An Empirical Assessment Of Three Types Of Simulation Models Used In Developing Decision Support Systems, Yam-Keung Chau Jan 1992

An Empirical Assessment Of Three Types Of Simulation Models Used In Developing Decision Support Systems, Yam-Keung Chau

Digitized Theses

Visual interactive simulation (VIS) was first developed in the mid-1970s and has been claimed to be a better type of simulation model than traditional simulation for supporting decision making. VIS models which compare two simulated systems using paired-difference statistics have been claimed to be a more powerful decision-support tool than viewing animated simulation model output or steady state statistics. Since simulation is one of the most frequently used techniques in decision support systems (DSS), an examination of which type of simulation model is better for developing DSS is of vital importance. This dissertation focuses on examining and comparing the relative …

Line Clipping, Line Drawing And Their Amalgamation, Khun Yee Fung Jan 1992

Line Clipping, Line Drawing And Their Amalgamation, Khun Yee Fung

Digitized Theses

Line clipping and drawing are two important processes in the graphics output pipeline. Improving the efficiency of these two processes will improve the overall efficiency of the output pipeline. My thesis is that the efficiency of these two processes can be improved significantly.;Traditionally, line clipping is done in floating point numbers and line drawing in integers. A line is first clipped, probably more than once, and then rasterized. Since line segments must be rasterized at the end, doing clipping and rasterization together improves the overall efficiency, avoids computation in floating point numbers, and eliminates inconsistencies introduced in the line clipping …

Representation And Visualization Of Volume Data, Harvey H. Atkinson Jan 1992

Representation And Visualization Of Volume Data, Harvey H. Atkinson

Digitized Theses

This thesis focuses on the representation and visualization of volume data. The principal datasets used in experimentation were geometrically defined solids, as well as three dimensional arrays of density values obtained from Computed Tomography. Solid structures were, in general, encoded and stored as linear octrees.;An original interpolation method was designed based on the Fourier representation of a three-dimensional array. This method was compared to the most commonly used techniques of linear and tri-linear interpolation. Evaluation of the interpolator was performed by increasing the resolution of three-dimensional arrays of densities that were obtained from Computed Tomography. Bone and soft tissues were …

Dependents And Resource Allocation In An Aging Society: An Examination Of The Preston Argument In Canada, Edward D. Ng Jan 1992

Dependents And Resource Allocation In An Aging Society: An Examination Of The Preston Argument In Canada, Edward D. Ng

Digitized Theses

This study is an attempt to evaluate Samuel Preston's assertion that American elderly have recently fared far better than children in terms of poverty and mortality reduction. The divergent paths of America's dependents are related to family breakdown, the rise of politics of aging, and the differential response of health care and education to population change.;An examination of poverty in Canada found a recent reversal of economic well-being of seniors and children. Our analysis of the Survey of Consumer Finances shows that between 1973 and 1985 government transfer did increasingly favour the elderly more than children. However, many elderly were …

The Scholarly Process And The Nature Of The Information Needs Of The Literary Critic: A Descriptive Model, Clara M. Chu Jan 1992

The Scholarly Process And The Nature Of The Information Needs Of The Literary Critic: A Descriptive Model, Clara M. Chu

Digitized Theses

The research on the information needs and uses of humanists has produced descriptions of general information seeking behaviour patterns and characteristics of document use. The research efforts to explain the information seeking behaviour of humanists have been limited and are quite recent. As well, information scientists have made little effort to understand the nature of scholarship in the humanities.;In the present study, the information seeking and scholarly activities of one group of humanists, literary critics, were examined in order to develop a descriptive model of the literary critic's work and the functions served by information during each stage of the …

Community In Liberalism: Language Rights In Quebec, Pierre A. Coulombe Jan 1992

Community In Liberalism: Language Rights In Quebec, Pierre A. Coulombe

Digitized Theses

To what extent can liberal theory account for community without compromising its core value, that of autonomy? And, by extension, can a liberal framework of rights properly integrate claims to the promotion of community, say a linguistic community? Part of the answer rests on an interpretation of liberalism which would accommodate community and valid claims to communal goods such as language. Various attempts to offer such an interpretation, however, are constrained by normative claims about the primacy of autonomy, or yet are founded on shaky propositions about the moral status of community. These difficulties are apparent in rights-discourse, namely in …

