Thinking Biblically About The Qur’An: An Exploration Of Qur’Anic Self-Image, Worldview, Hermeneutics, And Christology, Larry L. Lichtenwalter

Journal of the Adventist Theological Society

There is no question that a knowledge and understanding of the Qur’an is a sine qua non (an indispensable condition) in relating meaningfully to Muslims whose worldviews, customs, daily rituals, speech and thought patterns have been indelibly shaped by the Qur’an and its ethos.1 Knowing Muslim scriptures and their culture hold out the prospect to better communicate the gospel. But how so? Does the Qur’an contain redemptive analogies that can be used as bridges to present biblical faith?2 Or would its direct and tacit subversion of the essential elements of the Gospel deny such and press one to better present …

The Faith Of Jethro: Polytheist Or Monotheist?, Daniel Royo Jan 2021

The Faith Of Jethro: Polytheist Or Monotheist?, Daniel Royo

Journal of the Adventist Theological Society

The character of Jethro, as he appears in the book of Exodus, is an enigmatic figure in the biblical narrative.1 As a descendent of Midian, his ancestry goes back to Abraham (Gen 25:1–2; Exod 2:16; 3:1). Among Abraham’s children outside the covenant line, there would have been an opportunity to know about his relationship to God and his faith in divine providence. Yet polytheism was practiced among the Midianites (Num 25:16–18). This history forms a backdrop from which to examine the person of Jethro. In the book of Exodus, Jethro appears in three distinct roles: a priest of Midian (Exod …

The Parable Of The Rich Man And Lazarus: A Narrative-Exegetical Study Of Its Relationship To The Afterlife, Wealth, And Poverty–Part 1: The Afterlife, Thomas R. Shepherd Jan 2021

The Parable Of The Rich Man And Lazarus: A Narrative-Exegetical Study Of Its Relationship To The Afterlife, Wealth, And Poverty–Part 1: The Afterlife, Thomas R. Shepherd

Journal of the Adventist Theological Society

The parable of the Rich Man and Lazarus in Luke 16:19–31 has garnered attention and commentary by Christians for millennia. The primary interest in the parable arises from the fact that it is the only such story that Jesus told in which some sort of conscious life immediately after death is described, actually in quite vivid detail. That Jesus predicted the Final Judgment and the end of the world, the resurrection of the dead and His glorious Second Coming is seen over and over throughout the Gospels and in the rest of the New Testament. But what happens to a …

The Newness Of The New Covenant, Jiří Moskala Jan 2021

The Newness Of The New Covenant, Jiří Moskala

Journal of the Adventist Theological Society

A biblical covenant is the legal establishment of a relationship between God and His people. God takes the initiative, institutes this close relationship, and secures it personally. He makes the first step and does it because of His love for His children. The covenants He cuts are based on His love, grace, and faithfulness, and rooted in God’s eternal covenant established within the Trinity before the foundation of the world to save humankind in case they would fall into sin (Eph 1:3-4; 2 Tim 1:9; Titus 1:2; 1 Peter 1:20; Rev 13:8).1 In the epistle to the Hebrews, the apostle …

Needed: A More “Worldly Attitude” Christians And Creation Care, Jo Ann Davidson Jan 2021

Needed: A More “Worldly Attitude” Christians And Creation Care, Jo Ann Davidson

Journal of the Adventist Theological Society

The following biblical study will not deal with text-critical issues. The Christian canon will be accepted as a “system of truth”—as Dr. Colin Peckham eloquently contends: The Bible is a unique phenomenon, wholly unrivaled in the world of letters. It is a literary marvel, a moral miracle. It is not the product of one editor who chose his contributors, mapped out his course of study, gave each his assignment and then brought them all together in a neatly bound volume. Its writing is as diverse as can possibly be imagined. The vast differences in every aspect of its production are …

The “Spirit Of Prophecy” (Rev 19:10) In The Light Of Second Temple Jewish Usage, Davidson Razafiarivony Jan 2020

The “Spirit Of Prophecy” (Rev 19:10) In The Light Of Second Temple Jewish Usage, Davidson Razafiarivony

Journal of the Adventist Theological Society

The phrase “spirit of prophecy” occurs only once in the entire New Testament, and it is in Revelation 19:10. It appears to signify that the prophetic gift was still manifested in the time of the New Testament and in the latter days of the Church. But how can we understand the Jewish tradition through several statements from Jewish literature that prophecy ceased earlier?1 Can the understanding and use of “spirit of prophecy” within Judaism be of help to us as we interpret and apply the “spirit of prophecy” in the book of Revelation? In this study, I intend to engage …

