Diversification Of Ghost Electric Fishes (Gymnotiformes, Apteronotidae) In Tropical South America: How Traits And Environmental Factors Constrain Macroevolutionary Diversification, Jonathan Gifford Allen

Doctoral Dissertations

Neotropical electric fishes (Apteronotidae) display remarkable phenotypic and ecological diversity, offering an exceptional system for studying macroevolutionary processes in freshwater environments. Here I investigate the morphological, ecological, and historical factors shaping diversification in the clade Navajini, with a focus on craniofacial evolution, species delimitation, and biogeographic patterns. First, using high-resolution micro-CT scans, 3D geometric morphometrics, and phylogenetic comparative methods, I analyze skull shape variation across Navajini. Key traits resulting from heterocephaly exhibit strong phylogenetic signal and reflect functional differentiation among genera. Sexual dimorphism contributes significantly to cranial disparity in some lineages, while others show conserved, modular patterns likely tied to …

An Exploration Of Variables Related To Gender Role Differences And Social Relationships Among Nontraditional Bachelor's Degree Recipients, Cynthia Bourgeois Bergeron

Doctoral Dissertations

The goal of this study was to examine variables that speak to gender role differences among nontraditional bachelor’s degree recipients aged 30 to 49. These issues are particularly relevant given enrollment trends showing that the diversification of bachelor’s degree seekers has outpaced the policies and norms of traditional undergraduate education. A nonexperimental, correlational research design was employed using chi-square tests and Cramer’s V as post-hoc measures on categorical data from the 2012, 2014, and 2016 General Social Survey. Shaped by Gilligan’s moral development theory, several social variables were included in the analysis. Two statistically significant associations emerged: women earning bachelor’s …

Investigations Of Carbon Dioxide Storage In Low-Temperature Reservoirs For Non-Leaking Storage, Md Nahin Mahmood Jun 2026

Investigations Of Carbon Dioxide Storage In Low-Temperature Reservoirs For Non-Leaking Storage, Md Nahin Mahmood

Doctoral Dissertations

Carbon dioxide (CO₂) injection into subsea or low-temperature water zones has emerged as a promising strategy for long-term, non-leaking CO₂ storage through the formation of solid hydrates. This research investigates CO₂ injection into Berea sandstone cores saturated with water under simulated subsea conditions, focusing on hydrate formation behavior across varying temperatures, pressures, and injection flow rates. Experimental results demonstrate that CO₂ hydrate formation under dynamic (flowing) conditions occurs at significantly higher pressure compared to static conditions reported previously. At temperatures ranging from 0 °C to 5 °C, dynamic hydrate formation pressures were observed to be approximately double. This can be …

Strang-Type Exponential Integrators For Stiff Reaction-Diffusion Systems, Saburi Tolulope Rasheed Jun 2026

Strang-Type Exponential Integrators For Stiff Reaction-Diffusion Systems, Saburi Tolulope Rasheed

Doctoral Dissertations

Reaction-diffusion systems, as examples of semilinear parabolic partial differential equations, have played significant roles in the mathematical modeling of physical, chemical, and biological processes. Several reaction-diffusion systems typically do not have exact solutions in closed form, and numerically solving them also comes with challenges due to the presence of the nonlinear local interaction/chemical reaction dynamics representing the reaction term, coupling between components, multidimensionality of the diffusion operator, and stiffness of the diffusion and/or reaction terms. Wederive and analyze several second-order accurate exponential integrators of the Strang type for the time discretization of stiff reaction-diffusion systems. We utilize the finite difference …

Building And Restoring Trust In Deep Learning: From Multimodal Sensing To Generative Synthesis And Model Integrity, Liqun Shan Jun 2026

Building And Restoring Trust In Deep Learning: From Multimodal Sensing To Generative Synthesis And Model Integrity, Liqun Shan

