A Quasiclassical Trajectory Study Of Impulsive Collisions Between Hydroxyl (Nu = 1--9, K = 1,2,5,10) And Molecular Oxygen In The Upper Mesophere, Kathleen L. Gilbert Jan 1994

A Quasiclassical Trajectory Study Of Impulsive Collisions Between Hydroxyl (Nu = 1--9, K = 1,2,5,10) And Molecular Oxygen In The Upper Mesophere, Kathleen L. Gilbert

Digitized Theses

Observations of the hydroxyl airglow are widely used as a remote sensing tool in the study of middle atmosphere dynamics. To assess the validity of this technique, a comprehensive understanding of the excitation and emission processes is required. The effect of collisional quenching of vibrationally excited OH by {dollar}\rm O\sb2{dollar} remains an outstanding problem in interpreting OH airglow intensity variations. Impulsive collisions between {dollar}\rm OH\sp\*(\nu{dollar} = 1-9, K = 1,2,5,10) and {dollar}\rm O\sb2{dollar} are modelled using quasiclassical trajectories to investigate the distribution of product {dollar}\rm OH\sp\*{dollar} states. The mode of vibrational deactivation depends on whether the O or H atom …

Pattern Recognition In The Structure Of Strings Of Characters Using Multivariate Statistical Analysis, Muhammad Syamsun Jan 1994

Pattern Recognition In The Structure Of Strings Of Characters Using Multivariate Statistical Analysis, Muhammad Syamsun

Digitized Theses

Pattern recognition approach is used in this research as an alternative to univariate and rule-based systems for recovering source text encrypted in monoalphabetic and polyalphabetic substitution ciphers. The approach uses a multivariate statistical technique called discriminant analysis to classify encrypted characters as source text symbols. It requires the generation of invariant measurement vectors for all groups of characters from the source and the encrypted text to classify and to identify characters. The measurement vectors consist of the values of variables generated from one-graph and digraph structures of the text.;The research suggests that quadratic discriminant analysis, which requires more time and …

Surface And Interfacial Alloys Of Palladium With Copper(100): Structure, Chemistry, And Kinematics, Timothy Daniel Pope Jan 1994

Surface And Interfacial Alloys Of Palladium With Copper(100): Structure, Chemistry, And Kinematics, Timothy Daniel Pope

Digitized Theses

The interaction between Pd and the Cu(100) surface has been studied by surface science techniques. When Pd is evaporated onto Cu(100) at 110 K, small Pd islands form on the surface. At substrate temperatures above approximately 180 K, mixed Pd-Cu interfacial layers form. For Pd deposition at 300 K, c(2x2) and p4g surface alloy structures form near 0.5 and 1.0 monolayer (ML) Pd coverage respectively. Above one ML, disordered Pd overlayers form. The surface alloy structures are metastable only, since heating irreversibly segregates Cu to the surface.;The chemistry of the Pd and Cu atoms in the interfacial layers is changed …

Characterization Of Intestinal Epithelial Cells In Acute Intestinal Allograft Rejection, Xian-Chang Li Jan 1994

Characterization Of Intestinal Epithelial Cells In Acute Intestinal Allograft Rejection, Xian-Chang Li

Digitized Theses

Intestinal transplantation (IT) remains highly experimental compared to other solid organ transplants because of poorly defined mechanisms of graft rejection. In this project, the role of luminal bacteria-derived endotoxin and inflammatory cytokines (IL-1, IL-6, TNF-{dollar}\alpha){dollar} in intestinal epithelial damage during acute graft rejection was examined. In a novel mouse model of IT, the acute intestinal rejection was associated with elevated levels of endotoxin, IL-6, and TNF-{dollar}\alpha{dollar} in the peripheral blood. The progressive increase in endotoxin and TNF-{dollar}\alpha{dollar} levels correlated well with the histologic severity of epithelial damage. To further define the role of endotoxin and inflammatory cytokines on intestinal epithelial …

The Initial Interaction Of Water Vapour With Magnesium And Magnesium Alloy Surfaces, Steven Joseph Splinter Jan 1994

The Initial Interaction Of Water Vapour With Magnesium And Magnesium Alloy Surfaces, Steven Joseph Splinter

Digitized Theses

The initial interaction of water vapour with polycrystalline magnesium and magnesium alloy surfaces has been quantitatively followed from the earliest stage using Auger electron spectroscopy (AES) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The fitting of AES data to theoretical models suggested that a three-stage oxidation behaviour was operative on pure Mg surfaces: (1) dissociative chemisorption during doses up to {dollar}{lcub}\approx{rcub}0.7{dollar} langmuir (L) (1L = {dollar}1.3\times10\sp{lcub}-4{rcub}{dollar} Pa{dollar}\cdot{dollar}s); (2) oxide nucleation and growth which is complete by {dollar}{lcub}\approx{rcub}5{dollar}L at an average island height of four monolayers; and (3) bulk thickening after coalescence of the oxide islands. The bulk thickening stage was adequately described …

Regulation Of Antibody Production And Its Dysregulation In Autoimmunity, Colin Charles Anderson Jan 1994