Impact Of The Ontario "Freedom Of Information And Protection Of Privacy Act 1987" Upon Affected Organizations, Margaret Ann Wilkinson Jan 1992

Impact Of The Ontario "Freedom Of Information And Protection Of Privacy Act 1987" Upon Affected Organizations, Margaret Ann Wilkinson

Digitized Theses

This exploratory research was designed to study the effect of an attempt to control the flow of information through the imposition of a statute, the Ontario Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act, 1987 (which came into effect in January of 1988). The hypotheses tested dealt with the effect of the statute in terms of (1) its implementation by the management of organizations on which it is imposed (including its effect on organization structure); (2) its adoption by the employees of those organizations; and (3) the impact on information flow within the organizations (both direction of flow and the …

Trilogy On Trade Policy: Safeguards; Mfn; Multiproduct Firms, Donald D. Mountain Jan 1992

Trilogy On Trade Policy: Safeguards; Mfn; Multiproduct Firms, Donald D. Mountain

Digitized Theses

This thesis examines the effects of the imposition of trade restriction and promotion policies in a variety of frameworks. The first chapter provides an introduction. The second chapter is theoretical in nature and uses a general equilibrium model to compare the welfare effects of global trade restrictive measures to those of selective measures applied against particular countries. It is the thesis of Chapter 2 that on the grounds of economic efficiency, there is no blanket theoretical support for the MFN application of safeguards. Whether or not a safeguard action undertaken on an MFN basis is better for the world as …

The Development Of The Canadian Army Officer Corps, 1939-1945, Geoffrey W. Hayes Jan 1992

The Development Of The Canadian Army Officer Corps, 1939-1945, Geoffrey W. Hayes

Digitized Theses

This study, based largely on records held at the National Archives of Canada and the Directorate of History, Department of National Defence, examines the basic assumptions by which the English-speaking male officer was selected for the King's Commission during the Second World War. It argues that such assumptions embodied a conception of the officer as a "military manager," one who, in Morris Janowitz's conception is "concerned with the scientific and rational conduct of war.";It was in the First World War that a Canadian military manager first supplanted Sir Sam Hughes' ill-founded conceptions with a greater administrative and tactical efficiency. But …

A Reconfigurable Multicomputer System: Implementation And Performance, Paul Anthony Smeulders Jan 1992

A Reconfigurable Multicomputer System: Implementation And Performance, Paul Anthony Smeulders

Digitized Theses

Architecture of the computer has always been dictated by the attribute considered the most important during its design. The classical von Neumann computer system was the consequence of a quest for reliability; the modern multiple-processor architectures have resulted from a search for performance. While the modern system's existence is based on its relative reliability, its efficiency depends upon the match between the problem's inherent structure and the system's architecture. The architecture of a typical multiple-processor machine is fixed: essentially it either supports simultaneous, or sequential task solutions with efficiency. Since most computer-tractable problems are neither purely parallel nor serial, the …

Individual Reactions To Computing Technology: A Social Cognitive Theory Perspective, Deborah R. Compeau Jan 1992

Individual Reactions To Computing Technology: A Social Cognitive Theory Perspective, Deborah R. Compeau

Digitized Theses

Understanding how and why individuals use computers within their professional lives has been a longstanding goal of Information Systems research. In order to provide further insights into this phenomenon, from the perspective of Social Cognitive Theory (Bandura, 1986), two related studies were undertaken. In the first study, a model of individual behaviour based on Social Cognitive Theory was formulated and tested through a survey of approximately 1000 Canadian managers and professionals. The results of the study provide substantial support for the Social Cognitive Theory perspective. In particular, the findings highlight the important role of self-efficacy, individuals' beliefs that they can …

