Methodologies Of Predicting Vegetation Response To The Environment And To Perturbation On A Regional Level: A Thesis In Three Parts Treating Temporal And Time Static Models, Peter Humphreys Fewster Jan 1985

Methodologies Of Predicting Vegetation Response To The Environment And To Perturbation On A Regional Level: A Thesis In Three Parts Treating Temporal And Time Static Models, Peter Humphreys Fewster

Digitized Theses

The reader of this thesis is presented with a view of Vegetation Science as a dynamic, developing field. Changes are seen as producing increased complexity in the methodology and increased emphasis on prediction. As pointed out in the text, early work has mainly been descriptive and the methods of analysis used were not so much prediction oriented as they were a vehicle for presenting current descriptions of vegetation structure and function. Method development is traced from the early descriptive schemes through more evolved ones which have reflected different and often opposing concepts of what vegetation is. The most noted are …

Nutritional Studies In Diabetic Cataract Prevention, Heather Ann Linklater Jan 1985

Nutritional Studies In Diabetic Cataract Prevention, Heather Ann Linklater

Digitized Theses

Cataract has been defined as an opacity of the lens leading to loss of visual acuity. This study was designed to find biochemical tests to measure the level of cataractogenesis occurring, and to use these tests to examine the efficacy of various dietary additives in preventing or reducing diabetic cataract formation.;A method was developed for determining ATP levels in tissue by measuring light emission produced by was homogenized in 2 ml of 8 M guanidium chloride to stabilize the ATP.;A radioimmunoassay was developed for rat lens (gamma)-crystallin using antiserum raised in rabbits. (gamma)-Crystallin was separated from the other water-soluble proteins …

On The Social Control Of Science, Glenn Gerard Griener Jan 1985

On The Social Control Of Science, Glenn Gerard Griener

Digitized Theses

Increases in science's ability to affect individuals' lives bring about calls for more direct social control over scientific research. Defenders of the scientific tradition usually counter these calls by suggesting (a) that any external control would mean the end of scientific enterprise, and (b) that such control would prove impractical. This dissertation investigates whether these suggestions can be developed into conclusive arguments.;One would expect that if sound arguments against social control are to be found, they will be found in the varied methodologies of science which litter the philosophical field. A scrutiny of several prominent methodologists' writings shows that this …

Provincial Restructuring Of Municipal Government: A Comparative Analysis Of New Brunswick And Nova Scotia, Harley Louis D'Entremont Jan 1985

Provincial Restructuring Of Municipal Government: A Comparative Analysis Of New Brunswick And Nova Scotia, Harley Louis D'Entremont

Digitized Theses

During the past twenty years, both Nova Scotia and New Brunswick established Royal Commissions which recommended large-scale reform in provincial-muncipal relations. The New Brunswick government implemented most of the reforms proposed whereas the Nova Scotia government did not. The different outcomes in the two provinces can be explained by focusing on certain characteristics of each province's decision-making structures and patterns of demand articulation, using Salisbury's approach.;This study shows that the theoretical elements contained in Salisbury's model are useful for the study of public policy, although refinements had to be made. The decisional system had to be defined in terms of …

The Managerial Approaches Of Chief Administrative Officers, William George Vance Jan 1985

The Managerial Approaches Of Chief Administrative Officers, William George Vance

Digitized Theses

This dissertation investigates the meaning of the common perceptions found among Chief Administrative Officers in a recent study, that the success of the CAO position and of the CAO system hinges upon the individual CAO's personal style.;The concept of style in the management and political psychology literatures is critically reviewed. Style is generally found to be either a trait or habit, or a name given to a particular set of responses to a style scale. Situational Leadership and The Managerial Grid are criticized.;The CAO's style is understood to mean the style of the CAO-in-the-organization. Style and organizational culture are elaborated, …

The Promise And Pursuit Of Scientific Theories, Laurie Anne Whitt Jan 1985

The Promise And Pursuit Of Scientific Theories, Laurie Anne Whitt

Digitized Theses

Recent research in philosophy of science suggests that the relationship which scientists have towards the artifacts of science, i.e. their theories, is considerably richer than many traditional accounts of scientific appraisal would lead us to believe. Problem-solving methodologists, in particular, advocating a pragmatic account of scientific theories, argue that traditional methodologies have tended to focus exclusively on one modality of appraisal--that of theory acceptance, and have advanced normative proposals which provide only for assessments of the empirical well-foundedness of scientific theories. As a result, it is held, these traditional accounts are unable to accommodate certain historical cases in which conceptual …

The Development Of Cardiac Hypertrophy During Sub-Chronic Ethanol Intoxication: The Role Of Adrenal Medullary Catecholamines, Michael Anthony Adams Jan 1985

The Development Of Cardiac Hypertrophy During Sub-Chronic Ethanol Intoxication: The Role Of Adrenal Medullary Catecholamines, Michael Anthony Adams

Digitized Theses

The development of cardiac hypertrophy and other changes were examined during sub-chronic ethanol intoxication in Sprague-Dawley rats. Several experimental manipulations were evaluated: adrenal medullectomy, peripheral sympathectomy and the administration of adrenergic antagonists, prazosin and metoprolol. Ethanol, given by gavage every eight hours for up to 96 hours, maintained the rats in an ataxic state. It was found that adrenal cortical tissue hypertrophied after ethanol exposure. The release of adrenal medullary catecholamines was stimulated, producing a decline in contents, particularly of adrenaline, which was reflected in elevations in urinary catecholamines. Cardiac noradrenaline levels were reduced. These changes were paralleled by cardiac …

Myelin Lipids In The Induction And Suppression Of Experimental Allergic Encephalomyelitis, Zobeeda Zanimun Hosein Jan 1985

Myelin Lipids In The Induction And Suppression Of Experimental Allergic Encephalomyelitis, Zobeeda Zanimun Hosein

Digitized Theses

Hartley guinea pig central nervous system (CNS) myelin was purified and fractionated. Both lyophilized and "wet" myelin induced chronic experimental allergic encephalomyelitis (EAE) in juvenile strain 13/N guinea pigs. Total myelin lipids (TL), galactocerebrosides (GC), gangliosides (GANG), phospholipids or proteolipids in association with a non-encephalitogenic dose (2ug) of MBP did not induce EAE; however, in MBP-TL animals, cell-mediated immune responses (CMI) were augmented. Only the proteolipids elicited delayed hypersensitivity. When TL was associated with an encephalitogenic dose (50ug) of MBP in CFA, juvenile strain 13 animals developed acute EAE with 100% recovery and 50% relapses.;Combinations of 50ug MBP and GC …

Federal Regional Policy: A Process Analysis, Brian Richard Anderson Jan 1985

Federal Regional Policy: A Process Analysis, Brian Richard Anderson

Digitized Theses

The purpose of this study is to outline and analyze the process leading to the signing of regional development agreements between the federal Department of Regional Economic Expansion (DREE) and the provinces of Saskatchewan and British Columbia. The agreements were signed as subsidiary to General Development Agreements (GDAs) entered into with each of the provinces. The study examines a series of these subsidiary agreements signed between 1974 and 1980 in order to determine some of the forces helping to shape regional policy, to characterize working relationships and to consider the implications of particular administrative structures and processes.;The research is based …
