Reconsidering The Meaning Of The “Laying On Of Hands” In 1timothy 5:22 Through A Structural Approach: The Use Of Ταῦτα In 1timothy, Sampson M. Nwaomah, Nicholas B. Bitamazire
Journal of the Adventist Theological Society
Traditionally, the phrase “lay hands on anyone” in 1 Tim 5:22 has been interpreted as a reference to ordination (identification or appointment). However, others think that it refers to the reception back to membership of erring individuals and lately some argue that the reference is in regard to the practice of accusation.1 Some scholars that depart from the tradition argue that this verse signals a new paragraph and hence a transition from the topic of elders to that of the erstwhile believers.2 This argument aligns with the interpretation of re-admission of erring persons. On the other hand, Brian P. Irwin …
The Faith Of Jethro: Polytheist Or Monotheist?, Daniel Royo
The Faith Of Jethro: Polytheist Or Monotheist?, Daniel Royo
Journal of the Adventist Theological Society
The character of Jethro, as he appears in the book of Exodus, is an enigmatic figure in the biblical narrative.1 As a descendent of Midian, his ancestry goes back to Abraham (Gen 25:1–2; Exod 2:16; 3:1). Among Abraham’s children outside the covenant line, there would have been an opportunity to know about his relationship to God and his faith in divine providence. Yet polytheism was practiced among the Midianites (Num 25:16–18). This history forms a backdrop from which to examine the person of Jethro. In the book of Exodus, Jethro appears in three distinct roles: a priest of Midian (Exod …
Needed: A More “Worldly Attitude” Christians And Creation Care, Jo Ann Davidson
Needed: A More “Worldly Attitude” Christians And Creation Care, Jo Ann Davidson
Journal of the Adventist Theological Society
The following biblical study will not deal with text-critical issues. The Christian canon will be accepted as a “system of truth”—as Dr. Colin Peckham eloquently contends: The Bible is a unique phenomenon, wholly unrivaled in the world of letters. It is a literary marvel, a moral miracle. It is not the product of one editor who chose his contributors, mapped out his course of study, gave each his assignment and then brought them all together in a neatly bound volume. Its writing is as diverse as can possibly be imagined. The vast differences in every aspect of its production are …
Is Babylon The Papacy In The Book Of Revelation?, Edwin E. Reynolds
Is Babylon The Papacy In The Book Of Revelation?, Edwin E. Reynolds
Journal of the Adventist Theological Society
One of the widely misunderstood symbols in the book of Revelation is that of Babylon, portrayed in the book both as the Great City and the Prostitute/Harlot/Whore.1 Many preterist interpreters believe that Babylon represents the pagan Roman empire in the time of John.2 Other preterists teach that the Harlot is old Jerusalem.3 Many futurists believe that Babylon may have derived its imagery from the ancient Roman power but it represents some corrupt future power that will produce the eschatological Antichrist.4 Idealist interpreters of Revelation have a variety of views regarding Babylon, but most tend to view Babylon as representative of …
Appearances, Appearances: First Impressions Of Young David In 1 Samuel 16:12; 17:42, Mary Katherine Hom-Smith, Oliver Glanz
Appearances, Appearances: First Impressions Of Young David In 1 Samuel 16:12; 17:42, Mary Katherine Hom-Smith, Oliver Glanz
Journal of the Adventist Theological Society
But the LORD said to Samuel, “Do not consider his appearance or his height, for I have rejected him. The LORD does not look at the things human beings look at. People look at the outward appearance, but the LORD looks at the heart” (1 Sam 16:7 TNIV). . . . So he sent and had him brought in. He was glowing with health and had a fine appearance and handsome features. Then the LORD said, “Rise and anoint him; this is the one” (1 Sam 16:12 TNIV). . . . He looked David over and saw that he was …
The Meaning Of The Fear Of God: The Crucial Notion Of The Everlasting Gospel– A Biblical Study, Jiří Moskala
The Meaning Of The Fear Of God: The Crucial Notion Of The Everlasting Gospel– A Biblical Study, Jiří Moskala
Journal of the Adventist Theological Society
The first imperative of the everlasting Gospel as described in Rev 14:6–13 is plainly expressed: “Fear God” (Greek: fobethete ton theon). The context of this command is the announcement of God’s judgment which leads to three imperatives. The notion of fearing God plays a primary role among these commands: “Fear God and give him glory, because the hour of his judgment has come. Worship him who made the heavens, the earth, the sea and the springs of water” (Rev 14:7 NIV). This shocking command is disturbing for at least five reasons: 1. Itsounds negative and may produce a phobic reaction. …
Gender, Anthropology, And Sexuality In New Testament Perspective: Implications For Transgenderism, Larry L. Lichtenwalter
Gender, Anthropology, And Sexuality In New Testament Perspective: Implications For Transgenderism, Larry L. Lichtenwalter
Journal of the Adventist Theological Society
In April, 2017, the members of the General Conference of Seventh-day Adventist Executive Committee voted to accept a “Statement on Transgenderism.”1 Reactions reported from the floor as well as published responses underscore the controversial and personal nature of the subject. 2 When we talk about transgenderism we are talking about people. When a face (person) is attached to the word “transgender,” it abruptly becomes something very personal, undeniably real, and extremely complex. The intensely personal realities of human internal crisis are highlighted in the rise of transgender issues to social and medical prominence in our changing culture.3 It can be …
Two Models Of Inspiration?: The Challenge Of The Old Testament Narratives, Bernard White
Two Models Of Inspiration?: The Challenge Of The Old Testament Narratives, Bernard White
Journal of the Adventist Theological Society