Doctoral Dissertations

Deep learning has become a foundational technology for modern intelligent systems used in sensing, authentication, media generation, and automated decision-making. As these systems are increasingly deployed in security- and privacy-sensitive settings, ensuring their trustworthiness has become a critical challenge. Yet deep learning models remain vulnerable to spoofed sensory inputs, synthetic media, and malicious behaviors hidden within trained networks. These vulnerabilities undermine reliability and raise serious concerns about whether such systems can be trusted under adversarial and deceptive scenarios. This dissertation investigates how to build and restore trust in deep learning across three tightly connected dimensions: multimodal sensing, generative authenticity, and …

A Qualitative Study Examining Teachers' Knowledge And Awareness In Recognizing The Characteristics Of Twice Exceptional Learners: An Underrepresented And Underserved Population, Adrianne Monique Williams

Doctoral Dissertations

Over the past 30 years, research on twice exceptional learners has been gradually increasing, however, knowledge and awareness of the information in the educational community have been slowly evolving (Bailey & Rose, 2011; Baum, 2004). Outwardly, twice exceptional students may present as typical. Still, they face many unique challenges that include academic achievement, social awkwardness, executive functioning deficits, social communication challenges, and teachers who are not aware and trained to meet the atypical needs of these students. Researchers and practitioners are becoming increasingly aware of the underrepresentation that plagues gifted and talented programs, especially concerning twice exceptional students, and students …

Multidomain Modeling And Ramp-Aware Forecasting Of Floating Photovoltaic Systems For Water-Energy Nexus Applications, Md Atiqur Rahaman Jun 2026

Multidomain Modeling And Ramp-Aware Forecasting Of Floating Photovoltaic Systems For Water-Energy Nexus Applications, Md Atiqur Rahaman

Doctoral Dissertations

Floating photovoltaic (FPV) systems have become a transformative renewable energy technology because of their cooling effects on PV performance and ability to prevent water evaporation in land-constrained areas. Although FPV systems have the potential to become a commercially viable technology, their large-scale deployment remains constrained by uncertainties in thermal behavior, sustainability, and grid-operational variability. This dissertation identifies and characterizes these three key issues and presents an integrated, measurement-based evaluation of a 130 kW FPV installation located at the Passaúna reservoir in Brazil. In the first contribution, four temperature models, including physical and empirical models, were developed and comparatively evaluated to …

The Promise And The Punishment: A Critical Analysis Of Pbis At The Intersection Of State Discipline Policies In Louisiana, Ashley D. Willis-Brooks Jun 2026

The Promise And The Punishment: A Critical Analysis Of Pbis At The Intersection Of State Discipline Policies In Louisiana, Ashley D. Willis-Brooks

Doctoral Dissertations

Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) emerged as a preventative instructional alternative to exclusionary and punitive school discipline practices emphasizing tiered systems of support, data-based decision making, and proactive behavioral instruction. Despite its strong theoretical foundation and widespread adoption, PBIS implementation has produced uneven outcomes, particularly in policy contexts where state discipline statutes continue to authorize exclusionary practices. In Louisiana, PBIS is promoted through state guidance as an evidence-based framework; however, governing discipline policies simultaneously permit suspension, expulsion, and zero-tolerance provisions. This coexistence raises critical questions regarding alignment, coherence, and equity within the state’s discipline system. The purpose of this …

Learning And Predicting The Performance Of Gradual Type System, Mohammad Wahiduzzaman Khan Jun 2026

Learning And Predicting The Performance Of Gradual Type System, Mohammad Wahiduzzaman Khan

Doctoral Dissertations

Gradual typing reconciles the complementary strengths of static and dynamic typing by allowing programmers to incrementally introduce type annotations while preserving the flexibility of dynamically typed code. This approach improves reliability, documentation, and tooling support without sacrificing rapid prototyping. To ensure soundness, gradual type systems enforce annotations through runtime checks, typically implemented via cast insertion. Although these checks guarantee correctness, they can introduce substantial and highly variable runtime overhead, making performance prediction and optimization a central challenge for practical adoption. Prior work has largely focused on coarse-grained (macro-level) configurations, where entire modules are either fully typed or untyped. While such …

