Testing The Underlying Chemical Principles Of The Biotic Ligand Model (Blm) To Marine Copper Systems: Measuring Copper Speciation Using Fluorescence Quenching, Tara N. Tait, James C. Mcgeer, Scott Smith
Testing The Underlying Chemical Principles Of The Biotic Ligand Model (Blm) To Marine Copper Systems: Measuring Copper Speciation Using Fluorescence Quenching, Tara N. Tait, James C. Mcgeer, Scott Smith
Chemistry Faculty Publications
Speciation of copper in marine systems strongly influences the ability of copper to cause toxicity. Natural organic matter (NOM) contains many binding sites which provides a protective effect on copper toxicity. The purpose of this study was to characterize copper binding with NOM using fluorescence quenching techniques. Fluorescence quenching of NOM with copper was performed on nine sea water samples. The resulting stability con- stants and binding capacities were consistent with literature values of marine NOM, show- ing strong binding with log K values from 7.64 to 10.2 and binding capacities ranging from 15 to 3110 nmole mg C −1 …

Canada In A Climate Disrupted World, Simon Dalby, Daniel Scott, Clay Dasilva, Alex Suen
Geography and Environmental Studies Faculty Publications
Climate change has already begun impacting economies and societies across the globe, and its impacts are expected to increase into the future. Adaptation to climate change is and will continue to be one of the greatest policy challenges facing the Canadian government. However, im- portant and much-needed work on understanding the future of climate change has not yet been completed. Gaps remain in the body of academic, government, and other policy-relevant publications. Specifically, there is a relative paucity of research done on the indirect impacts of climate change on Canada. These external impacts outside of Canada’s borders may have second-order …

The purpose of this study is to develop a climate change (CC) prepared inter-community service sharing strategy (ICSS) targeted to rural Ontario communities that capitalizes on infrastructure assessments that are undertaken through the asset management process (AMP). AMP is defined by the Ontario government as “…. the process of making the best possible decisions regarding the building, operating, maintaining, renewing, replacing and disposing of infrastructure assets. It helps prioritize infrastructure needs and ensures that investments are made in the right place and at the right time to minimize future repair and rehabilitation costs.” The objective of AMPs are to maximize …

No. 12: Compounding Vulnerability: A Model Of Urban Household Food Security, Cameron Mccordic
Hungry Cities Partnership
The efficiency of the infrastructure systems in cities will define the extent to which dystopic visions of urban futures become a reality. At the level of the individual household, vulnerability to hazards in cities is defined, in part, by the ability to access essential resources and services. This discussion paper proposes a model to help explain the relationship between access to urban infrastructure systems and household vulnerability to food insecurity. Food access in cities is primarily achieved through food purchases, where households convert assets into food at retail locations. When a household falls into food insecurity through trading household assets …

The Liberation Of Groningen: The Diary Account Of Theo Polman, Greg Sennema
The Liberation Of Groningen: The Diary Account Of Theo Polman, Greg Sennema
Canadian Military History
The city of Groningen in the Netherlands was liberated by the 2nd Canadian Infantry Division during the final month of the Second World War. While the battle was not significant to the outcome of the war, the combat was nonetheless significant for both the participants, as well as the citizens who lived through four days of fierce street fighting. Using his grandfather’s detailed diary, and with references to the War Diaries of some of the battalions involved, the author describes the experience of one family that huddled in their home through the battle, and their interactions with Canadian soldiers after …

The Effects Of Assisted Voluntary Return Programs On Marginalized Women: A Critique Of The Iom And Unhcr, Annalisa Lochan
Laurier Undergraduate Journal of the Arts
This paper examines the evolution of the International Organization for Migration (IOM) and the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) from humanitarian agencies to migration management bodies through the use of Assisted Voluntary Return (AVR) Programs to repatriate asylum seekers. In this paper, I argue that the normative shift toward the use of AVRs by International Organizations (IOs) is detrimental to Global South migrant women because it presents them with a forced decision to return to their countries of origin in exchange for money at the cost of surrendering their access to the refugee regime.

