Electrochemical Properties Of Passive Films On 440c Stainless Steel, Timothy Lawrence Walzak Jan 1991

Electrochemical Properties Of Passive Films On 440c Stainless Steel, Timothy Lawrence Walzak

Digitized Theses

The properties of passive films formed on 440C stainless steel were investigated using advanced electrochemical techniques for the purpose of establishing a method to measure film stability directly in passivation baths. Electrochemical measurements were sensitive to the passive film properties and were able to quantify the effect of cooling rate on passive film stability. The various techniques used--linear polarization, AC impedance, small amplitude cyclic voltammetry (SACV), and coulostatic transient measurements--provided results that exhibited excellent agreement with the AC impedance technique providing the most information about the interfacial reactions. Full electrochemical characterization of the passive film stability required an evaluation of …

Projection Presaturation: A New Approach To Producing Conformal Selective Excitation In Magnetic Resonance, Saryu Singh Jan 1991

Projection Presaturation: A New Approach To Producing Conformal Selective Excitation In Magnetic Resonance, Saryu Singh

Digitized Theses

In recent years, several techniques of volume-selective excitation for extracting signals from a chosen region in a large sample have appeared for various applications in magnetic resonance (MR). Most of these techniques suffer from, at least, the T{dollar}\sb2{dollar}-decay problem, which rules out their application for short T{dollar}\sb2{dollar} species. The remaining methods, while not suffering from the above limitation, are generally sensitive to errors in the radio frequency (rf) tip-angle and imperfections in rf profile, which cause inaccurate localization.;To overcome these problems, I have devised a new method for multi-dimensional spatial localization by accurate outer volume suppression. The method uses a …

An In Vitro Examination Of Surface Tension Reduction By Pulmonary Surfactant In The Presence And Absence Of Inhibitory Agents, Amanda M. Cockshutt Jan 1991

An In Vitro Examination Of Surface Tension Reduction By Pulmonary Surfactant In The Presence And Absence Of Inhibitory Agents, Amanda M. Cockshutt

Digitized Theses

The surface activity of Lipid Extract Surfactant (LES), a clinical preparation used for the treatment of Neonatal Respiratory Distress Syndrome, and the effects of addition of surfactant-associated protein A (SP-A) and palmitic acid were assayed in vitro in the presence and absence of challenge by inhibitory agents. Measurements of surface activity were made with the pulsating bubble surfactometer and the captive bubble technique. The addition of SP-A to LES enhances the surface activity of the preparation, especially at low surfactant concentrations. SP-A accelerates the adsorption of surfactant lipids from the aqueous subphase to the air-liquid interface and causes enrichment of …

Governing The Law: The Canadian Department Of Justice In The Early Confederation Era, Jonathan Scott Swainger Jan 1991

Governing The Law: The Canadian Department Of Justice In The Early Confederation Era, Jonathan Scott Swainger

Digitized Theses

The creation and mandate of the Canadian Department of Justice mirrored a congruence of law and politics which, in itself, was a realistic product of Canada's colonial history. Compelled by a desire to reach the most beneficial conclusion to any given conflict or problem, the department employed a pragmatic approach in its responsibilities as legal advisors to the government. This flexibility was necessary not only because of the complexities and idiosyncracies of Canadian political life, but also in working out the vagaries of the British North America Act of 1867. Based upon the official correspondence and documents of the Department …

Why Is Observation Important To Science?, Robert G. Hudson Jan 1991

Why Is Observation Important To Science?, Robert G. Hudson

Digitized Theses

I believe observation is valued by scientists because it is an objective source of information. Objective here can mean (at least) two things. First, observation could be objective in that it is an assured source of truths about the world, truths whose meaning is the same for everyone regardless of their personal theoretical vantage points. I criticize this construal of observational objectivity in chapter one. The guilty doctrine, which I entitle 'empiricistic epistemological foundationalism', is shown to be untenable on, in part, historical grounds. The historical episode I deploy for this task is the early stages of quantum theory, an …