Learning From Extremes: A Copula-Based Feature Selection Framework For Machine Learning-Driven Risk Prediction, Agnideep Aich Jun 2026

Learning From Extremes: A Copula-Based Feature Selection Framework For Machine Learning-Driven Risk Prediction, Agnideep Aich

Doctoral Dissertations

Reliable feature selection is crucial for building interpretable and practical risk models, particularly when decisions depend on identifying the highest-risk groups rather than relying on average trends. This dissertation presents and tests a supervised filter that ranks predictors by their upper-tail concordance with the outcome, using a Gumbel-implied upper-tail concordance score $\lambda_U$. The score is calculated from pseudo-observations and Kendall’s $\tau$ (via the Gumbel $\tau\mapsto\lambda_U$ mapping), does not require model fitting during selection, and focuses directly on joint extreme events, such as when both a predictor and the positive class are high. The method is compared to Mutual Information, mRMR, …

Investigating The Distribution And Origin Of Pitted Mounds On Mars Using Machine Learning-Based Mapping And Integrated Geological Analysis: Application To Isidis Planitia, Precious Batubo Jun 2026

Investigating The Distribution And Origin Of Pitted Mounds On Mars Using Machine Learning-Based Mapping And Integrated Geological Analysis: Application To Isidis Planitia, Precious Batubo

Doctoral Dissertations

Pitted mounds are widespread landforms across the northern plains of Mars, yet their origin remains uncertain. These features have been interpreted as possible expressions of subsurface fluid activity, including sedimentary volcanism, magmatic processes, or other fluid-assisted mechanisms. Determining their distribution, morphology, and geology is therefore important for understanding the evolution of subsurface hydrological processes and the planet’s potential for habitability. However, the large spatial extent of mound-bearing terrains makes comprehensive manual mapping impractical. This dissertation presents an automated approach to mound detection using Faster Region-Based Convolutional Neural Network (Faster R-CNN) from high-resolution Context Camera (CTX) images including morphometric and mineralogical …

Development Of Artificial Intelligence Based Geophysical Technique For Unconventional Resource Exploration, S M Shamsul Hoque

Doctoral Dissertations

Unconventional shale resources have become an important source of oil and gas in the United States, but their characterization remains challenging because of strong heterogeneity and complex elastic and geomechanical behavior. Important properties, such as total organic carbon (TOC) and brittleness, play a key role in evaluating source quality, reservoir behavior, development potential, and subsurface storage suitability. This dissertation develops artificial intelligence-based geophysical techniques to improve unconventional resource exploration and characterization by integrating seismic attributes, well-log data, deep learning, multicomponent seismic registration, and joint PP-PS inversion. A TOC estimation technique is developed and applied to both the Tuscaloosa Marine Shale …

Beyond A Corrective Experience: Reimagining Liberation In Special Education, Erin Elise Macnabb May 2026

Beyond A Corrective Experience: Reimagining Liberation In Special Education, Erin Elise Macnabb

Doctoral Dissertations

This qualitative study establishes a critical bridge between special education and liberatory pedagogy, positioning these historically siloed fields as interdependent for systemic justice. While Special Education Teachers (SETs) daily work involves resisting systemic oppression, special education has been historically excluded from liberatory pedagogy and instead focused on medicalized models and deficit based assumptions. The separation of liberatory pedagogy and special education contributes to professional siloing and a culture of compliance that prioritizes bureaucratic processes over the meaningful and radical work of SETs.

