Machine Learning For Optimized Ocean Exploration Data Analysis, Puja Banerjee Jan 2025

Machine Learning For Optimized Ocean Exploration Data Analysis, Puja Banerjee

Open Access Dissertations

The deep sea remains one of the most crucial frontiers in Earth sciences, with vast unknowns regarding its biodiversity, ecosystem dynamics, and geological features and processes, and impact and interaction with humans. Ocean exploration seeks to address this gap by focusing data collection in some of the least known places on the planet in order to significantly expand our knowledge of marine ecosystems, geological formations, and oceanographic processes. Ocean exploration datasets provide crucial insights into a wide range of scientific domains including: deep sea biodiversity, seafloor morphology, and deep-sea soundscapes. The advent of autonomous and remotely operated underwater vehicles (AUVs …

Kinematics And Dynamics Of The Pamir, Central Asia And Main Ethiopian Rift, Cassidy N. Jay Seymour Aug 2018

Kinematics And Dynamics Of The Pamir, Central Asia And Main Ethiopian Rift, Cassidy N. Jay Seymour

Open Access Dissertations

Plate tectonic theory predicts that deformation is localized in narrow zones along plate boundaries, but geodetic, seismic, and geological observations show that deformation of continents is diffuse and complex. Furthermore, dense, recently published GPS velocities hint at regional heterogeneities within two of the most widely studied continental deformation zones in the world: the India-Eurasia collision zone and East African Rift System. Here, we use numerical models to investigate deformation in the Pamir, a region west of the Tibetan Plateau, and the Main Ethiopian Rift, the northernmost segment of the East African Rift System. Inverse and forward numerical models are constrained …

Visualization And Quantification Of Fluid Dynamics In Fractured Carbonates Using 4d Ground Penetrating Radar (4d Gpr), Pierpaolo Marchesini Nov 2015

Visualization And Quantification Of Fluid Dynamics In Fractured Carbonates Using 4d Ground Penetrating Radar (4d Gpr), Pierpaolo Marchesini

Open Access Dissertations

Subseismic-scale structural heterogeneities and their lateral variability make the characterization of fluid dynamics in carbonate reservoirs an open challenge. Even a precise reconstruction of fracture networks does not guarantee a comprehensive knowledge of preferential flow paths. Current characterization of flow parameters largely relies on 0.01 - 0.1 m scale laboratory experiments, sample plug measurements, and modeling. However, a large degree of interpolation prevents these methods from fully reproducing realistic flow conditions. The goal of this dissertation is to use 4D GPR in a reservoir-scale infiltration experiment, to assess the role of small-scale structural heterogeneities (such as deformation bands and open …

Mass Spectrometric Studies On Petroleum Asphaltenes And Organosulfur Compounds, On Functional-Group Selective Ion-Molecule Reactions And On Gas-Phase Reactivity Of Meta-Benzynes Toward Amino Acids, Weijuan Tang Jan 2015

Mass Spectrometric Studies On Petroleum Asphaltenes And Organosulfur Compounds, On Functional-Group Selective Ion-Molecule Reactions And On Gas-Phase Reactivity Of Meta-Benzynes Toward Amino Acids, Weijuan Tang

Open Access Dissertations

Mass spectrometry has found a wide variety of applications in many fields of study, such as fundamental chemistry, biological science, food and fuels, advanced materials, etc. Due to its high sensitivity, selectivity and speed, mass spectrometry provides an invaluable tool for direct mixture analysis. When coupled with separation methods, such as gas chromatography or high performance liquid chromatography, analysis of minor components in complex mixtures is possible. In addition to the molecular weight information, mass spectrometers can provide structural information for the ionized analyte molecules. However, mass spectrometric analysis of complex mixtures is not without challenges, such as suitable evaporation/ionization …

Quaternary Growth History Of Glover's Reef, Belize: Insights Into Reef Distribution, Ecological Change, And Pleistocene Sea Level, Noelle J. Van Ee Aug 2014

Quaternary Growth History Of Glover's Reef, Belize: Insights Into Reef Distribution, Ecological Change, And Pleistocene Sea Level, Noelle J. Van Ee

Open Access Dissertations

Glover’s Reef is a coral atoll located outside of the Belize Barrier Reef, 30 km from the coast of southern Belize. A single-channel seismic survey of approximately 111 km of grid lines reveals that almost 90% of the surveyed lagoon patch reefs sit on Pleistocene topographic highs. In contrast to previous theories that emphasize the role of karst processes during sea-level low stands in creating topography, records from ten rotary cores into modern reef deposits indicated that the Pleistocene topographic highs are comprised of in situ reef facies: “Reefs sit on reefs”. Although Pleistocene reef deposits formed the template for …

Investigation Of Seismic Activity And Subsurface Structure Under Tectonic And Anthropogenic Settings, Qiong Zhang Aug 2014

Investigation Of Seismic Activity And Subsurface Structure Under Tectonic And Anthropogenic Settings, Qiong Zhang

Open Access Dissertations

To study interaction of tectonics and earthquakes, we need to address two fundamental questions, Earth's internal structure and the cause of triggered/inhibited seismicity. High-resolution seismic velocity models and analyses of high-precision relocated earthquake have proven to provide useful information from global to regional scale. In areas of active tectonics and/or anthropogenic activities, the stress heterogeneity could largely result from lateral and vertical variation of structure in local scale, which accounts for the non-uniform earthquake distribution. We have mainly conducted two regional studies in Puerto Rico, the plate boundary zone, and the active Coso geothermal field. By inverting for three-dimensional velocity …

The Earthquake Cycle Of Strike-Slip Faults, Gina M. Schmalzle Dec 2008

The Earthquake Cycle Of Strike-Slip Faults, Gina M. Schmalzle

Open Access Dissertations

An earthquake is a mechanism of stress release along plate boundaries due to relative motion between the Earth's lithospheric blocks. The period in which stresses are accruing across the plate boundary is known as the interseismic portion of the earthquake cycle. This dissertation focuses on interseismic portion of the earthquake cycle to extract characteristics of fault, shear zone and rock properties. Global Positioning System (GPS) data are used to observe the pattern of deformation across two primarily strike-slip fault systems: the Carrizo Segment of the San Andreas Fault (SAF) and the Eastern California Shear Zone (ECSZ). Two sets of GPS …
