Water, Roads, And Mapping Diaspora Through Biomythography, Lia T. Bascomb Jun 2017

Water, Roads, And Mapping Diaspora Through Biomythography, Lia T. Bascomb

Anthurium: A Caribbean Studies Journal

African diaspora studies has sought to map the historical moments, cultural practices, political considerations, and geographical and conceptual spaces that constitute the African diaspora. This article explores how biomythography can possibly map African diaspora discourse beyond the temporal and the spatial. Triangular Road connects diasporic movement and misunderstanding. It uses the concept of bodies of water to map Marshall’s life path. It crosses the lines of official nation-state representations, social gatherings, and international …

The Poetics And Politics Of Afro-Cuban Carnival, Emily A. Maguire Apr 2013

The Poetics And Politics Of Afro-Cuban Carnival, Emily A. Maguire

Anthurium: A Caribbean Studies Journal

Thomas F. Anderson’s nuanced and meticulously researched study adds to recent scholarship on Afrocubanismo as it sheds new light on a previously unexplored group of texts: poems dealing with Cuban carnival celebrations. By looking at poems about comparsas published between 1916 and 1950, Anderson’s book illuminates the ways in which race and national identity were being negotiated – both on the page and in the street – during Cuba’s first decades as a nation. Even as these poems about comparsas chronicle the arrival and development of Afrocubanismo as an artistic movement, they also reveal the reservations and inconsistencies in writers’ …
