Conservation Education: Using Birds To Connect Communities To Their Natural Environment, Kathryn A. Olson
Conservation Education: Using Birds To Connect Communities To Their Natural Environment, Kathryn A. Olson
Graduate Student Portfolios, Professional Papers, and Capstone Projects
The theme of my portfolio is conservation education, using birds as an example of how to connect people of all ages to their natural environment. Birds were chosen as an example because of a personal curiosity for the animal, and because they are an accessible and tangible element of nature for all people, urban and rural. The first component is a Curriculum Development Guide created for the Wings Over Water program of the Montana Natural History Center. It synthesizes scientific research on Ospreys, relates central themes of the literature to Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) and provides inventive activity ideas …
Increasing Environmental Education Accessibility Through New Media, Farrah Masoumi
Increasing Environmental Education Accessibility Through New Media, Farrah Masoumi
Graduate Student Portfolios, Professional Papers, and Capstone Projects
This portfolio shows projects that aim to create a larger outreach for environmental education through digital education content and expand already existing programs to enhance the learning and teaching experience. All of these components highlight the integration between environmental education and new media. By being based online, where many people spend their time, it can serve as a tool to get people outside. Audiences can learn more about the environment they are a part of and give them the power and knowledge to make changes to become more responsible global citizens in their day to day lives.
Governor Steve Bullock's "Great Equalizers": How The Narrative Paradigm Translates Progressive Initiatives To Conservative Audiences, Kelsie Lynn Severson
Governor Steve Bullock's "Great Equalizers": How The Narrative Paradigm Translates Progressive Initiatives To Conservative Audiences, Kelsie Lynn Severson
Graduate Student Portfolios, Professional Papers, and Capstone Projects
Montana Democratic Governor Steve Bullock won his re-election in 2016 despite a national conservative groundswell, in a state where Donald Trump also won by twenty points. Bullock would be labeled a very moderate Governor. However, he has accomplished several progressive steps forward for policy decisions in the state of Montana that include campaign finance reform, and Montana Medicaid expansion. This has led to national interest of Bullock’s success in campaigning and governing. While Bullock only just barely won both his gubernatorial bids, and has only accomplished some of his progressive goals, his rhetorical strategies that focus on narrative as a …
Encouraging Discourse In High School Mathematics, Sarah Piper
Encouraging Discourse In High School Mathematics, Sarah Piper
Graduate Student Portfolios, Professional Papers, and Capstone Projects
The Common Core State Standards in Mathematics increased the emphasis on the skills of reasoning, justifying, and critiquing. Mathematics educators have struggled to meet this requirement, as it requires a distinct shift in classroom culture that both students and teachers find challenging. Visibly random groupings have been suggested as a way to effect a change in classroom norms, as students are asked to work with all members of the class. They thus learn to share their ideas as well as offer feedback on the thinking of other classroom participants. Students in three high school geometry classrooms were observed in an …
Second Wind, Anne A. Yoncha
Second Wind, Anne A. Yoncha
Graduate Student Portfolios, Professional Papers, and Capstone Projects
Second Wind is a kinetic, responsive art installation which examines invisible processes taking place in and around a Ponderosa pine tree. Wind speed data, measured at 20', 25', 30', 35', and 40' in the canopy of a Ponderosa on the University of Montana campus, is translated into the gallery in real time using two Raspberry Pi single-board computers. This data determines the velocity of five fans in the gallery. Each fan interacts with a suspended vellum paper structure which moves more or less depending on wind speed. The vellum is painted with an ink made of fermented pine needles from …
Group Development In Natural Resource Collaboration In The Crown Of The Continent: Forming, Storming, Norming & Performing, Meghan Rene Neville
Group Development In Natural Resource Collaboration In The Crown Of The Continent: Forming, Storming, Norming & Performing, Meghan Rene Neville
Graduate Student Portfolios, Professional Papers, and Capstone Projects
This portfolio brings together three experiences of natural resource collaborative groups each in a different stage of development. Researcher, Bruce Tuckman, theorized that collaborative groups go through different stages in order to grow, face new challenges, tackle problems, deliver results, and become an effective team (1965). These stages of development are called Forming, Storming, Norming, and Performing. The application of Bruce Tuckman’s model can help both collaborative organizers and outsiders appreciate the complex dynamics of collaborative groups. The overarching goal for my portfolio is to provide new ways to examine natural resource collaborative groups, so that there is a better …
