Toward Building An Intelligent And Secure Network: An Internet Traffic Forecasting Perspective, Sajal Saha Aug 2023

Toward Building An Intelligent And Secure Network: An Internet Traffic Forecasting Perspective, Sajal Saha

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

Internet traffic forecast is a crucial component for the proactive management of self-organizing networks (SON) to ensure better Quality of Service (QoS) and Quality of Experience (QoE). Given the volatile and random nature of traffic data, this forecasting influences strategic development and investment decisions in the Internet Service Provider (ISP) industry. Modern machine learning algorithms have shown potential in dealing with complex Internet traffic prediction tasks, yet challenges persist. This thesis systematically explores these issues over five empirical studies conducted in the past three years, focusing on four key research questions: How do outlier data samples impact prediction accuracy for …

Virtual Sensor Middleware: Managing Iot Data For The Fog-Cloud Platform, Fadi Almahamid, Hanan Lutfiyya, Katarina Grolinger Oct 2022

Virtual Sensor Middleware: Managing Iot Data For The Fog-Cloud Platform, Fadi Almahamid, Hanan Lutfiyya, Katarina Grolinger

Electrical and Computer Engineering Publications

This paper introduces the Virtual Sensor Middleware (VSM), which facilitates distributed sensor data processing on multiple fog nodes. VSM uses a Virtual Sensor as the core component of the middleware. The virtual sensor concept is redesigned to support functionality beyond sensor/device virtualization, such as deploying a set of virtual sensors to represent an IoT application and distributed sensor data processing across multiple fog nodes. Furthermore, the virtual sensor deals with the heterogeneous nature of IoT devices and the various communication protocols using different adapters to communicate with the IoT devices and the underlying protocol. VSM uses the publish-subscribe design pattern …

Real-Time Edge-Enabled Video Surveillance, Catriona Chan Aug 2021

Real-Time Edge-Enabled Video Surveillance, Catriona Chan

Undergraduate Student Research Internships Conference

Edge computing is critical for intelligent and cost-effective Internet of Things (IoT) applications. In achieving edge-enabled video surveillance, three main limitations, i.e. storage, computational restrictions and high video analysis complexity, have to be overcome. In this project, image segmentation is implemented to reduce heavy resource requirements and improve accuracy on edge devices

Edge-Cloud Iot Data Analytics: Intelligence At The Edge With Deep Learning, Ananda Mohon M. Ghosh May 2020

Edge-Cloud Iot Data Analytics: Intelligence At The Edge With Deep Learning, Ananda Mohon M. Ghosh

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

Rapid growth in numbers of connected devices, including sensors, mobile, wearable, and other Internet of Things (IoT) devices, is creating an explosion of data that are moving across the network. To carry out machine learning (ML), IoT data are typically transferred to the cloud or another centralized system for storage and processing; however, this causes latencies and increases network traffic. Edge computing has the potential to remedy those issues by moving computation closer to the network edge and data sources. On the other hand, edge computing is limited in terms of computational power and thus is not well suited for …

Blockchain-Based Distributed Network Architecture For Internet Of Things, Min Li Nov 2019

Blockchain-Based Distributed Network Architecture For Internet Of Things, Min Li

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

IoT networks have already been widely deployed due to their convenience and low-cost advantage. However, due to the lack of strong self-protection mechanisms and the imperfect network architectures, many IoT devices are vulnerable to malicious cyber-attacks, which will further threaten the availability and security of IoT applications. Therefore, securing the network infrastructure while protecting data from malicious or unauthorized devices/users become a vital aspect of IoT network design. In the thesis, two types of IoT security mechanisms are mainly investigated, namely, IoT routing protection and smart community device authentication.

By adopting the distributed consensus mechanism, we propose a blockchain-based reputation …

Ml4iot: A Framework To Orchestrate Machine Learning Workflows On Internet Of Things Data, Jose Miguel Alves, Leonardo Honorio, Miriam A M Capretz Oct 2019

Ml4iot: A Framework To Orchestrate Machine Learning Workflows On Internet Of Things Data, Jose Miguel Alves, Leonardo Honorio, Miriam A M Capretz

Electrical and Computer Engineering Publications

Internet of Things (IoT) applications generate vast amounts of real-time data. Temporal analysis of these data series to discover behavioural patterns may lead to qualified knowledge affecting a broad range of industries. Hence, the use of machine learning (ML) algorithms over IoT data has the potential to improve safety, economy, and performance in critical processes. However, creating ML workflows at scale is a challenging task that depends upon both production and specialized skills. Such tasks require investigation, understanding, selection, and implementation of specific ML workflows, which often lead to bottlenecks, production issues, and code management complexity and even then may …

Orchestration Of Machine Learning Workflows On Internet Of Things Data, Jose Miguel Alves Apr 2019

Orchestration Of Machine Learning Workflows On Internet Of Things Data, Jose Miguel Alves

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

Applications empowered by machine learning (ML) and the Internet of Things (IoT) are changing the way people live and impacting a broad range of industries. However, creating and automating ML workflows at scale using real-world IoT data often leads to complex systems integration and production issues. Examples of challenges faced during the development of these ML applications include glue code, hidden dependencies, and data pipeline jungles. This research proposes the Machine Learning Framework for IoT data (ML4IoT), which is designed to orchestrate ML workflows to perform training and enable inference by ML models on IoT data. In the proposed framework, …

Deep Learning: Edge-Cloud Data Analytics For Iot, Katarina Grolinger, Ananda M. Ghosh Jan 2019

Deep Learning: Edge-Cloud Data Analytics For Iot, Katarina Grolinger, Ananda M. Ghosh

Electrical and Computer Engineering Publications

Sensors, wearables, mobile and other Internet of Thing (IoT) devices are becoming increasingly integrated in all aspects of our lives. They are capable of collecting massive quantities of data that are typically transmitted to the cloud for processing. However, this results in increased network traffic and latencies. Edge computing has a potential to remedy these challenges by moving computation physically closer to the network edge where data are generated. However, edge computing does not have sufficient resources for complex data analytics tasks. Consequently, this paper investigates merging cloud and edge computing for IoT data analytics and presents a deep learning-based …
