Moral Philosophy And The Intellectual World Of Justices: The United States Supreme Court, 1860-1910, Mark Warren Bailey Jan 1996

Moral Philosophy And The Intellectual World Of Justices: The United States Supreme Court, 1860-1910, Mark Warren Bailey

Digitized Theses

The United States Supreme Court during the period between 1860 and 1910 has been portrayed as the source of a laissez-faire style of constitutional interpretation under which the nation and the Court largely abdicated their obligation to protect society's common interests from the ideologically conservative influences of new and powerful economic interests.;Recent trends in legal/intellectual history have moderated this critical view and have begun to rehabilitate the Supreme Court's image by placing it in a more accurately drawn intellectual context. This approach reasserts the role of ideas in shaping the law and reduces that of economic determinism. This thesis extends …

Campaign Strategy And The Uses Of Televised Political Advertising In Michigan And Ontario, Leslie R. Coventry Jan 1996

Campaign Strategy And The Uses Of Televised Political Advertising In Michigan And Ontario, Leslie R. Coventry

Digitized Theses

This study examines the uses of televised political advertisements in campaign strategies in the United States and Canada. Two case studies--the Michigan gubernatorial election of 1994 and the Ontario provincial general election of 1995--serve as a basis for comparing the uses of televised political advertising in both countries.;Political strategists in Michigan and Ontario follow "meta-advertising strategies"--that is, television advertising which translates issues into symbols in order to build images. Issues are used in television advertising for five distinct purposes: (1) assigning blame (issue-blaming); (2) making accusations (issue-accusing); (3) claiming credit (issue-crediting); (4) mentioning the salience of an issue (issue-mentioning); (5) …

Grassroots Participation In Canadian Political Parties: An Examination Of Leadership Selection, Candidate Nomination, Policy Development And Election Campaigning, William Paul Cross Jan 1996

Grassroots Participation In Canadian Political Parties: An Examination Of Leadership Selection, Candidate Nomination, Policy Development And Election Campaigning, William Paul Cross

Digitized Theses

This thesis is about grassroots participation in Canadian political parties.;The thesis identifies and examines tensions between two views of public decision-making. Traditionally, Canadian politics have been described as brokerage and consociational. Increasingly, however, voters are rejecting these elite-dominated processes and demanding increased opportunity for direct, effective participation. Some favoured methods of increased participation, however, lack the collective processes traditionally believed necessary to build consensus among Canada's strong regional and linguistic cleavages. This thesis identifies the essential characteristics of these two views, providing a framework for assessing the current practices of political parties and popular reform proposals.;The thesis identifies parties as …

Health Politics And Structural Interests: The Development Of Community Health Centres In Ontario, William John Church Jan 1994

Health Politics And Structural Interests: The Development Of Community Health Centres In Ontario, William John Church

Digitized Theses

Health care politics can be understood as a competition among interests for control and power. Traditionally, the medical profession has dominated the health sector because of its monopoly position as the provider of medical services. In Canada, the entrance of government into the medical market as a monopoly purchaser of medical services has challenged the dominant position of the medical profession.;Since the introduction of publicly financed health insurance, politicians and administrators have been concerned with gaining control over the cost of the health care system. A rethinking of the basic policy assumptions has led to efforts to rationalize the delivery …

Visual Interactive Linear Programming: The Concept, An Example And An Empirical Assessment Of Its Value In Supporting Managerial Decision-Making, Arshad Ahmad Taseen Jan 1993

Visual Interactive Linear Programming: The Concept, An Example And An Empirical Assessment Of Its Value In Supporting Managerial Decision-Making, Arshad Ahmad Taseen

Digitized Theses

Decision support systems (DSS) and visual interactive (VI) modelling emerged during the 1970s at roughly the same time (Sprague and Watson, 1989), (Belton, 1991). Both ideas seem to have been driven more by advances in computer technology and increasing management demands than any theory. There are both similarities and differences between them. DSS often use some visual and interactive features (see Turban and Carlson, 1989), but seldom refer to them in terms of a VI model. On the other hand, a VI model is almost always built to support decision-making, and is often referred to as a DSS. Both have …

Dependents And Resource Allocation In An Aging Society: An Examination Of The Preston Argument In Canada, Edward D. Ng Jan 1992

Dependents And Resource Allocation In An Aging Society: An Examination Of The Preston Argument In Canada, Edward D. Ng

Digitized Theses

This study is an attempt to evaluate Samuel Preston's assertion that American elderly have recently fared far better than children in terms of poverty and mortality reduction. The divergent paths of America's dependents are related to family breakdown, the rise of politics of aging, and the differential response of health care and education to population change.;An examination of poverty in Canada found a recent reversal of economic well-being of seniors and children. Our analysis of the Survey of Consumer Finances shows that between 1973 and 1985 government transfer did increasingly favour the elderly more than children. However, many elderly were …