Regulation Of Antibody Production And Its Dysregulation In Autoimmunity, Colin Charles Anderson

Digitized Theses

B cells can be stimulated to produce antibody by antigens or by polyclonal activators such as bacterial lipopolysaccharide (LPS). Mechanisms of regulation of LPS driven antibody responses are often interpreted in terms of antigen driven responses even though there is much evidence to suggest that LPS and antigen trigger distinct activation pathways. LPS stimulated antibody responses can be prevented by ligation of the B cell antigen receptor (BCR), while antigen driven responses are shut down by the crosslinking of the BCR to the receptor for the Fc portion of IgG (Fc{dollar}\gamma{dollar}R). The present studies on murine splenic B cells in …

The Reduction Of Concentration Values In A Contaminant Cloud In Environmental Flows, William Kenneth Heagy Jan 1994

The Reduction Of Concentration Values In A Contaminant Cloud In Environmental Flows, William Kenneth Heagy

Digitized Theses

This thesis considers the spread of contaminant after the release of a cloud of toxic gas into the atmosphere. A new measure, the Expected Mass Fraction (EMF), presents an improvement over the mean dosage as an indicator of the risk associated with the cloud release. The study shows that the variability of estimates of the EMF should be comparable to that of the dosage, so that reliable evaluation should be possible in many situations. The theory is based on the Chatwin-Sullivan {dollar}\alpha{dollar}-{dollar}\beta{dollar} formulation, which relates the mean concentration to the moments of the probability density function of the concentration. The …

Cesarean Delivery And Socioeconomic Status, Linda Ann Turner Jan 1994

Cesarean Delivery And Socioeconomic Status, Linda Ann Turner

Digitized Theses

Women of higher socioeconomic status have been observed to have higher rates of cesarean delivery, said to be evidence that many cesarean sections are unnecessary. Previous investigations have been conducted in settings where access to obstetrical services may be dependent on ability to pay, and investigators have often not adjusted differences for maternal age, parity and previous cesarean delivery, factors known to confound the association. Whether women of upper or lower socioeconomic status are at increased risk of cesarean delivery for biological reasons has not been determined.;The purpose of this investigation was to examine the association between cesarean delivery and …

Estimation Of Haemodynamic Parameters Using Magnetic Resonance Imaging, Richard Frayne Jan 1994

Estimation Of Haemodynamic Parameters Using Magnetic Resonance Imaging, Richard Frayne

Digitized Theses

Techniques have been both analyzed and developed for the estimation of a number of important haemodynamic parameters (including velocity, volume flow rate and shear rate) using a magnetic resonance (MR) scanner. Accurate estimation of these parameters is important because information about the haemodynamic state may (1) aid our understanding of vascular disease processes; and (2) provide a clinically-useful test for the presence of vascular disease.;The objectives of this thesis are: (1) the development of techniques that are necessary for the accurate and precise simulation of physiological flow waveforms in in vitro MR research; (2) the furthering of our understanding of …

The Impact Of Users' Expectations On The Success Of Information Technology Implementation, Barbara Lynn Marcolin Jan 1994

The Impact Of Users' Expectations On The Success Of Information Technology Implementation, Barbara Lynn Marcolin

Digitized Theses

Information Technology (IT) is being used to enhance productivity and effectiveness in response to today's competitive business pressures. However, there still exists a gap between what users expect and get from IT. As a result, this technology may not be helping users respond to the challenges in the business environment. In an effort to improve IT implementation by addressing users' expectations, Disconfirmation Theory, adapted from the consumer behaviour literature, is cast in an Information Systems (IS) setting. This theory helps understand how a deviation between users' expectations and IT performance can lead to IS success or failure. This theoretical foundation …

The Effectiveness Of Labelled, Typed Links As Cues In Hypertext Systems, Lisa Baron Jan 1994

The Effectiveness Of Labelled, Typed Links As Cues In Hypertext Systems, Lisa Baron

Digitized Theses

This research examines the classification of link types within hypertext databases. It is proposed that labelled links act as cues, enabling understanding of the structure and leading to more informed navigational choices. Although there is anecdotal evidence that indicating link types to readers is useful in hypertext systems, there is no experimental data to support this position. The goal of the proposed research is to provide a basis for the development of labels identifying link types, by focusing primarily on the hypertext readers' use of links. It addresses whether labelling the different types of links changes the effectiveness of searching …

The Contribution Of Outcome Expectancies To Drinking Behaviour, Anne-Marie Wall Jan 1994

The Contribution Of Outcome Expectancies To Drinking Behaviour, Anne-Marie Wall

Digitized Theses

The present dissertation was conducted to gain a better theoretical understanding of the contribution of outcome expectancies to male undergraduate drinking behaviour. Two assumptions important to the construct validity of outcome expectancies were investigated: (1) outcome expectancies are situation-specific and (2) outcome expectancies are different from attitudes toward drinking.;In each of the four studies conducted in the first series of studies, environmental setting (i.e., bar vs. lab) was manipulated and a second variable was manipulated through instructional set. Specifically, expected beverage content (i.e., beer vs. soda pop), social context (i.e., alone, with friends, no explicit instructions), and level of intoxication …

