Ignatian Leadership In Action: Student Tested, St. Ignatius Approved, Kaitlin Kelsey

Immersion Pedagogy For Ignatian Leadership: The Creighton Haddix Dean’S Fellows, Thomas M. Kelly, Jennifer Moss Breen Nov 2020

Immersion Pedagogy For Ignatian Leadership: The Creighton Haddix Dean’S Fellows, Thomas M. Kelly, Jennifer Moss Breen

Jesuit Higher Education: A Journal

There are times and places where learning can be heightened. The proliferation of high-impact pedagogies attests to this. International immersions, done with intentionality, reflection, and follow-up, can be times and places where theories and concepts move from the abstract to the real. Immersion experiences in poor and marginalized communities are also where Ignatian leadership can be understood more profoundly, largely because of the values and commitments of Ignatius of Loyola and the spirituality that emerged from his life.

Second, I illustrate how principles of Ignatian leadership could be used in other undergraduate classrooms, offering additional units including Ignatian Charisms, the Examen, Downward Mobility/Living Simply, and Discernment that includes a “Personal Manifesto” based on Pedro …

Jesuit Colleges Meet Market Forces: How Ought We To Respond?, Anamaria Conley, Aimee Wheaton Nov 2020

Jesuit Colleges Meet Market Forces: How Ought We To Respond?, Anamaria Conley, Aimee Wheaton

Jesuit Higher Education: A Journal

Jesuit higher education is struggling to respond to changes in market conditions while maintaining its mission. Fiscal pressures arise from declining public support for higher education and increased competition. New technologies are enabling e-learning and distance learning environments, often in a for-profit context. Institutions of higher education are adapting to these external pressures in part by changing the work conditions of faculty. The challenge for Jesuit institutions is to ensure their response to the increasingly complex environment is consistent with Jesuit values. This paper focuses on the tensions caused by changing market conditions, faculty work conditions, and the Jesuit mission.

Ignatian-Centered And Appreciative Advising: Supporting The Holistic Development Of Students In 15-Minute Intervals, Joseph Defeo Ph.D., Bridget Keegan Ph.D.

Jesuit Higher Education: A Journal

Abstract

Ignatian pedagogy offers a powerful vision and methodology for learning and for life. The majority of work devoted to Ignatian pedagogy focuses on its integration into the traditional curriculum and classroom. However, as many educators are aware, learning, reflection, and self-discovery continue after and between courses and class meetings. Here the role of the faculty or staff advisor is essential, providing continuity and longer-term accompaniment for the student over the course of his or her educational career. This essay examines how Ignatian pedagogy builds upon and enhances secular theories of advising and how Ignatian pedagogy can inform advising relationships. …

Discerning Leaders: Forming Jesuit Higher Education Administrators And Faculty In The Ignatian Tradition, Joseph A. Defeo

Jesuit Higher Education: A Journal

Abstract

The need for good leadership is essential for any institution to be successful over the long term. In our current context, many months into a pandemic (Covid-19), the rising awareness, anger, pain and frustration of racial inequalities that are becoming more public and part of the national conversation, and the wide-ranging uncertainty of so many areas that make both short and long-term planning extraordinarily challenging, the need for good leaders is even more important. Leaders in Jesuit higher education face the same societal challenges as any other institution of higher education. Jesuit higher education, however, whose mission is grounded …

Ignatian Leadership And The Contemporary Leadership Landscape An Exercise In Counter-Cultural Engagement, Thomas M. Kelly, Jennifer Moss Breen

Jesuit Higher Education: A Journal

This paper is written as a dialogue between two faculty members and scholars working within a Jesuit institution. Through their shared interest in leadership, especially an interest in Ignatian Leadership, the following dialogue has emerged. Kelly works in our institution as a theologian and former director of academic service-learning, and Moss-Breen works in the graduate school directing an interdisciplinary leadership EdD program. Their backgrounds and fields are different, but their interest in the leadership of Ignatius is a common thread between them. Kelly starts the conversation and Moss Breen responds in kind.

Ignatian Leadership And Place-Based Learning, Rebecca Murray Nov 2020

Ignatian Leadership And Place-Based Learning, Rebecca Murray

Jesuit Higher Education: A Journal

In An Ignatian Method of City Dwelling (2011) John M. Staudenmaier, SJ notes thatIgnatius teaches that prayer is geographical at its core.” On his own journey of leadership, Ignatius himself learned much about the lives of others, and of himself, through the particular places he visited (often for much longer than he intended). By focusing on a specific geography, place-based community engagement can foster Ignatian leadership as it encourages faculty, staff and students to journey with a community in their own home. Because this unique way of engaging the community emphasizes depth of engagement over breadth, it is …

This article highlights the various elements of the Ignatian worldview, as outlined by Superior General Peter-Hans Kolvenbach in his 1989 address. Drawing upon contemporary social science theorists, it illustrates the relevance of his remarks for today’s Jesuit institutions of higher education, especially as they undertake a critical consideration of race, gender and class in shaping Ignatian leaders for a more just, humane and sustainable world.
