Website owner identification aims to link websites to their real-world owners, which is crucial for credibility assessment and information provenance in information retrieval and vital for applications in cybersecurity, Internet governance, and digital regulation. Existing approaches for website owner identification primarily rely on querying infrastructure registration records or analyzing webpage content. However, these methods often fail due to incomplete or outdated registration records and sparse webpage content. We observe that inter-website relationships, derived from shared infrastructure data such as primary domains, IP blocks, and geolocations, can provide valuable but underutilized ownership cues. To exploit this insight, we propose MetaRAG, a …

Stprompt++: Prompting Vision-Language Models For Weakly Supervised Video Anomaly Detection And Fine-Grained Localization, Peng Wu, Chengyu Pan, Guansong Pang, Xiangteng He, Zhiwei Yang, Peng Wang, Yanning Zhang
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Traditional weakly supervised video anomaly detection (WSVAD) tasks typically rely on coarse-grained frame-level labels for training. Although this approach reduces annotation costs, it results in weak semantic understanding and spatial localization capabilities due to the absence of fine-grained annotations, hindering precise pixel-level anomaly detection and localization. Thanks to the success of vision-language models (VLMs), e.g., CLIP, recent approaches leveraging large VLMs focus on exploiting their strong semantic understanding capabilities, but they typically feed only keyframes or short video segments into the models, without supplying sufficient prior contextual information (e.g., contextual frames around anomalies, zoomed-in anomaly regions, and detailed anomaly descriptions), …

With the advancement of AI models, more software systems are adopting AI as a component to facilitate automation. Pre-trained models (PTMs) have become a cornerstone of AI-based software, allowing for rapid integration and development with lower training cost. However, their adoption also introduces failure modes such as data leakage and biased outputs, that may require careful handling by downstream developers. While previous research has proposed taxonomies of these technical concerns and various mitigation strategies, how downstream developers address these issues during the development of general AI-based software when reusing PTMs remains unexplored. Understanding downstream developers’ perspectives is essential because they …

Logupdater: Automated Detection And Repair Of Specific Defects In Logging Statements, Renyi Zhong, Yichen Li, Jinxi Kuang, Wenwei Gu, Yintong Huo, Michael R. Lyu
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Developers write logging statements to monitor software runtime behaviors and system state. However, poorly constructed or misleading log messages can inadvertently obfuscate actual program execution patterns, thereby impeding effective software maintenance. Existing research on analyzing issues within logging statements is limited, primarily focusing on detecting a singular type of defect and relying on manual intervention for fixes rather than automated solutions. To address the limitation, we initiate a systematic study that pinpoints four specific types of defects in logging statements (i.e., statement code inconsistency, static dynamic inconsistency, temporal relation inconsistency, and readability issues) through the analysis of real-world log-centric changes. We …

Generalizing Unsupervised Lidar Motion Estimation Via Patch-Aware Feature Reweighting Under Snowy Conditions, Beibei Zhou, Zhiyuan Zhang, Zhenbo Song, Jianhui Guo, Tongpo Zhang, Shaojing Song, Qinge Wu, Hui Kong
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Unsupervised LiDAR motion estimation has attracted significant attention in pattern recognition and robotic vision. However, ensuring robust performance under adverse conditions — particularly structured noise like heavy snowfall — remains a challenging problem. Existing models struggle with domain generalization due to the sensitivity of feature extractors to spatial outliers, limiting their reliability in complex real-world scenarios. In this work, we present an unsupervised LiDAR motion estimation framework via patch-aware feature reweighting to mitigate the domain shift between clear and snowy conditions. Our approach prioritizes reliability-aware reweighting to reduce the influence of snowflake noise and outlier points on pose estimation, while …

Understanding The Out-Of-Distribution Generalization Of Chain-Of-Thought Reasoning In Llms, Nuojing Liang, Xiaotong Yuan, Pan Zhou
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Chain-of-Thought (CoT) reasoning substantially improves Large Language Models (LLMs), yet its out-of-distribution (OOD) generalization mechanism remains theoretically underexplored. We study CoT as compositional OOD generalization: the target task lacks complete reasoning trajectories or direct input-output pairs, while training provides only in-distribution (ID) atomic step data. We show that CoT generalizes by repeatedly applying a shared single-step predictor to compose reusable ID transitions. Theoretically, the OOD task risk is controlled by the sum of ID subtask risks, scaled by a depth-independent hard-decoding coefficient Bℓ b = O(k) that is independent of the reasoning depth T. A Rademachercomplexity analysis further gives an …