Health Politics And Structural Interests: The Development Of Community Health Centres In Ontario, William John Church Jan 1994

Health Politics And Structural Interests: The Development Of Community Health Centres In Ontario, William John Church

Digitized Theses

Health care politics can be understood as a competition among interests for control and power. Traditionally, the medical profession has dominated the health sector because of its monopoly position as the provider of medical services. In Canada, the entrance of government into the medical market as a monopoly purchaser of medical services has challenged the dominant position of the medical profession.;Since the introduction of publicly financed health insurance, politicians and administrators have been concerned with gaining control over the cost of the health care system. A rethinking of the basic policy assumptions has led to efforts to rationalize the delivery …

A Boolean Algebra Approach To High-Level Process Planning, Hugh Jack Jan 1994

A Boolean Algebra Approach To High-Level Process Planning, Hugh Jack

Digitized Theses

One of the most daunting challenges in Computer Integrated Manufacturing (CIM) is bridging the gap between Computer Aided Design (CAD) and Computer Aided Manufacturing (CAM). Many specific approaches have been developed for limited manufacturing domains. For example, a solid model may be directly converted into Numerical Control (NC) code for a computerized milling machine. But, when we try to extend the planning to cover a number of domains, there are no satisfactory techniques. This still leaves many unresolved problems when converting a product from design features to manufacturing features.;Computer Aided Process Planning (CAPP) is the umbrella term for automated approaches …

Computing The Modulation Transfer Function Of Magnetic Resonance Imagers, Michael C. Steckner Jan 1994

Computing The Modulation Transfer Function Of Magnetic Resonance Imagers, Michael C. Steckner

Digitized Theses

The quality of images produced by imaging devices of all types can be analyzed and quantified by a variety of metrics. Resolution is an important metric for all imaging devices because if the resolution characteristics do not meet the minimum requirements of an application, the resultant image may be unsuitable and possibly misleading. One resolution metric, called the Modulation Transfer Function (MTF), describes the ratio of input to output signal magnitude as a function of spatial frequency. Application of the MTF is limited to systems whose output scales linearly with input (linearity) and produces the same output image regardless of …

Physical Factors Influencing The Quality Of Megavoltage Radiographs, David Anthony Jaffray Jan 1994

Physical Factors Influencing The Quality Of Megavoltage Radiographs, David Anthony Jaffray

Digitized Theses

It has been recognized that improved methods of verifying radiation field placement in external beam radiotherapy are required in order to make frequent checks of field placement feasible. As a result, a large number of electronic portal imaging systems have been developed as possible replacements for film. These developments have produced digital systems with faster acquisition and display (few seconds), but the quality of the images acquired with such systems is still disappointing. The reasons for this are not well known, possibly because relatively few studies of the fundamental physics of imaging at megavoltage energies have been made.;This thesis examines …

Nonreductive Materialism And The Computational Theory Of Mind, Wayne Ian Henry Jan 1994

Nonreductive Materialism And The Computational Theory Of Mind, Wayne Ian Henry

Digitized Theses

This dissertation is a project in the philosophical foundations of cognitive science and inquires into the prospects for a materialist theory of mind which is scientifically respectable and realistic about intentional phenomena. This requires at least two things: (1) A materialistic solution to the mind/body problem; and, (2) a naturalistic solution to the problem of intentionality. With respect to the first, I argue that Computationalism holds out what is, at the present juncture, the only prospect for a materialistic theory of mental processes. And, with respect to the naturalization of intentionality, I argue that it is at least possible to …

The Information Needs And Information-Seeking Patterns Of Women Coping With And Adjusting To Multiple Sclerosis, Lynda Mary Baker Jan 1994

The Information Needs And Information-Seeking Patterns Of Women Coping With And Adjusting To Multiple Sclerosis, Lynda Mary Baker

Digitized Theses

Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a chronic neurological disease with an unpredictable course and no known cause or cure. Coping strategies of people with MS may therefore yield insights into information-seeking patterns. This study of information preferences was based on Miller's (1980) theory of information-seeking, which states that some people (monitors) cope by actively seeking information, while others (blunters) reject information. In this study, 251 female MS clinic patients were classified through the Miller Behavioral Style Scale (MBSS) as either monitors or blunters and by the length of time since diagnosis. It was hypothesized that monitors (in contrast to blunters) would …

Evaluation Of Yukon Environmental Assessment Interest Representation, Mark Vincent Prystupa Jan 1994

Evaluation Of Yukon Environmental Assessment Interest Representation, Mark Vincent Prystupa

Digitized Theses

Conflict is inherent in resource management. To effectively alleviate or eliminate interest incompatibilities, public policy processes must provide adequate opportunities for the representation of interests by concerned parties. The difficulty lies in ascertaining successful means of incorporating various interests into the decision-making process. Yet, to date, there has been little attention to what works, where, and why.;Evaluation may serve to remedy this problem by serving the dual functions of generating knowledge and improving practice. Models of the evaluation of interest representation were reviewed. None were found adequate to present needs. A new evaluative framework was developed that incorporated the properties …
