Using Network Science To Provide Insights Into The Structure Of Event Knowledge, Kevin S Brown, Kara E Hannah, Nickolas Christidis, Mikayla Hall-Bruce, Ryan A Stevenson, Jeffrey L Elman, Ken Mcrae

Psychology Publications

The structure of event knowledge plays a critical role in prediction, reconstruction of memory for personal events, construction of possible future events, action, language usage, and social interactions. Despite numerous theoretical proposals such as scripts, schemas, and stories, the highly variable and rich nature of events and event knowledge have been formidable barriers to characterizing the structure of event knowledge in memory. We used network science to provide insights into the temporal structure of common events. Based on participants' production and ordering of the activities that make up events, we established empirical profiles for 80 common events to characterize the …

Tulving characterized semantic memory as a vast repository of meaning that underlies language and many other cognitive processes. This perspective on lexical and conceptual knowledge galvanized a new era of research undertaken by numerous fields, each with their own idiosyncratic methods and terminology. For example, "concept" has different meanings in philosophy, linguistics, and psychology. As such, many fundamental constructs used to delineate semantic theories remain underspecified and/or opaque. Weak construct specificity is among the leading causes of the replication crisis now facing psychology and related fields. Term ambiguity hinders cross-disciplinary communication, falsifiability, and incremental theory-building. Numerous cognitive subdisciplines (e.g., vision, …

Support For Mid-Level Leaders To Build A Learning Organization In Complex Times, Shailau Spivak Mrs.

The Dissertation in Practice at Western University

More attention should be paid to an innovative mindset and a framework to support educators in complex educational landscapes. As leaders, we rarely take the time to focus our efforts on preparing schools for the inevitability of change. Agility College (AC) is a school that takes pride in its dedication to teaching and learning. We can rise even higher to support mid-level leaders (MLL) and be better prepared for our school’s future. An emerging problem of practice represented in my dissertation-in-practice which was highlighted during the pandemic was the need for a comprehensive change framework to support innovation and adaptability …

Prenatal Maternal Depression In Canada: Are Current Protocols Adequate?, Britney A. Glasgow-Osment, Farah Wahib, Madeleine Zanin, Shama Kassam

Master's in Interdisciplinary Medical Sciences Graduate Program

Throughout pregnancy, maternal and fetal health are influenced by a multitude of factors. Prenatal maternal depression is one such factor. It is well documented that prenatal maternal depression causes negative pregnancy outcomes for both the mother and baby, including irregular placental function, psychological distress, and pre-term birth, among others. In Ontario, the incidence of prenatal maternal depression is alarmingly high, at 10.3%.As such, the current tools for managing prenatal maternal depression must be effective, efficient, and comprehensive. We hypothesized that the current protocols for screening and treating prenatal maternal depression in Canada are inadequate. To investigate this, a literature review …

BACKGROUND: The association between chronic oral diseases and other major systemic health conditions, commonly referred to as the oral-systemic health connection, has been previously studied with several underlying common risk factors and pathways linking both groups of diseases. Psychosocial factors contribute to an increased susceptibility to chronic oral and non-oral diseases. The aim of this review is to summarize the current state of knowledge on the role of psychosocial stress in chronic oral and systemic diseases.

METHODS: A search strategy was built and a literature search was conducted using four databases (CINAHL, Embase, Medline, PsycINFO). A combination of search terms …

Perceiving Less But Wasting More: The Relationship Between Perceived Resource Scarcity And Consumer Food Waste, Bonnie Simpson, Rhiannon Macdonnell Mesler, Katherine White Jan 2024

Perceiving Less But Wasting More: The Relationship Between Perceived Resource Scarcity And Consumer Food Waste, Bonnie Simpson, Rhiannon Macdonnell Mesler, Katherine White

Management and Organizational Studies Publications

Consumers' food-related behaviors often culminate in significant food waste. Surprisingly however, limited attention has been given to psychological reasons why this occurs. Across four studies, this research suggests that, because perceived resource scarcity activates a resource acquisition goal, under conditions where product scarcity is not present it leads consumers to engage in inaccurate over-acquisition of resources (i.e., food), resulting in greater waste. Studies 1a (quasi-experimental field study) and 1b (lab experiment) test the role of perceived resource scarcity in predicting food acquisition and waste. Studies 2a and 2b are correlational and measure household food waste to demonstrate that resource acquisition …

