This thesis addresses the spatial dimension of foreign direct investment (FDI) with a subnational context with reference to the P.R. China during the period of 1979-1993. The framework for the location of FDI within a subnational context includes three dimensions: (1) the dimension of firm specific variables (FSVs), (2) the dimension of location specific variables (LSVs), and (3) the temporal and dynamic dimension. Within this framework, the general locational models of FDI in China are built, the dynamic changes over time examined, and the effects of country of origin tested. The United States Supreme Court during the period between 1860 and 1910 has been portrayed as the source of a laissez-faire style of constitutional interpretation under which the nation and the Court largely abdicated their obligation to protect society's common interests from the ideologically conservative influences of new and powerful economic interests.;Recent trends in legal/intellectual history have moderated this critical view and have begun to rehabilitate the Supreme Court's image by placing it in a more accurately drawn intellectual context. The European political state system has spread throughout the world and has become the predominant geo-political organization. However, the recent partitioning of states have generated a type of abnormal political entities: partitioned states. These partitioned states have serious implications for tourism development. Despite the uncertainty created by political strife and subdivision, many people continue to travel between partitioned states. Economic necessity, religious obligations, family ties, political negotiations, and pleasure are all relevant motivations driving the movement of people between these partitioned states. This study is an attempt to evaluate Samuel Preston's assertion that American elderly have recently fared far better than children in terms of poverty and mortality reduction. The divergent paths of America's dependents are related to family breakdown, the rise of politics of aging, and the differential response of health care and education to population change.;An examination of poverty in Canada found a recent reversal of economic well-being of seniors and children. Our analysis of the Survey of Consumer Finances shows that between 1973 and 1985 government transfer did increasingly favour the elderly more than children. However, many elderly were …

This thesis examines the effects of the imposition of trade restriction and promotion policies in a variety of frameworks. The first chapter provides an introduction. The second chapter is theoretical in nature and uses a general equilibrium model to compare the welfare effects of global trade restrictive measures to those of selective measures applied against particular countries. It is the thesis of Chapter 2 that on the grounds of economic efficiency, there is no blanket theoretical support for the MFN application of safeguards. The creation and mandate of the Canadian Department of Justice mirrored a congruence of law and politics which, in itself, was a realistic product of Canada's colonial history. Compelled by a desire to reach the most beneficial conclusion to any given conflict or problem, the department employed a pragmatic approach in its responsibilities as legal advisors to the government. This thesis analyzes tax policy options for Singapore. The first three substantive chapters evaluate the efficiency and distributive impacts of various tax alternatives using a static numerical general equilibrium model. One notable difference of this study from major general equilibrium tax studies for other countries is that instead of using the arithmetic sum of the Compensating and/or Equivalent variations across households, welfare impacts are evaluated using the concept of potential welfare gain/loss, based on Kaldor's (1939) weak compensation principle. This thesis investigates the effects of asymmetric information on the relationship between multinational enterprises (MNEs) and host countries. With incomplete information about a MNE's technology, the threat of expropriation does not always deter foreign direct investment (FDI), so that expropriation may actually occur with nonzero probability. Improvements in a MNE's investment alternatives, a rise in production costs or tax rates diminish the likelihood of expropriation. Low-cost countries are more likely than high-cost countries to expropriate MNEs. Low-cost industries simultaneously face higher tariffs and a higher expropriation rate.;Chapter three uses a principal-agent model to examine optimal host country taxation of a …

This thesis consists of three essays. In the first essay, I apply the first-price auction theory to investigate equilibrium queuing behavior, rent distribution, and rent dissipation given that the underpriced consumer goods are distributed through queuing and random allocation mechanisms. Four major results are obtained. First, using the generalized first-price auction framework, two existing queuing models in the literature are unified. Second, it is shown that the equilibrium queuing time can be shorter with a secondary market than without. Third, with rationing by queuing as the allocation mechanism, the emergence of secondary markets does not necessarily lead to Pareto improvement: …

This thesis examines the evolving policies and institutional arrangements in the Canadian agri-food industry; specifically an analysis of differential development between the dairy and beef livestock sectors. Moving beyond the pluralist and other alternative explanations for the development of marketing boards, an integrative theoretical framework which incorporates a broader conceptual and theoretical approach was adopted to investigate the role of producers, agribusiness and the state in the agricultural policy-making process for each agri-food sector.
