Soundtrack De Los 90: Argentine Popular Music And Memory, Delia Pamela Fuentes Korban
Soundtrack De Los 90: Argentine Popular Music And Memory, Delia Pamela Fuentes Korban
Open Access Dissertations
This dissertation focuses on how popular music not only captures and records historical events, but also creates what Pierre Nora termed lieux de mémoire, or sites of memory. Music is a privileged art form because it reaches a wider audience and its lyrics manifest the changes occurring within its genres. My dissertation focuses on and analyzes song texts produced during the 90s from three musical genres: tango, rock chabón (from the hood) and cumbia villera (a derivative of cumbia, but from the shantytowns or villas). Framed against the historical context of the Menem years (1989-1999), the selection of songs that …

Leoš Janácek: The Theory Of Speech Melody In His Piano Sonata 1.X.1905 And In The Mists., Mirette Hanna
Open Access Dissertations
Janáček’s fascination with the intonation of speech started at an early age, and it accompanied him throughout his life. The study outlines elements of speech found in Janáček’s two piano works: the piano sonata “1. X. 1905” and the piano cycle “In the Mists” based on comparing and drawing parallels between his speech melody snippets that he collected during his lifetime with a number of motifs and techniques he employed in those studied works. This parallelizing process also relies on Janáček’s written articles, interviews and essays, as well as on research conducted on his operas and vocal works. Their importance …

Bright Bass Timbres In The "Dark Age" Of Jazz: Eddie Gomez, Three Quartets, Transgression, And Transcendence, Tianyuan (Ken) Ge
Open Access Dissertations
This paper offers a case study of the iconic jazz bassist Eddie Gomez. By locating his negotiations of timbre within historical and social contexts, and examining how others have interpreted his sound, I show that jazz bass timbre can communicate meanings and facilitate discourses of identity, authenticity, gender, and race. Specifically, I rely on a close hearing of Gomez’s tone on the 1981 recording Three Quartets, framing my analysis in research from the fields of historical musicology, ethnomusicology, African American studies, gender studies, timbral and sound studies, and music phenomenology. In doing so, I portray timbre as a common thread …
Navigating Identities: The Musical Lives Of Four Second-Generation Immigrant Children In Miami, Florida, Sandra Sanchez Adorno
Navigating Identities: The Musical Lives Of Four Second-Generation Immigrant Children In Miami, Florida, Sandra Sanchez Adorno
Open Access Dissertations
The expanding social worlds of middle childhood prompt children to evaluate and explore their sense of selves to better understand who they are and where they fit in (Erikson, 1968; Josselson & Harway, 2012). Children born in the USA to at least one foreign-born parent, also known as second-generation immigrants, often straddle multiple cultures, making their social contexts highly diverse and their explorations of identity complex (Sebastian, 2008). This collective case study focused on the home musical lives of four second-generation children in Miami, Florida, USA to gain greater insight into music’s meaning in their lives and the role it …

The Puerto Rican Danza: A Stylistic Study With Emphasis On Performance, Teaching, And Practicing Strategies, Inesa Gegprifti
Open Access Dissertations
The danza puertorriqueña is considered a national emblem for Puerto Rico and it has a long-standing history as the music that has accompanied the people of the Island through multiple political, social, and cultural changes. In essence, it stemmed from the choreographed European contradanza and its inherited influences. However, the danza, particularly that for piano, took on a life of its own with idiosyncratic elements of the Caribbean culture in the mid-nineteenth century. This study traces the history and style of the danza since its adoption in Puerto Rico and provides more information about the genre with the hope of …

The last reigning monarch of the Kingdom of Hawaiʻi, Queen Liliʻuokalani was also an avid composer of Hawaiian choral music. Her vast output places her as the most influential Native Hawaiian composer of the nineteenth century as well as a crucial figure in the development of Hawaiian choral music. Utilizing the history and repertoire of Lili’uokalani as a framework, this essay presents a guide for conductors of nineteenth century Hawaiian choral music in idiomatic performance issues specific to the repertoire, including diction, choral tone, instrumentation, and Native Hawaiian performance ritual. Because the performance practices of Liliʻuokalani’s music continue to evolve …

The Female Percussionist: Social And Cultural Perspectives, Ksenija Komljenović
Open Access Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to explore the presence of and perceptions about professional female percussionists. The history of female participation in music in Western society reveals patterns of bias and segregation, in addition to progress made by those who fought for equality. Although a significant body of research has focused on gender instrument bias, the topic of female percussionists has been largely untended. Previous literature reveals several themes underlying this topic, including sex stereotyping of roles in music, instrument choice, childhood gender roles and their social context, role modeling in higher educational institutions, work-life balance, and reported issues …

