Wave-Modified Mean Exothermic Heating In The Mesopause Region, Michael P. Hickey Ph.D., R. L. Walterscheid Nov 1994

Wave-Modified Mean Exothermic Heating In The Mesopause Region, Michael P. Hickey Ph.D., R. L. Walterscheid

Publications

We employ a model of wave-driven OH nightglow fluctuations to calculate the effects of gravity waves on the chemical exothermic heating due to reactions involving odd hydrogen and odd oxygen species in the mesopause region. Using a model based on time means and deviations from those means, it is demonstrated that gravity waves contribute to the time-average exothermic heating. The effect can be significant because the fractional fluctuations in minor species density can be substantially greater than the fractional fluctuation of the major gas density. Our calculations reveal that the waves mitigate the exothermic heating, demonstrating their potential importance in …

Social Conditions Of Nebraska's Elderly, F. C. Powell, James A. Thorsen Oct 1994

Social Conditions Of Nebraska's Elderly, F. C. Powell, James A. Thorsen

Publications

In 1991, the authors conducted a study of 500 older Nebraskans, comparing 300 people in Omaha and its surrounding counties with a sample of 200 who lived in the very rural Sandhills counties. The purpose of that study was to compare health and health care experience and satisfaction between urban and rural-dwelling elders. Random samples of older people were identified and interviewed by trained telephone operators; each interview took about a half hour. People were asked about their experiences with health and illness, the distance to their primary source of medical care and the distance to the hospital they use, …

A Rab4-Like Gtpase In Dictyostelium Discoideum Colocalizes With V-H(+)-Atpases In Reticular Membranes Of The Contractile Vacuole Complex And In Lysosomes, John Bush, Kathleen Nolta, Juan Rodriguez-Paris, Nancy Kaufmann, Theresa O'Halloran, Tracy Ruscetti, Lesly A. Temesvari, Theodore Steck, James Cardelli

Publications

In the course of screening a cDNA library for ras-related Dictyostelium discoideum genes, we cloned a 0.7 kb cDNA (rabD) encoding a putative protein that was 70% identical at the amino acid level to human Rab4. Rab4 is a small M(r) GTPase, which belongs to the Ras superfamily and functions to regulate endocytosis in mammalian cells. Southern blot analysis indicated that the rabD cDNA was encoded by a single copy gene while Northern blot analysis revealed that the rabD gene was expressed at relatively constant levels during growth and differentiation. Affinity-purified antibodies were prepared against a RabD fusion protein expressed …

Characterization Of Lysosomal Membrane Proteins Of Dictyostelium Discoideum, Lesly A. Temesvari, Juan Rodriguez-Paris, John Bush, Theodore L. Steck, James Caradelli

Publications

Highly purified lysosomes, prepared by magnetic fractionation of homogenates from Dictyostelium discoideum cells fed colloidal iron, were lysed under hypoosmotic conditions, and the membrane-associated proteins were subjected to gel electrophoresis. Thirteen major membrane polypeptides, ranging in molecular weight from 25,000 to 100,000 were identified. The isoelectric points of these proteins ranged from below 3.8 to greater than 7.0. Most of these proteins were stripped from membranes exposed to a chaotropic agent, 3,5-diodo-2-hydroxybenzoic acid lithium salt, and were therefore classified as peripheral membrane proteins. Twenty five glycoprotein species were detected by lectin blot analysis; 19 were classified as integral membrane proteins, …

Simulations Of The Effects Of Water Vapor, Cloud Liquid Water, And Ice On Amsu Moisture Channel Brightness Temperatures, Bradley M. Muller, Henry E. Fuelberg, Xuwu Xiang

Publications

Radiative transfer simulations are performed to determine how water vapor and nonprecipitating cloud liquid water and ice particles within typical midlatitude atmospheres affect brightness temperatures T-B's of moisture sounding channels used in the Advanced Microwave Sounding Unit (AMSU) and AMSU-like instruments. The purpose is to promote a general understanding of passive top-of-atmosphere T-B's for window frequencies at 23.8, 89.0, and 157.0 GHz, and water vapor frequencies at 176.31, 180.31, and 182.31 GHz by documenting specific examples. This is accomplished through detailed analyses of T-B's for idealized atmospheres, mostly representing temperate conditions over land. Cloud effects are considered in terms of …