Jesus’ Eschatological Legacy: The Tension Between The Nearness Of The Second Coming And The Mission Of The Church, Wilson Paroschi Jan 2020

Jesus’ Eschatological Legacy: The Tension Between The Nearness Of The Second Coming And The Mission Of The Church, Wilson Paroschi

Journal of the Adventist Theological Society

Jesus announced His return as imminent (Matt 10:23; 16:28; Mark 1:15; 9:1; Luke 21:31-32; cf. Matt 24:42-44; 25:1-13; Mark 13:33- 37; Luke 12:35-38; 21:34-36), and so it was expected by the early believers (Acts 3:19-21; Rom 13:11; 1 Cor 7:29-30; 15:51-58; 16:22; 1 Thess 4:15-18; Heb 10:25, 37; Jas 5:8; 1 Pet 4:17). On the other hand, He also left the disciples a worldwide mission (Matt 24:14; 26:13; Mark 13:10; Acts 1:8; cf. Rev 14:6), which requires time, and two thousand years later it seems that the church is still quite far from finishing it. This apparent contradiction has intrigued …

Kaaba & Sanctuary: Qur’Anic And Biblical Cosmic Centers—Ontological And Existential Worldviews, Larry L. Lichtenwalter Jan 2020

Kaaba & Sanctuary: Qur’Anic And Biblical Cosmic Centers—Ontological And Existential Worldviews, Larry L. Lichtenwalter

Journal of the Adventist Theological Society

The Qur’anic Kaaba1 and the Biblical heavenly sanctuary articulate respective cosmic centers with corresponding ontological and existential worldviews. Numerous parallels exist. Each cosmic center presents a paradigmatic system toward an understanding of reality. Each unfolds a view of God which brings significant implications for theology and practice. Each effects worldview reflection and formation. Each indicates the direction of prayer. Each comprises the place of spiritual gathering for the believing community. And, each defines the pathway to salvation, the cleansing of worshipers, the promise of divine blessing and peace, as well as oneness with God. It comes as no surprise that …

Education And Eschatology: Why Theological Education Is Necessary, Jiří Moskala Jan 2020

Education And Eschatology: Why Theological Education Is Necessary, Jiří Moskala

Journal of the Adventist Theological Society

I vividly recall the situation when I was 6 years old. It was a sunny Sabbath morning during the summer, and I was going to church. On the way, I met an elder, a very fine man admired by many who asked me what my plans were for the future. With great enthusiasm, I told him that in three months I would enroll in school for my first class. He turned to me, paused, and said: “Jiří, you probably will not even go to school, because Jesus will come soon,” and then he added, “and certainly you will not finish …

Appearances, Appearances: First Impressions Of Young David In 1 Samuel 16:12; 17:42, Mary Katherine Hom-Smith, Oliver Glanz

Journal of the Adventist Theological Society

But the LORD said to Samuel, “Do not consider his appearance or his height, for I have rejected him. The LORD does not look at the things human beings look at. People look at the outward appearance, but the LORD looks at the heart” (1 Sam 16:7 TNIV). . . . So he sent and had him brought in. He was glowing with health and had a fine appearance and handsome features. Then the LORD said, “Rise and anoint him; this is the one” (1 Sam 16:12 TNIV). . . . He looked David over and saw that he was …

Towards A Biblical Model Of Spirituality Part 1: Historical And Theological Background, Silvia Canale Bacchiocchi Jan 2019

Towards A Biblical Model Of Spirituality Part 1: Historical And Theological Background, Silvia Canale Bacchiocchi

Journal of the Adventist Theological Society

More than ever we are living at a time of increasing fascination with the concept of spirituality, so much so that the “spirituality phenomenon” has come to define our era.1 Some see this as the result of the psychoanalytic movement begun by Freud, or the disappointment in the Enlightenment’s faith in progress (a failure in light of twentieth century wars); others see it as resulting from the futility of modern existence, or the teachings of Vatican II. 2 Whatever the cause, it appears that nearly everyone—whether religious or atheist—is seeking to connect with God or a higher power. 3 Spirituality …

