Patterns Of Motion: Discovery And Generalized Representation, Imran Saleemi Jan 2011

Patterns Of Motion: Discovery And Generalized Representation, Imran Saleemi

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In this dissertation, we address the problem of discovery and representation of motion patterns in a variety of scenarios, commonly encountered in vision applications. The overarching goal is to devise a generic representation, that captures any kind of object motion observable in video sequences. Such motion is a significant source of information typically employed for diverse applications such as tracking, anomaly detection, and action and event recognition. We present statistical frameworks for representation of motion characteristics of objects, learned from tracks or optical flow, for static as well as moving cameras, and propose algorithms for their application to a variety …

A Game Theoretic Approach In Green Supply Chain Management, Hong Shi Jan 2011

A Game Theoretic Approach In Green Supply Chain Management, Hong Shi

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Common social issues are usually criticized considering the potential interrelationship between corporate social responsibility (CSR) and supply chain management. Companies and manufacturers in supply chain networks have been pressured by a growing concern for CSR from governments, organizations, and consumer, and have to bear at least some CSR under policies and regulations. However, naturally, members in a decentralized supply chain network make decisions to maximize their individual net profits. This thesis aims to allocate CSR to members in a non-integrated supply chain over time. Specifically, we formulate a model that crosses through multi-periods by a dynamic discreet Stackelberg game. We …

Free Surface Confinement Effects On A Round Jet, Jiahao Tian Jan 2011

Free Surface Confinement Effects On A Round Jet, Jiahao Tian

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In this study, the characteristics of a round turbulent jet in the vicinity of a free surface are investigated. The results reveal that the velocity normal to the free surface is diminished, and the velocity components parallel to the free surface are enhanced in the region near the free surface. The magnitude of shear stress in the vertical central plane of the surface jet is smaller than that noticed in the free jet near the free surface, while the magnitudes of profiles are larger compared to that of the free jet. A higher magnitude of the vorticity is observed in …

Electimize A New Evolutionary Algorithm For Optimization With Applications In Construction Engineering, Raheem, Mohamed Abdel Jan 2011

Electimize A New Evolutionary Algorithm For Optimization With Applications In Construction Engineering, Raheem, Mohamed Abdel

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Optimization is considered an essential step in reinforcing the efficiency of performance and economic feasibility of construction projects. In the past few decades, evolutionary algorithms (EAs) have been widely utilized to solve various types of construction-related optimization problems due to their efficiency in finding good solutions in relatively short time periods. However, in many cases, these existing evolutionary algorithms failed to identify the optimal solution to several optimization problems. As such, it is deemed necessary to develop new approaches in order to help identify better-quality solutions. This doctoral research presents the development of a new evolutionary algorithm, named “Electimize,” that …

Source Node Expansion Algorithm For Coherency Based Islanding Of Power Systems, Issah Ibrahim Jan 2011

Source Node Expansion Algorithm For Coherency Based Islanding Of Power Systems, Issah Ibrahim

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The electric power system is an exposed man-made structure susceptible to wide arrays of disturbance. If not cleared, a lingering disturbance can plunge the system into the unstable mode in a fairly short time frame. In distributed generation, a drawn-out perturbation can cause system components to operate under unacceptable conditions. When restoration controls fail to revive the troubled system, generators may lose synchronism causing them to swing haphazardly in groups. This crisis separates the power system into unbalanced regions called islands. In this thesis, Source Node Expansion Algorithm based on Slow Coherency has been proposed to resolve unintentional islanding. The algorithm …

Development Of Manufacturing Cells Using An Artificial Ant-Based Algorithm With Different Similarity Coefficients, Mohammed Taboun Jan 2011

Development Of Manufacturing Cells Using An Artificial Ant-Based Algorithm With Different Similarity Coefficients, Mohammed Taboun

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Although there exists several ways of solving the cellular manufacturing problem, including several ant-based algorithms, many of these algorithms focus on obtaining the best possible answer instead of efficiency. An existing artificial-ant based algorithm AntClass, was modified so that it is easier to manipulate. AntClass uses Euclidean vectors to measure the similarity between parts, because similarity is used to group parts together instead of distances, the modified version uses similarity coefficients. The concept of heaping clusters was also introduced to ant algorithms for cellular manufacturing. Instead of using Euclidean vectors to measure the distance to the center of a heap, …

A Study Of Cross-Flow Air Heating Via A Multiport Serpentine Microchannel Heat Exchanger, Faisal Siddiqui Jan 2011

A Study Of Cross-Flow Air Heating Via A Multiport Serpentine Microchannel Heat Exchanger, Faisal Siddiqui

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

An experimental investigation is performed to determine air side forced convective heat transfer and flow characteristics of wavy fin, serpentine, multi-port slab, crossflow microchannel heat exchanger. Experiments are conducted for 30 different operating conditions in single-phase air-to-ethylene glycol crossflow configuration. These operating conditions (752 < Re_a < 3165, and 23C < T_a,i < 46.5C) yield air side Nusselt number (Nu_a), and Colburn factor (j_a) of up to 8.4 and 0.009 respectively. The Nu_a and j_a obtained in these experiments are generally higher, and friction factor, f_a is generally lower than those found in the literature. Possible explanations for the apparent discrepancies are explored. A thorough uncertainty analysis is performed. Uncertainties in Nu_a, j_a, and friction factor f_a are approximately 4.8%, 5.2%, and 5.8% respectively. A large number of key heat exchanger performance parameters are also investigated in order to develop general correlations suitable for industrial applications and engineers.

Fpga Implementation Of Blob Recognition, Jian Xiong Jan 2011

Fpga Implementation Of Blob Recognition, Jian Xiong

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Real-time embedded vision systems can be used in a wide range of applications and therefore the demand has been increasing for them. In this thesis, an FPGA-based embedded vision system capable of recognizing objects in real time is presented. The proposed system architecture consists of multiple Intellectual Properties (IPs), which are used as a set of complex instructions by an integrated 32-bit CPU Microblaze. Each IP is tailored specifically to meet the needs of the application and at the same time to consume the minimum FPGA logic resources. Integrating both hardware and software on a single FPGA chip, this system …

An Approach To Improve The Failure Rate Model Of A Solid State Laser By Utalizing The Physics Of Failure Methodology, Omar L. Thompson Jan 2011

An Approach To Improve The Failure Rate Model Of A Solid State Laser By Utalizing The Physics Of Failure Methodology, Omar L. Thompson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The ability to predict the failure rate of any military laser is very critical. In-field laser usage does not support the troubleshooting and repairing of a complex electro optical system. The only published laser failure rate model was last updated by the Department of Defense in 1975. Consequently, the failure rate predicted is inaccurate due to model deficiencies. This dissertation has developed a laser failure rate model for diode pumped lasers with improved failure rate prediction accuracy. The model has surpassed the capabilities of the Department of Defense model by the inclusion of key performance attributes that are currently not …
