A Case Study Of Complex Systems In Leadership In Higher Education Fundraising, J. Michael Bonnette
A Case Study Of Complex Systems In Leadership In Higher Education Fundraising, J. Michael Bonnette
All Dissertations
Institutions of higher education are more focused on raising private funds today than ever before. This need to increase funding has provided opportunity for emergent behavior among all levels of the institution and has provided an opportunity for the study of leadership among those responsible for managing the fundraising operation. This study will endeavor to understand the emergent enabling and adapting leadership in an institution of higher education during a change to a centralized fundraising model. A case study approach will build a narrative of interaction among those involved in the change and develop insight through the lens of Complexity …
South Carolina Public High Schools: Leadership, Network Dynamics And Innovation, Brandon Blackwell
South Carolina Public High Schools: Leadership, Network Dynamics And Innovation, Brandon Blackwell
All Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to identify and model the role of leaders in a complex organization. This paper analyzed the spread of innovations through use of Complexity Theory, Complexity Leadership Theory, and Social Network Theory. Complexity Leadership Theory suggests that certain 'conditions', 'attractors', or relationships must be present during the early stages of innovation, causing the emergence of innovation, long before an innovation reaches institutionalization. A Dynamic Network Analysis will be used to explore the inner workings and relationships that are present that influence the innovation as it moves through from emergence to possible institutionalization.
The Process By Which Black Male College Students Become Leaders Of Predominantly White Organizations In Higher Education: A Grounded Theory, Eric Moschella
The Process By Which Black Male College Students Become Leaders Of Predominantly White Organizations In Higher Education: A Grounded Theory, Eric Moschella
All Dissertations
This study sought to understand the process by which Black undergraduate men on predominately White college campuses become leaders of predominately White organizations. Using the theoretical frameworks of Black and White racial identity development (Helms, 1990), Critical Race Theory (Delgado & Stefancic, 2001), and Wijeyesinghe's (2001) Factor Model of Multiracial Identity the researcher sought to understand the process, challenges, and strategies Black college men employ as they emerge as leaders at predominantly White colleges. Specifically the researcher sought to answer the following research question: What is the process by which Black men become leaders of predominately White organizations on predominately …
A Dynamic Network Analysis Of Vision In Complex Organizations, Jon Christiansen
A Dynamic Network Analysis Of Vision In Complex Organizations, Jon Christiansen
All Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to model the role of vision in a complex organization and the roles that agents, tasks, knowledge, roles, resources and beliefs play. For this purpose, an investigation into the current structure of this model is conducted. Additionally, this study sought to develop a better understanding of how agent's individual vision and beliefs about the organizational vision can be influenced over time. This purpose sought to identify the evolution of vision, therefore, required a method that simulates how these entities change over time. Dynamic Network Analysis was utilized to capture an understanding of the existing …
A Structural Equation Model Of Leader Attributes In The Principalship, Amy Young
A Structural Equation Model Of Leader Attributes In The Principalship, Amy Young
All Dissertations
To become a principal in South Carolina, one must have teaching experience, a master's degree, and certification in the area of primary responsibility. Beyond what is learned through coursework, internships, and certification tests, what intangible factors critically influence a principal's actions and decisions, and (ultimately) success? Trait theory begs the question of whether any of these criteria truly influences the decisions and actions of the principalship. Are there interactive traits of leadership that describe the behaviors of school principals? This study revisits trait theory by examining leader attributes relative to the principalship of South Carolina public schools. This study replicates, …
An Examination Of Heritage Resource Internship Experiences And Land Management Agency's Role In Inspiring Emerging Leaders, Carin Vadala
An Examination Of Heritage Resource Internship Experiences And Land Management Agency's Role In Inspiring Emerging Leaders, Carin Vadala
All Dissertations
To address the shortage of people seeking to fill employment vacancies, the land management agencies are using the Student Conservation Association (SCA) and internships as a means of recruiting the next generation of leaders. Yet little research has been conducted on internships in cultural and natural heritage resource parks. This study used a two-phase linear exploratory method to investigate the experiences of cultural and natural heritage resource interns. Additionally, the study sought to determine if and how internships shape vocational, recreational, social and personal identities concerning parks and protected areas. Using significant life experiences, environmental socialization and emerging adulthood theories, …
Examining The Dynamics Of Managing Information Systems Development Projects: A Control Loss Perspective, Ravi Narayanaswamy
Examining The Dynamics Of Managing Information Systems Development Projects: A Control Loss Perspective, Ravi Narayanaswamy
All Dissertations
The failure rate of information systems development (ISD) projects continues to pose a big challenge for organizations. The success rate of ISD projects is less then forty percent. Factors such as disagreements and miscommunications among project manager and team members, poor monitoring and intermediary problems contribute to project failure.
Agency theory and leader member exchange (LMX) theories offer potential explanations for project failure. In particular, three monitoring strategies - control strategy, decision rights, and influence tactics were found to be effective in promoting project success. LMX theorists suggest that achieving congruence between the manager and subordinate regarding each other actions …
Personality Predictors Of Motivation To Lead, Tracey Tafero
Personality Predictors Of Motivation To Lead, Tracey Tafero
All Dissertations
In recent years, there has been a renewed interest in understanding the relationship between personality traits and leadership. Recent research suggests that some personality variables are related to leadership. However, research has rarely examined the process by which personality may impact leadership. This study explores the relationship between personality and motivation to lead, a proposed intervening variable between personality and leadership. In addition, this study looks at both broad and narrow measures of personality as predictors of motivation to lead. The current study both replicates and extends the findings of Chan & Drasgow (2001). Results reveal that facet-level personality scales …
