Indigenous Knowledge, Social Relationships And Health: Community-Based Participatory Research With Anishinabe Youth At Pic River First Nation, Katie Big-Canoe Jan 2011

Indigenous Knowledge, Social Relationships And Health: Community-Based Participatory Research With Anishinabe Youth At Pic River First Nation, Katie Big-Canoe

Digitized Theses

Canada’s First Nations youth endure a disproportionate burden of health inequalities. While patterns of First Nation’s youth health point to distinctly social causes (e.g., lacking social support, violence and addiction), research has not adequately explored how the quality of local social environments influence First Nations youth health. Drawing from 19 in-depth interviews with Anishinabe youth, this community-based project utilized an Indigenous Knowledge framework to explore youth perceptions of health, social relationships, and the ways they interact. This research centred around four main objectives including: 1) understanding how Anishinabe youth define health & well-being; 2) exploring youth perceptions of social relationships; …

Location Of Foreign Direct Investment In Peoples Republic Of China, 1979--1993: Application Of A New Locational Framework, Tao Qu

Digitized Theses

This thesis addresses the spatial dimension of foreign direct investment (FDI) with a subnational context with reference to the P.R. China during the period of 1979-1993. The framework for the location of FDI within a subnational context includes three dimensions: (1) the dimension of firm specific variables (FSVs), (2) the dimension of location specific variables (LSVs), and (3) the temporal and dynamic dimension. Within this framework, the general locational models of FDI in China are built, the dynamic changes over time examined, and the effects of country of origin tested. This research also takes the initiative to examine the locational …

Household Responses To The Environmental Problem, Shouchao Fu Jan 1996

Household Responses To The Environmental Problem, Shouchao Fu

Digitized Theses

This study examines household responses to The Environmental Problem (TEP). TEP is a conceptualization of the complex of natural and human forces and processes that threaten irreversible destruction, degradation, and contamination of earth-sustaining conditions. TEP represents any or all environmental conditions of concern to human beings, at whatever scale, in whatever form(s), exceeding natural recovery capacities. Human beings are taken to be an integral part of the environment, exerting a distinctive environmental force.;Cluster analysis was used to define five separate and socioeconomically distinctive neighborhoods in London, Ontario, from which by stratified random sampling, 300 households were selected. Global Action Plan …

Sustainability And Canada's National Parks: Suitability For Policy, Planning And Management, Stephen William Boyd Jan 1995

Sustainability And Canada's National Parks: Suitability For Policy, Planning And Management, Stephen William Boyd

Digitized Theses

As a term, sustainability has often come to be adopted as the 'panacea' for many problems without any clear understanding that the solutions will vary given the nature of the problem, the scale involved and the goals and objectives set out. As a result, what has emerged in the literature has been many different 'pictures' of sustainability, all of which may be relevant in certain contexts. This research examined the potential of the concept within the context of Canadian national parks. Emphasis was directed toward understanding, through the perceptions of 'expert' groups knowledgeable about parks, the key elements needed to …

Exploration Of Partitioned State Tourism: The Example Of Partitioned China, Baodi Mao Jan 1995

Exploration Of Partitioned State Tourism: The Example Of Partitioned China, Baodi Mao

Digitized Theses

The European political state system has spread throughout the world and has become the predominant geo-political organization. However, the recent partitioning of states have generated a type of abnormal political entities: partitioned states. These partitioned states have serious implications for tourism development. Despite the uncertainty created by political strife and subdivision, many people continue to travel between partitioned states. Economic necessity, religious obligations, family ties, political negotiations, and pleasure are all relevant motivations driving the movement of people between these partitioned states. However, there is a substantial lack of systematic research on the movement of tourists between divided partitioned states. …

Salmon Aquaculture In Shetland And New Brunswick: A Comparative Study Of Resource Regimes Within A Moral Perspective, Craig Fergus Millar Jan 1995

Salmon Aquaculture In Shetland And New Brunswick: A Comparative Study Of Resource Regimes Within A Moral Perspective, Craig Fergus Millar

Digitized Theses

Development is a process of transformation within and among decision-making institutions. The oceans are a commons; the necessary institutions for resource management are organized within nation-state regimes and community-based regimes.;A morality is a framework of ethics governing participation in institutions and associated regimes. As social institutions, technology and property are moralities. Aquaculture, as new technology requiring the establishment of private property rights in a commons, is a development especially sensitive to the moral dimension.;Salmon aquaculturists in Shetland and New Brunswick use the same technology and exhibit very similar production profiles. Salmon farmers in Shetland have established themselves within a property …

Evaluation Of Yukon Environmental Assessment Interest Representation, Mark Vincent Prystupa Jan 1994

Evaluation Of Yukon Environmental Assessment Interest Representation, Mark Vincent Prystupa

Digitized Theses

Conflict is inherent in resource management. To effectively alleviate or eliminate interest incompatibilities, public policy processes must provide adequate opportunities for the representation of interests by concerned parties. The difficulty lies in ascertaining successful means of incorporating various interests into the decision-making process. Yet, to date, there has been little attention to what works, where, and why.;Evaluation may serve to remedy this problem by serving the dual functions of generating knowledge and improving practice. Models of the evaluation of interest representation were reviewed. None were found adequate to present needs. A new evaluative framework was developed that incorporated the properties …

Evolving Policies And Institutional Arrangements In The Canadian Agri-Food Industry: An Analysis Of Differential Development Between The Dairy And Beef Livestock Sectors, Quentin P. Chiotti Jan 1991

Evolving Policies And Institutional Arrangements In The Canadian Agri-Food Industry: An Analysis Of Differential Development Between The Dairy And Beef Livestock Sectors, Quentin P. Chiotti

Digitized Theses

This thesis examines the evolving policies and institutional arrangements in the Canadian agri-food industry; specifically an analysis of differential development between the dairy and beef livestock sectors. Moving beyond the pluralist and other alternative explanations for the development of marketing boards, an integrative theoretical framework which incorporates a broader conceptual and theoretical approach was adopted to investigate the role of producers, agribusiness and the state in the agricultural policy-making process for each agri-food sector. Two specific periods of conflict were examined, which represented significant attempts to introduce a marketing board as a means to resolve a crisis that was afflicting …

Functional Regions And Spatial Interaction: The Black/White Model, Valerian Titus Noronha Jan 1986

Functional Regions And Spatial Interaction: The Black/White Model, Valerian Titus Noronha

Digitized Theses

The functional region is usually conceptualized as a spatial partitioning that identifies communities of interest. Attempts at quantitative definition have mimicked analogous concepts in the social sciences, especially social clique identification. Although it is accepted that the functional region is based on human interaction, little attention has been paid to interaction modeling in the context of functional regions. This is partly because the spatial interaction model is not equipped to handle behavioral biases.;This research develops a model of spatial interaction that recognizes perceptual affinities or barriers between spatial units. Derived from the Luce and Tversky choice axioms, the Black/White Model …
