Artful Healing: Exploring Creative Expression And Play In Children's Hospitals, Phoebe Strobino
Artful Healing: Exploring Creative Expression And Play In Children's Hospitals, Phoebe Strobino
Masters Theses
This thesis explores the role and accessibility of creative expression and play in children’s hospitals, and the impact these ideas have on patients. I explored these ideas through teaching four lessons at Hasbro Children’s Hospital in Providence, Rhode Island. Two of these lessons were taught in group sessions, and two were taught in one-on-one sessions, with participants ranging in age. Following an introduction to each lesson, I provide the plan itself along with general observations and reflections on teaching. Due to the nature of the setting, information is kept purposefully broad throughout my observations in order to respect the anonymity …
Conditional Discrimination And Generalization Of Facial Cues As A Function Of Training Multiple Exemplars With Autistic Preschoolers, Sebastien Bosch
Conditional Discrimination And Generalization Of Facial Cues As A Function Of Training Multiple Exemplars With Autistic Preschoolers, Sebastien Bosch
Masters Theses
Individuals with diagnosed autism typically show deficiencies in discrimination of facial cues. The ability to respond to facial expressions was assessed and trained with 3 four-year-old subjects diagnosed with autism. Stimulus presentations involved four different stimulus sets ( cards with stick figure, cards with cartoon figures, and cards with photographs of a man and a woman displaying the emotional expression).
Training consisted of differential reinforcement of correct responses. The experimental design was a multiple baseline across stimulus sets, with generalization probes conducted after mastery level of performance was reached on each stimulus set. Some evidence of generalization was observed on …

Music And The Effect It Has On The Motor Learning Of A Serial Task In Children, Ages Seven And Eight, Karen L. Kurncz, Tara K. Nielsen
Masters Theses
Purpose: To study the hypothesis that music will improve the motor learning of a serial task in seven and eight year old children.
Design: Acquisition - Retention Design
Intervention: The twenty-one subjects were randomly divided into two conditional groups, those who received musical intervention and those who did not. Each subject performed the serial task eleven times during the acquisition session. During the acquisition session, the only difference between the groups was the addition of music to the verbal cues in the experimental group. Approximately twenty-four hours later, each subject returned for a retention session to assess the motor learning …

The Background and Purpose of the Study
Introduction
This study is generally concerned with an evaluation of the proficiencies of speech therapists in training. The importance of this area, while obvious, has received little formal recognition in the field of speech pathology. That this topic has not been the concern of more research may be understood when we consider a contemporary and authoritative definition of the word 'therapy'. Colby (5, p. 95) states that therapy is: "...a practical art, a craft like agriculture, or medicine or wine making in which an artisan relies on an incomplete, fragmentary of knowledge and …