Community In Liberalism: Language Rights In Quebec, Pierre A. Coulombe Jan 1992

Community In Liberalism: Language Rights In Quebec, Pierre A. Coulombe

Digitized Theses

To what extent can liberal theory account for community without compromising its core value, that of autonomy? And, by extension, can a liberal framework of rights properly integrate claims to the promotion of community, say a linguistic community? Part of the answer rests on an interpretation of liberalism which would accommodate community and valid claims to communal goods such as language. Various attempts to offer such an interpretation, however, are constrained by normative claims about the primacy of autonomy, or yet are founded on shaky propositions about the moral status of community. These difficulties are apparent in rights-discourse, namely in …

Individual Reactions To Computing Technology: A Social Cognitive Theory Perspective, Deborah R. Compeau Jan 1992

Individual Reactions To Computing Technology: A Social Cognitive Theory Perspective, Deborah R. Compeau

Digitized Theses

Understanding how and why individuals use computers within their professional lives has been a longstanding goal of Information Systems research. In order to provide further insights into this phenomenon, from the perspective of Social Cognitive Theory (Bandura, 1986), two related studies were undertaken. In the first study, a model of individual behaviour based on Social Cognitive Theory was formulated and tested through a survey of approximately 1000 Canadian managers and professionals. The results of the study provide substantial support for the Social Cognitive Theory perspective. In particular, the findings highlight the important role of self-efficacy, individuals' beliefs that they can …

Information Integration And Performance: A Field Study And Structural Equations Analysis, James E. Wyse Jan 1992

Information Integration And Performance: A Field Study And Structural Equations Analysis, James E. Wyse

Digitized Theses

The deployment of information systems technology (IST) is often justified on the presumption that improved information delivery and content will positively impact individual performance and, consequently, organizational performance. The integration of information systems undertaken by many organizations as an IST deployment tactic is based on such a presumption. This presumed relationship has not been empirically established nor has it been the subject of significant theoretical development. This investigation sought to address these deficiencies.;To provide a theoretical basis for the research, a model of information integration was constructed. This model is conceptually grounded in the work on critical success factors (CSFs). …

To Advocate, To Diffuse, And To Elevate: The Culture And Context Of Medical Publishing In Canada, 1630 To 1920, Jennifer Jean Connor Jan 1992

To Advocate, To Diffuse, And To Elevate: The Culture And Context Of Medical Publishing In Canada, 1630 To 1920, Jennifer Jean Connor

Digitized Theses

Although medical publications have traditionally provided the primary medium for research, communication and education in medicine, scholars have not yet attempted to analyze them to understand how they varied; how they interacted with authors and publishers; how they were disseminated; how they changed and why; and how they were received (owned, read or used) by the medical profession or the general public. Typically, scholars have provided brief historical surveys of medical literature and have focused mainly on one genre, the medical journal. Even less is known about medical literature in Canada. This thesis therefore examines medical publications and the process …

Aspects Of Victorian Psychologism, John F. Metcalfe Jan 1991

Aspects Of Victorian Psychologism, John F. Metcalfe

Digitized Theses

In this essay I present revisionary readings of four Victorian philosophers. I argue that each of them is fundamentally committed to a naturalistic philosophical project called psychologism. The psychologistic readings that this critical stance generates offer resources that may be exploited by contemporary philosophers pursuing their own naturalistic projects.;In the first chapter I sketch the structure and main points of the essay. In the second chapter I suggest that Mansel's Kantian psychologism manages to evade the criticisms of Husserl. This serves to highlight the distance between psychologism and contemporary logic. In the third chapter I argue that Whewell embraces a …

Economic Growth: Dynamic Interactions With International Trade And Global Environment, Zhiqi Chen Jan 1991

Economic Growth: Dynamic Interactions With International Trade And Global Environment, Zhiqi Chen

Digitized Theses

The thesis comprises four essays that, through theoretical analysis, explore the dynamic impact of capital accumulation on international trade (Chapters 1 and 2) and the dynamic interaction between economic activities and the global climate (Chapters 3 and 4).;Chapter 1 presents a dynamic Heckscher-Ohlin model in which agents' labor supply and investment decisions are endogenous. It is shown that analogues to the major results of the standard Heckscher-Ohlin model are valid in this model. Using the model developed in Chapter 1, Chapter 2 studies the determinant of comparative advantage in the long-run between countries with identical preferences. It is shown that …

Three Essays On Non-Market Resource Allocation Mechanisms, Lijing Zhu Jan 1991

Three Essays On Non-Market Resource Allocation Mechanisms, Lijing Zhu

Digitized Theses

This thesis consists of three essays. In the first essay, I apply the first-price auction theory to investigate equilibrium queuing behavior, rent distribution, and rent dissipation given that the underpriced consumer goods are distributed through queuing and random allocation mechanisms. Four major results are obtained. First, using the generalized first-price auction framework, two existing queuing models in the literature are unified. Second, it is shown that the equilibrium queuing time can be shorter with a secondary market than without. Third, with rationing by queuing as the allocation mechanism, the emergence of secondary markets does not necessarily lead to Pareto improvement: …

