The Effect Of Socio-Economic Status As Measured By Education On Outcomes In Scleroderma (Systemic Sclerosis), Samah Mansour Assaad Mansour Jan 2011

The Effect Of Socio-Economic Status As Measured By Education On Outcomes In Scleroderma (Systemic Sclerosis), Samah Mansour Assaad Mansour

Digitized Theses

The goal of this study was to assess socioeconomic status (SES) as a social determinant of outcomes in patients with systemic sclerosis (SSc). In systemic lupus erythematosus, SES has a large effect on outcomes. It is unknown what the effect of SES is on outcomes in SSc. SES is often measured by income, occupation and education. In SSc, highest education would be attained decades prior to disease onset whereas current income and occupation could be low due to SSc and thus would confound interpretation of effect of SES on SSc. Therefore, education was used as a measure of SES in …

Cultural Transgression: The Pursuit Of Art And Education, Ann Langeman Jan 2011

Cultural Transgression: The Pursuit Of Art And Education, Ann Langeman

Digitized Theses

This thesis focuses on the transformational role art and education played in the life of a female learner and educator whose culture of origin sanctioned neither. This study uses autoethnography (self-study) as research method and postmodern theory as a framework to explore my struggle to obtain an education in Canada and develop visual art skills. The findings of my research are explored through a self portrait I created specifically for this purpose. Art and Education are a cultural transgression against Old Colony Mennonite ideology. Considerable research has been conducted on Mennonites from Mexico, however; research is unavailable on what it …

Exposing The Cracks In Aboriginal Education Policy: A Critical Analysis Of Ontario’S Social Studies Curriculum, Jeffery S. Westlake Jan 2010

Exposing The Cracks In Aboriginal Education Policy: A Critical Analysis Of Ontario’S Social Studies Curriculum, Jeffery S. Westlake

Digitized Theses

This case study demonstrates through the lenses of critical theory and anticolonialism that Ontario’s compulsory Grades 6-9 Social Studies curriculum is written from a Euro-Canadian standpoint and gives little regard to Aboriginal perspectives. Despite the Ministry of Education’s antiracism and equity policies, the Ontario curriculum is tainted by stereotypes, Eurocentrisms, myths, and omissions. The curriculum is an impediment to the reconciliation that must occur between Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal people in order to bring healing to Aboriginal communities. This thesis contributes to critical education research by showing that the Ontario curriculum is partially responsible for the ignorance that secondary school graduates …

Drama Pedagogy And Possibility: Building Community And Critical Literacy In The Classroom Through Artistic Means, Diane Florence Brown Jan 2009

Drama Pedagogy And Possibility: Building Community And Critical Literacy In The Classroom Through Artistic Means, Diane Florence Brown

Digitized Theses

This thesis investigates the role of drama pedagogy in facilitating both critical literacy and community in the classroom. To achieve this objective, I provide a theoretical overview of several theorists in the areas of classroom community, critical literacy, and aesthetic and experiential learning and compare their research findings to my own experiences with drama pedagogy, both as a student and teacher. These experiences are structured using narrative, and it is hoped that this personalized format will reveal the lived experience behind facts and events, and better illuminate how aesthetically-based, experiential learning might contribute to the development of both critical literacy …

The Impact Of Body Composition Feedback On Body Image, Motivation, And Adherence In An Exercise Program For Women, Erin S. Pearson Jan 2008

The Impact Of Body Composition Feedback On Body Image, Motivation, And Adherence In An Exercise Program For Women, Erin S. Pearson

Digitized Theses

Given the magnitude of health consequences resulting from physical inactivity, a need exists for the development of strategies which enhance adoption of and adherence to exercise programs. Some exercise intervention studies have examined body image change in relation to change in body composition (i.e., the relative amount of fat-free mass vs. fat mass in the body). However, these studies have produced mixed results with some studies showing no relationship between change in body image and change in body composition and others showing a significant relationship. One reason for these mixed findings may be due to how body composition has been …

“Strange Similes”: The Faerie Oueene And Renaissance Natural History, Sean Gordon Henry Jan 2008

“Strange Similes”: The Faerie Oueene And Renaissance Natural History, Sean Gordon Henry