Information Integration And Performance: A Field Study And Structural Equations Analysis, James E. Wyse Jan 1992

Information Integration And Performance: A Field Study And Structural Equations Analysis, James E. Wyse

Digitized Theses

The deployment of information systems technology (IST) is often justified on the presumption that improved information delivery and content will positively impact individual performance and, consequently, organizational performance. The integration of information systems undertaken by many organizations as an IST deployment tactic is based on such a presumption. This presumed relationship has not been empirically established nor has it been the subject of significant theoretical development. This investigation sought to address these deficiencies.;To provide a theoretical basis for the research, a model of information integration was constructed. This model is conceptually grounded in the work on critical success factors (CSFs). …

Business Strategy, Information Systems Strategy, And Strategic Fit: Measurement And Performance Impacts, Yolande E. Chan Jan 1992

Business Strategy, Information Systems Strategy, And Strategic Fit: Measurement And Performance Impacts, Yolande E. Chan

Digitized Theses

Although there has been much discussion of the strategic role of information systems, there have been few attempts to capture or quantify the extent to which information systems complement company strategy and impact performance. This dissertation research develops, validates, and applies measurement instruments and accompanying procedures to assess information systems (IS) strategy and IS strategic fit (the synergy between business strategy and IS strategy).;The research is based on Venkatraman's work. He developed and tested an approach for measuring realized business unit strategy. This dissertation extends his work, applying it to the assessment of IS strategy and IS strategic fit.;The research …

Myocardial Electrophysiological Alterations In Pacing-Induced Heart Failure And Defibrillation Shock Delivery, Huagui Li Jan 1992

Myocardial Electrophysiological Alterations In Pacing-Induced Heart Failure And Defibrillation Shock Delivery, Huagui Li

Digitized Theses

Heart failure patients frequently have ventricular arrhythmias and high incidence of sudden death. Current antiarrhythmic drug therapies have failed to improve the survival of these patients as the arrhythmogenesis is poorly understood. The only effective therapy for lethal arrhythmia, ventricular fibrillation, is electrical shock (defibrillation). Studies on arrhythmogenesis and potential antiarrhythmic therapies in heart failure are needed.;This thesis investigated: (1) cardiac electrophysiological changes and arrhythmogenesis in a heart failure model; (2) cellular electrophysiological effects of defibrillation shocks.;Heart failure was produced by rapid ventricular pacing (240 beats/min, 4-5 weeks) in 35 dogs. Twenty-one operated, non-paced dogs served as control. Increased impulse …

Life Stress, Appraisals Of Diabetes, Coping And Long Term Blood Glucose Control In Adults With Insulin-Dependent Diabetes Mellitus: A Twelve Week Study, Owen Jon Garrett

Digitized Theses

Although there is a general consensus in the literature of a relationship between stress and blood glucose control in individuals with insulin dependent diabetes mellitus (IDDM), the extent and nature of this relationship is not well understood. The present study addressed several questions and hypotheses regarding proposed relationships between life stress, long term blood glucose control, coping with diabetic problems and cognitive appraisals of diabetes in persons with IDDM. A longitudinal, prospective research design was used in which fifty-seven persons were followed over two consecutive six week periods. A composite measure of life stress was developed and interrelationships among appraisals …

To Advocate, To Diffuse, And To Elevate: The Culture And Context Of Medical Publishing In Canada, 1630 To 1920, Jennifer Jean Connor Jan 1992

To Advocate, To Diffuse, And To Elevate: The Culture And Context Of Medical Publishing In Canada, 1630 To 1920, Jennifer Jean Connor

Digitized Theses

Although medical publications have traditionally provided the primary medium for research, communication and education in medicine, scholars have not yet attempted to analyze them to understand how they varied; how they interacted with authors and publishers; how they were disseminated; how they changed and why; and how they were received (owned, read or used) by the medical profession or the general public. Typically, scholars have provided brief historical surveys of medical literature and have focused mainly on one genre, the medical journal. Even less is known about medical literature in Canada. This thesis therefore examines medical publications and the process …
