The Karakoram Anomaly? Glacier Expansion And The ‘Elevation Effect,’ Karakoram Himalaya, Kenneth Hewitt Nov 2005

The Karakoram Anomaly? Glacier Expansion And The ‘Elevation Effect,’ Karakoram Himalaya, Kenneth Hewitt

Geography and Environmental Studies Faculty Publications

In the late 1990s widespread evidence of glacier expansion was found in the central Karakoram, in contrast to a worldwide decline of mountain glaciers. The expansions were almost exclusively in glacier basins from the highest parts of the range and developed quickly after decades of decline. Exceptional numbers of glacier surges were also reported. Unfortunately, there has been no on-going measurement of climatic or glaciological variables at these elevations. The present article examines possible explanations for this seemingly anomalous behavior, using evidence from short-term monitoring programs, low-altitude weather stations, and the distinctive environmental characteristics of the region. The latter involve …

A Narrative Approach To The Evaluation Of Supportive Housing: Stories Of Homeless People Who Have Experienced Serious Mental Illness, Geoffrey Nelson, Juanne Nancarrow Clarke, Angela Febbraro, Maria Hatzipantelis Oct 2005

A Narrative Approach To The Evaluation Of Supportive Housing: Stories Of Homeless People Who Have Experienced Serious Mental Illness, Geoffrey Nelson, Juanne Nancarrow Clarke, Angela Febbraro, Maria Hatzipantelis

Psychology Faculty Publications

We present the findings of a narrative approach to the evaluation of supportive housing for formerly homeless people who have experienced serious mental illness. According to the accounts of 11 men and 9 women, their youth and adult years were piled with personal problems, troubled relationships, and a lack of adequate social resources. Since entering supportive housing, participants noted more stability in their lives and the beginning of journeys to recover positive personal identities, restore or develop new supportive relationships, and reclaim resources vital to leading lives with dignity and meaning. The findings add to the literature on housing interventions …

Our E-Journal Journey: Where To Next?, Greg Sennema

Library Publications

In early 2003, the Hekman Library of Calvin College and Calvin Theological Seminary decided to offer access to all of its e-journals, including titles within aggregators, using brief MARC records in its online catalog. This article describes the history of this decision, and how recent developments in e-journal management will affect it in the future.

Fiber Comb Filters Based On Uv-Writing Bragg Gratings In Graded-Index Multimode Fibers, Yi Liu, John W.Y. Lit, Xijia Gu, Li Wei Oct 2005

Fiber Comb Filters Based On Uv-Writing Bragg Gratings In Graded-Index Multimode Fibers, Yi Liu, John W.Y. Lit, Xijia Gu, Li Wei

Physics and Computer Science Faculty Publications

We report a new kind of comb filters based on fiber Bragg gratings in graded-index multimode fibers. It produces two groups of spectra with a total of 36 reflection peaks that correspond to 18 principal modes and cross coupled modes. The mode indices and wavelength spacings have been investigated theoretically and experimentally. This kind of comb filters may be used to construct multi-wavelength light sources for sensing, optical communications, and instrumentations.

The Relation Between Inhibitory Control And Children’S Eyewitness Memory, Kim P. Roberts, Martine B. Powell Sep 2005

The Relation Between Inhibitory Control And Children’S Eyewitness Memory, Kim P. Roberts, Martine B. Powell

Psychology Faculty Publications

The hypothesis that inhibitory control – an aspect of executive functioning – is related to children’s suggestibility was tested. Five- to 7-year-olds (N = 125) participated in a staged event, were suggestively interviewed, and were later given a recognition test. Conflict and interference measures of inhibitory control were taken and compared to children’s ability to identify details from the target event and reject details from non-target sources (i.e., false suggestions, details from prior events). Children with higher than average verbal retroactive inhibition skills were more resistant to suggestions than children with poor inhibitory control. Collectively, age and retroactive inhibition …

Providing For The Priceless Student: Ideologies Of Choice In An Emerging Educational Market, Scott Davies, Linda Quirke Aug 2005

Providing For The Priceless Student: Ideologies Of Choice In An Emerging Educational Market, Scott Davies, Linda Quirke

Sociology Faculty Publications

The growing popularity of school choice is typically linked to the spread of neoliberal ideology. Identifying four components of this ideology, we examine the rationales of providers in an emerging private school market. Data come from interviews and site visits at 45 “third-sector” private schools in Toronto, Canada. We find that only one of the four components has a strong resonance among these educators. Few private school operators sharply criticize public schools, compete via quantitative performance indicators, or are strongly business oriented. However, they voice a philosophy of matching their personal talents to the needs of “unique” children. Overall, rather …

A Study Of Three Community And School-Based Models Of Child Welfare Service Delivery In Ontario: An Exploration Of Parents’, Service Providers’, And Community Experiences, Karen Frensch, Gary Cameron, Lirondel Hazineh Aug 2005

A Study Of Three Community And School-Based Models Of Child Welfare Service Delivery In Ontario: An Exploration Of Parents’, Service Providers’, And Community Experiences, Karen Frensch, Gary Cameron, Lirondel Hazineh

Partnerships for Children and Families Project

This report highlights results from our study of three innovative child welfare programs in Ontario attempting to modify front line child protection practice. These programs endeavor to deliver child welfare services in ways that promote greater accessibility and acceptability of services for families, provide increased levels of assistance to families, afford a better understanding of daily living circumstances of children and families, and engage the community in protecting children. Study results confirm that the three programs were successful in accomplishing these goals. Parents’, service providers’, and community members’ perceptions of these programs showcase the positive helping relationships and community partnerships …

Long-Term Economic Hardship And Non-Mainstream Voting In Canada, Andrea M.L. Perrella Jun 2005

Long-Term Economic Hardship And Non-Mainstream Voting In Canada, Andrea M.L. Perrella

Political Science Faculty Publications

Canadian voting behaviour from 1979 to 2000 is examined by relating long-term economic changes to support for “non-mainstream” parties, defined as parties other than the Liberals or Progressive Conservatives. This long-term perspective is unique, in that standard economic voting research focuses mostly on how short-term economic changes affect support levels for the incumbent. In order to illustrate the effects of long-term economic decline, federal voting results are related with short- and long-term economic data, namely unemployment and labour-force participation rates, all aggregated at the provincial level. The pooled data produces results that confirm the relevance of short-term changes to explain …

The Holocaust As Fiction: Derrida’S Demeuere And The Demjanjuk Trial In Philip Roth’S Operation Shylock, Tamas Dobozy Apr 2005

The Holocaust As Fiction: Derrida’S Demeuere And The Demjanjuk Trial In Philip Roth’S Operation Shylock, Tamas Dobozy

English and Film Studies Faculty Publications

This essay investigates the representation of juridical testimony in Roth’s “confession,” Operation Shylock. Read through the theoretical lens of Jacques Derrida, specifically in terms of his Demeure, Roth’s novel suggests a new strategy for coping with the Holocaust in literature, wherein writing remains true both to the Holocaust as unspeakable and to the Holocaust as actual historical event.