MacDonald Franklin OSI Research Centre

Military personnel often face situations that challenge their moral beliefs, which, in some instances, leads to moral injury – profound psychological, social, and spiritual impairments caused by actions or events that violate deeply held moral values. The legal and ethical complexities of these events may cause individuals with moral injury to hesitate in seeking mental health treatment due to fears of confidentiality breaches and the potential legal and career repercussions for disclosing their traumatic experiences. In a hypothetical vignette-based experiment, we investigated the impact of potentially morally injurious events (PMIEs) on the likelihood of mental health treatment-seeking and trauma detail …

Occupational Therapy Publications

Occupational therapists have been supporting individuals who experience homelessness for several decades in their roles as community mental health therapists, on in-patient units, in traumatic brain injury programs, and in multiple other roles. Only recently, however, has this area of practice been acknowledged as distinct. Homelessness is growing in several high and middle-income countries worldwide. Occupational therapists have increasingly expressed an interest in gaining the knowledge and skills to effectively support individuals who experience homelessness, and in recent years, research in occupational therapy that focuses specifically on persons who experience homelessness has grown. The majority of individuals who have been …

The Dark Side Of Giving: Examining The Relationship Between The Dark Tetrad And Charitable Behavior, Bruno Bonfá-Araujo, Bonnie Simpspon, Julie Aitken Schermer

Management and Organizational Studies Publications

While the relationships between aversive personality traits and prosocial behavior still leave a lot up for debate, typically, people with a darker personality tend not to be associated with prosocial behavior. Interestingly, a few studies have found that behaving prosocially is not incompatible with the Dark Tetrad. In this study, we examine the relationships between the Dark Tetrad (subclinical narcissism and psychopathy, Machiavellianism, and everyday sadism) and charitable giving. Individuals (N = 529) completed measures of the Dark Tetrad, the Big Five, and individual charitable giving questions. Direct-entry regression revealed that everyday sadism positively predicted keeping more money …

Risk And Protective Factors For Stress Generation: A Meta-Analytic Review., Angela C Santee, Katerina Rnic, Katharine K Chang, Rachel X Chen, Jennifer-Ashley Hoffmeister, Hallie Liu, Joelle Lemoult, David J A Dozois, Lisa R Starr

Psychology Publications

The stress generation hypothesis suggests that some individuals contribute more than others to the occurrence of dependent (self-generated), but not independent (fateful), stressful life events. This phenomenon is commonly studied in relation to psychiatric disorders, but effects are also driven by underlying psychological processes that extend beyond the boundaries of DSM-defined entities. This meta-analytic review of modifiable risk and protective factors for stress generation synthesizes findings from 70 studies with 39,693 participants (483 total effect sizes) from over 30 years of research. Findings revealed a range of risk factors that prospectively predict dependent stress with small-to-moderate meta-analytic effects (rs = …

Primary care is an important part of the help-seeking pathway for young people experiencing early psychosis, but sex differences in clinical presentation in these settings are unexplored. We aimed to identify sex differences in clinical presentation to primary care services in the 1-year period prior to a first diagnosis of psychotic disorder. We identified first-onset cases of non-affective psychotic disorder over a 10-year period (2005-2015) using health administrative data linked with electronic medical records (EMRs) from primary care (n = 465). Detailed information on encounters in the year prior to first diagnosis was abstracted, including psychiatric symptoms, other relevant behaviours, …

MacDonald Franklin OSI Research Centre

INTRODUCTION: Identifying barriers to care in veteran populations is critical, as veterans face increased social isolation, relationship strains and financial insecurities. For Canadian veterans experiencing barriers to accessing healthcare, telehealth may be a promising alternative with comparable effectiveness to in-person services; however, the potential benefits and limitations of telehealth require further examination to determine its long-term utility, and to inform health policy and planning. The goal of the present research was to identify predictors and barriers to telehealth usage in Canadian veterans in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic.

