Influence Of Host Factors On Phosphatidylcholine Synthesis In Schistosoma Mansoni, Bruce William Young Jan 1984

Influence Of Host Factors On Phosphatidylcholine Synthesis In Schistosoma Mansoni, Bruce William Young

Digitized Theses

This study provides information concerning the factors involved in regulating apical bilayer formation and turnover in the human parasite Schistosoma mansoni. The major phospholipid of cercaria, adults and the outer bilayer and plasma membrane of the apical bilayer complex of the adult parasites is phosphatidylcholine. Phosphatidylcholine was synthesized through the incorporation of choline but not through the methylation of phosphatidylethanolamine.;The uptake and incorporation of choline into phosphatidylcholine by adult S. mansoni was examined in the presence of a variety of sera, hormonal and pharmacologic factors. The examination of sera from a number of sources revealed that permissiveness to infection was …

The Whole Of The Same Universe: Science And Transcendence In "Fifth Business" And "Surfacing", Nancy Evelyn Bjerring Jan 1984

The Whole Of The Same Universe: Science And Transcendence In "Fifth Business" And "Surfacing", Nancy Evelyn Bjerring

Digitized Theses

This study examines two Canadian novels, Robertson Davies' Fifth Business and Margaret Atwood's Surfacing, in order to show how each deals with an important theme in Canadian literature. This theme is the clash between two world-views, which I am calling the scientific world-view and the transcendent world-view. The treatment of this theme has been undertaken by both writers in the form of displaced romance, a fictional genre employing conventions of character, plot and theme in a manner less impeded than realism by the demands of ordinary experience.;Chapters One and Two analyse romance and define the two world-views. With the help …

Characteristics Of Human Cytotoxic Lymphocytes Specific For Haptenic And Non-Major Histocompatibility Complex (Mhc) Cell Surface Antigens, Michael John Ward Jan 1984

Characteristics Of Human Cytotoxic Lymphocytes Specific For Haptenic And Non-Major Histocompatibility Complex (Mhc) Cell Surface Antigens, Michael John Ward

Digitized Theses

Cell mediated immune responses (CMIR), mediated by T-lymphocytes, have been shown to play a role in tumour immunity and allograft rejection. Studies of specific cytotoxic responses indicate that the cells involved in the CMIR are capable of recognizing various cell surface markers. Although many investigations have been conducted the exact nature of the target antigens are not known.;Sensitization of human T cells in Marbrook tissue culture vessels and microtitre trays resulted in the production of effector cells capable of lysing certain target cells. The characterization of the reactivity of these cells was carried out in two systems, the first in …

Local Government And National Development: Fragmentation And Centralization In Lesotho, Sefora Thakane-Masia Jan 1984

Local Government And National Development: Fragmentation And Centralization In Lesotho, Sefora Thakane-Masia

Digitized Theses

Development debates have been going on since the beginning of the 1960's. Development models have been proposed and tried in many developing countries, but it seems that in spite of all those efforts, rural people in such countries are experiencing less development and increased hardship. The current trend in the development literature is therefore laying emphasis on rural development. While the emphasis has changed, the methods have not. Governments, scholars and professionals make major decisions on rural development and expect the rural people to implement those decisions. Current studies are also directed toward solutions of rural development problems within an …

Eskimo Housing Programmes, 1954-65: A Case Study Of Representative Bureaucracy, Patrick Gerald Nixon Jan 1984

Eskimo Housing Programmes, 1954-65: A Case Study Of Representative Bureaucracy, Patrick Gerald Nixon

Digitized Theses

The concept of representative bureaucracy is used in this study to understand the reasons for the development of Eskimo housing programmes in Canada between 1954 and 1965 and to evaluate their effectiveness.;The study argues that, in the absence of the Canadian federal public service's taking an advocacy/representative position vis a vis Canada's Eskimo peoples, the historic government policy of doing little for northerners would likely have continued. Nevertheless, because public servants for various reasons failed to involve Eskimo people in the decision making which affected their lives, the legitimacy of a representative bureaucracy was challenged within the public service and …

Probabilistic Causality And The Foundations Of Modern Science, Malcolm Richard Forster Jan 1984

Probabilistic Causality And The Foundations Of Modern Science, Malcolm Richard Forster

Digitized Theses

Van Fraassen, in The Scientific Image, uses Reichenbach's Principle of Common Cause to state the realist's position on scientific research strategies. Van Fraassen then claims, on the basis of his version of Bell's argument, that quantum mechanics is a couterexample to the doctrine of realism. This construal of realism is not adequate, and a more adequate formulation is developed in the first chapter of this thesis. The essential strategy of science, it is argued, is to aim for a greater unification of its concepts. An attempt is made in chapter 1 to capture this notion using the formal ideas of …

Jeremy Bentham On The Utility Of Religion And The Church Of England, James Edward Crimmins Jan 1984

Jeremy Bentham On The Utility Of Religion And The Church Of England, James Edward Crimmins

Digitized Theses

The dissertation provides a comprehensive study of the neglected religious writings, published and unpublished, of Jeremy Bentham. The origin, character, and purpose of his thoughts on religion have been misunderstood by scholars in the past. The first five chapters are devoted to an interpretive account of the importance of the religious writings and how they are to be understood. The second chapter is a history of Bentham's emerging unbelief, his early disaffection with organised religion, and his subsequent systematic attack on religion in general in later life. In the third chapter the conventional interpretive accounts of the religious writings which …

Case Grammar And Functional Relations In Aboutness Recognition And Relevance Decision-Making In The Bibliographic Retrieval Environment, Dee Ann Lewis Jan 1984

Case Grammar And Functional Relations In Aboutness Recognition And Relevance Decision-Making In The Bibliographic Retrieval Environment, Dee Ann Lewis

Digitized Theses

One of the most perplexing problems in Information Science has been definition of central concepts such as 'relevance' and 'information' at a theoretical level which incorporates and accounts for all known attributes of the concepts and the principles which underlie their particular application in this field. The objective of this thesis was to determine whether one definition of relevance, 'aboutness', can be based, at least in part, on textual characteristics of queries and abstracts. To this end, this study was conducted to determine to what extent a set of functional relations based on Fillmore's case grammar theory could be used …

The Metabolism And Toxicology Of Manganese, Anton Michael Scheuhammer Jan 1984

The Metabolism And Toxicology Of Manganese, Anton Michael Scheuhammer

Digitized Theses

Since manganese (Mn) is both an essential trace metal and, under conditions of excess exposure, a neurotoxic metal, it is important to reach a clearer understanding of how Mn is absorbed, distributed, accumulated, and excreted, as well as to determine the effects of Mn on various metabolic processes, particularly in the brain.;In the present series of studies, Mn was administered to rats via injection (ip or iv), or orally in drinking water.;Mn administered as a single iv dose was recovered primarily from the bile and liver, which together comprised about 80% of the recovered dose, 3 hrs after administration. Mn …
