Pride On The Prairie: Resistance As Pedagogy In Oklahoma, Madelyn D. Evans, Ashley Herndon, Sage A. Mauldin
Journal of Queer and Trans Studies in Education
With an increasing number of attacks on two-spirit, transgender, queer, and gender non-conforming (2STQGNC) students, it is critical to critique the intersecting systems of oppression that work in tandem to eradicate anyone who does not conform to ‘regimes of normalcy,’ particularly cisheteronormativity. In Oklahoma, legislative assaults are taking place to erase 2STQGNC identities and limit civil rights and civil liberties within K-12 schools. This report examines various oppressive policies, highlights student-led resistance as a pedagogical tool, discusses the reciprocal relationship between student activism and community support, and concludes with recommendations for K-12 Educators and 2STQGNC Students.

Journal of Queer and Trans Studies in Education
This article reports on a study on educators supporting student activism for LGBTQ+ equity in schools. The research questions we address are: What impacts do activist-educators have on the activities of the students in their GSA (Genders & Sexualities Alliance)? In what ways do activist-educators support student activism for LGBTQ+ equity? Based on in-depth interviews with seven educators in Colorado, we use grounded theory to present a conceptual model called “Engines for Activism” (EFA). We share data that explain how student and educator interactions within the space of a student club led by an educator-activist can drive advocacy and activism …

Journal of Queer and Trans Studies in Education
In an era of increasing anti-LGBTQ+ legislation, queer youth continue to resist oppressive systems through knowledge-making and collective action. In this paper, we explore the transformative nature of liberatory knowledge making for sexual and gender diverse (SGD) youth, which can foster youth’s capacity for resistance work against systems that would otherwise harm them. The paper focuses on a program called Youth Research for Social Change (YRSC) program, where youth and adult co-conspirators engaged in participatory action research to challenge dominant narratives, develop critical consciousness, and foster a sense of community. We explore key tenets of liberatory knowledgemaking—community and solidarity, criticality, …

Research Development Review: The NORDP Journal
Research development (RD) is gaining recognition as an attractive career field, but navigating the variability of RD across universities can be difficult for prospective professionals. The growth of RD highlights the need to better characterize the distribution of RD duties and develop new paradigms for training RD professionals. We conducted a survey-based institutional case study of 123 research support staff at the University of Missouri (MU) from Nov. 3 to Dec. 15, 2023 to characterize the distribution of RD and research administration (RA) responsibilities across individual positions and units. Survey data showed a wide range of job titles associated with …
A Systematic Review Of Factors Supporting Early-Career Grant Success For Faculty In Stem And Medicine, Melanie Bauer
A Systematic Review Of Factors Supporting Early-Career Grant Success For Faculty In Stem And Medicine, Melanie Bauer
Research Development Review: The NORDP Journal
This literature review examines the factors and interventions that support early-career success in grant-seeking and research for faculty in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) as well as medical fields (collectively termed “STEMM”) at U.S. higher education institutions. Given the persistent and growing focus on securing external funding across colleges and universities, this investigation is valuable to both scholarly and practitioner audiences. Using a systematic and critical approach, this review summarizes the strengths and gaps of existing research. It highlights the limited focus of extant studies on grant seeking as distinct from publications when characterizing faculty productivity; calls for expanded …
Research Development Personas: Beyond The Case Of Many Hats, Melanie Bauer, Joshua Roney
Research Development Personas: Beyond The Case Of Many Hats, Melanie Bauer, Joshua Roney
Research Development Review: The NORDP Journal
Research Development (RD) professionals are often described as wearing “many hats”—a metaphor that reflects the diverse roles and responsibilities they assume to support faculty and institutional research goals. However, this framing does not fully capture the nuanced, relational, and strategic ways RD professionals engage with stakeholders. This article introduces the concept of RD personas to describe six approaches to support used by RD professionals: Consultant, Coach, Collaborator, Connector, Champion, and Creator. Drawing from the authors’ professional experience and recent NSF-funded projects, the article distinguishes these personas as holistic modes of engagement that shape how RD professionals provide support, build capacity, …
Coalition Building In Art Education: Holding Space, Redistributing Weight And Witnessing, Kathy J. Brown, Beth Link, Kendall Crabbe, Cheryl Boone
Coalition Building In Art Education: Holding Space, Redistributing Weight And Witnessing, Kathy J. Brown, Beth Link, Kendall Crabbe, Cheryl Boone
Journal of Social Theory in Art Education
Our coalition is made up of four art educators working across institutions of higher education. After encountering various racialized critical incidents, we began meeting virtually and in-person, to imagine new ways of navigating academic spaces. We are all cis women, two of us identify as Black, 2 as white, with varied ages and positions in academic institutions across the country. We gathered after the surge of Black Lives Matter protests and in the wake of a global pandemic. We gathered amid political backlash in the south as anti-CRT and DEI legislation dominated educational landscapes and abortion rights were curtailed. We …

Jurgen Comics Contest Comic Book And Artwork - 2026, Minuet Curry
Jurgen Banned Art Comics Contest
Digital cover art created by student editor Minuet Curry for the 2026 Jurgen Comics Contest comic book celebrating the contest winners. Winners' artwork was included in the print edition of this booklet. This cover art features Jurgen racing through time to thwart the influence of Sir Cen, the censor. Jurgen represents the contest's connection to James Branch Cabell's once-banned book Jurgen: A Comedy of Justice.
The 2026 Jurgen Comics Contest invited VCU students to create the cover artwork for an imagined comic book focused on an historical incident of art censorship.