The research utilizes a qualitative design rooted in Collaborative Critical Inquiry (CCI) where an intentional sample of veteran, …

Black Athens: Organic Intellectuals And The Civil Rights Movement In Boston, 1920–1985, Raymond Dinsmore May 2026

Black Athens: Organic Intellectuals And The Civil Rights Movement In Boston, 1920–1985, Raymond Dinsmore

Doctoral Dissertations

This dissertation explores the history of Boston’s civil rights movement through the lives, ideas, and accomplishments of its most influential leaders within what this study terms “Black Athens.” Despite Boston’s reputation as a premier global center of intellect and thought leadership, its Black community has rarely received due recognition for its vital contributions to the city—and particularly to its twentieth-century freedom movement. While many historians have examined the political, social, and cultural dimensions of Boston’s freedom struggle and the broader civil rights movement, few have foregrounded its intellectual history. I argue that this omission has produced an incomplete understanding of both …

Computationally Probing Quantum Subgroups Via Graph Planar Algebra Embeddings, Caleb Kennedy Hill May 2026

Computationally Probing Quantum Subgroups Via Graph Planar Algebra Embeddings, Caleb Kennedy Hill

Doctoral Dissertations

Tensor categories are algebraic objects used by physicists to describe symmetry, by computer scientists to describe programs, and by logicians to describe theorem and proof. Mathematicians invented them to capture the similarities of the representation theories of common algebraic objects including groups, algebras, and Lie algebras. In this dissertation we give presentations in terms of graphical generators and relations for two tensor categories arising from the two quantum subgroups of quantum G2.

We accomplish this by embedding a tensor-generating object's planar algebra into the graph planar algebra on that object's module fusion graph. Such an embedding allows one to explore …

Permeability And Mechanical Response Of Propped Fractured Rocks Under Varied Fluid Viscosities, Hebatalla A. Ghoneim May 2026

Permeability And Mechanical Response Of Propped Fractured Rocks Under Varied Fluid Viscosities, Hebatalla A. Ghoneim

Doctoral Dissertations

Hydraulic fracturing relies on proppants to preserve fracture conductivity under reservoir stresses. The long-term performance of propped fractures is influenced by grain crushing, redistribution of fines, pack rearrangement, proppant–rock embedment, and shear deformation. These mechanisms are not fully understood under combined compression and shear stress paths, particularly when viscous carrier fluids interact with fractured rock and proppant packs. This dissertation provides experimental data and device development to characterize proppant and rock behavior relevant to these coupled mechanical and hydraulic processes.Proppant grain-scale strength and pack-scale mechanical response were first examined through uniaxial grain tests, crushing tests, and drained and undrained triaxial …

Leveraging Dna Intercalation For The Development Of Tunable, Versatile Supramolecular Hydrogels, Shaina Marlene Hughes May 2026

Leveraging Dna Intercalation For The Development Of Tunable, Versatile Supramolecular Hydrogels, Shaina Marlene Hughes

Doctoral Dissertations

Supramolecular hydrogels have emerged as a versatile class of biomaterials capable of mimicking the dynamic behavior of natural tissues due to their inherent hydrophilicity, stimuli-responsiveness, and viscoelastic behavior. However, achieving both biocompatibility and mechanical tunability remains a challenge. This work utilizes DNA intercalation to create a programmable, sustainable hydrogel platform. By utilizing the reversible insertion of planar aromatic molecules between DNA base pairs, we demonstrate that the network’s dissociation kinetics and thermodynamic response are directly governed by the intercalator structure, offering a highly tunable strategy for stimuli-responsive biomaterials. To demonstrate the versatility of double stranded DNA (dsDNA) intercalating supramolecular hydrogels (DISHs), …

Who Works From Home, What Is It Worth, And Where Do They Live? Occupational Classification, Work Arrangement Preferences, And Residential Location Choice, Logan Robert Malone May 2026

Who Works From Home, What Is It Worth, And Where Do They Live? Occupational Classification, Work Arrangement Preferences, And Residential Location Choice, Logan Robert Malone

