Culturally Diverse End-Of-Life Simulation And Perceptions In Undergraduate Nursing Students, Jodi Kay Olson, Mary Pesch, Julie Keller-Dornbusch
Biennial Convention (CONV)
End-of-life (EOL) patient care is a challenging reality that nearly all nurses will face during their careers. Preparing nursing students for these situations can alleviate anxieties related to patient death (Venkatasalu et al., 2015). Simulation-based learning is an effective approach for teaching complex scenarios like EOL care (Cannity et al., 2021), with numerous studies highlighting improved confidence and competence in students who participate in EOL simulations (Gillan et al., 2014; Tamaki et al., 2019; Venkatasalu et al., 2015; Lewis et al., 2016; Jablonski et al., 2020). However, the lack of cross-cultural variations in death and dying highlights the need for …

Nurse And Patient Spiritual Care Perspectives Compared: A Cross-National Collaboration, Pamela H. Cone, Tove Giske
Biennial Convention (CONV)
Findings from a two-phased mixed-method 2014 study done in Norway on nurse and patient perspectives about spiritual care were compared for commonalities and differences. Nurses and patients have similar comfort levels with many deeply personal questions, but some surprises reveal opposing views. Nurses need a better understanding of patient perspectives.

Efficacy Of A Collaborative, Spiritual Care Educational Intervention To Enhance Nurses' Spiritual Care Attitudes, Cheryl A. Westlake, Jane Pfeiffer
Biennial Convention (CONV)
Patients' spiritual needs can be addressed by nurses; however, spiritual-care provision barriers include nurses' spiritual-care attitudes. The abstract describes the efficacy of a hospital nurse researcher/university faculty member-provided two-hour/spiritual-care intervention using values clarification/spiritual timeline exercises, and content regarding spirituality/spiritual needs/spiritual-care interventions with case study application to enhance nurses' spiritual-care attitudes.

Assessment Of Community Health By Neighborhood And Church Collaboration, Jane Pfeiffer, Cheryl A. Westlake
Biennial Convention (CONV)
Using Ryan's (2009) Integrated Theory of Health Behavior Change, this collaboratively conducted (neighborhood/church/university ) community-based participatory action research assessed San Bernardino, California residents' individual physical/mental/social/spiritual health and their relationships as perceptions of community health. Findings support the need for nursing and faith-based institutions to collaborate in support of community health.

Applying Predictive Analytics At The Bedside To Reduce Mortality And Facilitate Transitions Of Care, Christine A. Sullivan, Janice E. Marlett
Applying Predictive Analytics At The Bedside To Reduce Mortality And Facilitate Transitions Of Care, Christine A. Sullivan, Janice E. Marlett
Biennial Convention (CONV)
Recognizing early changes in a patient's condition is essential to saving lives. This large urban facility successfully reduced mortality, increased situational awareness, and supported appropriate transitions of care. Utilizing a validated predictive analytics tool, nurses and providers identify patient decline earlier and intervene to reduce cardiac arrest outside the ICU.

Nurse's Comfort In Palliative Care: A National Survey, Amisha Parekh De Campos, Kyounghae Kim
Biennial Convention (CONV)
A cross-sectional survey of nurses in the United States showed comfort in caring for palliative and hospice care patients required at least five years of experience. Even after five years, opportunity existed to increase comfort levels. Training registered nurses in advance care planning should be a priority in patient care.

Cultural Relevancy Of Palliative And End-Of-Life Care: Conversations With Indigenous Elders, Mary J. Isaacson
Biennial Convention (CONV)
Session presented on Monday, November 9, 2015:
Purpose: Access to palliative and end-of-life (EOL) care is severely limited for South Dakota (SD) Native American/American Indians [NA/AI] (Isaacson et al., 2014), which is of significant concern given their high morbidity and mortality rates (SD Vital Statistics Report, 2012). Palliative care professionals and NA/AI healthcare providers identify funding, infrastructure, and misperceptions specific to the NA/AI population and palliative/EOL care as barriers to access (Isaacson et al., 2014). Addressing these barriers and feasibility concerns must occur by bringing together key individuals and include persons receptive to the voices and concerns of NA/AIs residing …

Session presented on Monday, November 9, 2015:
Background: "Nurse leaders face a crucial need to understand and take initiative in responding to this radically changing world" (McElmurry, Kim, & Al Gasseer, 2000). It is often a challenge for nurse leaders to develop a diverse world view without interacting with nurse leaders in a global context (Nichols, Shaffer, & Porter, 2011). Objectives: The Global Nursing Initiative aims: a) to make contributions to the advancement of nursing leadership, clinical practice, and nursing education in Japan; b) to establish an international collaboration between Saint Anthony College of Nursing (SACN) and Japanese higher education …

Biennial Convention (CONV)
Session presented on Monday, November 9, 2015:
Purpose and Research Questions: The purpose of this study was to assess the impact of nursing interventions on a skilled nursing unit (SNU) when a change in patient health status was identified. Patient characteristics were correlated with specific variables such as Rothman Index (RI) scores and 30-day readmission status. Nurses could then implement specific individualized interventions to improve patient outcomes. The study questions were: a) What are the characteristics of our SNU patients? and b) Can use of the RI discharge score alert the nurse to the need for increased interventions to lower …
Reiki: A Complementary, Biofield Therapy For Management Of Postoperative Pain, Robin Toms
Reiki: A Complementary, Biofield Therapy For Management Of Postoperative Pain, Robin Toms
Biennial Convention (CONV)
There is increasing interest in complementary and alternative therapies that do not rely on expensive, invasive technology, and are holistic in focus. Such therapies could improve pain management in the poorest of countries globally. Research has shown the benefits of combining conventional, Western, pain management with CAM (Olson, 2003; Gillespie, 2007; Olson, 2003; Vitale, 2006 ;). Reiki, a complementary therapy, is a form of energy therapy in which the focus of the practitioner, with or without light touch, is believed to access universal energy sources that can assist in balancing the biofield and strengthening the body's ability to heal itself …
