Palpable, John Archer

Theses

To provoke intrigue using simplified, whimsical, playful (toy-like) forms with recycled materials that convey complex, possibly dark, relationships to foster a curiosity of innocence lost and deliver a deeper meaning (Archer, 2012). To me life is an exercise in exploring the human condition; specifically relationships. From the day we arrive we establish relationships with everything in our world, even before we arrive, if we count the ten months of uterine swimming. The sights, sounds, and touch of lights, voices, and caress all play a part in our connection to the world. My thesis work focuses on the connections among interpersonal …

Evaluation Of Growing Media For Annual Herb Production In Green Roof Modular Trays, Mary Margaret Fischer Aug 2012

Evaluation Of Growing Media For Annual Herb Production In Green Roof Modular Trays, Mary Margaret Fischer

Theses

Extensive urban development has led to the resurgence of green roofs. These vegetated roofs provide significant ecological and economic benefits including mitigation of the urban heat island effect, reduced storm-water runoff, lower energy costs, increased biodiversity, and improved aesthetics, as well as food production and security. Urban agriculture and food security are becoming increasingly important factors of the green roof renaissance. Due to weight load limitations of potential buildings, the ability to produce quality food in shallow media, less than 6.75 cm, could encourage green roof food production. The effectiveness of a commercially available green roof media and a vermicompost …

Human Reliability Analysis In Healthcare: Application Of The Cognitive Reliability And Error Analysis Method (Cream) In A Hospital Setting, Joey Deeter

Theses

Patient safety is a concern within the healthcare domain as it is estimated that tens of thousands of people die annually from preventable medical errors. For over ten years, traditional Human Reliability Analysis (HRA) techniques (e.g., Root Cause Analysis and Failure Mode and Effect Analysis) have been used in hospitals nationwide in an attempt to explain why these errors occur and what can be done to prevent them. Still, patient safety has not improved significantly. Traditional HRA techniques are limited as analysis tools. They do not consider the context in which workers operate. They are also not based on a …

Factors Contributing To The Success Of Commercial Printers, Diana Watkins Jun 2012

Factors Contributing To The Success Of Commercial Printers, Diana Watkins

Theses

Printing had been the uncontested primary media format for over five hundred years--with the commercial printing industry also thriving--until the late 1990s, when abnormal cost patterns and disruptive new media technologies worked together to permanently change the world economy and media landscape. Romano (2010a) estimated that 20% of all print production in the US had disappeared between 1995 and 2010. Many different theories have been posited to commercial printers as to how best to survive, but the overall message has been relatively consistent: print companies cannot rely on economic growth to regain business. Instead, they must adapt to the changing …

Terra Cotta Warrior, Bin Li

Theses

I am kind of worried when I set about writing this paper, since there are too much things to select in this process to talk about and share with you. Filmmaking process is amazing and exciting like magic, and everything needs to be created from nothing like a dove suddenly appears on illusionist's hand. However behind this glaring magic, so many people work deliberately and so many wonderful stories are going on, which are even more dramatic than our film itself. So I even have more enthusiasm to share our story than the story in the film. I want to …

Neural Differentiation Of Pluripotent Stem Cells And Applications To Micropatterned Agarose Hydrogel For Nerve Guidance, Jamila S. Gittens Jan 2012

Neural Differentiation Of Pluripotent Stem Cells And Applications To Micropatterned Agarose Hydrogel For Nerve Guidance, Jamila S. Gittens

Theses

Many central nervous system (CNS) disorders are attributable to damaged oligodendrocytes, the cells that form the myelin sheath of axons. An effective source of human oligodendrocytes is crucial, making pluripotent stem cells, such as embryonic stem (ES) cells, an attractive source for nerve tissue repair and regeneration due to their unlimited capacity for self-renewal and their ability to differentiate into all major cell lineages. Bioengineered 3-D hydrogel culture systems have the potential to elucidate mechanisms required for regeneration of CNS cells. The goals of this study are: (1) to investigate the effects of retinoic acid (RA), sonic hedgehog (shh) agonist, …

Theses

This thesis highlights the contributions to the abolitionist movement of three extremely courageous African American Women: Maria W. Stewart, Sojourner Truth, and Frances Ellen Watkins Harper. Though often faced with ridicule and opposition from audiences when they approached the public platform, these important historical figures rejected the narrow and hypocritical views of a woman’s place, and particularly a black woman’s place in antebellum society and demanded that their voices be heard. They realized that rhetoric is the foundation upon which the struggle for freedom rests and that to engage in rational discourse, whether to teach, preach or lecture was as …