Doctoral Dissertations

This dissertation examines work-from-home (WFH) arrangements through three complementary lenses: occupational feasibility, worker preferences, and residential location choice. The first chapter develops a continuous tools-based measure of WFH potential using the Department of Labor's O*NET Tools and Technology Supplement, which documents the tools used in each occupation. By categorizing tools according to their consistency with remote work and aggregating to the occupation level, I construct a measure that closely aligns with existing classifications while offering finer-grained distinctions than the binary categorizations common in the literature. The tools-based measure agrees with a widely cited task-based measure for approximately 80% of occupations …

The Bank Of North America And The Making Of American Public Finance In The Confederation Era, Arya Georgina Martinez Arellano May 2026

The Bank Of North America And The Making Of American Public Finance In The Confederation Era, Arya Georgina Martinez Arellano

Doctoral Dissertations

This dissertation examines the history of the Bank of North America, the first charteredbank in the United States, as a foundational experiment in American public finance during the critical decade between the American Revolution and the founding of the Bank of the United States in 1791. Historians have often interpreted the Bank either as an extension of Robert Morris's career or as a precursor to Alexander Hamilton’s federal financial system. By shifting the focus from individual actors to institutional practice, this project demonstrates how the Bank of North America functioned as a proto-national financial institution in a political environment where …

Performance-Based Assessment Of Asphalt Overlay Cracking With Laboratory And Field Data, Meisam Khorshidi May 2026

Performance-Based Assessment Of Asphalt Overlay Cracking With Laboratory And Field Data, Meisam Khorshidi

Doctoral Dissertations

Efficient and effective rehabilitation of existing pavements is a continuing priority for transportation agencies seeking to maintain safe, reliable, and cost-effective networks. Asphalt overlays are widely used to restore ride quality and extend service life of both asphalt and concrete pavements; however, their long-term performance is often limited by thermal and reflective cracking. These distresses accelerate moisture infiltration, increase maintenance demand, and shorten overlay life, especially in cold-climate regions. Ensuring that overlay designs adequately account for structural configuration, traffic, climate, subgrade conditions, and mixture-level fracture resistance is therefore critical to avoid premature failure and excessive life-cycle costs. This dissertation advances performance-based …

Bond Graph And Extended Generalized Average Method With Applications In Cyber-Physical Systems And Power Electronics, Arnold Anthony Fernandes

Doctoral Dissertations

"This research examines two applications of control theory. The first application considers the bond graph (BG) modeling technique, which is used to develop the MATLAB structural analysis toolbox (MATSAT), an open-source toolbox for sensor placement and qualitative system analysis that considers the observability and fault-detection capabilities of multi-domain cyberphysical systems. The toolbox provides information on redundant sensors, guiding the system designer in cost and security trade-offs. The toolbox uses traditional BG causality assignment procedures. Additionally, MATSAT provides optimal causality assignment methods that perform significantly better at assigning causality to BGs with increased junctions, sources, and simple meshes, without encountering causality …

Critical Parameters Controlling Oxide Scale Formation And Hydro-Descaling Efficiency During Steelmaking, Tochukwu Princewill Ojiako Jan 2026

Critical Parameters Controlling Oxide Scale Formation And Hydro-Descaling Efficiency During Steelmaking, Tochukwu Princewill Ojiako

Doctoral Dissertations

In modern steelmaking, cast slabs are exposed to high-temperature oxidizing environments during secondary cooling, reheating, and hot rolling, resulting in the formation of multilayer oxide scales on the steel surface. These scales interact with mold-flux residues originating from the casting process (CC). The morphology, chemistry, and adhesion of oxide scale strongly influence its removability during high-pressure hydraulic descaling and ultimately determine the surface quality of hot-rolled products. However, the mechanistic relationship between oxide scale evolution, scale-steel interfacial structure, and hydraulic descaling performance remains poorly understood.

This dissertation investigates oxide scale formation, modification, and removal in low-carbon thin-slab steels produced by …