Automated Classification Of Stellar Spectra - I. Initial Results With Artificial Neural Networks, Ted Von Hippel, L.J. Storrie-Lombardi, M.C. Storrie-Lombardi, M.J. Irwin

Publications

We have initiated a project to classify stellar spectra automatically from high-dispersion objective prism plates. The automated technique presented here is a simple back propagation neural network and is based on the visual classification work of Houk. The plate material (Houk’s) is currently being digitized, and contains « 105 stars down to K æ 11 at æ 2-Â resolution from « 3850 to 5150 Â. For this first paper in the series, we report on the results of 575 stars digitized from 6 plates. We find that even with the limited data set now in hand we can determine the …

Population Structure And Spatial Pattern In The Dioecious Shrub Ceratiola Ericoides, David J. Gibson, Eric S. Menges Jun 1994

Population Structure And Spatial Pattern In The Dioecious Shrub Ceratiola Ericoides, David J. Gibson, Eric S. Menges

Publications

The dioecious shrub Ceratiola ericoides (Florida rosemary) dominates xeric, infrequently burned Florida scrub vegetation, often to the near-exclusion of other woody species. We studied the spatial pattern, age, sex and size structure of four populations in Florida, USA: two coastal scrub populations subject to recurrent local disturbances due to sand movement, and two inland scrub populations in sites periodically burned by stand-replacing fires. The age structure of individual genets was estimated from node counts and used to describe the age structure of the populations. The sex ratio of males to females was not significantly different from 1:1, except within a …

Occasional Paper No. 094-1: Improving Nebraska's Job Statistics: Learning From The Annual Revision To Nebraska's 1991 Employment Figures, E. David Fifer

Publications

Nebraska looked to be one of the leading states in the nation, if not the leading state, in job growth during much of 1991. Each month, reports of Nebraska's continued job growth made it appear that the state had somehow managed to escape the national recession.

Nebraska's apparent economic vitality caught the attention of the national media. The Wall Street Journal, citing Arizona State University, noted that "Nebraska increased non-farm employment at a faster pace than any state during March and April. ... From January through April, the state added 34,000 non-farm jobs-a 4.8 percent increase over the same period …

California Comparative Risk Project (1994). Toward The 21st Century: Planning For The Protection Of California's Environment, Alan Ramo May 1994

California Comparative Risk Project (1994). Toward The 21st Century: Planning For The Protection Of California's Environment, Alan Ramo

Publications

Participants in the California Comparative Risk Project were charged with identifying environmental threats of the greatest ecological, human health, and societal concern using the risk ranking model. However, agreeing that risk is not the only factor that should be considered, our project also examined how economics, pollution prevention, environmental justice, education, and public participation contribute to environmental decision-making. The unique inclusion of this aspect in our project was in response to a growing debate nationally and in California about the limitations of a risk-ranking model for setting environmental priorities. The findings and recommendations of the California Comparative Risk Project are …

New Sources For The Hot Oxygen Geocorona, P. G. Richards, Michael P. Hickey Ph.D., D. G. Torr

Publications

This paper investigates new sources of thermospheric non thermal (hot) oxygen due to exothermic reactions involving numerous minor (ion and neutral) and metastable species. Numerical calculations are performed for low latitude, daytime, winter conditions, with moderately high solar activity and low magnetic activity. Under these conditions we find that the quenching of metastable species are a significant source of hot oxygen, with kinetic energy production rates a factor of ten higher than those due to previously considered O2+ and NO+ dissociative recombination reactions. Some of the most significant new sources of hot oxygen are reactions involving quenching of O+(²D), O(¹D), …

Ceraclea Enodis, A New Species Of Sponge-Feeding Caddisfly (Trichoptera:Leptoceridae) Previously Misidentified, H Nicole Whitlock, John C. Morse