“Canst Thou By Searching Find Out God?”: On General Revelation And Adventist Theology, Glauber S. Araújo Jan 2019

“Canst Thou By Searching Find Out God?”: On General Revelation And Adventist Theology, Glauber S. Araújo

Journal of the Adventist Theological Society

Without God’s revelation in time and space, humanity would be utterly lost as to who He is, what His will is, or even if He exists. Morality would be completely alien to us and life would probably resume itself to the daily routine of looking after one’s own needs. Thankfully, God is a relational Being and from the moment He created mankind He began imparting knowledge about Himself, His actions and His thoughts. Through direct contact (Gen. 3:8; Exod. 33:11; Num. 12:8), visions (Num. 12:6), dreams (Gen. 28:12; Matt. 1:20), theophanies (Gen. 18:1-2, 13-14), angels (Num. 22:31-35), Urim and the …

Compassionate Ministry: Christological And Practical Reflections, Anna M. Galeniece Jan 2019

Compassionate Ministry: Christological And Practical Reflections, Anna M. Galeniece

Journal of the Adventist Theological Society

Christian compassion towards others should be built on a solid biblical-theological foundation if Christianity wants to witness about God and His character, which is repeatedly presented throughout the Scriptures and especially revealed in the God-person of Jesus Christ. The only way the world will ever experience this divine compassion and hear about the blessed hope in Jesus is when it practically sees and experiences the touch of the loving hearts of Christ’s followers.

A God Who Sees And Hears The “Other”: Hagar’S Theophany As An Illustration Of The Lord’S Benevolence Toward Those Outside The Covenant, Daniel Royo Jan 2019

A God Who Sees And Hears The “Other”: Hagar’S Theophany As An Illustration Of The Lord’S Benevolence Toward Those Outside The Covenant, Daniel Royo

Journal of the Adventist Theological Society

There is no more pivotal, defining, and foundational figure among the world’s monotheists than Abraham.1 All three major monotheistic religions assert their ancestral linkage to him.2 “Despite countless revolutions in the history of ideas, Abraham remains a defining figure for half the world’s believers.”3 The Hebrew Bible focuses on Abraham’s descendants through Isaac and Jacob who become known as the Children of Israel. The Christian faith sprang from Judaism with the claim that Jesus of Nazareth was the long-awaited Jewish Messiah, and the fulfillment of the promise made to Abraham that through his progeny all the nations of the earth …

Joseph, Judah And Jesus: Revisiting Genesis 37-50, Jo Ann Davidson Jan 2019

Joseph, Judah And Jesus: Revisiting Genesis 37-50, Jo Ann Davidson

Journal of the Adventist Theological Society

It is the position of this paper that the last thirteen chapters of Genesis highlight not only Joseph, but also Judah—both of whose lives are types of Christ, albeit in different ways. Not only are the noble attributes of Joseph’s life reflected in Jesus, but Jesus is also the “Lion of the Tribe of Judah (Rev 5:4).” Contra some claims of careless “redacting,” the Judah narratives are rightly and evocatively found within the Joseph cycle. Familiarity with the Genesis narratives creates the possibility of missing or overlooking the theology embedded in the shape, structure, and content of them. 1 Thereby …

Radically New Beginning—Radically New End: Creation And Eschatology In The New Testament, Laszlo Gallusz Jan 2018

Radically New Beginning—Radically New End: Creation And Eschatology In The New Testament, Laszlo Gallusz

Journal of the Adventist Theological Society

The term “eschatology,“ derived from the Greek adjective eschatos (“last,” “final”), is a word with many meanings.1 Essentially, it designates the doctrine about “last things.” Daley observes that the core of eschatology is “faith in final solutions,“ therefore the concept of hope is inherent to it. 2 He points out that eschatology appeals to “the hope of believing people that the incompleteness of their present experience of God will be resolved, their present thirst for God fulfilled, their present need for release and salvation realized.”3 Thus, eschatology reflects fundamental Christian convictions about God, the world and human existence. It deals …

Cosmic Impact Of Calvary, Norman R. Gulley Jan 2018

Cosmic Impact Of Calvary, Norman R. Gulley

Journal of the Adventist Theological Society

The Conflict of the Ages series by Ellen G. White begins and ends with the words “God is love.”2 God’s love is an eternal self-existent, inner-history of reciprocal love, where the three Persons of the Godhead love each other. “’God is love.’ 1 John 4:16. His nature, His law, is love. It ever has been; it ever will be. . . . Every manifestation of creative power is an expression of infinite love. The sovereignty of God involves fullness of blessing to all created beings.”3 The Godhead’s love overflowed into every created being, including Lucifer. All created beings were given …