“Under Fathoms Of Salt Water:” Canada’S Ammunition Dumping Program, 1944-1947, Alex Souchen
Canadian Military History
This article examines Canada’s ammunition dumping program in the mid-1940s and pays special attention to the practical and technical dilemmas that influenced policy making and implementation. A pressing logistical crisis followed the end of the Second World War as crowded armaments depots ran out of storage space for leftover ordnance. In July 1945 a major explosion at the Bedford Magazine in Halifax Harbour heightened public safety concerns and influenced future disposal policies. From a range of imperfect destruction methods, dumping emerged as one of the most efficient alternatives; whenever possible conventional and chemical munitions were submerged. Although the quantities sunk …
Storying Gendered Violence: Indigenous Understandings Of The Interconnectedness Of Violence, Josie Nelson
Storying Gendered Violence: Indigenous Understandings Of The Interconnectedness Of Violence, Josie Nelson
Social Justice and Community Engagement
The research and scholarship of gendered violence on university campuses is growing; however, there is currently limited to no research exploring the experiences of Indigenous peoples, particularly women and two-spirit, non-binary and transgender students. To advance the knowledge of the interconnectedness of violence, I conducted two focus groups with six Indigenous women staff at Wilfrid Laurier University. This research, informed by Indigenous feminism and storytelling methodologies, shares their understandings of how colonial and gendered violence cannot be understood independent from one another. Participants also provide insight into the needed supports on campus for Indigenous students who have experienced gendered violence. …
Not So Neet: A Critical Policy Analysis Of Ontario's Youth Job Connection Program, Lindy Bancroft
Not So Neet: A Critical Policy Analysis Of Ontario's Youth Job Connection Program, Lindy Bancroft
Social Justice and Community Engagement
The Ontario government has identified youth unemployment as a central societal problem that it seeks to address through policy measures. It has recently switched its focus from assisting all youth towards assisting NEET youth (neither in employment, education or training), as is demonstrated in the current youth employment policy Youth Job Connection (YJC), which began in the fall of 2015. This MRP situates YJC as part of a broader trend away from designing youth policy as an explicit form of social control to a seemingly more positive approach of youth development. Using this example, it showcases the continuities between the …
"An Aura Of Disbelief:" Rape Mythology And Victim Blaming In The Legal Response To Disclosure Of Sexual Violence, Lauren Parcher
"An Aura Of Disbelief:" Rape Mythology And Victim Blaming In The Legal Response To Disclosure Of Sexual Violence, Lauren Parcher
Social Justice and Community Engagement
This research study focuses on sexual violence (SV) in Canada, which one in three women will experience during their lives. Yet, even though the prevalence of violence against women in Canada is so significant, only one in ten survivors will report their experience of SV to the criminal justice system (CJS). Previous literature has identified the limited number of reports to authorities in Canada as being related to rape mythology. Due to the influence of rape mythology, a notion of a “good versus bad victim” is often used to deem which survivors are innocent and credible versus responsible or blamed …

Is a picture worth a thousand words? This paper discusses a unique science outreach initiative–provocative photo-research exhibits on sexism in science.
Gender imbalance in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) is not only a concern from a social justice perspective, but also has negative consequences for scientific innovation and the economy, given that lack of workplace gender diversity is associated with lower revenue and returns. Science outreach (i.e., public outreach by scientists) could be particularly impactful in Waterloo, Ontario – a region known as ‘Canada’s Silicon Valley’ that contributes over $30-billion annually to the global economy. Portraying complex social issues …

Giving Credit: How Well Do Librarians Cite And Quote Their Sources?, Peter Genzinger, Deborah Wills
Library Publications
The practice of citing references is integral to scholarship. This paper focuses on three prominent journals for library science: College and Research Libraries, Library Resources and Technical Services, and Reference and User Services Quarterly. Errors in both citations and quotations were found in all three journals, although no statistically significant differences among journals were discovered. Citation errors of less than 10 percent were found for all three journals, while in total, 30.3 percent of quotations were judged to be questionable in some way. The paper includes recommendations for authors, editors and librarians. It also recommends further study of errors in …

Copper(Ii)- And Gold(Iii)-Mediated Cyclization Of A Thiourea To A Substituted 2-Aminobenzothiazole, Zachary W. Schroeder, L. K. Hiscock, Louise N. Dawe
Chemistry Faculty Publications
Benzothiazole derivatives are a class of privileged molecules due to their biological activity and pharmaceutical applications. One route to these molecules is via intramolecular cyclization of thioureas to form substituted 2-aminobenzothiazoles, but this often requires harsh conditions or employs expensive metal catalysts. Herein, the copper(II)- and gold(III)-mediated cyclizations of thioureas to substituted 2-aminobenzothiazoles are reported. The single-crystal X-ray structures of the thiourea N-(3-methoxyphenyl)-N'- (pyridin-2-yl)thiourea, C13H13N3OS, and the intermediate metal complexes aquabis[5-methoxy-N-(pyridin-2-yl-κN)-1,3-benzothiazol-2-amine-κN3]copper(II) dinitrate, [Cu(C13H11N3OS)2(H2O)](NO3) …

Desert Pool {If Every Desert Was Once A Sea}, Karen Miranda Abel
The Goose
Desert Pool {If every desert was once a sea} is a site-specific art project by Canadian artist Karen Miranda Abel completed in 2016 while artist-in-residence at Joya: arte + ecología, an arts-led research centre situated in an alpine desert within a national park in southern Spain. The elemental installation represents an envisioning of the ancient sea that occupied the Sierra de María-Los Vélez Natural Park millions of years before the current desert ecology, a time when its highest mountain peaks may have been islands.
