There are two opportunities to "Be in Barnard" this week. Starting at noon on Wednesday, Sept. 11 Carrie Barske Crawford and Brian Dempsey present "Hidden Spaces," and at 4 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 12, Edmund T. Gordon and Celeste Henery present "Exploring the Racial Geography of UT-Austin." Both events will be held in the Tupelo Room of Barnard Observatory.

This fall, southern studies launches its new master of fine arts in documentary expression program. The goal of this new program is to teach students who already possess considerable skill and experience in documentary techniques and interdisciplinary scholarship to produce documentary films, photography, or audio projects of high quality. The background for this idea is that the southern studies MA program has graduated numerous students who, as they complete the program, say they wish they had the time and attention to apply their newly learned skills to a polished project.

Southern Studies Professor Jodi Skipper Receives Prestigious Whiting Fellowship, Admin

OXFORD, Miss. Fresh off winning this year's Mississippi Humanities Council's Scholar Award, University of Mississippi professor Jodi Skipper has received another accolade, this one a national honor. Skipper, assistant professor of anthropology and Southern studies, has been awarded a prestigious Whiting Public Engagement Fellowship from the Whiting Foundation, a Brooklyn, New York-based organization that has a long history of support for the humanities and literature.
