Value Shifts: Redefining “Leadership” A Narrative, Joseph Hester
Value Shifts: Redefining “Leadership” A Narrative, Joseph Hester
The Journal of Values-Based Leadership
This article provides a historical narrative documenting the major rifts and shifts in the concept of “value” in the 20th and 21st centuries. It is the author’s contention that these shifts have confused the conceptualization of value, making it a rather broad and meaningless term. Thus, to define “leadership” as “values- or ethically-based,” one must first provide a substantial defense of a particular moral view upon which leadership is want to be situated. This task is made arduous because “value” and “morals” have become confused in the morass of postmodernism and its political correlate, political correctness.

Missouri Synod congregations should seek to sponsor Haitian refugees and expand their ministry with handicapped parishoners.
Those were just two of literally dozens of recommendations and resolutions passed at the third biennial convocation of black Missouri Synod congregations. Delegates and visitors from more than half of the synod's 200 black congregations participated in the four-day meeting in mid-July in Chicago.

For the second year, the Wheat Ridge Foundation has granted $23,700 to the Lutheran Human Relations Association of America (LHRAA) to conduct two workshops for congregations in racially changing neighborhoods.
Last year's workshops involved seven midwest and seven west coast congregations. In the two week-long events - one in Chicago and one in Los Angeles - lay leaders and pastors developed skills to help their congregations minister more effectively in their changing communities (November 1977 and December 1977 VANGUARD).

As Lutheran meetings go, this was a strange one. Probably more non-Lutherans than Lutherans were present. And most of the non-Lutherans were Indians - Indians from California, Utah, New Mexico, Arizona, Colorado, Wisconsin, Nebraska, Minnesota, South Dakota, Oklahoma, North Carolina, Illinois and a few more states.

Into the middle of the "Denver debate" - the sometimes bitter, sometimes restrained, but always intense expressions of opinion - came a group of black Lutherans bringing their gift of love. Delegates, visitors, and members of the Black Youth Unlimited stood together on the platform in the convention hall.
The Reverend Albert Pero of Detroit, President of the Association of Black Lutheran Churchmen, Mr. Sherman Beverly, high school teacher and president of the Chicago Northwest Suburban chapter of LHRAA, and the Reverend Will Herzfeld of Oakland, California and former LHRAA board member, spoke for the group.

James Forman, director of the National Black Economic Development Conference, interrupted the service at Riverside Church, New York, on Sunday, May 3, when he stood in the chancel and read a list of demands made by his organization against the church. Riverside Church, located at Riverside Drive and 120th Street, just west of Harlem, has been singled out, Forman said, "because it is in the heart of the Harlem community, as are a few other racist institutions."

"
Dear Brother: This may surprise you, but after much thought and consultation with the local chapter of the Lutheran Mafia I have decided to run for the presidency of Synod. (The brother in the rear who is laughing will please leave the room.) You can readily understand that with so many brethren running sub rosa and in various disguises, there ought to be one honest candidate who announces that he is in the race. Theophilus had his doubts about the decision but consented to become my campaign manager when I promised him a synodical trip around the world to …
