Kung’S Theory Of Paradigm Shifts In Church History: An Evaluation, Florence Juma, J. M. Vorster
Kung’S Theory Of Paradigm Shifts In Church History: An Evaluation, Florence Juma, J. M. Vorster

The theory of paradigms is a broad subject that has been discussed extensively from various perspectives including science, religion and history. Its strengths and weaknesses have been aptly considered. This research article seeks to investigate the extent of the theory's applicability to church history. The question that we wish to address is: To what extent, is this theory of paradigms applicable in explaining the changes that have taken place through the history of Christianity?

Fluorescence Analysis For Multi-Site Aluminum Binding To Natural Organic Matter, D. Scott Smith, James R. Kramer
Fluorescence Analysis For Multi-Site Aluminum Binding To Natural Organic Matter, D. Scott Smith, James R. Kramer
Chemistry Faculty Publications
Natural organic matter (NOM) samples isolated from different water sources in Norway were compared using their fluorescence properties. Fluorescence surfaces were observed at pH 4.36 and deconvoluted using SIMPLISMA (Windig and Guilment 1991). There were a total of seven different fluorophores observed for these samples and each sampling site had between four and six ofthe fluorescent components. These components were observed to bind Al during titrations at the same pH. Multiresponse titration curves were fit using the method of Smith and Kramer (1998) and most of the binding strengths are similar to values for Suwannee River fulvic acid (1ogK’ between …
Multi-Site Proton Interactions With Natural Organic Matter, D. Scott Smith, James R. Kramer
Multi-Site Proton Interactions With Natural Organic Matter, D. Scott Smith, James R. Kramer
Chemistry Faculty Publications
Water samples from various locations in Norway were used to isolate natural organic matter (NOM). The NOM was isolated using both reverse osmosis and low-pressure low-temperature evaporation for each sample site. These samples were titrated from -log[H+] 3 to 11 at 0.1 unit intervals. The data were analyzed using the Discrete Site Analysis (DISI) technique for pKa intervals of 0.2. The acidity constants are grouped into four classes: strong (pKa < 5), intermediate strong (5.1< pKa < 7.5), intermediate weak (7.6 < pKa < 9.2), and weak (pKa > 9.3). All samples, regardless of isolation method, were found to contain strong and weak ligands, along with some intermediate ligands. For the same …

Many critics of the concept of human rights argue that it undermines indigenous cultures, especially in the underdeveloped world. I agree that the concept of human rights often undermines cultures. Culture rapture is often a necessary aspect of the entrenchment of respect for human rights. Culture is not of absolute ethical value; if certain aspects of particular cultures change because citizens prefer to focus on human rights, then that is a perfectly acceptable price to pay. Human rights are rights held by the individual, without regard to status or position, merely because she or he is human. In principle, all …

BACKGROUND: In Canada, primary care physicians manage most musculoskeletal problems. However, their training in this area is limited, and some aspects of management may be suboptimal. This study was conducted to examine primary care physicians' management of 3 common musculoskeletal problems, ascertain the determinants of management and compare management with that recommended by a current practice panel. METHODS: A stratified computer-generated random sample of 798 Ontario members of the College of Family Physicians of Canada received a self-administered questionnaire by mail. Respondents selected various items in the management of 3 hypothetical patients: a 77-year-old woman with a shoulder problem, a …

Mechanomorphosis: Science, Management, And “Human Machinery” In Industrial Canada, 1900–45, Cynthia Comacchio

By the early 20th century, the changes taking place in western industrial capitalist nations prompted an adaptive shift in the socioeconomic delineation of human bodies, and in scientific theories about how they worked and how they could be put to work. Just as the rising social sciences borrowed from medicine to convey images of social malaise, medicine increasingly appropriated an industrial vocabulary to conceptualize bodily health. Depicted variously as a machine, a motor, a factory in itself, the human body absorbed industrial symbolism. Modern industry demanded an intensification of labour that made bodily efficiency paramount. The corresponding definition of health …