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Purpose – We investigate the effect of solvers’ adoption of Generative AI (GenAI) on their popularity in a supply-driven crowdsourcing platform. We also examine the impact of price signals as well as their heterogeneous impact based on the solvers’ membership duration on the platform. Design/methodology/approach – Our analysis focuses on solvers who adopt GenAI for design-related gigs on the supply-driven crowdsourcing platform. By combining propensity score matching (PSM) with multi-period difference-in-differences (DID), we examine how GenAI adoption impacts solvers’ popularity and how price signals affect this main effect. Findings – Our findings reveal that solvers who adopt GenAI tend to …

From Post-Hoc To Pre-Assessment Evaluation: Llms As Collaborative Partners For Simulating Student Performance, Siaw Ling Lo, Ping Fan Ke, Yi Meng Lau
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Ensuring the quality of multiple-choice questions (MCQs) remains a complex challenge in higher education, as traditional post-hoc psychometric analyses often identify flaws only after students have been negatively impacted. While Large Language Models (LLMs) offer potential for simulating student performance to validate items before delivery, they are frequently hindered by a “high-accuracy bias” that prevents larger models from realistically mimicking student errors. This paper proposes the Triadic Pedagogical Fit (TPF) framework, which triangulates Model Scale, Task Complexity via Revised Bloom’s Taxonomy, and Instructional Persona to optimize pre-assessment evaluation. Through two studies, we demonstrate that while Mid-scale (12B) models effectively mirror …

Defense-To-Attack: Bypassing Weak Defenses Enables Stronger Jailbreaks In Vision-Language Models, Yunhan Zhao, Xiang Zheng, Yige Li, Xingjun Ma
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Despite their superb capabilities, Vision-Language Models (VLMs) have been shown to be vulnerable to jailbreak attacks. While recent jailbreaks have achieved notable progress, their effectiveness and efficiency can still be improved. In this work, we reveal an interesting phenomenon: incorporating weak defense cues into the attack pipeline can significantly enhance both the effectiveness and efficiency of jailbreaks on VLMs. Building on this insight, we propose Defense2Attack, a novel jailbreak method that bypasses the safety guardrails of VLMs by leveraging defensive patterns to guide jailbreak prompt construction. Specifically, Defense2Attack consists of three key components: (1) a visual optimizer that embeds universal …

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
We present a replicable data-mining pipeline for illustrative, scenario-conditioned corporate distress analysis under feature decoupling. The pipeline links Compustat financial statements with Sustainalytics ESG Risk Rating records for 2,144 U.S. non-financial public firms, constructs a standardized Transition Risk Index (TRI), estimates a contemporaneous accounting-distress classifier, and applies transparent transition-cost sensitivities. Distress is defined as annual operating income insufficient to cover annual interest expense; interest coverage itself is excluded from the predictors. The resulting model is not a forward default forecast or a regulatory probability-of-default model. On a held-out cross-sectional test set, the logistic specification obtains AUC 0.909, PR-AUC 0.822, and …

Spatial intelligence, which refers to the ability to reason about geometric and physical structure from visual observations, remains a core challenge for multimodal large language models. Despite promising performance, recent multimodal large language models (MLLMs) often exhibit fragile reasoning traces in spatial intelligence tasks that involve consistent spatial state recognition. We argue that these failures stem from a mismatch between the spatial recognition mechanism and the text-only reasoning behavior of these MLLMs. Effective spatial reasoning requires low-level geometric structure to be faithfully preserved and updated throughout the reasoning process, whereas textual representations tend to abstract away precisely these critical details. …

