U–Pb-Dated Flowstones Restrict South African Early Hominin Record To Dry Climate Phases, Robyn Pickering, Andy I.R. Herries, Jon D. Woodhead

KIP Articles

The Cradle of Humankind (Cradle) in South Africa preserves a rich collection of fossil hominins representing Australopithecus, Paranthropus and Homo1. The ages of these fossils are contentious2,3,4 and have compromised the degree to which the South African hominin record can be used to test hypotheses of human evolution. However, uranium–lead (U–Pb) analyses of horizontally bedded layers of calcium carbonate (flowstone) provide a potential opportunity to obtain a robust chronology5. Flowstones are ubiquitous cave features and provide a palaeoclimatic context, because they grow only during phases of increased effective precipitation6,7, ideally in closed caves. Here we show that flowstones from eight …

Estimating Epikarst Water Storage By Time-Lapse Surface-To-Depth Gravity Measurements, Cédric Champollion, Sabrina Deville, Jean Chéry, Erik Doerflinger, Nicolas Le Moigne, Roger Bayer, Philippe Vernant, Naomi Mazzilli

KIP Articles

The magnitude of epikarstic water storage variation is evaluated in various karst settings using a relative spring gravimeter. Gravity measurements are performed over a 1.5-year period at the surface and inside caves at different depths on three karst hydro-systems in southern France: two limestone karst systems and one dolomite karst system. We find that significant water storage variations occur in the first 10 m of karst unsaturated zone. The subsurface water storage is also evidenced by complementary magnetic resonance sounding. The comparison between sites of the depth gravity measurements with respect to net water inflow suggests that seasonal water storage …

Groundwater Management Of A Highly Dynamic Karst By Assessing Baseflow And Quickflow With A Rainfall-Discharge Model (Dardennes Springs, Se France, Cécile Baudement, Bruno Arfib, Naomi Mazzilli, Johan Jouves, Thierry Lamarque, Yves Guglielmi

KIP Articles

This paper aims at characterizing the groundwater flow in a highly dynamic karst aquifer using a global modeling approach based on rainfall and spring discharge time series. The Dardennes aquifer (SE France) was studied as it is used for drinking water supply and it also produces karst flash floods that increase the flood hazard downstream in urban areas. Three years of data were available, including a normal rainy year, a wet year and a dry year. Modeling was performed with the new platform KarstMod, a rainfall-discharge model with calibration tools. The Dardennes aquifer model was structured with three interconnected reservoirs: …

The Role Of Porous Matrix In Water Flow Regulation Within A Karst Unsaturated Zone: An Integrated Hydrogeophysical Approach, Simon D. Carrière, Konstantinos Chalikakis, Charles Danquigny

KIP Articles

Some portions of the porous rock matrix in the karst unsaturated zone (UZ) can contain large volumes of water and play a major role in water flow regulation. The essential results are presented of a local-scale study conducted in 2011 and 2012 above the Low Noise Underground Laboratory (LSBB – Laboratoire Souterrain à Bas Bruit) at Rustrel, southeastern France. Previous research revealed the geological structure and water-related features of the study site and illustrated the feasibility of specific hydrogeophysical measurements. In this study, the focus is on hydrodynamics at the seasonal and event timescales. Magnetic resonance sounding (MRS) measured a …

Analysis Of Site Formation And Assemblage Integrity Does Not Support Attribution Of The Uluzzian To Modern Humans At Grotta Del Cavallo, J. Zilhão, W. E. Banks, Francesco D’Errico Jul 2015

Analysis Of Site Formation And Assemblage Integrity Does Not Support Attribution Of The Uluzzian To Modern Humans At Grotta Del Cavallo, J. Zilhão, W. E. Banks, Francesco D’Errico

KIP Articles

Based on the morphology of two deciduous molars and radiocarbon ages from layers D and E of the Grotta del Cavallo (Lecce, Italy), assigned to the Uluzzian, it has been proposed that modern humans were the makers of this Early Upper Paleolithic culture and that this finding considerably weakens the case for an independent emergence of symbolism among western European Neandertals. Reappraisal of the new dating evidence, of the finds curated in the Taranto Antiquities depot, and of coeval publications detailing the site’s 1963–66 excavations shows that (a) Protoaurignacian, Aurignacian and Early Epigravettian lithics exist in the assemblages from layers …

Geologic Setting Of Mosul Dam And Its Engineering Implications, Julie R. Kelley, Lillian D. Wakeley, Seth W. Broadfoot Sep 2007

Geologic Setting Of Mosul Dam And Its Engineering Implications, Julie R. Kelley, Lillian D. Wakeley, Seth W. Broadfoot

KIP Articles

The geologic setting of Mosul Dam is critically important for its engineering implications and its usefulness and contribution to engineer- ing and operational decisions about the dam. The dam was constructed on alternating and highly variable units of gypsum, anhydrite, marl, and lime- stone, each of which is soluble in water under the environmental and hydrogeologic conditions of the dam. From a geologic standpoint, the foundation is very poor, and the site geology is the principal cause of con- tinuing intense concern about the safety of the structure. Mineralogic variability within rock units resulted from original depositional processes that created …

Geologic Conceptual Model Of Mosul Dam, Lillian D. Wakeley, Julie R. Kelley, Monte L. Pearson

KIP Articles

Mosul Dam, Iraq, was built in the 1980s on a foundation of soluble geologic materials. Because of the solubility of its foundation and abutments, maintenance grouting began immediately after construction and continues to the present. The U.S. Army is concerned about the stability of the dam, and about the potential military and political impacts that would accompany dam failure. At the request of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ Gulf Region Division, the U.S. Army Engineer Research and Development Center (ERDC) developed a three-dimensional (3-D) geologic conceptual model of the dam, as a tool to assist with improving dam safety …

Hydrogeology Of The Sistema Huautla Karst Groundwater Basin Association For Mexican Cave Studies Bulletin, Vol. 9, 2002, James H. Smith Jr.

KIP Articles

Sistema Huautla, in 2002 the world’s seventh deepest cave, at 1,475 meters, is one of the most complex vertical drainage systems in the world. The focus of this research was to study the geology, karst hydrology, and speleology of the Sistema Huautla cave system. Literature review and subsequent field mapping identified the geologic formations and tectonic structures that Sistema Huautla and tributary caves are developed within. Structural geology studies within the aquifer indicate that base-level conduits in the mapped portion of the aquifer are formed along a major normal fault system called the Sistema Huautla Fault. Conduits in other sections …

The Scalloping Phenomenon And Its Significance In Flowassisted-Corrosion., Villien Benoit, Y. Zheng, D. H. Lister

KIP Articles

The recently observed Flow-Assisted Corrosion (FAC) of CANDU outlet feeders is associated with a texturing of the corroding surface, called "scalloping", that imparts the appearance of orange peel. To study the evolution of erosion and dissolution patterns contributing to scalloping and to derive the link with corrosion, experiments on the dissolution of pipes made of plaster of Paris (CaSO4.½H2O) are being carried out. Flow-Assisted Corrosion is a significant problem with carbon steel components handling rapidly moving water or water/steam mixtures in the power generating industry. The mechanism of FAC in outlet feeders of CANDU reactors can be described in terms …