The Kbo Model: Towards A Unified View Of Data, Behaviors, And Messages In Object-Oriented Database Systems, Li Yu Jan 1991

The Kbo Model: Towards A Unified View Of Data, Behaviors, And Messages In Object-Oriented Database Systems, Li Yu

Digitized Theses

One of the most distinguished features of object-oriented databases (OODBs) is their support for users to populate both data and arbitrary behaviors in the same database. Consequently, the increasingly large population of arbitrary behaviors in OODBs demands a database approach to their management and manipulation. Current OODB models offer no capability of managing arbitrary behaviors as meaningful database objects, and thus fail to meet such a demand.;The goal of this research is to unify data, behaviors, and messages into a uniform notion of objects so that a single database approach can be developed to manage and manipulate such objects. The …

Probabilistic Models Of Search State And Path Patterns In Hypertext Information Retrieval Systems, Liwen Qiu Jan 1991

Probabilistic Models Of Search State And Path Patterns In Hypertext Information Retrieval Systems, Liwen Qiu

Digitized Theses

The objective of this research is to discover the search state and path patterns through which users retrieve information in hypertext systems. The Markov model is used to describe users' search behaviour. As determined by the log-linear model test, the second-order Markov model is the best model. Search patterns of different user groups were studied by comparing the corresponding transition probability matrices. The comparisons were made based on the following factors: gender, search experience, search task, and the user's academic background. The statistical tests revealed that there were significant differences among all the groups being compared.;A three-way analysis of variance …

Aspects Of Victorian Psychologism, John F. Metcalfe Jan 1991

Aspects Of Victorian Psychologism, John F. Metcalfe

Digitized Theses

In this essay I present revisionary readings of four Victorian philosophers. I argue that each of them is fundamentally committed to a naturalistic philosophical project called psychologism. The psychologistic readings that this critical stance generates offer resources that may be exploited by contemporary philosophers pursuing their own naturalistic projects.;In the first chapter I sketch the structure and main points of the essay. In the second chapter I suggest that Mansel's Kantian psychologism manages to evade the criticisms of Husserl. This serves to highlight the distance between psychologism and contemporary logic. In the third chapter I argue that Whewell embraces a …

Economic Growth: Dynamic Interactions With International Trade And Global Environment, Zhiqi Chen Jan 1991

Economic Growth: Dynamic Interactions With International Trade And Global Environment, Zhiqi Chen

Digitized Theses

The thesis comprises four essays that, through theoretical analysis, explore the dynamic impact of capital accumulation on international trade (Chapters 1 and 2) and the dynamic interaction between economic activities and the global climate (Chapters 3 and 4).;Chapter 1 presents a dynamic Heckscher-Ohlin model in which agents' labor supply and investment decisions are endogenous. It is shown that analogues to the major results of the standard Heckscher-Ohlin model are valid in this model. Using the model developed in Chapter 1, Chapter 2 studies the determinant of comparative advantage in the long-run between countries with identical preferences. It is shown that …

Influence Of Cost Consciousness And Heuristic Approach On Online Search Performance, Jill Austin Jan 1991

Influence Of Cost Consciousness And Heuristic Approach On Online Search Performance, Jill Austin

Digitized Theses

This research used an experimental approach to investigate the relationship between cost consciousness, heuristic approach and recall in online searching. It also investigated some of the characteristics of the searcher that would be expected to influence heuristic approach, including familiarity with the search topic, familiarity with the database and anxiety. A 2 x 2 factorial design was used, where the factors were experience (expert/novice) and presence or absence of a cost consciousness treatment. Forty subjects in all searched the same two search questions. A verbal protocol technique was used, whereby subjects verbalized their thoughts while conducting their searches. The verbalizations …

Analysis Of Tax Policy Options For Singapore: A General Equilibrium Approach, Ngee Choon Chia Jan 1991

