Master's Projects and Capstones

With over one million confirmed deaths from COVID-19, the United States (U.S.) continues to battle the public health crisis arising from the spread of the SARS-CoV-2 virus. The COVID-19 pandemic has had a devastating impact on our economic, social, and health systems. Social distancing efforts and other precautionary measures such as mask-wearing have not sufficiently reduced morbidity and mortality from COVID-19; thus, COVID-19 vaccinations are an important tool for substantially alleviating the effects of the pandemic. Although COVID-19 vaccines are available to all Americans aged six months and older, many individuals are hesitant to receive vaccines. The two most common …

Master's Projects and Capstones

With the spread of the global health crisis that is COVID-19, hate crimes towards Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders (AAPIs) have skyrocketed in the U.S., largely due to the charged rhetoric and misperceptions perpetrated by the U.S. government that link COVID-19 to people of Asian descent. This project analyzes the history of discrimination towards AAPIs in the United States and its present-day context. Moreover, this analysis reveals the detrimental effects of verbal and physical assaults on the emotional and physical health of AAPIs and explores the possible solutions we can implement to decrease these crimes. Finally, I consider the implications …

Addressing The Phenomena Of Nursing Burnout: Seeking The Need For Mental Health Interventions To Support The Nursing Workforce, Cialina L. Moy May 2022

Addressing The Phenomena Of Nursing Burnout: Seeking The Need For Mental Health Interventions To Support The Nursing Workforce, Cialina L. Moy

Master's Projects and Capstones

Problem: Nursing burnout has been an existing phenomenon, which the COVID-19 pandemic has only exacerbated. Burnout has contributed to escalated mental health concerns, increased staff turnover rates, and the nationwide nursing shortage.

Context: Studies indicate that depression, anxiety, and stress significantly correlate to burnout; studies also reveal that burnout consequently contributes to job dissatisfaction and organizational turnover. To reduce perceived burnout and increase nurse retention at the ambulatory COVID-19 clinics, nurses completed a pilot program that integrated two mental health tools.

Intervention: Nurses responded to a pre-survey to identify burnout factors and measure perceived burnout, using a modification of the …

Eservice-Learning During Covid-19: How Community-Engaged Learning Courses At The University Of San Francisco Responded To The Pandemic, Erin I. Hassett Aug 2021

Eservice-Learning During Covid-19: How Community-Engaged Learning Courses At The University Of San Francisco Responded To The Pandemic, Erin I. Hassett

Master's Projects and Capstones

During the COVID-19 pandemic, universities and colleges had to quickly transition their courses from in-person to online. This switch to online learning heavily impacted community-engaged learning (CEL) courses because it meant that internships with community partners had to become remote as well as the coursework. The University of San Francisco (USF) requires their undergraduate students to take at least one CEL course during their four years there as a way to connect them to the school’s Jesuit Catholic values, so pivoting these courses to a remote setting and keeping them available to students throughout the pandemic was imperative. This paper …

Oakland’S Community Clinic Covid-19 Vaccination Improvement Project, Jesly Esparza May 2021

Oakland’S Community Clinic Covid-19 Vaccination Improvement Project, Jesly Esparza

Master's Projects and Capstones

Vaccination hesitancy has been an ongoing issue over the years, but is now an even more serious problem ever since the newly developed Coronavirus (COVID-19) vaccines were released for emergency use. Due to the rapid event of COVID-19, community clinics have not been able to create effective outreach methods to inform patients about the vaccines, thus the vaccination rates have been low. The goal is to increase vaccination uptake in a Latino community clinic in Oakland, California. These patients have shared their distrust in the healthcare system due to racism and their disbeliefs regarding the effectiveness of these COVID-19 vaccines. …

A Systems Approach to Increase the ICU Nursing Workforce During a Pandemic

Abstract

In early March 2020 an intensive care unit (ICU) patient died of COVID-19 in an integrated healthcare system hospital in Northern California. Data from China and the CDC indicated that more healthcare members would require intensive care and could overwhelm the 21 acute care hospital macrosystem. A microsystem pilot program to upskill peri-anesthesia care unit (PACU) RNs to care for ICU patients was initiated. Concurrently the upskill pilot program was reviewed by macrosystem nursing leadership. Over a three-week period, the program was standardized, disseminated and implemented across …

Maintaining Team Vitality In The Asu Pacu During The Covid-19 Crisis, Melissa Eagleton

Master's Projects and Capstones

Abstract

Problem: COVID-19 has generated issues and concerns in the healthcare field for staff and clinical settings worldwide, especially for this ambulatory surgery unit post-anesthesia care unit (ASU PACU). Although there was no measurable quality gap, there was a concern for a decrease in patient safety, employee satisfaction, and burnout because the staff were required to become critical care nurses to provide care for the critically ill COVID-19 patients.

Context: The ASU PACU was a critical part of the surge plan if the hospital could no longer house the influx of COVID-19 patients. The unit was shut down entirely two …

Understanding The Significance Of Virtual Support During Global Pandemic In Young Adults Diagnosed With Hepatitis C, Veronika Arkhipova Dec 2020

Understanding The Significance Of Virtual Support During Global Pandemic In Young Adults Diagnosed With Hepatitis C, Veronika Arkhipova

Master's Projects and Capstones

Hepatitis C is a viral infection that attacks the liver and leads to inflammation. In recent years, the prevalence of hepatitis C infections among 20 and 30 years of age has increased by 300 percent, and between 30 and 39 years by 400 percent. Due to the global coronavirus pandemic, people diagnosed with Hepatitis C have lost access to mental health services and resources, including in-person meetings with support groups. Since most states enforced stay-at-home order, many community centers, non-profit organizations that work with Hepatitis C patients and the affected population provide limited to no access to support group meetings …

Taiwan's Response To Covid-19 Pandemic, An Pei Peng May 2020

Taiwan's Response To Covid-19 Pandemic, An Pei Peng

Master's Projects and Capstones

Taiwan has constructed a response to the COVID-19 pandemic that not only has largely protected its citizens from the rapid community spread that has devastated larger countries around the world, but has also, commanded acclaim from the World Health Organization (WHO). Ironically, the WHO has refused to allow Taiwan entry into the organization because of the island’s tenuous relationship with China. The tensions between Taiwan and China are rooted in a post-World War II history that is predicated on Taiwan’s self-governing assertions despite China’s desire to consider it as part of the mainland. Such geopolitical and economic tensions have continued …

The Impact Of Covid-19 On Singapore: Understanding Recent Events And Exploring Future Possibilities, Guanshuo Li

Master's Projects and Capstones

Singapore has among the lowest COVID-19 infection and mortality rates in the world, despite being a major urban country and global economic hub in Southeast Asia. This paper explored how Singapore has accomplished this using an analysis of literature and current events news. The analysis demonstrated that Singapore has mobilized a cross-industry and cross-functioning group of healthcare professionals, medical researchers, biostatisticians, and personal protective equipment manufactures to effectively combat COVID-19. Singapore’s government ministries have enacted a campaign of public education, social distancing, and business closures to combat the spread of COVID-19. The government has passed a significant economic relief bill …
