Sapere Aude: Critical Ontology And The Case Of Child Development, James Wong
Sapere Aude: Critical Ontology And The Case Of Child Development, James Wong
Communication Studies Faculty Publications
This paper argues that Foucault’s proposed positive program of practical critique in his later work, which he calls ‘critical ontology,’ provides a response to his critics. The goal of critical ontology is to “separate out, from the contingency that has made us what we are, the possibility of no longer being, doing or thinking what we are, do, or think.” However, it may be objected that, since Foucault emphasizes going beyond contingencies, it appears that he is guilty of committing a kind of genetic fallacy. I will defend Foucault against such a charge by using concepts and practices in child …

Understanding The Role Of Behavior And Cognitions In A Group Exercise Setting, Tina L. Shrigley, Kimberley A. Dawson
Understanding The Role Of Behavior And Cognitions In A Group Exercise Setting, Tina L. Shrigley, Kimberley A. Dawson
Kinesiology and Physical Education Faculty Publications
The first purpose of the present study examined whether individuals with different exercise behaviors (classified by attendance) experienced different or similar cognitive patterns. It was hypothesized that different behavior would lead to different cognitive appraisals. It was predicted that there would be a difference between the three behavioral frequency groups with regard to self-efficacy measures and goal measures. The second purpose of the study was to describe, evaluate and observe whether social factors were associated with participating in exercise in groups. It was hypothesized that those who engage in exercise classes would elicit a social focus. Participants for the study …

Evaluating The Influence Of Massage On Leg Strength, Swelling, And Pain Following A Half-Marathon, Lance G. Dawson, Kimberley A. Dawson, Peter M. Tiidus

Massage therapy is commonly used following endurance running races with the expectation that it will enhance post-run recovery of muscle function and reduce soreness. A limited number of studies have reported little or no influence of massage therapy on post-exercise muscle recovery. However, no studies have been conducted in a field setting to assess the potential for massage to influence muscle recovery following an actual endurance running race. To evaluate the potential for repeated massage therapy interventions to influence recovery of quadriceps and hamstring muscle soreness, recovery of quadriceps and hamstring muscle strength and reduction of upper leg muscle swelling …

Snowmelt Runoff From Northern Alpine Tundra Hillslopes: Major Processes And Methods Of Simulation, William L. Quinton, Sean K. Carey, Neil T. Goeller
Snowmelt Runoff From Northern Alpine Tundra Hillslopes: Major Processes And Methods Of Simulation, William L. Quinton, Sean K. Carey, Neil T. Goeller
Geography and Environmental Studies Faculty Publications
In northern alpine tundra, large slope gradients, late-lying snow drifts and shallow soils overlying impermeable substrates all contribute to large hillslope runoff volumes during the spring freshet. Understanding the processes and pathways of hillslope runoff in this environment is, therefore, critical to understanding the water cycle within northern alpine tundra ecosystems. This study: (a) presents the results of a field study on runoff from a sub-alpine tundra hillslope with a large snow drift during the spring melt period; (b) identifies the major runoff processes that must be represented in simulations of snowmelt runoff from sub-alpine tundra hillslopes; (c) describes how …

The Importance Of Care Irrespective Of Cure: The Daily Living Realities And The Service Experiences Of Families With Children With Complex Mental Health Problems, Nick Coady
Partnerships for Children and Families Project
This report summarizes the results of in-depth interviews conducted in the Summer of 2001 with parents from 12 families that had children who were or had been involved with an intensive, community-based service for children with complex mental health problems. This study had a dual focus: (a) to learn about the daily living realities of families with children who have complex mental health problems, and (b) to learn about families’ experiences with the mental health service. Qualitative analysis of the interviews yielded themes pertaining to each of these two areas of focus. The themes related to daily living realities paint …

Is Your Child’S Brain Potential Maximized? Mothering In An Age Of New Brain Research, Glenda Wall
Is Your Child’S Brain Potential Maximized? Mothering In An Age Of New Brain Research, Glenda Wall
Sociology Faculty Publications
Claims about the potential of early education and stimulation to enhance brain capacity have recently gained a prominent place in child rearing advice. This paper places the discourse that surrounds the new imperatives in its historical and sociological contexts and examines its implications for the experience and social expectations of mothers. In this light, the connections to the trend of increasingly child-centred and intensive parenting are explored as is the way in which these current claims fit within a neoliberal rationality where individual self-management, self-enhancement, and personal responsibility are seen as key.

Perception of speech is improved when presentation of the audio signal is accompanied by concordant visual speech gesture information. This enhancement is most prevalent when the audio signal is degraded. One potential means by which the brain affords perceptual enhancement is thought to be through the integration of concordant information from multiple sensory channels in a common site of convergence, multisensory integration (MSI) sites. Some studies have identified potential sites in the superior temporal gyrus/sulcus (STG/S) that are responsive to multisensory information from the auditory speech signal and visual speech movement. One limitation of these studies is that they do …
