildings, piles are driven past this material to competent sand. There have …
Modeling Of A Permeable Reactive Barrier, Guatam C. Ijoor
Modeling Of A Permeable Reactive Barrier, Guatam C. Ijoor
Theses
The focus of the presentstudy was centered on the modeling analysis to support the Permeable Reactive Barrier (PRB) design. The flow model formulated to simulate the Permeable Reactive Barrier System integrated the available geologic, hydro geologic and geo-chemical data from numerous recent installations to simulate a subsurface ground water scenario.
Different generic cases that a PRB system would fall into were identified based on its utility and aquifer conditions and then employed to produce different model adaptations. The different simulation codes and interfaces were evaluated, and the most expedient of them was used to simulate the Model.
The simulations were …
Error Characterization Of The Alpha Residuals Emissivity Extraction Technique, Michael Baglivio
Error Characterization Of The Alpha Residuals Emissivity Extraction Technique, Michael Baglivio
Theses
When dealing with remotely sensed images, a parameter that aids in material identification is its emissivity. By extracting a materials emissivity spectrum, the probability of correctly identifying it greatly increases. The Alpha Residual algorithm was developed for just such a process. The Alpha Residuals emissivity extraction technique was originally developed for six channel Thermal Infrared Multispectral Scanner (TIMS) data. In dealing with TIMS data, it is known that the error at 300K is 1%. In recent years, detector technology has led to sensors with higher spectral resolution and an increased number of bands. The goal of this project is to …