Mg-Fuzz: Model-Guided Fuzzing For Unsafe Scenario Discovery In Autonomous Driving Systems, Yulong Lyu, Ruiqi Hong, Jiawan Wang, Jun Sun, Lei Bu
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
As autonomous driving systems (ADS) are increasingly deployed in real-world environments, discovering diverse unsafe driving scenarios remains a fundamental yet difficult problem. Existing scenario generation and testing approaches often rely on black-box exploration or externally-observed heuristic feedback, which struggle to effectively guide the search toward high-risk scenarios induced by complex decision-making behaviors. A key difficulty stems from the fact that unsafe behaviors in ADS often arise from internal decision-making logic, which can induce structured and discontinuous responses that are hard to effectively explore using purely black-box guidance. Consequently, current tools tend to repeatedly discover a narrow set of similar unsafe …

Educators are increasingly adopting large language models such as ChatGPT to generate multiple-choice questions (MCQs), yet empirical evidence on the quality of these items in computing education assessments remains limited. This study compares 30 ChatGPT-generated and 30 manually crafted items from an undergraduate software design course, and evaluates item difficulty, discrimination, and distractor quality using Classical Test Theory. We triangulated two evaluations using within-subjects and between-subjects designs. Our quantitative findings show that all three metrics in both evaluations point in the same direction. ChatGPT-generated items are easier, less discriminating, and exhibit poorer distractor quality than manually crafted items. Distractor quality …

Facevalue: Exploring Real-Time Self-View Overlays To Prompt Meaning-Oriented Self-Awareness In Remote Meetings, Gun Woo (Warren) Park, Anthony Tang, Fanny Chevalier
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
In remote video meetings, visual non-verbal cues, such as facial expressions or head movements, are seen continuously but often only partially. This increases ambiguity compared to in-person settings and can cause misinterpretation or misalignment between intended and perceived meaning. Motivated by communication theories, we designed FaceValue, a technology probe that augments the self-view with private, real-time overlays. These overlays are subtle, suggestive prompts intended to help attendees reflect on how their cues might be interpreted by others. To invite personal interpretation, FaceValue avoids behavioral labeling and instead aims to support meaning-oriented self-awareness: recognizing when visible cues may unintentionally (mis)communicate intent. …
Generalized Logit Adjustment: Improved Fine-Tuning By Mitigating Label Bias In Zero-Shot Vision Models, Beier Zhu, Qianru Sun, Xun Yang, Hanwang Zhang
Generalized Logit Adjustment: Improved Fine-Tuning By Mitigating Label Bias In Zero-Shot Vision Models, Beier Zhu, Qianru Sun, Xun Yang, Hanwang Zhang
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Foundation models like CLIP allow zero-shot transfer on various tasks without additional training data. Yet, the zero-shot performance is less competitive than a fully supervised one. Thus, fine-tuning and ensembling are also commonly adopted to better fit the downstream tasks. However, we argue that such prior work has overlooked the inherent biases in foundation models. Due to the highly imbalanced Web-scale training set, foundation models are inevitably skewed toward frequent semantics, and thus the subsequent fine-tuning or ensembling is still biased. In this study, we systematically examine the biases in foundation models and demonstrate the efficacy of our proposed Generalized …

Prune: A Patching Based Repair Framework For Certifiable And Privacy-Robust Unlearning Of Neural Networks, Xuran Li, Jingyi Wang, Xiaohan Yuan, Peixin Zhang
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Machine unlearning has emerged as a key mechanism for enabling the “right to be forgotten” in neural network models, allowing the selective removal of specific training data upon request. Existing approaches typically rely on retraining models with the remaining data, which is computationally expensive and difficult to verify, especially when deployed models are distributed or resource-constrained. To address this challenge, our prior conference work introduced PRUNE, a patching-based framework that formulates unlearning as a neural network repair problem. PRUNE achieves targeted forgetting by learning lightweight patch networks that redirect model predictions on the data to be unlearned while preserving performance …

Flow, an optimal experience characterized by deep immersion and engagement in an activity, has been extensively studied in behavioral research. However, its neural dynamic mechanism remains poorly understood. In a within-subject video gaming experiment, we captured neural activity underlying flow, boredom, and anxiety using a 64-channel electroencephalogram (EEG) system. Compared to boredom and anxiety, flow exhibits the highest global functional connectivity, metastability, and dimensionality of dynamic functional connectivity patterns, suggesting that flow is a highly adaptable process that is supported by high-dimensional neural dynamics. Unlike previous studies that focused on identifying static or localized brain activity, we examine the neural …

