The Geology Of The Adair Marble Quarry Wiarton, Ontario, Julian V. Kanarek Jan 1986

The Geology Of The Adair Marble Quarry Wiarton, Ontario, Julian V. Kanarek

Digitized Theses

The Adair Marble Quarry is located 14 kilometres North of the Town of Wiarton on the East side of the Bruce Peninsula. This area is on the eastern margin of the Michigan Basin and the Middle Silurian dolostone extracted at the quarry is part of the concentric belts of Paleozoic formations that ring the Basin. The regional structure of the area is related to the Algonquin Arch, a basement feature attributed to progressive compressional and extensional stresses that are also responsible for the joint and fracture systems of the area. The present surface physiography was modified by the Wisconsin glaciation …

The Effects Of Training Reference Librarians In Interview Skills: A Field Experiment, Patricia Helen Dewdney Jan 1986

The Effects Of Training Reference Librarians In Interview Skills: A Field Experiment, Patricia Helen Dewdney

Digitized Theses

This field experiment investigated the effects of training librarians in communication skills appropriate for the reference interview. Two types of training were compared: neutral questioning, an approach based on extensive research into information-seeking behaviour (Dervin, 1977) and microskills, a counselling-based model adapted for librarians by Jennerich (1974). The study was designed as a 2 x 3 factorial experiment with a control group. The independent variables were time (before and after training) and the type of training. Outcome was assessed through satisfaction ratings assigned by library users, and through expert ratings of skills observed in transcribed reference interviews.;Twenty-four reference librarians from …

Ecological Aspects Of Growth And Development Of Jerusalem Artichoke (Helianthus Tuberosus L), Clarence James Swanton Jan 1986

Ecological Aspects Of Growth And Development Of Jerusalem Artichoke (Helianthus Tuberosus L), Clarence James Swanton

Digitized Theses

Jerusalem artichoke (Helianthus tuberosus L.) is a perennial species capable of reproduction by seed and of clonal growth from rhizomes and tubers. Natural populations are frequently found in highly unstable habitats, principally river and stream banks, man-disturbed waste areas and cultivated fields. It was postulated that variation among populations from different habitats, the allocation of resources within the plant during its life cycle and the regenerative potential of rhizomes and tubers from different soil depths may contribute to its ability to survive in a variety of habitats. Field and laboratory studies were conducted in 1982, 1983 and 1984 at the …

Functional Regions And Spatial Interaction: The Black/White Model, Valerian Titus Noronha Jan 1986

Functional Regions And Spatial Interaction: The Black/White Model, Valerian Titus Noronha

Digitized Theses

The functional region is usually conceptualized as a spatial partitioning that identifies communities of interest. Attempts at quantitative definition have mimicked analogous concepts in the social sciences, especially social clique identification. Although it is accepted that the functional region is based on human interaction, little attention has been paid to interaction modeling in the context of functional regions. This is partly because the spatial interaction model is not equipped to handle behavioral biases.;This research develops a model of spatial interaction that recognizes perceptual affinities or barriers between spatial units. Derived from the Luce and Tversky choice axioms, the Black/White Model …

Occupational Stress And Functioning Among Women Elementary School Teachers: A Model Including Personality Traits, Coping, Social Support And Life Stress, Lorna Maxine Earl Jan 1986

Occupational Stress And Functioning Among Women Elementary School Teachers: A Model Including Personality Traits, Coping, Social Support And Life Stress, Lorna Maxine Earl

Digitized Theses

In this study, a comprehensive questionnaire was developed and sent to a random sample, stratified by age and marital status, of 1160 women elementary school teachers in Ontario. The data derived from their responses provide a description of occupational stressors, social support structures, personality traits, coping mechanisms, major life events and health status for women elementary school teachers in Ontario. The relationships between occupational stress and physical and mental dysfunction, job satisfaction and job effectiveness were also examined within the context of a model that includes these other variables.;Occupational stressors are related to mental dysfunction, symptoms, job satisfaction and job …

Studies On The Effects Of Centrally Acting Drugs At Increased Pressures Of Air, G D. Fields Jan 1986

Studies On The Effects Of Centrally Acting Drugs At Increased Pressures Of Air, G D. Fields

Digitized Theses

This thesis examined the effect of selected "stimulant" and "depressant" drugs in mice and humans at increased pressures (4 and 7 ata) of air.;In mice, hyperbaric air acted to reduce amphetamine sulphate induced convulsive activity, lethality, and stereotyped licking/biting; in contrast, the locomotor stimulation was enhanced as was that produced by morphine suphate (15 and 30 mg/kg). With regard to the depressants, 7 ata air prolonged the sleep time induced by pentobarbital (45 mg/kg) but had no effect at the lower dose (35 mg/kg). Conversely exposure to hyperbaric air reduced the diphenhydramine (10, 20 mg/kg) - induced depression of activity, …

Radar Auroral Echo Heights As Seen By A 398 Mhz Phased Array Radar Operated At Homer, Alaska, John Michael Ruohoniemi Jan 1986

Radar Auroral Echo Heights As Seen By A 398 Mhz Phased Array Radar Operated At Homer, Alaska, John Michael Ruohoniemi

Digitized Theses

Backscatter data collected with a 398 MHz phased-array radar operated at Homer, Alaska (59.72 deg N, 151.53 deg W) have been analyzed for information on the height of radar auroral echoing. Altitude was resolved through the variation of backscattered power with antenna beam elevation angle. The mean height of backscattering could be determined with an accuracy of 1-2 km over small ((TURN)20 x 20 km('2)) areas and short ((TURN)1 min) periods. In this thesis, the results are presented in the form of maps of the spatial distribution of echo height.;The data base encompassed approximately 40 hrs of observation carried out …

A cohort study was carried out to compare the medical care provided for diarrhea, fever, and cough to children aged 6-59 months in villages with and without a village health worker.;It was expected that the DPT immunization coverage …

Foundations Of Logic Programming With Equality, Kwok Hung Chan Jan 1986

Foundations Of Logic Programming With Equality, Kwok Hung Chan

Digitized Theses

An obstacle to practical logic programming systems with equality is infinite computation. In the dissertation we study three strategies for eliminating infinite searches in Horn clause logic programming systems and develop an extension of Prolog that has the symmetry, transitivity and predicate substitutivity of equality built-in. The three strategies are: (1) Replacing logic programs with infinite search trees by equivalent logic programs with finite search trees; (2) Building into the inference machine the axioms that cause infinite search trees; (3) Detecting and failing searches of infinite branches.;The dissertation consists of two parts. General theories of the three strategies identified above …
