The composition of the United States population and its workforce is changing rapidly with a projected increase from 249 million in 1990 to 355 million by the year 2040. The majority white population is projected to only grow by 25 percent during this time period while the Latino, and Hispanic populations in the United States are projected to increase by 187 percent. Consequently, the current minorities will constitute more than half of the nation's total population by mid century and comprise a disproportionately large segment of the workforce. as a result of these changing demographics and increasing economic globalization, America's …

"The Freemasonry Of The Race": The Cultural Politics Of Ritual, Race, And Place In Postemancipation Virginia, Corey D. B. Walker
Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects
African American cultural and social history has neglected to interrogate fully a crucial facet of African American political, economic, and social life: African American Freemasonry. "The Freemasonry of the Race": The Cultural Politics of Ritual, Race, and Place in Postemancipation Virginia seeks to remedy this neglect. This project broadly situates African American Freemasonry in the complex and evolving relations of power, peoples, and polities of the Atlantic world. The study develops an interpretative framework that not only recognizes the organizational and institutional aspects of African American Freemasonry, but also interprets it as a discursive space in and through which articulations …

A Publisher's Hand: Strategic Gambles And Cultural Leadership By Moses Dresser Phillips In Antebellum America, Marykate Mcmaster
Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects
This study examines the life and business career of Moses Dresser Phillips (1813--1859), an important, but previously neglected, member of the Antebellum literary marketplace. If mentioned in discussions of Antebellum publishing at all, Moses Dresser Phillips is usually noted for choosing to create the Atlantic Monthly, one of his most distinguished achievements, or for deciding not to publish Uncle Tom's Cabin, one of his most costly errors. Although one of the most powerful figures in the literary marketplace, Phillips died in 1859 at age forty-six. Life dealt him a short tenure as a result of the stress caused by the …

The Relationship Between Conceptual Level And Moral Development Of Substance Abuse Prevention Professionals Working In Higher Education And Their Comprehensiveness Of Programming, Mary Katherine Crozier
Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects
Alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs are prevalent on American college and university campuses. The higher education literature is replete with research on prevalence rates (Presley, Meilman, and Cashin, 1998; Wechsler, Lee, Kuo, and Lee, 2000), substance abuse prevention theories (Gonzales, 1994), history of substance abuse prevention (O'Bryan and Daughtery, 1992), and descriptions of prevention programming (anderson and Milgram, 1996; Mills-Novoa, 1994). There is, however, little research on the substance abuse prevention professionals who are charged with developing and offering prevention programming in higher education.;This study is one of the first to examine the substance abuse prevention professional in higher education. …

Relationships Among Long -Term Debt, Current Fund Revenues And Expenditures, And Endowment Value At Public Four-Year Colleges And Universities, Michael Lee Stump
Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects
The purpose of this study is to determine what relationships exist among current fund revenues, current fund expenditures, long-term debt, and endowment value for public four-year colleges and universities, for fiscal years 1992 through 1997. An important objective of the study is to "let the data speak for itself." The research questions focused on trends among the four variables; whether long-term debt displaced some portion of current fund revenue and whether endowment value influenced this relationship; whether institutions incurred more debt when their revenues and endowment values have been increasing; and whether revenues failed to keep pace with institutions' needs …
Consolidating Power: Technology, Ideology, And Philadelphia's Growth In The Early Republic, Andrew M. Schocket
Consolidating Power: Technology, Ideology, And Philadelphia's Growth In The Early Republic, Andrew M. Schocket
Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects
This dissertation examines the ways that moneyed Philadelphians invented corporate power in America during the first four decades of the federal republic, specifically focusing on business corporations, such as canal companies and banks, and on a public corporation, Philadelphia's municipal government. Through evidence from company and municipal records and publications, the private papers and correspondence of corporate officers, newspapers, pamphlets, and legislative acts and proceedings, this study identifies the people and the technological and financial processes that contributed to the establishment and entrenchment of corporate economic and political power.;From the 1790s to the 1830s, Philadelphia-area residents demanded cheaper transportation, a …
Fellow Travelers: Indians And Europeans Together On The Early American Trail, Philip A. Levy
Fellow Travelers: Indians And Europeans Together On The Early American Trail, Philip A. Levy
Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects
The European exploration of America has traditionally conjured up images of Europeans intrepidly scanning horizons, meticulously detailing maps, and graciously offering curious natives access to God and goods. More than two decades of anthropological, historical, and ethnohistorical scholarship have tempered this heroic image and shown in great detail the complex and often contradictory role Indians played in this grand drama. Consequently, one can no longer picture colonial-era European explorers or travelers without also envisioning their Indian companions, both men and women, guiding the way, carrying the baggage, gathering the food, and providing needed information. This dissertation examines the character of …

Single Positive Pion Electroproduction In The First And Second Resonance Regions Using Clas, Hovanes Egiyan
Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects
The study of single pion electroproduction can provide valuable information on the structure of the nucleon and its excited states. Although these reactions have been studied for decades, never has the npi + channel been measured over the complete phase space of the reaction. The CEBAF Large Acceptance Spectrometer (CLAS) located in Hall B of Jefferson Lab is well-suited for conducting these measurements. The CLAS data were taken using a 1.515 GeV electron beam incident on a liquid H 2 target. The cross sections have been extracted, and their &phis;-dependence has been fit to obtain the sigmaTT, sigma TL and …

The major purpose of this study was to assess the relationships between the perceptions of self-efficacy of a school's teachers, the job satisfaction of a school's teachers, the academic achievement of a school's students, and a school's socioeconomic status.;The theoretical base for this study centers around the work of Bandura (1982, 1995) in the area of teacher self efficacy.