Analysis Of Tax Policy Options For Singapore: A General Equilibrium Approach, Ngee Choon Chia

Digitized Theses

This thesis analyzes tax policy options for Singapore. The first three substantive chapters evaluate the efficiency and distributive impacts of various tax alternatives using a static numerical general equilibrium model. One notable difference of this study from major general equilibrium tax studies for other countries is that instead of using the arithmetic sum of the Compensating and/or Equivalent variations across households, welfare impacts are evaluated using the concept of potential welfare gain/loss, based on Kaldor's (1939) weak compensation principle. The cost of tax distortions is sensitive to the criteria used to evaluate efficiency. To analyze the general equilibrium impacts of …

The Regulation Of Multinational Enterprises Under Asymmetric Information, Horst H. Raff Jan 1991

The Regulation Of Multinational Enterprises Under Asymmetric Information, Horst H. Raff

Digitized Theses

This thesis investigates the effects of asymmetric information on the relationship between multinational enterprises (MNEs) and host countries. With incomplete information about a MNE's technology, the threat of expropriation does not always deter foreign direct investment (FDI), so that expropriation may actually occur with nonzero probability. Improvements in a MNE's investment alternatives, a rise in production costs or tax rates diminish the likelihood of expropriation. Low-cost countries are more likely than high-cost countries to expropriate MNEs. Low-cost industries simultaneously face higher tariffs and a higher expropriation rate.;Chapter three uses a principal-agent model to examine optimal host country taxation of a …

A Genetic Analysis Of Folate Transport In Chinese Hamster Ovary Cells, T Michael Underhill Jan 1991

A Genetic Analysis Of Folate Transport In Chinese Hamster Ovary Cells, T Michael Underhill

Digitized Theses

Chinese Hamster Ovary cells that are about 50x more resistant to the cytotoxic action of methotrexate than wild-type cells were deficient in the ability to take up methotrexate. In the absence of any exogeneous folates these cells require 100-250x the level of folinic acid as do wild-type cells to support growth at a similar level. Two classes of mutants were distinguishable by their revertability for growth on folinic acid and ability to take-up folic acid. Revertants derived from one class were similar to wild-type cells in their ability to grow in medium containing low levels of folinic acid and in …

The Cytoskeleton In The Syncytial Epithelium Of Adult Schistosoma Mansoni, You Zhou Jan 1991

The Cytoskeleton In The Syncytial Epithelium Of Adult Schistosoma Mansoni, You Zhou

Digitized Theses

The surface layer of Schistosoma mansoni is an anucleated syncytium, covered by an apical plasma membrane (APM) and an overlying envelope (En), and is connected with the subsyncytial cell bodies via the membrane-bound cytoplasmic connections (MCC). This syncytium is considered as an adaptation for rapid and synchronous renewal of the surface membranes which play an important role in evasion of the host's immune system.;The present studies demonstrated the effects of the third complement component (C{dollar}\sb3{dollar}) and serotonin (5HT) on the synthesis of the discoid bodies (DBs) and multilamellar bodies (MLBs), and major syncytial inclusion bodies in vitro. With short-time incubations …

Determinants Of Critical Power And Anaerobic Work Capacity In Young And Elderly Men, Thomas James Overend Jan 1991

Determinants Of Critical Power And Anaerobic Work Capacity In Young And Elderly Men, Thomas James Overend

Digitized Theses

Determinants of critical power (CP, the theoretical maximal rate of non-fatiguing work) and anaerobic work capacity (AWC, a finite energetic reserve from intra-muscular sources) were determined in young (n = 13, 24.5 y) and elderly men (n = 12, 70.7 y). The purposes of the four studies were to: (1a) determine and compare CP and AWC in young and elderly men; (1b) determine if CP does represent a true maximal rate of non-fatiguing work; (2) determine thigh component cross-sectional areas (CSA) and volumes; (3) determine the strength and strength/CSA ratios of the knee extensors and knee flexors; and (4) identify …

