Impact Of Conflict On Medical Education: A Cross-Sectional Survey Of Students And Institutions In Iraq, Ashton Barnett-Vanes, Sondus Hassounah, Marwan Shawki, Omar Abdulkadir Ismail, Chi Fung, Tara Kedia, Salman Rawaf, Azeem Majeed

Dartmouth Scholarship

Objective: This study surveyed all Iraqi medical schools and a cross-section of Iraqi medical students regarding their institutional and student experiences of medical education amidst ongoing conflict. The objective was to better understand the current resources and challenges facing medical schools, and the impacts of conflict on the training landscape and student experience, to provide evidence for further research and policy development. Setting: Deans of all Iraqi medical schools registered in the World Directory of Medical Schools were invited to participate in a survey electronically. Medical students from three Iraqi medical schools were invited to participate in a survey electronically. …

The Future Of Global Health Education: Training For Equity In Global Health, Lisa V. Adams, Claire M. Wagner, Cameron T. Nutt, Agnes Binagwaho Nov 2016

The Future Of Global Health Education: Training For Equity In Global Health, Lisa V. Adams, Claire M. Wagner, Cameron T. Nutt, Agnes Binagwaho

Dartmouth Scholarship

Background:

Among academic institutions in the United States, interest in global health has grown substantially: by the number of students seeking global health opportunities at all stages of training, and by the increase in institutional partnerships and newly established centers, institutes, and initiatives to house global health programs at undergraduate, public health and medical schools. Witnessing this remarkable growth should compel health educators to question whether the training and guidance that we provide to students today is appropriate, and whether it will be applicable in the next decade and beyond. Given that “global health” did not exist as an academic …

Gender Representation In The Vision Sciences: A Longitudinal Study, Emily A. Cooper, Ana Radonjic Jan 2016

Gender Representation In The Vision Sciences: A Longitudinal Study, Emily A. Cooper, Ana Radonjic

Dartmouth Scholarship

Understanding the current status and historical trends of gender representation within a research field is an important component of fostering a diverse and inclusive scientific community. Here, we report on the gender representation of a large sample of the vision science research community—the attendees of the Annual Meeting of the Vision Sciences Society (VSS). Our analysis shows that the majority of scientists at all career levels in our sample are male. This imbalance is most pronounced for the senior scientists, whereas predoctoral students are nearly balanced between the genders. Historically, the gender imbalance was larger than it is at present, …

Exposure To Movie Reckless Driving In Early Adolescence Predicts Reckless, But Not Inattentive Driving, Evelien Kostermans, Mike Stoolmiller, Rebecca N. H De Leeuw, Rutger C. M. E Engels, James D. Sargent Dec 2014

Exposure To Movie Reckless Driving In Early Adolescence Predicts Reckless, But Not Inattentive Driving, Evelien Kostermans, Mike Stoolmiller, Rebecca N. H De Leeuw, Rutger C. M. E Engels, James D. Sargent

Dartmouth Scholarship

Objective: We examine the association between exposure to depictions of reckless driving in movies and unsafe driving, modeling inattentive and reckless driving as separate outcomes. Methods: Data were obtained by telephone from 1,630 US adolescents aged 10 to 14 years at baseline who were drivers at a survey 6 years later. Exposure to movie reckless driving was measured based on movies seen from a randomly selected list of 50 movie titles that had been content coded for reckless driving among characters. Associations were tested with inattentive and reckless driving behaviors in the subsequent survey–controlling for baseline age, sex, socioeconomic status, …

Teaching Parallel Computing To Freshmen, Donald Johnson, David Kotz, Fillia Makedon Jun 1994

Teaching Parallel Computing To Freshmen, Donald Johnson, David Kotz, Fillia Makedon

Dartmouth Scholarship

Parallelism is the future of computing and computer science and should therefore be at the heart of the CS curriculum. Instead of continuing along the evolutionary path by introducing parallel computation “top down” (first in special junior-senior level courses), we are taking a radical approach and introducing parallelism at the earliest possible stages of instruction. Specifically, we are developing a completely new freshman-level course on data structures that integrates parallel computation naturally, and retains the emphasis on laboratory instruction. This will help to steer our curriculum as expeditiously as possible toward parallel computing.

Our approach is novel in three distinct …