Publications

A new species of Trichoptera, Ceraclea (C.) enodis, of the Ceraclea (C.) senilis Group, was discovered in freshwater sponge in the Little River in Montgomery County, North Carolina. Illustrations and descriptions of the male, female, larva, pupa, and larval case are given. Adults resemble those C. cancellata (Betten), the mature larva looks like that of C. maculata (Banks), the younger larva may be confused with C. transverasa (Hagen), and the pupa has anal rods rather like those of C. spngillovorax (Resh); but all life history forms can be distinguished reliably from these species by consistent morphological characters and the sponge …

Upon Closer Inspection...U.S. Naval Aviation Mishaps 1977-1992, Scott A. Shappell, Douglas A. Wiegmann

Publications

The U.S. Navy/Marine Corps Class A flight/flight-related mishap rate has declined markedly since 1953. However, analysis of all Class A, B, and C naval aviation mishaps between January 1977 and December 1992 reveals that mishaps attributable to human factors have declined at a slower rate than those attributable to mechanical/environmental factors. Upon closer inspection of the data, marked differences were evident between single-piloted and dual-piloted aircraft. Global trends were primarily a function of single-piloted aircraft, particularly when phase of flight and time of day that a mishap occurred are considered. Previously reported improvement in aviation safety may be biased by …

Tyrosine As A Countermeasure To Performance Decrement During Sleep Loss, Douglas A. Wiegmann, David F. Neri, Robert R. Stanny, Scott Shappell, Andrew M. Mccardie, David L. Mckay

Publications

The fatigue and cognitive performance deficits associated with sleep loss and stress have motivated the search for effective nonpharmacological countermeasures. The purpose of the present study was to examine the potential behavioral effects of tyrosine, an amino-acid presursor to dopamine and norepinephrine, during an episode of continuous nighttime work involving one night of sleep loss.

Comparison Of Theories For Gravity Wave Induced Fluctuations In Airglow Emissions, R. L. Walterscheid, G. Schubert, Michael P. Hickey Ph.D. Mar 1994

Comparison Of Theories For Gravity Wave Induced Fluctuations In Airglow Emissions, R. L. Walterscheid, G. Schubert, Michael P. Hickey Ph.D.

Publications

A comparison is undertaken of theories for the gravity wave induced fluctuations in the intensity of airglow emissions and the associated temperature of the source region. The comparison is made in terms of Krassovsky's ratio ηE for a vertically extended emission region (ηE is the ratio of the vertically integrated normalized intensity perturbation to the vertically integrated normalized intensity-weighted temperature perturbation). It is shown that the formulas for ηE in the works by Tarasick and Hines (1990) and Schubert et al. (1991) are in agreement for the case of an inviscid atmosphere. The calculation of ηE using the theory of …

Publications

The γ-ray burst brightness distribution in inhomogeneous and the distribution on the sky is nearly isotropic. These features argue against an association with γ-ray bursts with those Galactic objects that are known to exhibit a strong concentration toward the Galactic center or plane. The observed statistical properties indicate a cosmological origin. Circumstantial evidence suggests that neutron stars are involved in the burst phenomenon. HEre we consdier Population II neutron stars in an extended Galatic Halo (EGH) as an alternative to cosmological scenaries. The BATSE data indicate a small deviation from isotropy near the 2 σ level of statistical significance. If …

Russia's Wild East: Ecological Deterioration And The Rule Of Law In Siberia, Paul Stanton Kibel Jan 1994

Russia's Wild East: Ecological Deterioration And The Rule Of Law In Siberia, Paul Stanton Kibel

Publications

Although there are now greater environmental protections on the Russian law books, these protections have so far done little to improve ecological conditions in Siberia. This article examines how the dramatic political and legal changes in Russia have affected Siberian nature conservation and environmental protection. More specifically, it seeks to explain why, despite the significant restructuring of political power and the increasingly open discussion of ecological issues, the Siberian environment continues to deteriorate. The article begins with an analysis of existing ecological and economic conditions in Siberia. It then considers how the legal legacy of the USSR has hindered recent …

Strategies For Environmental Justice: Rethinking Cercla Medical Monitoring Lawsuits, Colin Crawford

Publications

This Article argues that by concentrating largely on expanding the scope of constitutional jurisprudence, lawyers and legal academics have failed to examine possibilities for strategic lawsuits using the elaborate array of existing federal environmental statutes. Specifically, both lawyers and legal academics have needlessly neglected or shied away from the medical monitoring lawsuit available under section 107(a)(4)(B) of the Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liability Act of 1980 (CERCLA), to the disadvantage of potential environmental justice plaintiffs.