Science And The Systematicity Of Nature: A Critique Of Nancy Cartwright's Doctrine Of Nature And Natural Science, Philip Ellery Catton Jan 1991

Science And The Systematicity Of Nature: A Critique Of Nancy Cartwright's Doctrine Of Nature And Natural Science, Philip Ellery Catton

Digitized Theses

Whether nature is or is not systematic sounds at first like an idle metaphysical question, but considered in relation to (i) the aims of science and (ii) the methods of appraisal of scientific theories, it can be given clear (and quite plainly empirical) content. It is also necessary to ask the question in order to study (iii) the relation of causation, laws of nature, and theoretical structure.;(i) Aims. The doctrines (1) that science aims to provide explanations, (2) that science achieves success in this aim, (3) that explanation involves unification, and (4) that the principles on which explanations, properly so-called, …

Codes Andn-Ary Relations, Shyr-Shen Yu Jan 1991

Codes Andn-Ary Relations, Shyr-Shen Yu

Digitized Theses

The aim of this thesis is to develop a general mechanism for the construction of codes and to extract general properties of classes of codes. This mechanism makes it unnecessary to study various classes of codes separately--at least to some extent--by different constructions and properties.;To achieve this goal, the mechanism of characterizing classes of languages by binary relations is studied. Some general properties related to binary relations and languages are obtained. Moreover, three new classes of codes, n-shuffle codes, solid codes, and intercodes are constructed. Solid codes and intercodes have the synchronous decoding property which is very useful in the …

Digitized Theses

Phosphorous 31, nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy {dollar}(\sp{lcub}31{rcub}{dollar}P NMRS) was used as a non-invasive probe of forearm muscle metabolism in three studies of healthy men and women. Specific objectives of the studies were to: (1) observe the changes in high energy phosphates and intracellular pH in muscle, during a ramp exercise protocol, (2) study the effect of endurance training on muscle metabolism and evaluate the utility of the forearm ramp test as a means to assess muscle oxidative capacity, and (3) describe the kinetics of phosphocreatine (PCr) and inorganic phosphate (Pi) metabolism during the on and off transient response to moderate …

Using Elaborative Interrogation To Help Students Overcome Their Science Misconceptions, Vera Ella Woloshyn Jan 1991

Using Elaborative Interrogation To Help Students Overcome Their Science Misconceptions, Vera Ella Woloshyn

Digitized Theses

The experiments reported here investigated whether a question-answering strategy called elaborative-interrogation would facilitate children's acquisition of science facts. Of particular interest was whether the strategy would help students acquire facts that addressed their inaccurate beliefs, or what are otherwise known as misconceptions. Across two experiments, 140 students in grades 6 and 7 were asked to process individually presented statements. Half of these statements were consistent with their prior knowledge, whereas the remaining facts were inconsistent (i.e., subject to misconceptions). Half of the students in each grade were instructed to read the sentences aloud at a rate that allowed them to …

Three Essays On Non-Market Resource Allocation Mechanisms, Lijing Zhu Jan 1991

Three Essays On Non-Market Resource Allocation Mechanisms, Lijing Zhu

Digitized Theses

This thesis consists of three essays. In the first essay, I apply the first-price auction theory to investigate equilibrium queuing behavior, rent distribution, and rent dissipation given that the underpriced consumer goods are distributed through queuing and random allocation mechanisms. Four major results are obtained. First, using the generalized first-price auction framework, two existing queuing models in the literature are unified. Second, it is shown that the equilibrium queuing time can be shorter with a secondary market than without. Third, with rationing by queuing as the allocation mechanism, the emergence of secondary markets does not necessarily lead to Pareto improvement: …

Effects Of Reactive Oxygen Species On The Functional And Electrophysiological Responses Of Cardiac Tissues, Robert Gene Tsushima Jan 1991