METHODS: Data were drawn from baseline data of a longitudinal survey …

Psychology 3840g: Taking Out The Trash: Towards Responsible Waste Management Among London’S Post-Secondary Student Residents, Wendy Ellis, Noah Laskey, Sarina Lizotte, Bram Richmond

Community Engaged Learning Final Projects

The City of London’s off-campus student population exhausts much of the Waste Management Department’s time and resources with their irresponsible waste disposal habits. To better understand the factors affecting student waste mismanagement, a Qualtrics survey was administered on problematic streets populated largely by post-secondary students. This survey examined whether understanding one’s waste management expectations translated into responsible waste disposal. The survey also explored the impact of environmental, economic, and community concerns on waste management behaviours. Finally, students answered questions regarding perceived barriers to responsible waste management. Analyses revealed that students who understand waste management expectations are more likely to responsibly …

Natural disasters, including floods, earthquakes, and hurricanes, result in devastating consequences at the individual and community levels. To date, much of the research reflecting the consequences of natural disasters focuses heavily on victims, with little attention paid to the personnel responding to such disasters. We conducted a systematic review of the challenges faced by military, medical and public safety personnel supporting natural disaster relief operations. Specifically, we report on the current evidence reflecting challenges faced, as well as positive outcomes experienced by military, medical and public safety personnel following deployment to natural disasters. The review included 382 studies. A large …

Males Experiencing Sexual Assault At A Young Age: A Social Policy Evaluation In Canada, Hongshu Wang

2023 Undergraduate Awards

The paper aims to examine whether there should be policy intervention in Canada specifically helping males experiencing sexual assault because the current literature about the causes and consequences of male sexual assault victimization was limited in Canada, and sexual assault policies in Canada were mainly for female victims. The secondary study was conducted using the 2014 General Social Survey, Cycle 28: Victimization main file, a dataset created by Statistics Canada. Two binary logistics regressions are conducted to examine the relationship between the sex of the respondent and the relationship between sexual assault victims and attackers, and the male's disability status …

Anxiety And The Supernatural In The Awntyrs Off Arthur, Faith Caswell Jan 2023

Anxiety And The Supernatural In The Awntyrs Off Arthur, Faith Caswell

2023 Undergraduate Awards

The Awntyrs off Arthur is concerned with critical introspection, manifesting in numerous unconsciously and consciously addressed expressions of anxiety. Gawain, speaking to the ghost of Guinevere’s mother, wonders how he fights for other lords’ land in an attempt to ‘wynnen worshipp’, when doing so ‘withouten eny right’ (ll. 263-4). The use of ‘wynnen worshipp’ demonstrates the futility of the battle prowess intrinsic to chivalry; Gawain’s faith in the ability to win praise of arms has been shrouded by the means used to achieve it. While ‘right’ is used in this context as an entitlement to land, Gawain’s word choice relates …

Scorpions Spots And Green-Eyed Monsters - Madness In Macbeth And Othello, Faith Caswell

2023 Undergraduate Awards

Madness vehemently resists definition and is rather inscribed with meaning in each of its different cultural and historical contexts. Attempts to understand madness have been made by clerics, physicians, psychologists, and laypeople alike, but still the condition refuses to be explicitly determined. The ambiguity of madness plays an important role in Shakespearean tragedy, as his mad characters reveal their mental state in differing physiological and psychological expressions. Not only have critics and readers of these plays been invited to interpret the madness of Shakespeare’s characters, but agents within the play are also set as interpreters. Those who attempt to ‘read’ …

Rhythmically Modulating Neural Entrainment During Exposure To Regularities Influences Statistical Learning, Laura J. Batterink, Jerrica Mulgrew, Aaron Gibbings

Psychology Publications

The ability to discover regularities in the environment, such as syllable patterns in speech, is known as statistical learning. Previous studies have shown that statistical learning is accompanied by neural entrainment, in which neural activity temporally aligns with repeating patterns over time. However, it is unclear whether these rhythmic neural dynamics play a functional role in statistical learning, or whether they largely reflect the downstream consequences of learning, such as the enhanced perception of learned words in speech. To better understand this issue, we manipulated participants’ neural entrainment during statistical learning using continuous rhythmic visual stimulation. Participants were exposed to …