Digitized Theses

Animals appear in every canto of every book of The Faerie Queene. This dissertation seeks to accentuate the strangeness of Spenser’s animals as well as to counter it. By placing Spenser’s epic in dialogue with early modem natural history, with which it shares a constant didacticism, I argue that the strangeness of his animals must first be recognized and then remedied by learning what was “meant” by those animals in the culture Spenser inhabited and helped make. Chapter One proposes ways in which Spenser, inhabiting a particular cultural time, place, and position, could have learned natural history as part of …

Alexander Kunitsyn (1783-1840): An Intellectual Biography Of An Early Russian Liberal, Julia Berest Jan 2008

Alexander Kunitsyn (1783-1840): An Intellectual Biography Of An Early Russian Liberal, Julia Berest

Digitized Theses

Despite the accepted view that the early nineteenth century in Russia was a time of political relaxation and liberal reforms, little is known about the intellectuals who contributed to the development of the Russian liberal thought. Among the many reasons behind this neglect is a long-standing assumption about Russian liberals' indifference to the issues of individual rights and freedoms that comprised the essence of European liberal ideology. The life and writings of Alexander Kunitsyn present a challenge to this assumption. He was one of the first native professors of natural law in Russia who aspired to spread among the educated …

Effects Of Aging And Strength Training On Shortening And Lengthening Muscle Actions In Women, Michelle Marie Porter Jan 1996

Effects Of Aging And Strength Training On Shortening And Lengthening Muscle Actions In Women, Michelle Marie Porter

Digitized Theses

There has been much research on strength changes with aging and the consequent effects of resistance training, however, relatively little is known about lengthening (eccentric; ECC) muscle actions. The purposes of these studies were to develop a method of testing and training plantar (PF) and dorsiflexion (DF) of the ankle in a standing position in order to investigate age-related and training effects on shortening (concentric; CONC) and ECC peak torque (PT) in women.;All subjects were healthy and physically active, and performed all testing and training on an isokinetic dynamometer. Strength testing was performed in both standing and supine positions at …

The Nature Of Status In Sport Teams, C Shanthi Jacob Jan 1996

The Nature Of Status In Sport Teams, C Shanthi Jacob

Digitized Theses

Status--the importance/prestige which is possessed by or accorded to individuals by virtue of their position in relation to others--plays an important role in group dynamics (Shaw, 1981). In the sport sciences, however, research on this concept is minimal. Thus, three studies were carried out to examine the nature of status among athletes in sport teams.;Studies 1 and 2 examined the relationship of the perceptions of status attributes and status rank to cohesion. Canadian (112 intercollegiate and 64 secondary school) and Indian (47 intercollegiate and 62 secondary school) athletes were tested.;The methodology adopted in Studies 1 and 2 were similar. In …

The Contribution Of Outcome Expectancies To Drinking Behaviour, Anne-Marie Wall Jan 1994

The Contribution Of Outcome Expectancies To Drinking Behaviour, Anne-Marie Wall

Digitized Theses

The present dissertation was conducted to gain a better theoretical understanding of the contribution of outcome expectancies to male undergraduate drinking behaviour. Two assumptions important to the construct validity of outcome expectancies were investigated: (1) outcome expectancies are situation-specific and (2) outcome expectancies are different from attitudes toward drinking.;In each of the four studies conducted in the first series of studies, environmental setting (i.e., bar vs. lab) was manipulated and a second variable was manipulated through instructional set. Specifically, expected beverage content (i.e., beer vs. soda pop), social context (i.e., alone, with friends, no explicit instructions), and level of intoxication …

The Successful High School Learner In Profile: A General Model Of Scholastic And Psychological Characteristics, Michael John Barnes Jan 1991

The Successful High School Learner In Profile: A General Model Of Scholastic And Psychological Characteristics, Michael John Barnes

Digitized Theses

Criticisms of secondary schooling invariably highlight four unresolved issues; weaknesses and deficits in graduates' proficiency, subject area failure rates, disorder in the classroom, and dropout rates. These issues persist despite the efforts of educators, periodic reforms imposed by governments, and a seeming abundance of school learning and achievement research. However, this research primarily concerns either pre- or post-secondary schooling. The limited secondary school research mainly has focused only on particular subject areas and, moreover, has considered relatively few of all the potentially relevant variables. Yet the issues clearly implicate the student as a functional entity of biological, cognitive, and affective …