Effects Of Reactive Oxygen Species On The Functional And Electrophysiological Responses Of Cardiac Tissues, Robert Gene Tsushima

Digitized Theses

Reactive oxygen species have been implicated in the development of a variety pathological conditions, including myocardial ischemia and reperfusion injury. The present study examined the effects of reactive oxygen species on the functional and electrophysiological responses of cardiac tissues.;Purine/xanthine oxidase and hydrogen peroxide (H{dollar}\sb2{dollar}O{dollar}\sb2{dollar}) caused a concentration-dependent decline in contractile force with a concomitant rise in resting tension in isolated guinea pig hearts. These observations indicate that exogenous reactive oxygen species can cause direct myocardial dysfunction in a concentration-dependent manner.;In addition, purine/xanthine oxidase significantly depressed recovery of contractile function, enhanced resting tension and prolonged the duration of reperfusion arrhythmias. In …

Evolving Policies And Institutional Arrangements In The Canadian Agri-Food Industry: An Analysis Of Differential Development Between The Dairy And Beef Livestock Sectors, Quentin P. Chiotti Jan 1991

Evolving Policies And Institutional Arrangements In The Canadian Agri-Food Industry: An Analysis Of Differential Development Between The Dairy And Beef Livestock Sectors, Quentin P. Chiotti

Digitized Theses

This thesis examines the evolving policies and institutional arrangements in the Canadian agri-food industry; specifically an analysis of differential development between the dairy and beef livestock sectors. Moving beyond the pluralist and other alternative explanations for the development of marketing boards, an integrative theoretical framework which incorporates a broader conceptual and theoretical approach was adopted to investigate the role of producers, agribusiness and the state in the agricultural policy-making process for each agri-food sector. Two specific periods of conflict were examined, which represented significant attempts to introduce a marketing board as a means to resolve a crisis that was afflicting …

The Social Organization Of Birth Control Information In Public Libraries, Norma June Lundberg Jan 1991

The Social Organization Of Birth Control Information In Public Libraries, Norma June Lundberg

Digitized Theses

This thesis aimed to discover how difficult it might be for women to obtain birth control information from public libraries, especially information produced by women and relevant to women's control of our reproductive health. I examined the public library as a social institution, birth control information as a socially organized process, and within this framework the availability of women's knowledge.;I used the methodological approach of institutional ethnography to explore the social relations that organize librarians' work and connect it to other social institutions. The ideology of doing library work, the discourse that organizes the work, and the textual manifestations of …

The Successful High School Learner In Profile: A General Model Of Scholastic And Psychological Characteristics, Michael John Barnes Jan 1991

The Successful High School Learner In Profile: A General Model Of Scholastic And Psychological Characteristics, Michael John Barnes

Digitized Theses

Criticisms of secondary schooling invariably highlight four unresolved issues; weaknesses and deficits in graduates' proficiency, subject area failure rates, disorder in the classroom, and dropout rates. These issues persist despite the efforts of educators, periodic reforms imposed by governments, and a seeming abundance of school learning and achievement research. However, this research primarily concerns either pre- or post-secondary schooling. The limited secondary school research mainly has focused only on particular subject areas and, moreover, has considered relatively few of all the potentially relevant variables. Yet the issues clearly implicate the student as a functional entity of biological, cognitive, and affective …

Local Government Unionism In Ontario, 1935-1963: A Study Of The Determinants Of Union Growth (Volumes I And Ii), James Robert Mcvittie Jan 1991

Local Government Unionism In Ontario, 1935-1963: A Study Of The Determinants Of Union Growth (Volumes I And Ii), James Robert Mcvittie