Kant And The Conservation Of Matter, Joel Morris Jan 1990

Kant And The Conservation Of Matter, Joel Morris

Digitized Theses

This dissertation is an examination of Kant's rather notorious claim that natural science, or physics, has a priori principles, understood as the claim that physics is constrained by rules warranted by the essential nature of thought. The overall direction of this study is towards examining Kant's claim by close study of a particular principle of physics, the principle of the conservation of matter. If indeed this is a principle of physics, and Kant can successfully show that it is a priori, then it will be reasonable to conclude, in company with Kant, that physics has a priori principles.;Although Kant's proof …

Regeneration And Politics: Buber's Idea Of Nationhood, Janet Catherine Menard Jan 1989

Regeneration And Politics: Buber's Idea Of Nationhood, Janet Catherine Menard

Digitized Theses

The dissertation explores Martin Buber's conception of Jewish nationhood, in particular his idea of "regeneration", which, applied to Israel, involves as much divine and universal dimensions as it involves secular and particular dimensions, such as the biblical idea of cosmic mission and chosen nationhood, on the one hand, and return to labour on the land and the formation of communal socialism, on the other. Chapters I-VII discuss this attempted synthesis. In addition, they touch upon Buber's views on national development and autonomy within the context of international relations and the reality of Palestine--a reality distinguished by the presence of an …

The Morphology And Contractile Function Of Skeletal Muscle In Aged Humans, Charles Leslie Rice Jan 1989

The Morphology And Contractile Function Of Skeletal Muscle In Aged Humans, Charles Leslie Rice

Digitized Theses

Muscle strength and morphology were investigated in four studies in elderly men and women between the ages of 62 and 102 years. The purposes were to: (1) measure the voluntary strength in several limb muscle groups from an 'older' elderly population, (2) measure and compare the amount of muscle and non-muscle tissue (NMT) in the arms and legs of older (65 + years of age) and younger (25 to 38 years of age) males using computed tomography (CT) scans, (3) compare the CT results with measures of anthropometry in the same two groups of males, and (4) measure the electrically …

Beyond Virtue And Honour: Montesquieu And The Problem Of England In The "Spirit Of The Laws", Donald Anton Desserud Jan 1989

Beyond Virtue And Honour: Montesquieu And The Problem Of England In The "Spirit Of The Laws", Donald Anton Desserud

Digitized Theses

This thesis attempts to resolve the problematic nature of Montesquieu's analysis of the English constitution. It is argued that in the Spirit of the Laws Montesquieu presents England as a mixed regime composed of republican and monarchical elements. Further, England is able to protect the liberty of its citizens from unwarranted intrusions into their private lives by governments, and permits them to pursue a natural desire for commercial activity. England is able to avoid corruption, or at least the effects of corruption, by limiting government power, and by nurturing the interests of the citizens in participating in politics. Hence liberty …

The British Homogeneity Thesis And Nationalism In Scotland And Wales, John Francis Mcgarry Jan 1987

The British Homogeneity Thesis And Nationalism In Scotland And Wales, John Francis Mcgarry

Digitized Theses

In the mid-1960s, British political scientists claimed that their society was free of significant regional division. Their analysis was based on the theory of political and social diffusion originally put forward by Marx. However, electoral success for nationalist parties in Scotland and Wales in the late 1960s cast doubt on this theory. In response, two theories were put forward ascribing this nationalist phenomenon to economic causes. Michael Hechter argued that nationalism in Scotland and Wales was due to resentment caused by the existence of economic disparities between both countries and England. Tom Nairn, however, claimed that Scottish nationalism was a …

Jeremy Bentham On The Utility Of Religion And The Church Of England, James Edward Crimmins Jan 1984

Jeremy Bentham On The Utility Of Religion And The Church Of England, James Edward Crimmins

Digitized Theses

The dissertation provides a comprehensive study of the neglected religious writings, published and unpublished, of Jeremy Bentham. The origin, character, and purpose of his thoughts on religion have been misunderstood by scholars in the past. The first five chapters are devoted to an interpretive account of the importance of the religious writings and how they are to be understood. The second chapter is a history of Bentham's emerging unbelief, his early disaffection with organised religion, and his subsequent systematic attack on religion in general in later life. In the third chapter the conventional interpretive accounts of the religious writings which …

Network Thermodynamics And Morphogenesis, Jeanne Kay Marin Jan 1982

Network Thermodynamics And Morphogenesis, Jeanne Kay Marin

Digitized Theses

Network thermodynamics is a method of representing thermodynamic systems as equivalent electrical circuits which allows the application of well-developed techniques of network analysis to thermodynamic problems (Oster, G. F., Perelson, A. S. and Katchalsky, A. 1973, "Network Thermodynamics: Dynamical Modelling of Biophysical Systems." Q. Rev. Biophys., 6, 1-134). This dissertation covers four aspects. First, the relevant graph theory, circuit theory including normal tree analysis, and systems theory are summarized to provide a context and working vocabulary for the subsequent sections. Next, a systematic approach is presented for representing thermodynamic systems as equivalent circuits based on dynamical, dimensional, topological and mathematical …