"...it is not that the “two-model” view is wrong in seeking to show that inspiration was not always functioning in the same way in the biblical authors. It is simply that it is inadequate: the research model cannot be applied wholesale to the non-prophetic books, even to narratives alone. Short of declaring many of the OT narratives to be fiction, it therefore seems necessary to posit that certain of them, or sections of them, were supernaturally revealed to the authors. The prophetic model, in other words, is far more widespread a phenomenon of Scripture than the “two-model” view would suggest. …
Atonement In Revelation—Part I: Love, Substitution, Liberation, Doxology, Larry L. Lichtenwalter
Atonement In Revelation—Part I: Love, Substitution, Liberation, Doxology, Larry L. Lichtenwalter
Journal of the Adventist Theological Society
"Two broad understandings of what atonement signifies in Revelation compete for primacy: 1) whether atonement in Revelation “signifies primarily a sacrificial death that expiates sin and puts humanity right with God”;17 or 2) whether it refers to “the larger cosmological significance of Christ’s death as it relates to the overcoming of evil and the working out of God’s purposes on earth.”18 The former would see atonement as substitutionary19 and thus relating to realities of human sin and the need for personal redemption. This includes both objective and subjective aspects of atonement. The latter would be revelatory, relating primarily to questions …
Israel As The People Of The Covenant And Dispensationalism: A Biblical Evaluation, Ikechukwu Michael Oluikpe, Kim Papaioanou
Israel As The People Of The Covenant And Dispensationalism: A Biblical Evaluation, Ikechukwu Michael Oluikpe, Kim Papaioanou
Journal of the Adventist Theological Society
"This article ... is divided into four sections. The first two will survey the biblical context of Israel as God’s covenant people and its implications for the Gentiles in the OT and NT respectively. The third will briefly present the basic theology of Dispensationalism as it relates to Israel and the Church. The fourth will give a biblical evaluation of Dispensationalism’s basic tenets and theology in the light of the covenant theme."
Martin Luther And Extra Ecclesiam Nulla Salus (“Outside Of The Church There Is No Salvation”): Did Luther Really Abandon Cyprian?, Darius Jankiewicz
Martin Luther And Extra Ecclesiam Nulla Salus (“Outside Of The Church There Is No Salvation”): Did Luther Really Abandon Cyprian?, Darius Jankiewicz
Journal of the Adventist Theological Society
"... careful study of the Luther’s writings reveals that, while he repudiated many Catholic ways of understanding and conducting church, and while he attempted to harmonize ecclesiastical structures and sacramental theology with the foundational principles of Protestantism, he was essentially unable to break away from medieval modes of thinking. Notwithstanding his rejection of the Catholic emphasis on the visible church, he struggled to free himself from reliance on institutional structures for salvation. Ultimately, Luther affirmed the necessity of the visible church for salvation. In His wisdom, Luther believed, God had decreed the church to be the means of grace, without …
The Controverted Little Book Of Revelation 10 And The Shape Of Apocalyptic Mission, George R. Knight
The Controverted Little Book Of Revelation 10 And The Shape Of Apocalyptic Mission, George R. Knight
Journal of the Adventist Theological Society
"If the contents of the little book of Revelation 10 are controverted, someone forgot to tell the founders of Seventh-day Adventism. William Miller, for example, in 1841 interpreted the little book that would be sweet in the mouth as being opened in 1798 as evidenced by the increased study of Daniel’s prophecies stimulated by events related to the French Revolution and the taking of the Pope captive by General Berthier. And Ellen White couldn’t have been more certain. “The book that was sealed,” she wrote in 1896, “was not the book of Revelation, but that portion of the prophecy of …
Death As Sleep: The (Mis)Use Of A Biblical Metaphor, William Paroschi
Death As Sleep: The (Mis)Use Of A Biblical Metaphor, William Paroschi
Journal of the Adventist Theological Society
"The SDA view on what happens at death has been sometimes misunderstood; first, because the way we ourselves have occasionally used the sleep metaphor to describe death and, second, as a result of the dualistic connotation traditionally associated with soul-sleep. It could be argued that this comes from a reading of Adventist literature unmindful of the larger context of biblical anthropology in which these statements are made. This, however, is no excuse for not making every effort to express our understanding of the subject as clearly and completely as possible. Sleep is not a description of the nature of death. …
The Adventist Pilgrim: A Construct For Theological Reflection, Erik C. Carter
The Adventist Pilgrim: A Construct For Theological Reflection, Erik C. Carter
Journal of the Adventist Theological Society
"Adventist historians and tour guides refer to site visits using words like “living experience,” “spiritual reflection,” and “sacred space,” but these terms are not adequately engaged, thus rendering them abstract and relegating them to the background. Michael Campbell suggests, for example, that those who participate in an Adventist historical site visit are “personally confronted with the reality of God’s continued leading.” But what exactly does this mean, and perhaps more importantly, how does it happen? We need a more systematic way of connecting these places with our own experience, laden with personal meaning. The purpose of this brief study is …
The Meaning Of The Intercessory Ministry Of Jesus Christ On Our Behalf In The Heavenly Sanctuary, Jiri Moskala Thd, Phd
The Meaning Of The Intercessory Ministry Of Jesus Christ On Our Behalf In The Heavenly Sanctuary, Jiri Moskala Thd, Phd
Journal of the Adventist Theological Society
"Christ’s intercessory ministry is twofold: He reveals God’s character and His values to humanity, and presents our needs, struggles, and issues to God. The Triune God closely collaborates in this double mission. A decision for Jesus Christ means complete salvation—eternal life (Heb 7:25), and He is always ready to help (1 John 2:1; 1:8-9)."