Influenza Virus-Infected Dendritic Cells Stimulate Strong Proliferative And Cytolytic Responses From Human Cd8+ T Cells, Nina Bhardwaj, Armin Bender, Noemi Gonzalez Jan 1994

Influenza Virus-Infected Dendritic Cells Stimulate Strong Proliferative And Cytolytic Responses From Human Cd8+ T Cells, Nina Bhardwaj, Armin Bender, Noemi Gonzalez

Publications

Antigen-specific, CD8+, cytolytic T lymphocytes (CTLs) could potentially provide resistance to several infectious and malignant diseases. However, the cellular requirements for the generation of specific CTLs in human lymphocyte cultures are not well defined, and repetitive stimulation with antigen is often required. We find that strong CD8+ CTL responses to influenza virus can be generated from freshly isolated blood T cells, as long as dendritic cells are used as antigen presenting cells (APCs). Small numbers of dendritic cells (APC:T cell ratio of 1:50-1:100) induce these CTL responses from most donors in 7 d of culture, but monocytes are weak or …

The Tissue Distribution Of The B7-2 Costimulator In Mice: Abundant Expression On Dendritic Cells In Situ And During Maturation In Vitro, Kayo Inaba, Margit D. Witmer-Pack, Muneo M. Inaba Jan 1994

The Tissue Distribution Of The B7-2 Costimulator In Mice: Abundant Expression On Dendritic Cells In Situ And During Maturation In Vitro, Kayo Inaba, Margit D. Witmer-Pack, Muneo M. Inaba

Publications

B7-2 is a recently discovered, second ligand for the CTLA-4/CD28, T cell signaling system. Using the GL-1 rat monoclonal antibody (mAb), we monitored expression of B7-2 on mouse leukocytes with an emphasis on dendritic cells. By cytofluorography, little or no B7-2 was detected on most cell types isolated from spleen, thymus, peritoneal cavity, skin, marrow, and blood. However, expression of B7-2 could be upregulated in culture. In the case of epidermal and spleen dendritic cells, which become highly immunostimulatory for T cells during a short period of culture, the upregulation of B7-2 was dramatic and did not require added stimuli. …

Helminths Of The Gastrointestinal Tract Of Raccoons In Southern Illinois With Management Implications Of Baylisascaris Procyonis Occurrence, Gary L. Birch, George A. Feldhamer, William G. Dyer

Publications

The gastrointestinal tracts of 60 raccoons (Procyon lotor) were examined for helminths. Six species were found: four species of nematodes (Arthrocephalus lotoris, Physaloptera rara, Gnathostoma procyonis, and Baylisascaris procyonis); one species of cestode (Mesocestoides variabilis); and one species of acanthocephalan (Macracanthorhynchus ingens). Baylisascaris procyonis has been implicated in the decline of woodrat populations throughout the northeast United States. As such, this parasite also may have been a factor in the extirpation of the eastern woodrat (Neotoma floridana) throughout most of southern Illinois. The frequency occurrence of Baylisascaris …

Twelve Step Addiction Recovery Groups: An American Religious Movement, James Shoopman Jan 1994

Twelve Step Addiction Recovery Groups: An American Religious Movement, James Shoopman

Publications

This dissertation argues that Twelve Step addiction recovery groups, modelled on Alcoholics Anonymous, are an American religious movement, deserving a place in American religion scholarship.

Chapter one argues that Twelve step groups are not a religious "institution," but a social movement, working for recovery from addiction. Secondarily and functionally they constitute a religious movement, working for change in the way people experience spiritual life.

Chapter Two shows that the original Twelve Step fellowship, Alcoholics Anonymous, developed a methodology for overcoming addiction to alcohol which they described as a "spiritual way of life." Chapter Three shows that AA borrowed methods and …