Llm-As-A-Judge For Software Engineering: Literature Review, Vision, And The Road Ahead, Junda He, Jieke Shi, Terry Yue Zhuo, Christoph Treude, Jiamou Sun, Zhenchang Xing, Xiaoning Du, David Lo
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
The rapid integration of Large Language Models (LLMs) into software engineering (SE) has revolutionized tasks from code generation to program repair, producing a massive volume of software artifacts. This surge in automated creation has exposed a critical bottleneck: the lack of scalable and reliable methods to evaluate the quality of these outputs. Human evaluation, while effective, is very costly and time-consuming. Traditional automated metrics like BLEU rely on high-quality references and struggle to capture nuanced aspects of software quality, such as readability and usefulness. In response, the LLM-as-a-Judge paradigm, which employs LLMs for automated evaluation, has emerged. This approach leverages …

Efficient Test-Time Retrieval Augmented Generation, Hailong Yin, Bin Zhu, Jingjing Chen, Chong-Wah Ngo
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Although Large Language Models (LLMs) demonstrate significant capabilities, their reliance on parametric knowledge often leads to inaccuracies. Retrieval Augmented Generation (RAG) mitigates this by incorporating external knowledge, but these methods may introduce irrelevant retrieved documents, leading to inaccurate responses. While the integration methods filter out incorrect answers from multiple responses, but lack external knowledge like RAG methods, and their high costs require balancing overhead with performance gains. To address these issues, we propose an Efficient Test-Time Retrieval-Augmented Generation Framework named ET2RAG to improve the performance of LLMs while maintaining efficiency. Specifically, ET2RAG is a training-free method, that first retrieves the …

Continuous Query For Top-K Maximal Sum Intervals Over Streaming Data, Zhongshuai Zhang, Xiaochun Yang, Baihua Zheng, Rui Zhu, Haomin Li, Bin Wang
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
The continuous identification of top-k maximal sum intervals using a sliding window over a data stream is a critical operation for applications in IoT and beyond. A maximal sum interval is a non-overlapping, contiguous subsequence with the maximal sum in a sequence of signed values. Existing algorithms are ill-suited for streaming contexts: they either exhaustively enumerate all intervals even for small k values, or depend on indexes that require frequent and costly restructuring. We propose a novel partition-based strategy. Our core insight is a partitioning scheme that guarantees that any maximal sum interval is fully contained within a single partition, …
Success Of New Ideas In Online Platforms: An Idea Network Perspective, Yimei Zhou, Qian Tang, Vincent Z.W. Mack Mack, Shao Yi Liaw
Success Of New Ideas In Online Platforms: An Idea Network Perspective, Yimei Zhou, Qian Tang, Vincent Z.W. Mack Mack, Shao Yi Liaw
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
On online platforms, new ideas often emerge by recombining existing ones within idea networks. Unlike traditional knowledge networks, idea networks represent curated, meaning-based associations among ideas, offering a distinct lens on recombination. Drawing upon a hypergraph perspective, we investigate how new idea success depends on their structural and content attributes, and how collaborative participation shapes these attributes. Using data from an ideation platform, we find that both structural embeddedness and bridging benefit new idea success. Content diversity has no direct effect, but it amplifies the benefits of bridging while constraining those of embeddedness. Both crowd contributions and ideator expertise strengthen …

Parameterized Approximation Schemes For Fair Clustering In Doubling Metrics, Xiaoliang Wu, Ting Liang, Zhize Li, Qilong Feng
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Fair clustering has garnered considerable attention, with various fairness notions proposed to ensure equitable representation across demographic groups. In this paper, we focus on the k-center problem in bounded doubling metrics under two popular fairness requirements: group fairness and data summarization fairness, referred to Group Fair k-Center (Gf-k-Cen) and Data Summarization Fair k-Center (Dsf-k-Cen), respectively. Both fairness notions extend classical clustering formulation by associating each data point with a demographic label. Motivated by recent advances in parameterized approximation results for fair clustering, we investigate whether these problems admit Fixed-Parameter Tractable (FPT) approximation schemes in bounded doubling metrics. The previous algorithms …