The Faithful And True Witness Of Revelation 1:5 And 3:14, S. Joseph Kidder
The Faithful And True Witness Of Revelation 1:5 And 3:14, S. Joseph Kidder
Journal of the Adventist Theological Society
"Since the concept of witnessing is very broad in the Bible, I have limited this article to six: in ed and martys, in Psalm 89, in Isaiah 40-55, in the Johannine writing, in faithfulness, and in the character of God. The main emphasis throughout this article is on how each category enhances our understanding of the meaning and use of the phrase the “faithful and true witness” in Revelation."
Misinterpreted End-Time Issues: Five Myths In Adventism, Jiri Moskala Thd, Phd
Misinterpreted End-Time Issues: Five Myths In Adventism, Jiri Moskala Thd, Phd
Journal of the Adventist Theological Society
"realize that my unpleasant Christian experience was built on five misunderstandings which assumed that the Bible and/or the Spirit of Prophecy: (1) teach that believers will only receive the seal of God at the end of time; (2) stand against the assurance of salvation; (3) affirm that living believers can be called and examined in the pre-advent judgment at any time; (4) proclaim that after the close of probation the Holy Spirit will be removed from the earth meaning that even believers will be without any supernatural help; and (5) declare that believers in Jesus Christ will be on their …
“They Will Be Like Angels.” Paradise Without Marriage?, Rene Gehring
“They Will Be Like Angels.” Paradise Without Marriage?, Rene Gehring
Journal of the Adventist Theological Society
"This article deals with Jesus’ statement that “in the resurrection they neither marry nor are given in marriage, but are like angels in heaven” (Matt 22:30; Mark 12:25; cf. Luke 20:34-36) and a possible biblical rationale for the abolishment of this originally Edenic institution in the new paradise."
Isaiah’S Messiah: Adventist Identity For The Last Days, Stephane Beaulieu
Isaiah’S Messiah: Adventist Identity For The Last Days, Stephane Beaulieu
Journal of the Adventist Theological Society
This article proposes that Isaiah’s Messiah is the essence of Adventism and is what Adventists must proclaim in the eschaton. Portraits of the Messiah and His work for the people of God permeate the book of Isaiah. And while Isaiah’s Messiah was relevant for the people of the seventh century, the Messiah is portrayed as the One who will deliver and save His people now as well as then. In fact, Isaiah places his message of the Messiah in the realm of the last days.
God And “Gods” — Poetic Ambiguity And Wordplay: A Proposal Towards A Better Understanding Of Ps 82, Dragoslava Santrac
God And “Gods” — Poetic Ambiguity And Wordplay: A Proposal Towards A Better Understanding Of Ps 82, Dragoslava Santrac
Journal of the Adventist Theological Society
The purpose of this article is twofold: 1) to attempt to demonstrate deliberate poetic ambiguity in Ps 82, and 2) to show that deliberate poetic ambiguity in Ps 82, if it exists, is not simply an expression of the poet’s artistic creativity, but conveys also the theological message of the psalm. The following steps are undertaken to meet this purpose: 1) briefly look at the main interpretations of the psalm, 2) discuss the literary technique of poetic ambiguity in the Psalms, 3) discern possible poetic ambiguity in the psalm, and 4) understand Ps 82 theologically in the light of deliberate …
Human Reason And Biblical Hermeneutics: An Introduction, Angel Manuel Rodriguez
Human Reason And Biblical Hermeneutics: An Introduction, Angel Manuel Rodriguez
Journal of the Adventist Theological Society
"It is our intention to explore some of the issues involved in the use of reason in a hermeneutics that seeks to properly interpret the Scripture. This is necessary in an intellectual context where reason, in spite of postmodernism, remains the omnipotent ruler of knowledge. I will approach the assignment as a Christian who believes that God is the Creator and Redeemer and that He has revealed to us the fundamental elements and concepts necessary to find meaning in life and in the world in which live. The content of this revelation, preserved for us in the Holy Scripture, should …