Digitized Theses

The thesis examines the proposition that the emergence and growth of local government unionism in Ontario, during the period 1935 to 1963, can be explained in terms of the hypothesized relationships identified in the aggregate union growth literature. Developments in both general municipal employment and the municipal utilities (hydro-electric power, urban transit and water works) are addressed. Specifically, the significance of trends in local government employment, unemployment and labour force composition are explored. This is followed by a detailed examination of local government compensation. The relevance of existing labour relations policy for local government unionism is then assessed. Finally, the …

The Generation Of Cytotoxic Tumour Infiltrating Lymphocyte Clones Against Head And Neck Squamous Cell Carcinoma, Henry J. Lapointe Jan 1991

The Generation Of Cytotoxic Tumour Infiltrating Lymphocyte Clones Against Head And Neck Squamous Cell Carcinoma, Henry J. Lapointe

Digitized Theses

73 samples of H&NSCCa were processed for these studies. An enzymatic disaggregation protocol for the flow cytometric analysis of DNA content of tumour whole cell preparations was developed. Analysis of the tumour cell component without the need for incorporation of reference controls provided a more accurate assessment of DNA content of tumour cell populations. Six lines of H&NSCCa were established in vitro from fresh tumour samples. Tumour cell effects on PHA- or IL-2 stimulated proliferation of PBMNCs ranged from 61% and 45% suppression to 4% and 121% enhancement of the proliferative responses respectively. Flow cytometric analysis revealed a down regulation …

Structure/Function Studies Of Trypanosome Variant Surface Glycoproteins, Vern Bruce Carruthers Jan 1991

Structure/Function Studies Of Trypanosome Variant Surface Glycoproteins, Vern Bruce Carruthers

Digitized Theses

Antigenic variation is manifested by many prominent infectious organisms in adaptive response to host immunity. However, polymorphism in antigenic structure is often limited by the necessity to maintain functionality of the antigen. It follows that it may be possible to design molecularly defined vaccines capable of accounting for variable antigenic phenotype. For this reason, the focus of the present thesis was to develop a model system using trypanosome variant surface glycoprotein (VSG) for examining the effects of amino acid sequence variation on the specificity of antigenic determinants.;In order to assess the suitability for a model system of four VSGs (isoVAT …

Role Of Metallothionein In Chemical Toxicity Mediated By Reactive Intermediates Generated From Xenobiotic And Oxygen Metabolism, Zacharias Emmanuel Suntres Jan 1991

Role Of Metallothionein In Chemical Toxicity Mediated By Reactive Intermediates Generated From Xenobiotic And Oxygen Metabolism, Zacharias Emmanuel Suntres

Digitized Theses

This research was concerned with the role of metallothionein (MT) in chemical toxicity mediated by reactive intermediates generated from xenobiotic and oxygen metabolism. Metallothionein(s) are ubiquitous, low molecular weight, cysteine-rich (30% of total amino acids), metal binding proteins. These proteins have been shown to be important in the regulation of essential metal metabolism and in the detoxication of toxic metals. In the present research it was hypothesized that (i) because of its high cysteinyl thiolate concentration, MT is reactive towards intermediates generated from xenobiotic metabolism; and (ii) the metal (Zn, Cu) released from MT concomitant with the inactivation of metal …

Natural Lta Tumor Cell Resistance To Malignant Conversion By Oncogenesras Andmyc, Alan Bradley Tuck Jan 1991

Natural Lta Tumor Cell Resistance To Malignant Conversion By Oncogenesras Andmyc, Alan Bradley Tuck

Digitized Theses

A tumorigenic, non-metastatic murine fibroblast cell line (LTA) was here used to study aspects of natural cellular resistance to induction of progression to malignancy. The nature of LTA cell growth was established by testing both in vitro and in vivo. In vitro growth showed some but not all characteristic features of transformation (eg. cells showed little contact inhibition of cell growth and were able to multilayer, but were not serum independent). In vivo tumor growth was that of a benign (non-metastatic) fibrosarcoma. Attempts were made to induce LTA cell progression to malignancy by both epigenetic and genetic means. Treatment of …