Understanding The Geologic Record In A Seventh-Day Adventist Perspective, Samuel A. Abdala Jan 2018

Understanding The Geologic Record In A Seventh-Day Adventist Perspective, Samuel A. Abdala

Journal of the Adventist Theological Society

In his classical collection of biographies titled Parallel Lives, Plutarch tells of the mischievous Procrustes, whose defeat was counted among the feats of the Athenian hero Theseus. Procrustes had the curious habit of inviting any passerby traveler to rest at his abode, only to meticulously impose upon his guest the requirement that the guest be made to proportionally fit the bed that he had provided for him. If the guest were too short, he would be stretched (needless to say, to his death) until the body met the bed’s length. If the guest were too tall, he would be executed …

The Holy Spirit In The New Testament, John K. Mcvay Jan 2018

The Holy Spirit In The New Testament, John K. Mcvay

Journal of the Adventist Theological Society

Some time ago a challenging event occurs in our family. The problem is this: It is an invisible event. We need to know what has happened and what to do about it. However, we have no way to access that information since it is hidden from sight. The incident occurs as my daughter is playing in the park. Not being adept at soccer, she steps up on a soccer ball in a clumsy way and falls awkwardly on her right arm. The arm immediately becomes extremely painful, limp, and useless. A most significant event has just occurred. Hidden behind skin, …

The Meaning Of The Intercessory Ministry Of Jesus Christ On Our Behalf In The Heavenly Sanctuary, Jiri Moskala Thd, Phd Jan 2017

The Meaning Of The Intercessory Ministry Of Jesus Christ On Our Behalf In The Heavenly Sanctuary, Jiri Moskala Thd, Phd

Journal of the Adventist Theological Society

"Christ’s intercessory ministry is twofold: He reveals God’s character and His values to humanity, and presents our needs, struggles, and issues to God. The Triune God closely collaborates in this double mission. A decision for Jesus Christ means complete salvation—eternal life (Heb 7:25), and He is always ready to help (1 John 2:1; 1:8-9)."

The Faithful And True Witness Of Revelation 1:5 And 3:14, S. Joseph Kidder Jan 2017

The Faithful And True Witness Of Revelation 1:5 And 3:14, S. Joseph Kidder

Journal of the Adventist Theological Society

"Since the concept of witnessing is very broad in the Bible, I have limited this article to six: in ed and martys, in Psalm 89, in Isaiah 40-55, in the Johannine writing, in faithfulness, and in the character of God. The main emphasis throughout this article is on how each category enhances our understanding of the meaning and use of the phrase the “faithful and true witness” in Revelation."

“They Will Be Like Angels.” Paradise Without Marriage?, Rene Gehring Jan 2016

“They Will Be Like Angels.” Paradise Without Marriage?, Rene Gehring

Journal of the Adventist Theological Society

"This article deals with Jesus’ statement that “in the resurrection they neither marry nor are given in marriage, but are like angels in heaven” (Matt 22:30; Mark 12:25; cf. Luke 20:34-36) and a possible biblical rationale for the abolishment of this originally Edenic institution in the new paradise."

Isaiah’S Messiah: Adventist Identity For The Last Days, Stephane Beaulieu Jan 2016

Isaiah’S Messiah: Adventist Identity For The Last Days, Stephane Beaulieu

Journal of the Adventist Theological Society

This article proposes that Isaiah’s Messiah is the essence of Adventism and is what Adventists must proclaim in the eschaton. Portraits of the Messiah and His work for the people of God permeate the book of Isaiah. And while Isaiah’s Messiah was relevant for the people of the seventh century, the Messiah is portrayed as the One who will deliver and save His people now as well as then. In fact, Isaiah places his message of the Messiah in the realm of the last days.

Genesis 3 As A Model For Understanding The Nature Of Sin And Salvation, Jiri Moskala Thd, Phd

Journal of the Adventist Theological Society

"In order to perceive the nature of sin clearly, it is necessary to freshly investigate what is sin and its consequences according to God’s revelation. This biblical-theological study is principally limited to Genesis chap. 3."
