A significant proportion of adults in the United States (US) suffer from various inflammatory chronic conditions (ICCs). They include a wide range of diseases such as diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis, asthma, and chronic obstructive pulmonary diseases. ICCs are not curable, and their management typically involves medications such as NSAIDs and corticosteroids. Recently, a whole health approach that places patients’ well-being at the center is increasingly being used for better management of ICCs. The whole health approach uses an integrated approach that includes multimodal management with complementary and alternative medicines (CAM) and prescription drugs. This dissertation traces the debates concerning the professionalization of medicine in America across the 19th- and well into the 20th-century and explores how the debates concerning professionalization in any given moment affected popular literary forms. Using Fredric Jameson’s The Political Unconscious as its theoretical framework, this dissertation’s chapters on the gothic, realism, naturalism, and satire trace each mode’s dominant hegemonic position on this issue while showcasing dissenting voices across this century-long discourse. Introduction: Inflammation is often a component of chronic pain, yet its potential role in fibromyalgia syndrome (FMS) remains inconclusive. FMS is a complex chronic pain condition affecting ~2% of the population; management is challenging and treatment options remain limited. Many herbs contain anti-inflammatory properties, and herbs indicated for analgesia and rheumatic conditions have traditionally been used in Appalachia. Many women have risk factors that can increase their risk for developing breast cancer. These women may benefit from recommendations based on their personal and family history. Women at increased risk may experience higher levels of anxiety, depression, or cancer worry than women who are at average or only slightly increased risk. A study to evaluate lamb production under organic management was carried out in 2003 and 2004 at the West Virginia University Organic Research Farm. About 0.93 ha of tall fescue-orchard grass-red clover grassland was assigned to three blocks based on soil type, slope and previous treatment. Each block was divided into two main plots and assigned the following treatments: One was fertilized with compost while the other received no fertilizer. While there is evidence in the literature of herbal supplement education in other disciplines, inclusion in dental hygiene curricula is not reported. The purpose of this study was to assess the prevalence and extent of herbal supplement education in the 256 accredited dental hygiene programs in the United States. A survey was sent to program directors. Data analyses, including frequencies, cumulative frequencies, percentages, analyses of variance, and test of Chi Square were conducted using JMP program. Surveys revealed 63% of respondents (n = 160) included herbal supplement education and primarily incorporated it in the pharmacology course (67%). Statistically significant differences …

The purpose of this study was to determine how West Virginian's perceive and use complementary medicine. The first objective was to determine the frequency of respondents who had used at least one complementary therapy in the last year. The second objective was to determine the most commonly used complementary therapies among respondents.