Llm-Based Early Rumor Detection With Imitation Agent, Fengzhu Zeng, Qian Shao, Ling Cheng, Wei Gao, Shih-Fen Cheng, Jing Ma, Cheng Niu
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Early Rumor Detection (EARD) aims to identify the earliest point at which a claim can be accurately classified based on a sequence of social media posts. This is especially challenging in data-scarce settings. While Large Language Models (LLMs) perform well in few-shot NLP tasks, they are not well-suited for time-series data and are computationally expensive for both training and inference. In this work, we propose a novel EARD framework that combines an autonomous agent and an LLM-based detection model, where the agent acts as a reliable decision-maker for \textit{early time point determination}, while the LLM serves as a powerful \textit{rumor …

Hvi-Cidnet+: Beyond Extreme Darkness For Low-Light Image Enhancement, Kangbiao Shi, Xiaowen Ma, Yixu Feng, Tao Hu, Peng Wu, Guansong Pang, Qingsen Yan
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Low-Light Image Enhancement (LLIE) aims to recover visually pleasing content and details from degraded low-light images. However, existing RGB-based methods often suffer from color bias and brightness artifacts due to inherent high color sensitivity. Although the HSV color space can decouple brightness and color, it introduces noticeable red and black noise artifacts. To address these challenges, we adopt the Horizontal/Vertical-Intensity (HVI) color space for LLIE, which is defined by the HV color map and learnable intensity. The former enforces small distances for red coordinates to alleviate red noise artifacts, while the latter adaptively compresses low-light regions to suppress black noise …

Task-Aligned Haze Removal With Semantic-Aware Fusion And Contrast Self-Correction, Jinbin Wang, Aiping Yang, Guosong Jiang, Wenlong Yu, Dongwei Ren, Qinghua Hu
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Adverse haze conditions introduce complex degradations that obscure scene details and distort structural cues critical for object detection, posing persistent challenges for vision‐based sensing systems. Although existing haze removal methods have achieved notable improvements in visual clarity, their optimisation objectives are often misaligned with downstream detection requirements, leading to limited detection performance in real‐world scenarios. To address this issue, this work proposes a task‐aligned weakly supervised haze removal framework, termed Dehaze4Detection, which explicitly aligns low‐level restoration with high‐level detection objectives. The framework incorporates a Semantic‐Aware Multi‐Scale Fusion Module (SMFM) that embeds pixel‐level semantic knowledge into the dehazing process, enabling selective …

A Deep Reinforcement Learning Framework For Dynamic Order And Rack Scheduling In Robotic Mobile Fulfillment Systems, Lingjun Wang, Bayi Cheng, Zhiguang Cao, Aldy Gunawan
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Robotic mobile fulfillment systems play a vital role in modern e-commerce, but their efficiencydepends on overcoming a critical challenge: coordinating orders and racks effectively under dynamicorder arrivals, diverse delivery deadlines, and resource sharing among multiple stations. This papertackles the resulting dynamic order and rack scheduling problem and proposes an intelligentscheduling framework centred on deep reinforcement learning. At its core is TriNet-PPO, whichtrains a scheduling policy using TriNet, a tripartite graph neural network encoder tailored to capturethe many-to-many relationships among orders, racks, and items. Furthermore, we introduce IPCSA,an integer programming-based cooperative scheduling algorithm that maps station-level actionpreferences to conflict-free joint decisions …

Searchable encryption enables writers to upload encrypted data to an untrusted cloud server, while allowing authorized readers to perform keyword searches over the encrypted content without compromising data privacy. The multi writer/multi-reader (M/M) setting better reflects real-world de ployment requirements because it aligns with the collaborative nature of many modern applications, but introduces substantial challenges in both efficiency and security. The state-of-the art scheme, delegatable searchable encryption (DSE), achieves optimal search time and forward privacy in the M/M setting. Nevertheless, DSE provides only limited security guarantees: search tokens generated by readers reveal the update count of queried keywords, and the …

Large language models (LLMs) have significantly enhanced the usability of AI-generated code, providing effective assistance to programmers. This advancement also raises ethical and legal concerns, such as academic dishonesty and the generation of malicious code. For accountability, it is imperative to detect whether a piece of code is AI-generated. Watermarking is broadly considered a promising solution and has been successfully applied to identify LLM-generated text. However, existing efforts on code are far from ideal, suffering from limited universality and excessive time and memory consumption. In this work, we propose a plugand- play watermarking approach for AI-generated code detection, named ACW …