Categorizations are very necessary as shortcuts to facilitate teaching, academic discourse, and for publicizing, but they are also very dangerous in the attempt to put absolute values on unquantifiable concepts, such as styles, ideas, or eras. This essay presents dividing lines of musical genres as they are: blurred and open to crossovers. The discussion focuses on both musical and historical elements of jazz and classical music, particularly from the perspective of their mutual influence during the twentieth century and beginning of the twenty-first century. Departing from the Third Stream concept, the purpose of this research is to discuss the importance …

Despite the plethora of substantial Japanese classical composers, information about their lives and compositions are relatively unknown outside their homeland. Considering the formidable quality of their compositions, these composers deserve a place within the mainstream of classical music scene. Composer Mutsuo Shishido (1929-2007) is one of the most important of these composers, as he left many appealing works and has been garnering increasing attention among classical musicians. A pupil of André Jolivet and Olivier Messiaen, and a contemporary of Toru Takemitsu, Shishido is a unique and captivating composer with the style of synthesizing Western classical contemporary music with traditional Japanese …

Spirituality And Scottish Identity In Selected Works Of James Macmillan, Bethany Lynn Alvey
Open Access Dissertations
Sir James MacMillan's choral works have been studied through the lens of, and labelled by, three extra-musical themes: Catholicism, Scottish identity, and social consciousness. This study investigates the veracity of these labels from the perspective of the composer, and their application to choral music. Interviews with the composer were conducted in Glasgow, Scotland. Two choral works were studied, the large choral-orchestral work, St John Passion, and the short a cappella piece, "The Gallant Weaver." Texts and translations, as well as full transcripts of the interviews are included in the appendix.

Functions Of Gender In Soca: An Historical And Lyrical Analysis Of St. Lucian Soca, Ekeama Sharon Goddard-Scovel
Open Access Dissertations
Soca’s music history negatively impacts female soca artists, especially when taking into account each island’s differing Carnival music history. Contrary to popular assumptions, soca (as well as calypso) did not develop similarly in every Caribbean island. Soca actually exemplifies a pan-Caribbean phenomenon that is regionally as well as gender specific. St. Lucia illustrates this phenomenon as it has a markedly different calypso history from Trinidad, which has long been called the land of calypso, and more recently the land of soca. I use St. Lucia as a departure point from which to dismantle the overarching Trinidadian narrative that many, including …

The Atlas Ensemble is an Amsterdam based ensemble whose musicians combine both Western and non-Western musical traditions. Learning about new instruments, …
Gideon Klein's String Trio: A Study, Robyn Clair Savitzky
Gideon Klein's String Trio: A Study, Robyn Clair Savitzky
Open Access Dissertations
This essay explores Gideon Klein’s identity through a study of the String Trio he composed at Terezín, a Nazi concentration camp outside of Prague. How did labels placed on this work influence his identity and music? How do modern classifications affect the music today? Works composed in concentration camps are often labeled “Holocaust music.” Today, such works are frequently programed in memorial concerts, a framework which lends itself to an oversimplified understanding of music’s role in the Holocaust. Through examining Klein’s String Trio within a performance and musicological context, this essay aims to answer questions about identity in music and …

At the heart of this cultural form, both musically and symbolically, is the drum (commonly referred to in Uruguay as tambor), along with collective drumming performances known as llamadas. Scholars of Afro-Uruguayan history, culture, and music are quick to acknowledge the significance of the drum to candombe, linking it to Afro-Uruguayan discourses and the politics of national identity. These advancements arose largely from the work of the percussionist Marcos Suzano, whose name has become almost synonymous with the pandeiro itself. Born in Rio de Janeiro in 1963, his innovative use of sound reinforcement and development of new performance techniques …

Inner-city youth are often labeled in social science research with the "at risk" construct, signifying the risk of anticipated failure based on children's (or families') deficiencies. In the context of an arts project, the inner-city students in this study demonstrated ability to overcome the deficient "at risk" label imposed by society. The year-long, teacher-practitioner research took place in an underprivileged K-5 elementary school in the Northeast. Using a sociocultural framework, I examined what happens when children in this school setting are given an arts project in which they are allowed to be self-directive. The arts project consisted of weekly participation …
