Nurses And International Service Work: Do Short-Term Trips Really Make A Difference?, Stephanie Matthew Sep 2025

Nurses And International Service Work: Do Short-Term Trips Really Make A Difference?, Stephanie Matthew

International Nursing Research Congress (INRC)

Introduction: Nursing students often have international service-learning (ISL) experiences (Huang et al., 2020; McClure et al., 2020; McKinnon et al., 2022). ISL often includes ethical concerns (Claire et al., 2022; Greig et al., 2022; Rowthorn et al., 2019). Additionally, we do not have strong studies linking ISL to effects on nursing practice later. Many trips show short-term benefits for nurses, but it is unclear whether ISL will improve patient care at home later (Wu et al., 2020).

Purpose Statement: The purpose of this study was to explore the reflections of registered nurses to discover how past ISL influence their current …

Medical equipment and medications are notably scarce for pediatric patients (Hughes et al., 2022), and availability of access to care for adolescents is also deficient (Hassan et al., 2020). Attempts …

Developing Cultural Competence In Practicing Nurses: A Qualitative Inquiry, Michelle L. Edmonds, Jeane Richards Jun 2017

Developing Cultural Competence In Practicing Nurses: A Qualitative Inquiry, Michelle L. Edmonds, Jeane Richards

International Nursing Research Congress (INRC)

Background/Introduction: Multicultural societies are becoming more prevalent across the globe. Nurses, providing holistic care to patients from many cultures, must demonstrate culturally competency in their daily practice so as to provide patient-centered care (Maher-Lorentz, 2008). The American Nurses Association has, since 1991, advocated for culturally appropriate nursing care to be delivered to patients in all settings (ANA, 1991). The Joint Commission has indicated the importance of culturally appropriate communication for patient-centered care and included this in the 2012 accreditation standards (The Joint Commission, 2010). Research regarding culturally-competent care among nursing students has been recently conducted in nursing education. However, few …

Knowledge Of Hiv/Aids Among Women In Rural Ugandan Villages, Linda S. Johanson Jun 2017

Knowledge Of Hiv/Aids Among Women In Rural Ugandan Villages, Linda S. Johanson

International Nursing Research Congress (INRC)

Purpose: Rates of HIV have been decreasing in Uganda, however these rates, attributed to behavior change through education, have slowed in recent years (Hearst, Kajubi, Hudges, Maganda, and Green, 2012). It is unclear how much education about this issue reaches remote rural villages in the country of Uganda, and how the condition is understood by the people who live there. Women in sub-saharan Africa have a disproportionate risk for HIV infection (Harrison, 2014). Basic correct understanding of the transmission, risk, symptoms, and treatment for HIV/AIDS will impact prevention behaviors for women in this country. Ultimately control of HIV/AIDS impacts global …

Session presented on Friday, July 22, 2016:

Background: A competent workforce committed to providing patient-centered care is vital since retention and turnover rates of direct care staff in skilled nursing facilities are directly related to quality of patient care (Austrom et al, 2015). Turnover and retention rates can become extremely challenged when a workforce is in crisis. Following the 2010 devastating earthquake in Haiti, 31 skilled nursing facilities in Florida and Georgia actively engaged in providing support to Haitian employees and their families both in USA and Haiti. Administrators, leaders and line staff participated in the support and relief efforts …

Hope And Wellbeing Among Belizeans, Tauna Fleming Gulley Mar 2016

Hope And Wellbeing Among Belizeans, Tauna Fleming Gulley

International Nursing Research Congress (INRC)

Session presented on Sunday, July 26, 2015: Purpose: The purpose of most medical mission trips is to instill hope among the hopeless and foster physical, emotional and spiritual wellness among the population served. This objective is difficult to achieve during short-term missions. However, instilling hope in those who are hopeless is possible when there are others willing to intervene during the time period between medical mission team visits. By obtaining a better understanding of the subjective wellbeing of the population served, providers can further explore the nature of the satisfaction or dissatisfaction that is informing the subjective wellbeing of the …

Development Of An Evidence-Based Resource Guide For Nurses On Medical Missions In Developing Countries, Natalie Ann Masco Oct 2013

Development Of An Evidence-Based Resource Guide For Nurses On Medical Missions In Developing Countries, Natalie Ann Masco

International Nursing Research Congress (INRC)

Session presented on: Thursday, July 25, 2013:

Background: In 2007, an estimated 1.6 million Americans were sent on international short-term medical missions by more than 40,000 sending entities (churches, agencies, schools, etc.) at a cost of three billion dollars (Tazelaar, 2011). Many arguments about the utility and effectiveness of short-term medical missions exist in the literature. While professionals who take part in the trips do so to help others, without proper preparation and education on medical conditions and cultural needs there is a risk for causing more harm than good. Without training, volunteers will be psychologically and culturally unprepared to …

Students' Reflections Of A Global Service-Learning Experience, Alice L. March, Marilyn Handley Oct 2013

Students' Reflections Of A Global Service-Learning Experience, Alice L. March, Marilyn Handley

International Nursing Research Congress (INRC)

Session presented on: Wednesday, July 24, 2013:

Purpose: Educating nurses for today's global healthcare environment requires providing unique learning experiences designed to foster the development of cultural competence. This may be enhanced by cultural immersion. Not only are students face-to-face with actual health problems, but they are imbedded in the very culture that has produced those alterations, and can clearly observe the proscriptions and prescriptions that will directly and indirectly affect health teaching and care. A service-learning framework, highlighting healthcare, culture, and spirituality guided learning and reflective journal entries of undergraduate nursing students participating in a medical mission spearheaded by …
